Editor’s Note

It’s been years since the ongoing pandemic struck us. Like most around the world, we were left undirected and afloat for a while. The covid-19 pandemic has hit us hard in New York City, we experienced the loss of family members, friends, jobs, or facing financial hardship. In addition, the novel coronavirus is fueling anti-Asian racism, xenophobia, and violence. Kiwanis kept us together with many goals and hopes ahead. For many of us, we started to reimagine our lives differently. We’ve agreed that this pandemic gave us a chance for renewal. Today, we are facing a grave worldwide threat to our health and economic stability. Kiwanis Club of Douglaston has a voice to cheer the community in many ways. From park cleaning to fundraising, we celebrated the best of Kiwani’s objectives. As one of the largest networks of the charity organizations, Kiwanis gave us a platform to be a greater self. With the help of our generous members and the government grants, our club is proud to launch the Kiwanis Hope Foundation to help the kids, who are deeply affected by this great pandemic. I hope our foundation could become a legacy that will continue to serve the vulnerable community in any pandemic we may face in the future. This year, we celebrate our 5 Anniversary. Every story in this anniversary journal speak to challenge, opportunity, and hope. We are excited to share them with you. Finally, I would like to thank our Distinguished Lt. Governor, Ms. Sandy Liew, for her leadership and guidance that have made us more productive and become who we are today. th

Year of

OX

Lunar New Year, as the western new Year, signified turning over a new leaf. Socially, it was a time for giving red packets containing lucky money, family reunions, visiting friends and relatives. This holiday, more than any other Chinese holiday, stressed the importance of family ties. The Lunar New year dinner gathering was among the most important

occasions for Kiwanis Club of Douglaston’s family. This year, we celebrated together at the Malaysian Restaurant, Papparich in Flushing. As usual, we were sharing a ritual of unity and prosperity, “Lou Sang (Prosperity Toss)”, as we toss into the new chapter of our life.

Earth Day, an annual global event, observed on April 22, celebrates the environmental movement and raises awareness about pollution and ways to maintain a clean habitat. On May 1, Kiwanis Clubs of Douglaston and Big Apple joined together to celebrate this significant event with its members at the Flushing Meadows-Corona Park. Hosted by Alliance for Flushing Meadows Corona Park and organized by the Kiwanis Douglaston Club’s PR manager, Anthony Tam. The event title is “Everyday Is Earth Day’’, a mission to educate our members and park goers to keep the park clean and lessen our impact on the environment. Our members are tasked to clean the lawn, where much debris is left by the public. It comes to our surprise that there are many beer bottle caps embedded in the ground and we have to resurface and remove them. After learning how to clean a large area in the park, our members appreciate the hard work done by the park employees each day. “It was a great volunteer experience to work alongside our members on a good day,” Coco said, a member from the Douglaston club who skipped work to participate in the event. On the other hand, the park coordinator wanted us to interact with the parkgoers by distributing the orange bags to them and encouraging them to keep the park clean and join the park volunteer program. “We love our volunteers, our park needs more volunteers to help with our everyday tasks.” Cassandra Hickson, volunteer coordinator. Each volunteer is rewarded with a special edition earth day t-shirt and an earth pin. The gifts are sponsored by the directors and executive team from both clubs.

We each have all the power to help transform our community. And we can begin right here, Kiwanis Hope Foundation. It takes all of us working together to reshape the future of our kids who are deeply affected by this great pandemic. At Kiwanis Hope Foundation, we have a strategic plan focused on education for those who need it. We are pleased to introduce our initiatives and hope you will join our journey to success.

Kiwanis Hope Foundation is recognized as tax-exempt under section 509(a)2 of the Internal Revenue Code. 100% of your donation is tax-deductible. Serving the Children of the World, Kiwanis International is a global community of clubs, members and partners dedicated to improving the lives of children one community at a time.

Amidst the pandemic, we have seen a national shortage of school supplies allotted to families in varying communities. Our foundation will use the resources to provide scholars who are in need of school supplies and the electronic devices.

The Hope Foundation will support under served communities by partnering with community-based enrichment programming by observing year-round educational and recreational experiences beyond academic comfort zones. Programming will increase engagement to real-life occurrences, innovative thinking, and creative analysis for youth K-12. Youth will participate in language immersion training, which supports cultural appreciation and scholarly linguistic proficiency—learning sessions in financial literacy, Art & Culture, Music, and S.T.E.A.M.

Today’s scholarships should be no different. We have an opportunity to support scholarly initiatives, academia and nurture leadership; via scholarships that track various facets of a scholar. Scholarships that support accountability, social awareness, artistry, technological advancement, and environment are just a few areas that should be recognized when awarding scholarships.

Make a lasting impact for children begins with you.

GOVERNOR’S FELLOWSHIP AWARD Make a $500 donation to give every child a good start.

DID YOU KNOW?

From April 1, 2020 through May 31, 2022, More than 200,000 U.S. children lost a primary or secondary caregiver due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Losing a parent may be one of the most destabilizing events of the human experience. Orphans are at increased risk of substance abuse, dropping out of school, and poverty. They are almost twice as likely as nonorphans to die by suicide, and they remain more susceptible to almost every major cause of death for the rest of their life. The fallout from the pandemic threatens to depress this generation’s prospects and constrict their opportunities far into adulthood. The ripple effects may undermine their chances of attending college and ultimately finding a fulfilling job that enables them to support a family.

May you continue the journey of success with pride!

Stewardship Program The COVID-19 global health crisis continues to wreak havoc for children and families around the world. Some countries are still battling dangerous surges that have overwhelmed under-resourced healthcare systems. In a home country to many of our members, Malaysia, harmful secondary effects of the pandemic have put an even bigger strain on already-struggling communities. Many Malaysians are still at greater risk of hunger, malnutrition, violence, and neglect, while US is slowly recover from the economy. Distinguish Lt. Governor, Sandy Liew, started the stewardship program to help the senior citizens from Malaysia and Cambodia that are in places hit hardest by this pandemic and its effects. Kiwanians from Southeast Asia countries, Pelangi JB and Cambodia clubs, are bolstering care by delivering foods and protective equipment to the elderly community every month. Thanks to generous donors from Kiwanis Club of Douglaston, who responded with generosity and solidarity to this stewardship program.

BRITTANY FELLOWSHIP

Brittany has been a victim of Lyme Disease since two years of age. She has been engaged in a long, difficult battle. In April 1998, she suffered a setback and was removed from school for a period of two years. The spirochete, which has plagued her body since infancy, dramatically reproduced and took a stronghold. On occasion her fragile body would slump to the floor in a fetal position, limp and exhausted. Brittany is intravenously treated for approximately forty-five minutes daily, and routinely with significant doses of prescription drugs through a shunt in her chest. The weekly cost of the prescription drugs range from $1,000 to $3,000. There is no cure for her and her life is complicated at best. The Kiwanis Pediatric Lyme Disease Foundation was established to help pay for the treatment and medication of a child with this ever growing disease. Unfortunately most insurance companies DO NOT pay for the treatment, a treatment which is very expensive.
