“TWO WORLDS”

I’m Kristina, a human being emerging from the collision of two worlds: interior design and classical music. Though these worlds seem unlike one another, they share a common ground: discipline, strict attention to detail, and an appreciation for storytelling. As a designer, I pull from my colorful and unique experiences to serve human beings in delightful and useful ways. My most powerful design tools are my intuition and endless curiosity for all things tangible, spatial, and temporal. I believe that interior design extends past the interior volume and into our memories, perceptions, biases, emotions, beliefs, behaviors, etc. Tw o o f m y p r o j e c t s t h u s f a r a i m t o r e a c h beyond the designs themselves; one recenters a disconnected neighborhood through an architectural meander, and another offers a respite for battered women by means of a sweeping, swirling gesture contained within a re c t a n g u l a r p r i s m . Wi t h t h e s e s m a l l e r ideas come larger, hopefully more impactful goals that can, bit by bit, improve the human experience.

ANDFOUR is located in Leimert Park Village in Leimert Park, a neighborhood in South Los Angeles characterized by a racially and economically diverse population, charming single-family and multi-family homes, and a rich Black American history imbued with jazz. Leimert Park Village is the hub of the neighborhood, providing coffee, Pan-African wares, and culture to the community, which is architecturally anchored by the historic, Art Deco Vision Theater. 3

THREADING A MEDLEY Taking cues from the neon lights of the Vision Theater and the bright African textiles sold on Degnan, the Music Staff Meander is the architectural element that unifies the four aesthetically dissimilar commercial spaces. This Meander provides a fun, playful walking path for the community which transforms into slides, seating, tables, and a building facade at various points of its journey, emphasizing the multi-functional aspect of ANDFOUR’s overall design. However, the Meander is more than an interesting design component; it represents the interconnectedness that Leimert Park craves. The Music Staff Meander weaves through PERFORM’s stage.

G A T H E R

Like the monarch butterflies roosting in the oyamel forests, people need each other to thrive. In their process of getting back on their feet, women and their children need a place to not only find safety but also to foster friendships. OYA takes design cues from these forests by encouraging close interactions which can be experienced in the clustered aquaponics stations, the communal cafe seating, and the intimate Butterfly House.

T A K I N G

F L I G H T

Women’s lives at OYA are complicated as they juggle finding their footing, raising their children, and preparing for their new path. The swirling burst of the monarch butterflies emerging from their winter roost as they fly onward is a metaphor for this transition. At OYA, this swirl informs the circulation of the space, allowing women to learn new skills while their children can safely play and read under one roof.

C O N N E C T I O N

T O

N A T U R E

In the middle of Hollywood, there are few opportunities to connect with the outdoors. At OYA, there is a reconnection with nature: one can relax in the patio space resplendant in native flowers, or observe monarchs in the butterfly house. Natural light dapples the interior space of OYA, enhancing the mood and wellbeing of its inhabitants.

9 17. 2 0 9 . 070 3 | K JAC I N T H @ G M A I L . C O M | K R I S T I N AC H O E JAC I N T H . C O M

OYA uplifts and empowers women and children who have endured homelessness, poverty, and domestic violence. By connecting with members of their community, women have a better fresh start. They can lead positive lives, become confident role models, and guide their children into hopeful futures.

Glacier formations and caves contain irregularly-shaped channels and tunnels through which one can travel. These paths can feel unnerving to the unfamilar traveller, especially when there is no clear direction. One can become overwhelmed by the blinding whiteness of a glacier or by the pitch blackness of a deep cave when there is no guide.

Meryl McMaster’s work is largely tied to the earth which is a metaphor for her Indigenous heritage and time itself. She is searching to answer questions which are difficult: Who is she in between her Indigenous and Western identities? And, how do we grapple with the passage of time when we are somewhere in between the past and the future?

(above) The corridor to LUCE, a private club for synaesthetes, softens the eyes and prepares the visitor’s senses. Works by Alex Gardner and Kara Walker adorn the walls which are covered in achromatic, Baroque-esque botanical wallcoverings.

32

(right) LUCE takes cues from the musical salons of the 18th Century, as seen in this painting. Musicians, intellectuals, and socialites would gather in these intimate spaces whose central feature was often a pianoforte.
