Coaching staff is truly a family affair

T

he Rockdale coaching staff is proving literary history wrong, you actually can go home again. As I prepare for my ninth Rockdale football season, here’s a interesting fact that is unprecedented in Rockdale sports history: there are 10 members of Jeff Miller’s staff that are Rockdale High School graduates.   Miller’s recent hires of Kelsey Morgan Thurman and Jamie Daniels Austin pushed the number of Tiger products into double digits.   “It’s not something that we were looking for, it just kind of happened,” Miller said. “I think it’s kind of neat.   “I am always trying to hire the best people, the best teachers and the best coaches for these kids. These just happen to be from Rockdale.”   Throughout history, there has been a smattering of former RHS grads on the Big Blue coaching staff, but not of this magnitude.

In the history of Rockdale football, there has been just one head football coach that was also a RHS graduate— Graham Kyle. He lasted two years from 1947 to 1948.   The oldest current graduate on the staff is head basketball and cross country coach Liz Galloway McQuitter and

you won’t get much of an argument saying she’s the greatest female athlete in RHS history.   McQuitter—a member of the Rockdale Sports Hall of Honor—has played and coached at the highest levels and led the Lady Tigers back into the playoffs last season.   And there has been an influx of youngbloods to the staff. The recent “Meet the Tigers” cake auction, where all staff members are introduced, needed a nursery because there was so many newborns crawling around.   Thurman, Austin, Hunter Hamrick and new softball coach Lauren Robertson were all sporting new members of their families. New baseball coach Ronnie Jonse and his wife Kayla will soon join the club.   While not from Rockdale, the neighborhood is well represented. There are three staffers from Caldwell.   Trainer Dustin Cedidla, head basketball coach Sergio Garcia and junior high coach Miranda Loewe are former Hornets.   Of course Loewe could get a waiver, her mother Lisa is a Rockdale native and teacher and, of course, her father Dusty is the former Tiger basketball coach.   Miranda Loewe played for her father when he was the girls coach at Caldwell

and has followed his footsteps into the coaching profession.   Loewe, has come out of his one-year retirement and is now an assistant at Milano.   Again, there is a connection between Loewe and Milano. His father was a coach there in the 1950s and his mom is actually a graduate of Milano High.   Further adding to this family affair, Miller recently coaxed coaching great Slugger Hamrick out of retirement.   Of course, Miller had some help in the persuading department—Hamrick’s son Hunter is the Tigers’ offensive coordinator.

Tigers tanked up for long run Skilled runners, receivers take the pressure off new QB eff Miller believes this edtion of the Tigers can be as good as any team he has had in his eight years as coach here. In his annual “state of the union” interview with The Reporter, he addresses all things football in candid detail.   Rockdale Reporter—You have been here eight years now. Only one other coach has been here longer. You were 38 years old when you were hired. What has changed the most over the years?   Jeff Miller—“Well I think probably learning your style of coaching. Our philosophy of what we are trying to get out of these kids. I think we have established a pretty solid program from junior high on up. The game has changed a lot.   Obviously the new rules. The way the Miller game is played. And we’ve kind of gone with the flow when it comes to that.”   This year in particular, it seems like you have a lot of young guys, some new blood as coaches. What does that do to boost the enthusiasm of the program?   Truthfully, going back to 2007, we have as good a staff as we’ve ever had. Their main thing is that they relate to the kids so well and they enjoy being around them. They respect them, even when they are being disciplined, they still have a tremendous amount of respect for them. These guys are real energetic and show their passion on a daily basis. It doesn’t take much to show kids how passionate you are about what you are doing. It’s up to the coaches to win the kids over. I do my best to hire the best quality coaches, sometimes that’s difficult. This year, we were extremely lucky and people wanted to be a part of the success we are having.   Once these guys took the job, they either moved here or drove from where they were living to get here. When you

J

James David do something like that, you are showing the kids how committed you are to their success. Any apprehension the kids might have was eliminated almost immediately.   A glance at your schedule, shows you’re facing two state champions: Cameron (Sept. 14) and Navasota

(Oct. 26) and both are at home. Got to be a first for you?   First of all, one thing that... our record over the past six or seven years is not indicative on how well we have played. Purposely we schedule a very difficult continued on next page

have with Elijah and Dailynn, you have to utilize that. When he was able to play full speed, Dailynn did very well.   In my opinion, Elijah had as good a year as anybody in our district. He was consistent and steady, a great receiver out of the backfield, not to mention he was doubling up at noseguard for us. Just an unselfish player. We anticipate both of them getting quite a few carries and there are times when they will both be back there. They both have things that they are good at and they are both important to us on defense as well. We know we have two very good ones and they are each other’s biggest fans.   You’re losing a pretty good receiver in Clayton, but you’ve got two good ones coming back in Austin Caffey and Pearce Loth?   We have six receivers that we have a ton of confidence in and are very valuable to us in what we do offensively. I’m already seeing the maturity in Pearce. He’s dedicated a lot of time in the weight room. He’s starting to get real passionate about football and really starting to understand his potential. He is so much more confident now than he was last year. Sometimes it takes time to start believing that you belong.

The

non-district schedule. I’m not nearly as concerned with my overall record as I am getting us ready to face district competition.   At one point during the season, you had 13 players on the sidelines injured. You had guys that had started on the junior varsity one week and then the varsity the next.   We also had a receiver starting at center. Last year was really a fluke year as far as injuries. I was really proud of the kids that stepped up. One thing is we have a certain amount of starters coming back, but we have a ton of kids coming back because they were forced into action that they probably weren’t ready for.   The past couple of years we have talked about the luxury of having a returning quarterback in Ethan Brinkley. This year we get back to normal with a new quarterback in Clayton Gibbs. It’s a smart coach who adjusts his system to the players he has rather than the other way around. Obviously Ethan was very good at what he did as a drop back, in-the-pocket passer. With Clayton, he’s a little different player, you’re going to be able to do some zone read?   First off, I can’t say enough about

Ethan Brinkley and what he brought to Rockdale athletics over the last three years. He could spin it as well as anybody. He was so good at what he did, we were able to be successful throwing the ball. He was a gamer, he was a leader in games and at practice. The kid also earned post-season honors in two sports. Above that, he was a great person, a great young man all the way around. Those type of kids, it’s makes you real sad at graduation. Clayton has some of those same qualities as Ethan. He’s a leader and very intelligent, great overall athlete. His main concern is the team’s success over personal success.   That part makes him very coachable. Of course, he doesn’t have much experience at quarterback, but he’s a senior and we expect him to come in and learn all the things he needs to and he has. We have nothing but confidence in him that he will have a great year for us.   Dailynn Ramey basically missed most of the year with an injury while Elijah Brooks kind of quietly had 1,000 yards last year. With what Brooks did last year and Ramey coming back full speed, you’ve got to feel good about your running game.   There will be a little bit more emphasis on the running game, that’s our plan. When you have the quality of backs we

Darius Ford is dedicated and as good as any receiver we have and Derek Whitsel is such a smart kid, he knows about three different positions for us. He’s just a player. Devonte Burgess has the moves and the shakes and he’s got a little speed and we try to move him out in space and let him try to get loose. Austin is a linebacker playing receiver. He has that nasty linebacker mentality to go with great hands. He loves the contact and is tough as nails. The transfer from Belton, Brent Drummond, is really starting to pick up our offense now and is really going to help us.   What about the tight end situation with more running in the game plan?   You’re going to see a lot more tight end this year than you have in the past. Our starter, Pete Heintze is a pretty solid receiver, pretty good blocker. Behind him are two very capable guys in Preston Ehler and (Milano transfer) Tyler Prazak.   How important is it to keep the offensive line healthy this year?   We feel like one of our strong suits this year is the line. They were very consistent whenever they played together last year. We’re not extremely deep, but if we can keep those first five or six guys

healthy, we’re pretty solid up there. We have a lot of confidence in that group.   We talked about losing a threeyear quarterback, you also lost a three-year kicker in Noe Zelaya, who was pretty consistent for you.   Noe just did his job for us. He would just go out there and—boom—kick extra points and then put the ball right where you wanted it on the kickoff. I think we have another good one in Adolfo (Chavira, transfer from Mexico). He has a lot of potential. He kicked a lot of field goals for the junior varsity last year. He just needs the experience of playing on Friday.   You’re using the same defensive set as you have in the past, the 4-3, but you have a new defensive coordinator in Mike Dunn. Anything different about how he’s executing it this year?   The concept is completely different than what we have done in the past. It’s a scheme that’s going to fit our kids a whole lot better.   Is (Baylor pledge) James David 100 percent yet after his knee injury last year?   He’s not officially cleared for game situations yet. He goes back to the doctor next week and hopefully he’ll be cleared continued on next page

there, he looks pretty good. He has lost a little bit of his speed just because he missed the summer workout. But all-in-all he looks good.   What do you feel like your team’s strength is right now?   Defensively it’s our secondary. On the other side, our line needs to stay healthy. The caliber of running backs we have are solid. And I’m excited about the core group of receivers.   What’s a weakness?   Quality depth. We have a lot of players in our depth that are ready to go right now and play a whole ball game. I don’t know if its a weakness, but it’s an unknown, as is our kicking game. They’re both (Chavira as kicker, Gibbs as punter) capable, but still unknown.   What are your expectations of this year’s team?   Potentially, we have a chance to be as good as we have been since 2008, which is the best team we’ve had. We still have to have some kids step up and play as good as they are capable of playing. If you include all the intangibles and staying healthy and getting some breaks here and there, I’d say my expectations would be to win a lot of football games and I know that’s kind of generic, but I think we are capable of being extremely successful. When you play the schedule we play, I don’t think you can totally measure success strictly by the outcome of the game. The kids are work-

hat do you do when you finally win a state title, well Cameron head coach Rick Rhoades and his Yoemen are planning on winning another one.   Cameron defeated Dangerfield 38-20 last season in the Class 2A Division I state title game held at Cowboys Stadium in Arlington. It was the second football state championship in school history, the other coming in 1981.   It was the first state title for Coach Rhoades, having been there three other times in his career (two with the Yoe).   The team is again strong, disciplined and should make a deep run in Rhoades the post-season.   It was the second time that the Yoemen and Dangerfield met in the title game. In 2010, Dangerfield won on a long pass with less than 30 seconds left. In 2012, Cameron left no doubt they were the best team, going 15-0 all the way to the state title.   Dangerfield, who finished the season at 12-4, was denied its fourth state championship in the last five years and seventh overall.   Cameron is returning 24 off last year’s roster, 18 of them lettermen, and six starters on either side of the ball.   Just nine players off this year’s roster didn’t play on the varsity at any time during the season last year.   “The good thing about that long season is it gave

Jason Kopriva

us six extra weeks of practice,” Rhoades said of the 2012 title run. “Our goal always, every year, is to win a state title.”   The Yoemen are picked No. 2 in preseason statewide polls behind Newton.   The Yoemen are led on the defensive side of the ball by senior linebacker Somari Wright (6-1, 199), who was named the Class 2A Defensive Player of the Year by Dave Campbell’s Texas Football magazine (TF). He was also the state title game defensive MVP where he wrapped up 16 tackles and snagged an interception.   “I don’t let all that (awards) affect me,” Wright said of the preseason honors. “I just play the game I know.”   “Somari is a great player. He has great physical tools,” Rhoades said. “He will make sure our defense is ready. He is very gifted.”   TF described Wright as “one of the state’s finest defenders at any level.”   Wright had 245 tackles and four sacks last season.   He has several college prospects looking at him right now, according to Rhoades.   “I want to be a teacher to those (underclassmen), be a leader and know that if they mess up I need to pick them up,” Wright said. “I need to be their mentor like Edgar (Luna) was to me.” He is also tabbed as the district’s preseason defensive MVP.   Wright will get help from fellow senior Kylen Harrell who switched from offensive guard to nose guard this season, replacing all-state Luna.   “I saw last year that it took a lot of leadership, hard work on and off the field and determination,” Harrell said.   The seniors expect those reserve players to play as hard as the starters do.   “We go all out every play and when that second string comes in we tell them they have to do the same,” Wright added.   Quarterback Jason Kopriva will start his third season as Cameron’s signal caller and big things are expected from him.   “Jason has been in our offense for three years and he understands what we are trying to do,” Rhoades, in his fifth year at Cameron, said. “We are giving him more responsibility out there this season.”   His is the district’s top returning passer with 3,216 yards and 39 touchdowns.   During the state title game, the lefty was 19 of 29 for 171 yards and two continued on page 14

scores.   “We were very blessed to be able to have that opportunity,” Kopriva said. in playing in the state title game. “Not many people get to do that.”   And he believes this year’s team has the same chance.   “With the right group of guys it is always a possibility.”   He feels the team is well-balanced and that he has confidence in those teammates that may not have as much Friday night playing experience as others.   Since things worked really well last season, Kopriva said they really aren’t changing things up too much, even with the new personnel.   “I am looking forward to the last ride with these guys and the memories,” Kopriva said. “This season will be the icing on the cake for us.”   Kopriva, picked as the preseason league offensive MVP and is a preseason all-state punter by TF.   Other key players Rhoades listed are OL/LB Jonathan McAnulty (started 15 games), WR/DB Colton Shuffield (led the team in receptions in 2012 with 933 yards and 15 touchdown receptions), WR/DB Justin Pratt, DB Adam Charanza (was hurt last year in week eight

game), WR/DB Colton Labay, WR/DB Aaron Sims and OL A.J. Harwell (moving in as the team’s new center).   The Yoemen do have some big shoes to fill with those who graduated off the 2012 state champion team.   “We have some question marks, our biggest being our offensive line,” Rhoades said. “We are still looking for five guys that can play well together and get the job done.”   He said another question mark is the defensive front where Harrell will replace Luna and have big shoes to fill. Luna was the district MVP and all-state defensive linemen. He was also the Padilla Poll’s defensive player of the year for 2012. Luna started all four years of high school for the Yoemen and is currently on the roster at Blinn College, along with former Cameron standouts Dede Westbrook and Deantana Holt.   ”Edgar was a big loss to us not only on the field, but he was a big leader for us too,” Rhoades said. “That entire senior class were great leaders for us...Dylan and Zach Riola, Keaton Denio, all those guys.”   “I think Kylen will be very good there (at nose guard),” Rhoades said. “But we need to get that Friday night game experience.”   Graduated all-state running back Kea-

ton Denio will also be a huge hole to replace on the roster.   Senior Jalen White was sought to be Denio’s replacement at running back, but he was injured during a car accident last spring and has yet to practice.   “We hope to get him back as early as next week,” Rhoades said. “Right now sophomore Traion Smith is in that position.”   Denio was the offensive MVP in the state title game.   TF has tagged Cameron’s District 13-2A DI as toughest district in the state.   “No district in Division I combines both quality at the top and competitive depth as well as District 13. With state champion Cameron Yoe, perennial power Lago Vista, rising star McGregor and even dark horse Marlin, this group goes four or five deep. One thing’s for sure: these teams will be battle-tested,” the magazine listed.   The Yoemen are picked to

win the district title in front of Lago Vista, McGregor and Marlin. Troy is tagged to finish just out of the post-season in front of Salado, Academy and Florence.   “Our district is very competitive,” Rhoades said. “Anybody can beat anybody on any given week.”   According to Rhoades, McGregor is returning several players from last yar, including four-year starting quarterback Troy Allison; Lago Vista runs the slot T, which you don’t see often in 2A ball and Coach Alan Haire always does a great job; Marlin is good and a talented team that had to stay at home last season; Salado is athletic and has 480 students at its high school.   With four teams in the post-season this year Rhoades said it is a good thing for the district. He feels like any team in the district could go two

rounds in the playoffs.   “You have to be ready to play every week.”   Cameron has gone undefeated in district play the last three seasons.   The Yoemen will open up the season against Waco Connelly on Aug. 30, a team they beat by just one point last year.   “Connelly has good athletes and are like what we will see in the playoffs,” Rhoades said.   They will then host Lexington, travel to Rockdale for the annual Battle of the Bell and then have an open date before starting district play.   “To be good you got to play good people,” Rhoades said. “We are going to have to play really good football to get through our non-district schedule undefeated,” Rhoades said.   Cameron played against China Spring and Madisonville during pre-season scrimmages.

Milano: Help wanted sign out Loss of Messer, Sanders leaves Eagles in rebuilding mode

ilano Eagle head coach Craig Jentsch will have to fill holes in key positions this season. That is just one of the many tasks facing the fifth year head coach and his 2013 team.   This group does have 11 seniors on its roster, but are now without graduated all-state linebacker and receiver Dominique Messer and two year signal caller Toby Sanders.   “We are senior heavy,” Coach Jentsch said. “But we don’t have another Dominique or Toby on the sidelines.” Messer has signed to play receiver at West Texas A&M University.   The Eagles return 15 starters off last year’s squad, seven on offense and eight on defense.   Coach Jentsch said he feels strengths on the team are the numbers. Forty-three boys came out for football in Milano this season and the coach said he has a good amount of linemen on the Jentsch roster.   “We have eight or 10 and have a lot of confidence in what they will be able to do,” he said.   “Another big strength is experience as a whole with the numbers coming back, even though they will be at different positions than they played last season, they did play on Friday night,” Coach Jentsch added. “We had nearly perfect attendance at two-a-days practice and they have picked up well with the new stuff we have stuck in. We feel more comfortable as a staff with our back ups.”   Milano was 6-4 last year and a disappointing 2-3 in league play, missing out on the post-season. The Eagles had made three straight trips to the post-season, but losing three district games last season (by a total of nine points) kept them from reaching the

since my teammates, my coaches and our fans will count on me this year as the quarterback,” the senior said. “I have confidence in my teammates and I believe they have my back. We are brothers, a team.”   Millar was the top ball carrier for Milano in 2012, with 721 yards and nine touchdowns. He was tagged as a first team running back last year and as a sophomore was district co-newcomer of the year.   Senior Chance Pack (5-9, 210) will be the primary running back this season, a spot Millar held last year.   The Eagles’ offense will be based out of the spread, utilizing a tight end option. Senior David Jentsch (who was on the offensive line last season) will see time there.   Junior Randy Pedroza will return at center for the Eagles. Others seeing time on the offensive line will be senior Kody Love, juniors Tyler Blake, Jonathon Reyes, Cutter Barnett and Trent Ellison.   Love and Pedroza were all-district honorable mention linemen last season.   Milano’s receiving corps will include seniors Justin Grimes, Mik Mader and Nick Bonorden along with junior Treyton Steinbecker.

Grimes was an honorable mention receiver and Mader a second team pick on the all-district squad.   “We won’t have that deep threat like we had with Dominique, but we should still have the ability to move the chains,” Coach Jentsch said.   Special teams was a big factor for the Eagles last year, as they did miss out on the post-season by a matter of nine points. One of the district game losses was by one point and another by two points. In both those games Milano kickers missed more than one extra point attempt.   Mader will handle extra point duties this year, with Jentsch doing punts and kickoffs.   Bonorden and Steinbecker will handling kickoff and punt return duties.   DEFENSE—On defense, Milano’s front will be anchored by seniors Chris Rowan, Love and Ellison. Rowan was a first team all-district selection in 2012 and Ellison earned an honorable mention.   Ellison has been on varsity since he was a freshman, but suffered a broken leg in the middle of district play last season.   Big things are also expected from

The Eagles secondary will include Grimes, Bonorden and Steinbecker.   Millar was an all-district first team defensive back last year and Grimes an honorable mention in that position.   Gallarado was an honorable mention running back in 2012.   With Messer gone, Millar returns as the team’s leading tackler, making 71 stops last season.

SCRIMMAGES—Coaches were not pleased with how the team performed during the Aug. 16 scrimmage at Bremond, but said that the Aug. 22 practice session against Anderson-Shiro showed some improvement.   “We saw a lot of things that were better,” Coach Jentsch said. “But we still have a long ways to go.”   He said the Eagles defense did a better job against the run in the Shiro scrimmage versus the Bremond scrimmage. But noted that there were still some breakdowns in pass coverage.   “We think we can fix that with practice,” Coach Jentsch said.

On offense he said they moved the ball well.   “Our offensive line still has a long way to go,” he said. “Our receivers blocked better and overall we did improve.”   He added the team’s reaction time has to get quicker, but that will happen with repetition.   “We have a lot of work to do before we can be competitive in our district,” Coach Jentsch said.   DISTRICT—The Eagles are picked to finish fourth in District 13A Division II by Dave Campbell’s Texas Football magazine.   Burton, ranked No. 8 in statewide preseason polls and regional finalist last season, is tagged to win the league title, followed by Bartlett and Granger.   The district will again be tough. Bartlett returns 14 seniors and “will be better than people give them credit for,” Coach Jentsch said.   Granger looks to be strong and a tough opponent for the Eagles as Coach Jentsch tagged them as “the most physical team in the district.”   Of course, Burton will be hard to beat as they are picked in the state’s top 10 preseason Class A Division II polls, as they return a lot of speed to a talented group of guys.   Somerville had 30 kids out for foot-

ball and “will be better,” according to Coach Jentsch.   Milano is picked ahead of Snook and Somerville.   “The district one through six will be better as a whole this year,” Coach Jentsch said. “Any of these teams get a key injury it is a big deal in Class A ball.”   NEW COACHES—Milano has added two new faces to its coaching staff, but they are familiar faces around Milam County.   Jacob Dent will help on the offensive side of the ball. Dent is a MHS graduate and was the athletic director in Gause last year. He has also served in coaching stints in Austin and Normangee.   Former Rockdale basketball coach Dusty Loewe is getting back into the gridiron game as he comes on board in Milano. He will be the team’s eye in the sky during games.   Dent and Loewe join John Hughes and Chad LaGrone who will focus on the team’s defense.   The Eagles will open up their 2013 campaign on the road Thursday, Aug. 29 at Del Valle JV. Dawgs possess skills that thrill But, questions in the line may determine their success rent Brevard has been blessed with a roster full of talented skill position players, but heading into the 2013 season, he’s more concerned with what’s going on in the trenches.   Graduation, low numbers and injuries have hampered the progress of the Bulldogs’ interior line.   Brevard, beginning his third season in Thorndale, understands that no matter how much flash you have on the outside, if you don’t take care of business on the inside, it can turn into a flash in the pan.   “Offensive and defensive lines are a concern, he said. “We don’t have a lot of lineman-type kids. We’re just young on the offensive line. Four months ago we had a little better idea of who it would be. We’ve progressed, but we still have some work to do.   “The skill kids we have won’t matter a lot if we don’t come togethBrevard er on the offensive line.”   Brevard is carrying just 23 players on the 2013 roster, which features just nine seniors.   First off, Thorndale lost defensive MVP Fabien Gomez, Heath Vasquez and Chris Laurence (both first-team all-district) and Daniel Avila to graduation.   Next, their biggest lineman Devin Fisher (6-foot-2, 220 pounds) had knee surgery in February and Brevard hopes to have him back “by the fifth or sixth game.”   Senior Bailey O’Campo (5-8, 165) has had some knee issues and will need a brace to lace up on Friday nights.   Another potential lineman, junior Devin Patin, is still recovering from being hit in the head with a line drive in baseball four months ago and has been advised to sit out football this season.   “He’s on the roster and he’s been doing what he can to help out,” Brevard said “But, he doesn’t need to get hit in the

“But, he doesn’t need to get hit in the head at this point.”   All is not lost however, as veterans Lorenzo Llana and Sterling Kothmann will anchor the cobbled line.   Llana (6-2, 185) was first team all-district on both sides of the ball as a lineman and linebacker. The athletic senior (90 tackles) is the District 13A pre-season defensive player of the year.   “He is so talented and versatile,” Brevard said. “We are lucky to have him and his leadership.”   Kothmann (6-2, 220) was also an all-district selection on both sides last season and will be counted on heavily amongst the youngsters.   Other lineman candidates include Cody Niemtschk, Ethan Biar, Kole McCoy, Dalton Robertson and a pair of super-sized sophomores, Matthew Deary (5-9, 240) and Harrison Kothmann (5-11, 260).   So hungry for numbers, freshman Ruben Briones (5-7, 180) has earned a spot on the varsity roster as well.   Now, on the sunny side of the street, there’s offensive stars galore, beginning with senior quarterback Riley Schaefer.   The 5-foot-11, 170-pound Schaefer broke every passing mark in the Bulldog record book last season and should be able to

expound on those in 2013.   Schaefer threw for 2,070 yards and 26 touchdowns against just eight interceptions. (That’s okay, he made up for it by picking off nine passes on defense.)   For any coach at any level, having a returning starter under center is a blessing— and an anomoly.   “In my eight years of calling plays, this is only the second time I have had a returning quarterback,” Brevard said. “Normally, it’s just always been a senior.   “The experience he brings is immeasureable. He knows things, he sees things. He picks up things quicker than someone who hasn’t had any reps. He understands everything.”   Schaefer—who was the offensive MVP in district and the pre-season favorite to repeat—had a trio of reliable receivers last season in speedster Keon Mays, Sam Stockton and Colton Austin.   Only Austin (5-10, 175) returns, who had a hasty coming out party last year after joining the varsity after the fifth game and ended up leading the team is receiving yards with 618 yards alongside 31 catches and seven touchdowns.   Austin was also third on the team in rushing with 292 yards and five more scores. He is also expected to be the placekicker for the Bulldogs after taking over the duties last continued on next page

certainly don’t want to be one-dimensional.   “The opportunity is there to score a lot again, but we still have to get sound up front.”   After returning to their rightful place at the playoff party, winning 10 games for the first time since 2006 and pushing defending champion Mason to the brink, expectations are once again high in title town.   But what else is new?   “I tell them, we can only control what we can control,” Brevard said. “Our expectations should be high because we are Thorndale and in Thorndale, expectations are high.”

season.   Schaefer, who connected with a dozen different receivers in 2013, will also enjoy the return of senior speedster Eric Guzman, who missed most of last year due to a knee injury.   Guzman (5-7, 165) is also a return specialist, averaging 27 yards a touch.   Junior Jordan Hafley (5-7, 140) showed flashes for the big play last season as a sophomore and will play an important role at both receiver and defensive back.   Rockdale transfer Dillon Bankston (5-8, 145) and Troy Gomez (5-11, 165) and backup quarterback Jake Miller will see the field as well.   The senior Gomez was a first-team all-district defensive back.   Another sophomore who made an impact last season, Rowdy McCoy (5-9, 185) will figure in importantly on offense and defense.   “We can rotate about seven kids in at

receiver so that will help in our depth because a lot of people are going to be playing both ways,” said Brevard.   Making Schaefer’s job even easier was the surpsrising play of another sophomore, running back Darius Brooks.   Brooks (5-10, 180) became the first Bulldog to rush for 1,000 yards since Marcus Gest in 2007 with a ground total of 1,090 and he also crossed the goal line 15 times.   “He should do what we expect and what we hope for,” Brevard said. “He will be playing more defense than he did last year. He’s our best defensive lineman right now.”   Thorndale took to Brevard’s wideopen offense like a dog to a bone, averaging 37 points a game and eclipsing 50 points four times.   No scoreboard will be safe again.   “We feel like we can be balanced again, we should be able to throw it and that will open up the running game,” Brevard said. “We
