This project analyzes the Azuma House, designed by Japanese architect Tadao Ando, in order to identify the main principles he used to guide the design. Building a row house, Ando had to navigate the challenges of a narrow site without a lot of access to light. He contrasted a simple, closed-off exterior with an open interior courtyard that allows him to bring light and other natural elements into the house. Ando creates hierarchy through controlling the penetration of light, with the courtyard allowing the most unobstructed light in. AXONOMETRIC
