Είναι ένα κοσμοπολίτικο νησί με εξαίρετες τουριστικές υποδομές, το μόνο με αεροδρόμιο στις Σποράδες, το οποίο συνδυάζει ιδανικά τη νησιώτικη παράδοση με τις σύγχρονες ανέσεις, με σεβασμό στο φυσικό περιβάλλον και οικολογική συνείδηση. Skiathos today Nowadays, Skiathos is the Garden of Eden that every traveller seeks, combining lush landscape with endless beaches, coves and bays bordered by the emerald waters of the Aegean Sea. It is a cosmopolitan island with excellent tourist infrastructure, the only one with airpor t among Sporades, which combines the island tradition with modern comforts, along with ecological consciousness and respect to the natural environment. The modern town of Skiathos is amphitheatrically built in a sheltered bay, divided in two parts by the small peninsula Burtzi. The streets are narrow and cobbled and the houses small, two-storey, white with tiled roofs. The central road Papadiamantis is full of shops and cute café-bars. For gourmands there are taverns and restaurants for every taste, whilst nightlife has nothing to envy from the mainland cities.

Skiathos is situated to central Greece and is the closest island to the mainland among Sporades. It has more than 60 beaches that create perfect contrast with the lush vegetation of the island. It is 41 nautical miles from the capital of Magnesia, Volos and just 2.4 miles from the coasts of South Pelion. The island is 48 square km. Skiathos town is the only settlement with about 6,000 inhabitants. The main street is called peripheral, begins from the city and ends after 14 km at Koukounaries. In the municipality of Skiathos belong also six uninhabited green islands with beautiful beaches, Arcos, Tsougrias, Mikros Tsougrias, Maragos, Aspronisia and Troulonisi. The climate of Skiathos is similar to the climate of Pelion. Winters are mild with heavy rains and summers are hot and sunny, but significantly cooler than these in Cyclades, because of the rich vegetation. Because of the mild climate, the tourist season extends from April to October. In late July and early August you will find here the phenomenon of yearly winds as well, bringing the much needed freshness into the heart of summer. The annual average temperature rises to 17o C (62,6o F).
H Σκιάθος βρίσκεται στο κέντρο της Ελλάδας και είναι το πιο κοντινό στη στεριά νησί των Β. Σποράδων. Διαθέτει πάνω από 60 παραλίες που δημιουργούν ιδανική αντίθεση με την πλούσια βλάστηση του νησιού. Απέχει 41 ναυτ. μίλια από την πρωτεύουσα του νομού Μαγνησίας, το Βόλο και μόλις 2,4 μίλια από τις ακτές του νοτίου Πηλίου. Η έκταση του νησιού είναι 48 τ.χλμ. Η πόλη της Σκιάθου είναι ο μόνος οικισμός με περίπου 6.000 κατοίκους. Η κεντρική οδός ονομάζεται περιφερειακός, ξεκινάει από την πόλη και φτάνει μετά από 14 χλμ. στις Κουκουναριές. Στο δήμο Σκιάθου ανήκουν επίσης έξι ακατοίκητα, καταπράσινα νησάκια με όμορφες παραλίες, η Άρκος, ο Τσουγκριάς, ο Μικρός Τσουγκριάς, ο Μαραγκός, η Ασπρόνησος και το Τρουλονήσι. Το κλίμα της Σκιάθου είναι παρόμοιο με αυτό του Πηλίου. Οι χειμώνες είναι ήπιοι με έντονες βροχοπτώσεις και τα καλοκαίρια ζεστά και ηλιόλουστα, αλλά σαφώς πιο δροσερά σε σύγκριση με τις Κυκλάδες, λόγω της πλούσιας βλάστησης. Λόγω του ήπιου κλίματος, η τουριστική σεζόν εκτείνεται από τον Απρίλιο μέχρι και τον Οκτώβριο. Στα τέλη Ιουλίου και αρχές Αυγούστου συναντάται και εδώ το φαινόμενο των μελτεμιών, που φέρνουν την πολυπόθητη δροσιά μέσα στην καρδιά του καλοκαιριού. Η μέση ετήσια θερμοκρασία ανέρχεται στους 17ο C.

Myth or reality?
Μύθος ή πραγματικότητα;
Οnce upon a time, a few thousand years ago, in a small but very beautiful country called Greece lived two twin giants, Otos and Ephialtes. They were still small children, nonetheless had great dreams. They wanted to place Mount Ossa onto Olympus and Pelion onto Ossa in order to make a ladder to ascend to heaven. Therefore they were sitting next to the shore and were exercising their hands by throwing pebbles into the sea. They were choosing round and flat pebbles and were throwing them with a sharp and skillful flick of the wrist parallel to the surface of the water. The pebbles bounced several times before sinking in the emerald waters of the Aegean Sea. From these pebbles emerged and were created Sporades Islands, namelySkiathos, Skopelos, Alonissos, Skyros and many other smaller ones.
Mια φορά κι έναν καιρό, μερικές χιλιάδες χρόνια πίσω, σε μια μικρή, αλλά πανέμορφη χώρα που λέγεται Ελλάδα, ζούσαν δύο δίδυμοι γίγαντες, ο Ώτος και ο Εφιάλτης. Ήσαν μικρά παιδιά ακόμη, αλλά έκαναν μεγάλα όνειρα. Ήθελαν να βάλουν το βουνό Όσσα επάνω στον Όλυμπο και το Πήλιο επάνω στην Όσσα για να κάνουν σκάλα να ανεβούν στον ουρανό. Γι’ αυτό, κάθονταν στο γιαλό και γύμναζαν τα χέρια τους ρίχνοντας βοτσαλάκια στη θάλασσα. Διάλεγαν στρογγυλά και πλατιά βότσαλα και τα έριχναν με μια απότομη και επιδέξια κίνηση του καρπού παράλληλα με την επιφάνεια της θάλασσας. Τότε αυτά αναπηδούσαν αρκετές φορές πριν βυθιστούν στα σμαραγδένια νερά του Αιγαίου Πελάγους. Από αυτά τα βότσαλα ξεφύτρωσαν και δημιουργήθηκαν οι Σποράδες νήσοι, δηλαδή η Σκιάθος, η Σκόπελος, η Αλόννησος, η Σκύρος και πολλά άλλα μικρότερα νησάκια. Υπάρχουν τρεις μύθοι που εξηγούν πώς πήρε το όνομά του το νησί. Ο ένας αναφέρει πως οι κάτοικοι της Σκιάθου ήταν λάτρεις του θεού της γονιμότητας Διονύσου, του οποίου ένα από τα λατρευτικά ονόματα ήταν «Σκιάνθιος». Ο άλλος λέει ότι το «Σκιάθος» προέρχεται από τη σκιά του όρους Άθως, διότι αν ανεβεί κάποιος στο όρος μπορεί να δει ότι η σκιά του δείχνει προς το νησί. Ο τρίτος (και εγκυρότερος) εξηγεί ότι η Σκιάθος ονομάστηκε έτσι λόγω της σκιάς των πολλών δέντρων και της κατάληξης «-θος», που σημαίνει «τόπος».

Small island, big history
Μικρό νησί, μεγάλη ιστορία
Skiathos has been inhabited since prehistoric times by Pelasgians and later possibly by Carians and Cretans. In the seventh century, the island was colonized by Chalcidians, who had built their housing estate in the southeastern part of the island, on a hill, as to exist two ports. This town was inhabited during the Classical, Hellenistic and Byzantine times. Later the medieval town was built in the northern part of the island, the Castle, which is kept up to date as an archaeological site. Skiathos town was firmly allied to Athens, both in the First and in the Second Athenian League. For the Byzantine period there is not much information; however we know that the island was hit hard by Saracen pirates’ raids. Piracy continued both during the brief Venetian domination and the long Turkish one. In September 1807, the first Greek flag was created with a blue background and white cross in the middle in the Monastery of the Annunciation. This monastery was used also as a hospital for several important heroes during the Revolution. The island had a significant contribution with its navy during the Greek Revolution of 1821 and became part of the first Greek state.
H Σκιάθος κατοικήθηκε ήδη από τα προϊστορικά χρόνια από τους Πελασγούς και αργότερα πιθανόν από Κάρες και Κρήτες. Κατά τον έβδομο αιώνα το νησί αποικήθηκε από Χαλκιδείς, οι οποίοι έχτισαν τον οικισμό τους στο νοτιοανατολικό μέρος του νησιού, στο ύψωμα, για να υπάρχουν δύο λιμάνια. Η πόλη αυτή κατοικήθηκε κατά τη διάρκεια των κλασικών, βυζαντινών και ελληνιστικών χρόνων. Αργότερα χτίστηκε η μεσαιωνική πόλη στο βόρειο τμήμα του νησιού, το Κάστρο, η οποία διατηρείται μέχρι και σήμερα σαν αρχαιολογικός χώρος. Η πόλη της Σκιάθου ήταν σταθερά σύμμαχος των Αθηναίων, τόσο στην Α’ όσο και στη Β’ Αθηναϊκή Συμμαχία. Για τη βυζαντινή περίοδο δεν έχουμε πολλές πληροφορίες, είναι γνωστό πάντως πως το νησί υπέφερε πολύ από επιδρομές Σαρακηνών πειρατών. Το φαινόμενο της πειρατείας συνεχίστηκε τόσο κατά τη διάρκεια της σύντομης Ενετοκρατίας, όσο και στην Τουρκοκρατία. Το Σεπτέμβριο του 1807 δημιουργήθηκε η πρώτη ελληνική σημαία με γαλάζιο φόντο και άσπρο σταυρό στη μέση στη μονή του Ευαγγελισμού της Θεοτόκου. Το μοναστήρι αυτό λειτουργούσε και ως νοσοκομείο για πολλούς σημαντικούς ήρωες κατά τη διάρκεια της Επανάστασης. Η Σκιάθος είχε σημαντική συνεισφορά με το ναυτικό της στην Ελληνική Επανάσταση του 1821 και αποτέλεσε τμήμα του πρώτου ελληνικού κράτους.

Skiathos Island is the gourmand’s paradise.The local restaurants offer delicacies of every kind or origin with fresh, locally produced biological vegetables, fruits, olive oil, olives and honey, as well as fine local livestock and dairy products. You should definitely try Greek and local specialties, such as sweet and savory pies, gemista (stuffed tomatoes and peppers) with minced meat, rice and herbs, yaprakia (vine leaves stuffed with minced meat and rice) with yogurt sauce, mousaka (eggplants and potatoes baked with minced meat and béchamel sauce), ghewvetsi (veal with pasta in the oven), cabbage leaves stuffed with minced meat and egg-lemon sauce, zucchini patties etc. Don’t miss the delicious homemade pies with wild mountain greens which abound in Skiathos. Fresh fish and seafood own a prominent place and are offered in abundance in all restaurants of the island. With those products the chefs produce culinary miracles, like pasta with sea urchin eggs and spaghetti with lobster, octopus with macaroni or stew, salatouri (salad with fish filet and pars ley), mussel pilaf, crabs in a pot with zucchini and dill, shrimps with wild herbs, anchovies oregano etc. Most taverns and restaurants congregate in the town of Skiathos, as well as at the beaches and some hotels. You can choose between many different flavors and venues, from the classic Greek souvlaki to restaurants with French, Italian, Spanish and Asian cuisine. Do not forget to taste local desserts like chamali and especially “white”, a conserve dessert which is made of almonds. The island also produces excellent white wine and tsipouro. Given the breathtaking views over the Aegean Sea in combination with the beautiful natural environment, wherever you may go to eat in Skiathos you will enjoy an idyllic and romantic atmosphere scented by the sea and the starry sky.

Οι περισσότερες ταβέρνες και εστιατόρια συγκεντρώνονται στην πόλη της Σκιάθου, καθώς και σε παραλίες και ξενοδοχεία. Giannis Baxevanis was born in Athens and graduated from the School of Tourist Vocations with honours. He travelled to various European countries to gain experience from different cuisines and his talent was soon acknowledged with various awards from fairs, organizations and magazines, including the International Gastronomic Academy’s Chef de l’avenir. He is particularly proud of the Chef of the Year award, which he has won twice. After returning to Greece, he worked at top restaurants and hotels, including Elounda Bay, Mirabello and Mykonos Blue. He holds the post of gastronomic consultant at N.J.V. Athens-Plaza hotel at Syntagma Square and of the beautiful Six Keys hotel at Afissos, while also managing the famous Elia restaurant in Dubai. Annually, he organizes the famous Greek Gastronomic Festival in Lausanne, Switzerland. Athinorama magazine (Greece’s equivalent of Time Out) has written about him, “When shepherd’s needles, hartworts, dandelions and nettles are piled on the benches, the name of just one chef comes to mind: Giannis Baxevanis, the maestro of wild greens and herbs of the Greek earth!” And France’s Le Monde newspaper, “They called him ‘crazy’ when he dared to swap the fois gras for his wild greens. He has revised the Greek culinary armory to create a gastronomy that is ultra-modern, light and deeply rooted in tradition”.

Spinach pie with hand-made pastry Σπανακόπιτα με χειροποίητη ζύμη INGREDIENTS For the spinach filling 1kg fresh spinach Fresh dill 100g feta cheese, crumbled Leaves of fresh mint Dash of olive oil Pepper
For the pastry 1kg all-purpose flour Dash of olive oil Water (as needed) Salt and pepper
METHOD To make the filling, simply put all of the ingredients in a big bowl and mix them up. For the pastry, knead all of the ingredients together until it makes a dough. Let it rest for 15 minutes. With a pin, roll out two thin sheets. Sprinkle a baking tray with olive oil. Place one of the thin sheets on the bottom of the tray. Spoon out the spinach mixture on top of the sheet. Place the second sheet on top of the mixture. Bake in a pre-heated oven for 35 minutes at 180°C.
ΣΥΣΤΑΤΙΚΑ Για τη γέμιση σπανάκι 1 κιλό φρέσκο σπανάκι Φρέσκο άνηθο 100γρ τυρί φέτα, θρυμματισμένη Φύλλα φρέσκου δυόσμου Ελαιολάδο πιπέρι
Για τη ζύμη 1 κιλό αλεύρι για όλες τις χρήσεις Ελαιολάδο Νερό (όσο χρειαστεί) Αλατοπίπερο
ΜΕΘΟΔΟΣ Για τη γέμιση, απλά βάλτε όλα τα υλικά σε ένα μεγάλο μπολ και ανακατέψτε. Για τη ζύμη, ζυμώνουμε όλα τα υλικά μαζί μέχρι να γίνει ενοιέα. Αφήστε το να ξεκουραστεί για 15 λεπτά. Με ένα πλάστη, ανοίγουμε δύο λεπτά φύλλα. Πασπαλίζουμε ένα ταψί με ελαιόλαδο. Τοποθετήστε ένα από τα λεπτά φύλλα στο κάτω μέρος του δίσκου. Απλώστε με το κουτάλι το μείγμα στο επάνω μέρος του φύλλου. Τοποθετήστε το δεύτερο φύλλο πάνω από το μίγμα.

INGREDIENTS 500g fresh hammour Two potatoes One medium-sized leek Two onions Juice of one lemon Salt and pepper
INGREDIENTS Five fresh tomatoes, peeled and diced One onion, finely diced Mint leaves, finely chopped Parsley leaves, finely
METHOD Boil the fish in one litre of water for 30 minutes. Once boiled, remove the fish, but keep the broth. Debone the fish and keep it aside. Sauté the vegetables in a big cooking pot and then add the broth gradually. Allow the soup to simmer for 45 minutes. A little before the end, add salt, pepper and the lemon juice. Serve in a deep dish and add the fish.
METHOD In a deep bowl, place all of the ingredients, except for the flour and baking powder, and leave them aside until their juices run. Then add the flour and baking powder. Mix well and roll into patties. Lightly fry these patties in a frying pan with a little olive oil, at a low to medium heat. Once removed from the frying pan, place on kitchen paper to drain any excess olive oil.

ΣΥΣΤΑΤΙΚΑ Πέντε φρέσκιες ντομάτες, ξεφλουδισμένες και ψιλοκομμένες Ένα κρεμμύδι, ψιλοκομμένο Φύλλα μέντας,
ΜΕΘΟΔΟΣ Βράζουμε το ψάρι σε ένα λίτρο νερό για 30 λεπτά. Μόλις βράσει, βγάλτε το ψάρι, αλλά κρατήστε το ζωμό. Καθαρίστε το ψάρι και κρατήστε το στην άκρη. Σοτάρετε τα λαχανικά σε μια μεγάλη κατσαρόλα και στη συνέχεια προσθέστε το ζωμό σταδιακά. Αφήστε τη σούπα να σιγοβράσει για 45 λεπτά. Λίγο πριν το τέλος, προσθέτουμε το αλάτι, το πιπέρι και το χυμό λεμονιού. Σερβίρετε σε ένα βαθύ πιάτο και προσθέστε το ψάρι.
ΜΕΘΟΔΟΣ Σε ένα βαθύ μπολ, τοποθετείτε όλα τα υλικά, εκτός από το αλεύρι και το μπέικιν πάουντερ, και αφήστε τα στην άκρη μέχρι να βγάλουν όλους τους χυμούς τους. Στη συνέχεια, προσθέστε το αλεύρι και το μπέικιν πάουντερ. Ανακατέψτε καλά και πλάστε το σε κεφτεδάκια. Σε ένα τηγάνι τσιγαρίζουμε τα μπιφτέκια με λίγο ελαιόλαδο, σε χαμηλή έως μέτρια φωτιά. METHOD Lightly sauté the chicken in a frying pan with a little olive oil. In a cooking pot, place all of the other ingredients and sauté lightly. Add the chicken and water, just enough to immerse the chicken. Let it simmer for about an hour. In a separate pot, cook your child’s favorite pasta shape. Once cooked, serve the pasta with the chicken and sauce on top.

ΜΕΘΟΔΟΣ Σοτάρουμε ελαφριά το κοτόπουλο σε ένα τηγάνι με λίγο ελαιόλαδο. Σε μια κατσαρόλα, τοποθετήστε όλα τα άλλα συστατικά και σοτάρουμε ελαφρά. Προσθέστε το κοτόπουλο και νερό, ίσα-ίσα για να βυθίσει το κοτόπουλο. Αφήστε το να σιγοβράσει για περίπου μία ώρα. Σε ξεχωριστή κατσαρόλα, μαγειρέψτε τα αγαπημένα ζυμαρικά του παιδιού σας. Μόλις μαγειρευτεί, σερβίρετε τα ζυμαρικά με το κοτόπουλο και την σάλτσα από πάνω.

Yoghurt mousse with dried fruit caramels Μους γιαουρτιού με αποξηραμένα φρούτα και καραμέλα INGREDIENTS For the mousse 600g single cream 100ml fresh milk 200g sugar 60g honey 200g strained yoghurt One-and-a-half large gelatin sheets
For the caramels Skewers Dried apricots, prunes, dates Sugar A little water
METHOD To make the mousse, place the gelatin in water and ice to soak. In a pot, place the cream and the milk, the sugar and the honey. Place the pot on the flame and stir well. Once the mixture is warm (do not bring to the boil), remove the pot from the flame and let it cool for 10 minutes. Add the gelatin and the yoghurt, and mix well. Fill the bowls with the mixture, and while it is cooling cut the dried fruits into chunks and skewer them. In a frying pan, place sugar and a little water and heat until the sugar caramelises or turns brown. Then take each skewer and dip into the warm caramel. Leave the skewers to cool on a baking sheet. Serve with the set yoghurt mousse..

ΜΕΘΟΔΟΣ Για να κάνετε τη μους, τοποθετήστε τη ζελατίνη στο νερό και πάγο για να μουλιάσει. Σε μια κατσαρόλα, τοποθετήστε την κρέμα γάλακτος και το γάλα, τη ζάχαρη και το μέλι. Τοποθετήστε την κατσαρόλα στη φωτιά και ανακατεύετε καλά. Μόλις το μίγμα είναι ζεστό (να μην βράσει), αφαιρέστε την κατσαρόλα από τη φωτιά και αφήστε το να κρυώσει για 10 λεπτά. Προσθέστε τη ζελατίνη και το γιαούρτι και ανακατεύουμε καλά. Γεμίστε το μπολ με το μείγμα, και ενώ κρυώνει κόψει τα αποξηραμένα φρούτα σε κομμάτια και βάλτε τα στο σουβλάκι. Σε ένα τηγάνι, βάλτε ζάχαρη και λίγο νερό και ζεστάνετε μέχρι να καραμελώσει. Στη συνέχεια, πάρτε τα σουβλάκια και βουτίξτε τα στη ζεστή καραμέλα. Αφήστε τα σουβλάκια να κρυώσουν σε μια λαδόκολα. The KIVO concept is based on art in all its forms, so a gallery in the center of town is an essential part of it. The main goal of KIVO Art Gallery is the projection of the work of contemporary and accomplished artists, Greek or foreign. Its exhibitions are marked by pluralism and diversity, both as regards the views presented and the means through which these are expressed. We believe it is equally important to promote, project and disseminate the work of young artists, and for this reason we have established a group exhibition with works by new artists every summer. The gallery also organizes and supports other important events of a general cultural interest.

KIVO Art & Gourmet Hotel expands its artistic interests organizing two Greek contemporary art exhibitions in Skiathos during the summer season. The first will be inaugurated on the hotel opening day and the second in August. Valuable experience for this initiative is our last year’s participation in the «1st Contemporary Art Festival in Skiathos island» which was recognized as extremely successful proving that nowadays many travelers are looking for upscale experiences during their vacations. Bourtzi is a small peninsula connected to Skiathos with a bridge and divides the harbor into two smaller ones, the old and the new. In the past it was a fortress, but today is a rare place for recreation, full of pines; always cool, with magnificent views. The old school has been transformed into a cultural center with elegant and functional meeting rooms and a really dreamy summer theater, where successful theatrical performances take place every summer. Evagelistria Monastery Museum

The holy monastery of Annunciation is the only functioning monastery in Skiathos. Located 5 km north of the town, it lies in a lush green idyllic landscape. In the spaces of the monastery you will see the monks’ cells, altar, hospital, hostel and cooking rooms with kneader and ovens, the mill, where in recent years a remarkable folklore museum is hosted, a rich library with patriarchal lead seals, precious manuscripts and rare books (17th-19th century), two chapels, water tanks, warehouses and stables. Kastro is the ruins of the old town of Skiathos, on a peninsula in the northern part of the island which creates a natural fortress, which protected the inhabitants from the continuous raids of pirates. The view is amazing and the beach below is offered to combine swimming with the visit to the remarkable ruins of the historical past. Papadiamantis museum
11 The house of the famous author Alexandros Papadiamantis, built in 1860 (as evidenced by an inscription on a wall inside the house), has become a museum and is a fine example of 19th century life, as it is a typical island storeyed house with the upper floor, where there were rooms and the basement, an open space with the house’s well in the middle.

Alexandros Papadiamantis Τhe “saint” of Greek litterature
Entering the port of Skiathos, at Bourtzi, the peninsula with the ruins of the old medieval castle that divides the harbor into the new and the old one, the bust of Papadiamantis welcomes the visitors, showing them that the island honors its most beloved child. Reaching the high level of the town of Skiathos, in a side street which bears the name of this great Greek writer, you will see the house, where he lived with his family and created some of his most mature works. He was born in 1851 at Skiathos. His father was the priest Adamantios Emanuel (called in Greek papa-Diamantis) and his mother was Angelique (Ghioulo) Morahetides, aunt of the other great Skiathian writer Alexandros Morahetides. He grew up with nine siblings in a religious environment and gained a Christian ascetic temperament, which he held until the end of his life. He took his primary education in Skiathos. He then started the high school in Chalcis, later in Piraeus and finished in Athens Varvakion (with many interruptions due to poverty). In 1872 he visited Mount Athos, where he spent eight months as a probationary. When he returned to Athens, he studied philosophy in the university, while at the same time he learned foreign languages by himself, painted saints and made his living with translations and tuition. Later, he worked at the newspapers “Acropolis” and “Asti”. He died in January 1911 in Skiathos, weighed down by deprivation and the deterioration of his health. Lonely and ascetic, a “world monk” as they called him, he described in his works with virtuosity and poetry whatever his penetrating gaze recorded from places and people. The great writer Andreas Karkavitsas said eloquently: “Skiathos of God is beautiful, but Skiathos of Papadiamantis seems to me more beautiful. When I read Papadiamantis works, it always comes to my mind, that the real poet, no matter how he finds life, he always remains a poet. Despite the fact that everything around him is dirty, everything that his soul would raise is full of purity and brilliance and poetry”. Having lived all his life in poverty and misery, he found refuge in the island and in his inner world. The writer revived in his works the traditions and spirituality of his compatriots who were tired of poverty and struggles, combining magically fluent purist with extreme local dialect. Of his more than hundred stories, the most famous is “The Murderess” and of his novels “The Merchants of the Nations.” He was praised by critics and surpassed the boundaries of Greece, having been translated into many languages and inspiring many foreign critics to engage with his work, calling him “the Greek Dostoevsky”. Two examples are the following works: Saunier Guy, «Lucifer and Abyss: the personal myth of Papadiamantis » «Greece’s Dostoevsky: The Stories of Alexandros Papadiamandis» in Road to Emmaus. The house of Alexander Papadiamantis has become a museum and is a fine example of life in the 19th century, as it is a typical island storeyed house with the upper floor, where there were rooms and the basement, an open space with the well of the house in the middle. Αλέξανδρος Παπαδιαμάντης Ο “άγιος” των ελληνικών γραμμάτων
Μπαίνοντας στο λιμάνι της Σκιάθου, στο Μπούρτζι, τη χερσόνησο με τα ερείπια του παλιού μεσαιωνικού κάστρου που χωρίζει το λιμάνι σε νέο και παλιό, η προτομή του Αλέξανδρου Παπαδιαμάντη καλωσορίζει τους επισκέπτες, δείχνοντάς τους ότι το νησί τιμάει το πιο αγαπητό του τέκνο. Ανεβαίνοντας στην πόλη της Σκιάθου, σε μια πάροδο της οδού που φέρει το όνομα του σπουδαίου αυτού Έλληνα λογοτέχνη, βρίσκεται και το σπίτι όπου έζησε με την οικογένειά του και δημιούργησε μερικά από τα πιο ώριμα έργα του. Γεννήθηκε το 1851 στη Σκιάθο. Πατέρας του ήταν ο ιερέας Αδαμάντιος Εμμανουήλ (παπα-Διαμάντης) και μητέρα του η Αγγελική (Γκιουλώ) Μωραϊτίδη, θεία του επίσης συγγραφέα Αλέξανδρου Μωραϊτίδη. Μεγάλωσε με εννέα αδέλφια μέσα σε θρησκευτικό περιβάλλον και δημιούργησε μια χριστιανική ασκητική ιδιοσυγκρασία, την οποία διατήρησε μέχρι το τέλος της ζωής του. Τα πρώτα του γράμματα τα έμαθε στη Σκιάθο. Γυμνάσιο ξεκίνησε στη Χαλκίδα, συνέχισε στον Πειραιά και τελείωσε στο Βαρβάκειο (με πολλές διακοπές λόγω φτώχειας). Το 1872 επισκέφθηκε το Άγιον Όρος, όπου παρέμεινε οκτώ μήνες ως δόκιμος. Επιστρέφοντας στην Αθήνα σπούδασε στη φιλοσοφική σχολή, ενώ παράλληλα μάθαινε μόνος του ξένες γλώσσες, ζωγράφιζε αγίους και έβγαζε τα προς το ζην με μεταφράσεις και ιδιαίτερα μαθήματα. Αργότερα συνεργάστηκε με τις εφημερίδες «Ακρόπολη» και «Άστυ». Πέθανε το Γενάρη του 1911 στη Σκιάθο, καταβεβλημένος από τις στερήσεις και την επιδείνωση της υγείας του. Μοναχικός και ασκητικός, «κοσμοκαλόγερος» όπως τον αποκαλούσαν, περιέγραψε στα έργα του με δεξιοτεχνία και ποίηση ό,τι το διεισδυτικό του βλέμμα κατέγραφε από τόπους και ανθρώπους. Καθώς εύγλωττα είχε πει ο επίσης σπουδαίος λογοτέχνης Ανδρέας Καρκαβίτσας:
«Όμορφη είναι η Σκιάθος του Θεού, μα η Σκιάθος του Παπαδιαμάντη μού φαίνεται ωραιότερη. Όταν διαβάζω τον Παπαδιαμάντη, μια ιδέα μου έρχεται πάντα στο νου. Πως ο αληθινός ποιητής, όπως κι αν την εύρει τη ζωή, πάντα ποιητής θα μείνει. Νάτος αυτός, όλα γύρω του λερωμένα, όμως κάθε τι που θα γεννήσει η ψυχή του είναι γεμάτο αγνότητα και λαμπρότητα και ποίηση». Έχοντας ζήσει όλη τη ζωή του μέσα στη φτώχεια και την εξαθλίωση, έβρισκε καταφύγιο στο νησί του και στον εσωτερικό του κόσμο, όπου αναβίωνε τις παραδόσεις και τον ψυχισμό των ταλαιπωρημένων από τη φτώχεια και τους αγώνες συμπατριωτών του μέσα στα έργα του, συνδυάζοντας την άπταιστη καθαρεύουσα με την ακραία τοπική διάλεκτο με μαγικό τρόπο. Από τα εκατό και πλέον διηγήματά του πιο διάσημο είναι «Η Φόνισσα», ενώ από τα μυθιστορήματά του «Οι Έμποροι των Εθνών». Υμνήθηκε από τους κριτικούς και ξεπέρασε τα όρια της Ελλάδας, έχοντας μεταφραστεί σε πολλές ξένες γλώσσες και εμπνέοντας πολλούς ξένους κριτικούς να ασχοληθούν με το έργο του, ονομάζοντάς τον «ο Έλληνας Ντοστογιέφσκι». Δύο περιπτώσεις είναι τα παρακάτω έργα: Saunier Guy, «Εωσφόρος και άβυσσος: ο προσωπικός μύθος του Παπαδιαμάντη» και «Greece’s Dostoevsky: The Stories of Alexandros Papadiamandis» στο Road to Emmaus. The KIVO concept is based on art in all its forms, so a gallery in the center of town is an essential part of it. The main goal of KIVO Art Gallery is the projection of the work of contemporary and accomplished artists, Greek or foreign. Its exhibitions are marked by pluralism and diversity, both as regards the views presented and the means through which these are expressed. We believe it is equally important to promote, project and disseminate the work of young artists, and for this reason we have established a group exhibition with works by new artists every summer. The gallery also organizes and supports other important events of a general cultural interest.

Ο κύριος στόχος του KIVO Art Gallery είναι η προβολή του έργου σύγχρονων και καταξιωμένων καλλιτεχνών, Ελλήνων ή ξένων.
