But when I was introduced to Prevail of Central Indiana, I was shocked by the number of individuals who are affected by domestic violence. In 2018 alone, Prevail helped more than 4,000 clients in Hamilton County. (Nearly 80 percent of clients are women and children.) Domestic violence and abuse are hard topics to discuss, so you don’t often hear about them. Some of Indiana’s finest nature hikes are in Parke County, so it’s fitting that the area also hosts an entire fair devoted to one of their native trees’ most revered flowing crops: maple syrup. If you, like so many, dream of drizzling the amber goodness on your breakfast plate, you won’t want to miss the annual Parke County Maple Fair, February 29 – March 8. The event began in 1964 as a way to highlight local maple syrup producers. The fair is a celebration of the end of winter, when area farmers are collecting sugar water from the trees, an important step in the syrup producing process. The Maple Fair is held at the Parke County 4-H Fairgrounds in Rockville. Each day, from 8 a.m. – 4 p.m., guests are invited to indulge in a hot stack of pancakes slathered in the finest local maple syrup. An array of maple-made goods, including cookies, candies and, of course, syrup, are available for purchase. The Covered Bridge Art Association lines the walls with one-of-a-kind paintings, and area artisans and crafters are on hand offering unique pieces for your home.

Let your curiosity take you on an adventure with turn-by-turn directions to nearby sugar camps. Once there, you can take a tour and see the syrup being made.

HEART HEALTH:

CHOLESTEROL IS NOT THE ENEMY I’ll admit it: Whenever I see a conventional lipid panel these days, I really don’t know what to make of it. That’s not a bad thing, actually. Why? Because a conventional lipid panel really doesn’t tell me, or anyone, anything. At least not anymore, it doesn’t. You know the test I’m referring to: Total cholesterol, LDL, HDL, and triglycerides.

Old School: The Conventional Wisdom “Myth”

Here’s what we’ve always heard: (a) that Cholesterol is bad for us, (b) that LDL cholesterol is REALLY bad for us, (c) that HDL is the protective, “Good Guy,” and (d) that triglycerides are, well… just kinda bad, though not as bad as LDL. For many years, this interpretation represented the best, most sophisticated understanding available regarding lipids and the role they play in heart disease.

New School: What the Science Really Says

The problem with this “Old School” interpretation is this: Today we know better. Today we know more, far more than we used to. Frustratingly, while our understanding of lipid metabolism (i.e., cholesterol) has changed dramatically over the past many years, this new information has been largely ignored by conventional medicine. Here’s a small sampling of what we’ve learned: » Not all LDL is bad. Some, perhaps even most, is actually beneficial. It’s only a particular kind of LDL (small, dense, oxidized LDL) that can cause problems. » Not all HDL is good. It’s only the larger, more buoyant HDL particles that protect. » In fact, cholesterol in general is not the enemy. It’s not some space-age, alien molecule invading out bodies and clogging up our arteries. Just the opposite, in fact. Cholesterol is an essential part of every cell in the body. It’s absolutely crucial for optimal brain health. And without cholesterol, we simply can’t make important hormones like progesterone, estrogen, testosterone, and cortisol.

On Beyond Cholesterol

What’s more, there’s a very strong, and rapidly growing, mountain of evidence that suggests that the real problem underlying heart disease isn’t cholesterol at all, but rather inflammation. And the conventional lipid panel tells us absolutely nothing about inflammation. Nothing at all.

Fortunately, a growing number of labs are now offering tests that measure and report (a) a more detailed assessment of cholesterol in a way that really matters, and (b) an array of important inflammatory markers, like Myeloperoxidase, LpPLA2, oxLDL, and hs-CRP.

Resolve to be Informed

If you’re among the millions of Americans who, once again this year, have resolved to get serious about their health, then start by resolving to be informed. If you have a family history of heart disease, or if you have other known cardiovascular risk factors like smoking, diabetes, hypertension, etc., then ask your doctor to help you dig deeper and order a more comprehensive cardiovascular risk assessment. Don’t settle for “Old School” when it comes to your health. You know better now.

Back in the mid-90s, sitcoms like "Friends" and "Seinfeld" popularized coffeehouse hangouts. That’s when Noble Coffee & Tea Company, in the heart of downtown Noblesville, opened its doors — 1996, to be exact — and it’s been a thriving business ever since.

This spring, Noble Coffee & Tea will add another beverage category to its repertoire: cocktails! The new offerings will involve adding boozy goodness to their coffee and teas, and introducing fresh libations by season. We asked co-owners Mark and Robyn Littler to give us a tempting taste of what's to come. Keep your eyes on the Noble Coffee and Tea Company, Ltd. Brain surgery saves girl’s life — twice “It was the day after Valentine’s. I thought she had the flu or had eaten too much at her school party. I didn’t know she was throwing up blood.” Maribel Ham called an ambulance for her 6-year-old daughter, Elsa. It wasn’t the flu. It was much more serious. At the ER, a CT scan showed bleeding near the part of the brain that controls movement. Elsa was airlifted to Peyton Manning Children’s Hospital at Ascension St. Vincent. Waiting was a pediatric neurosurgery team led by Jodi Smith, MD, an accomplished specialist who had recently joined the hospital. On arrival, Elsa was unresponsive. “It was so scary,” said Maribel. “But they treated us like family. They let me know that my daughter was in good hands.” Dr. Smith removed the right half of Elsa’s skull to relieve the pressure from the bleed. When Elsa woke up, she showed immediate improvement. But the day after, a follow-up MRI scan revealed a brain tumor as the cause of the bleed. Dr. Smith did a second surgery six days later to remove the tumor and replace the skull bone that had been removed. “It was heartbreaking. I was praying and crying,” said Maribel.

“Dr. Smith said the bleeding in Elsa’s brain helped the doctors discover the tumor.” The pediatric neurosurgery team was able to take out the bleed and nearly all of the tumor. “It’s a miracle that she survived,” said Dr. Smith. “Elsa is doing remarkably well. She’s made great strides in regaining her strength and movement.” Elsa recovered at Peyton Manning for three weeks. Maribel also had Elsa’s two sisters — 14 years and 7 weeks old — with her. What helped her through those tough days: the supportive nurses, child life specialists and chaplain. “One night, everything piled up on me,” recalled Maribel. “A nurse sat down and just listened to me.

It takes a special person to do her job, taking care of both the kids — and their parents.” As a result of her condition, Elsa experiences some lingering weakness, so she continues to work hard in physical and occupational therapy. She also began chemotherapy under the direction of Jessica Goodman, MD, to help prevent the tumor from growing again. “She’s very resilient,” said Maribel. “Even when it hurts, she says, ‘I’m fighting it, Mom.’” Elsa’s keeping up with her firstgrade schoolwork, going to school when she has the energy. Her main goal: This little fashionista wants to play dress-up again.

WHAT IS A HEART ATTACK? WHAT IS A STROKE?

February is often associated with roses, chocolate, and stuffed animals. But the heart-filled month is about more than traditional valentines – it’s also American Heart Month. This federally designated month can be traced to 1963, when President Lyndon B. Johnson established it under presidential proclamation. In his remarks announcing the first American Heart Month, President Johnson urged Americans to “give heed to the nationwide problem of the heart and blood-vessel diseases, and to support the programs required to bring about its solution.” Almost 60 years later, American Heart Month continues to raise awareness about cardiovascular diseases and the importance of living a hearthealthy life. Although American Heart Month is confined to the shortest month of the year, heart disease knows no borders. In the United States, it is the No. 1 cause of death for both women and men. And while heart attacks and strokes pose the same dangers for both sexes, women are less likely to act upon their symptoms. That’s because women are prone to experiencing “silent symptoms” like shortness of breath, sweating, nausea, or back pain. There’s also a misconception that heart disease is a “man’s disease.” In truth, strokes, heart attacks, and other cardiovascular disease are the No. 1 killer of Hoosier women. Each day, 23 Indiana women die from heart disease. So, how can women identify their symptoms, or recognize when they are having a heart attack or stroke?

Heart attacks occur when a coronary artery – which supplies blood to the heart muscle – becomes blocked and blood flow stops or is severely restricted. So, what causes the blockage? Blood clots and plaque buildup. When they block the flow of oxygenated blood to the heart, the muscle begins to die. A stroke is similar in nature but affects the blood vessels in the brain instead of the heart. (A “brain attack,” in other words.) A stroke can occur when the carotid artery – which supplies blood to the brain – becomes blocked. This type of blockage can be caused by either a blood clot or a plaque buildup. Strokes can also occur when a blood vessel in the brain ruptures or leaks blood into surrounding tissue.

This is often caused by high blood pressure, which strains the walls of arteries. In short, heart attacks and strokes are both caused by blocked blood vessels or restricted blood flow. But while the nature of these two health risks are similar, there are some differences in the symptoms.


HOW TO TELL IF IT'S A HEART ATTACK Each day, 23 Indiana women die from heart disease.

In men, heart attacks are generally the result of a sudden rupture in the coronary artery. Women, however, are more likely to have smaller, less fatal heart attacks. Instead of bursting, plaque is more likely to erode into the blood vessel wall – especially in younger women. As such, women are more likely to have heart attacks with no overt symptoms. This includes shortness of breath, sweating, fatigue, nausea, or dizziness. However, many women do experience classic symptoms: pain, pressure, discomfort, or a squeezing fullness felt in the chest, neck, jaw, shoulders, arms, or back. If any of these symptoms last more than a few minutes – or go away and come back – call 911 or get to the hospital. Every heart attack is different, so don’t ignore the signs (even if it’s “just” cold sweating, lightheadedness, or a slight tightness in the chest).

HOW TO TELL IF IT'S A STROKE In younger women, naturally occurring hormones play somewhat of a protective role. However, the risk of having a stroke increases after menopause, due to hormones, reproductive health, pregnancy, and childbirth. As such, women are more likely than men to experience a stroke. Because a stroke affects the brain, it’s important to think FAST (Face, Arms, Speech, Time). Smile – does one side of the face droop? Next, raise both arms. Does one arm drift downward? Check for slurring, too, and ask for a sentence to be repeated. Remember that time is of the essence, so if any of these symptoms are present, call an ambulance. It’s best to go to the hospital even if only one symptom is present.

WHAT WOMEN SHOULD BE AWARE OF Women face unique challenges when it comes to heart health. Pregnancy, for example, serves as somewhat of a stress test for the cardiovascular system. If there is a history of preeclampsia or eclampsia, the risk of having a heart attack or stroke in the next five to 15 years doubles. Birth control is not without risks, either. Oral contraceptives can also increase blood pressure. Women who experience migraine headaches with aura also have a greater likelihood of suffering a stroke. And while men and women can have the same discomfort during a coronary blockage, women are generally older than men when they have their first heart attack.

As American Heart Month reminds us, heart attacks can happen to anyone at any time, regardless of age or sex. So learn the symptoms and don’t be afraid to trust your instincts.

PASS ON THE BUTTER

How can you indulge and still get the nutrition your body needs? Easy, it’s time to make some substitutions! Everyone knows to cut back on red meats, but a lot of people don’t know how much flavor you can find in lean proteins like salmon.

Thankfully there are ways to get that buttery goodness without all the saturated fat that comes with it.

Salmon is a meat to add to your cooking repertoire. It isn’t just packed with healthy omega-3 fatty acids, it’s also a versatile staple for lunch and dinner. You can bake it, pan-sear it, or even grill it if the weather allows. This fish can pack a lot of flavor if you know what to do with it. Try making a simple teriyaki or honey garlic glaze, or cooking it with lemon and capers along with pasta. Oh, and a word about those meatless burgers. Go easy on them. It’s true that they’re made from plant-based ingredients, but that doesn’t mean that they’re necessarily healthy. They usually contain considerable amounts of unhealthy fats. Just keep thinking of them for what they are — burgers — and make them a once-ina-while meal.

Speaking of guilty pleasures, we have to address the elephant in the room: butter. We all have a love-hate relationship with it.

Instead of adding butter to the pan to sauté your dinner, try an oil. Most oils are packed with healthier unsaturated fats, and can add extra depth of flavor to your meal. Olive and canola oils are two replacements you might have on hand, but avocado and peanut oils are worth exploring for different ethnic meals. Butter is a crucial part of most baking recipes, but it’s not irreplaceable. Other creamy ingredients can do the trick and make your baked goods a bit healthier. Greek yogurt, applesauce and avocado can be substituted in certain recipes to cut back on saturated fat.

Ferns are not your traditional houseplant. But when planted in a gorgeous pot, their fun and funky texture fits right in with a modern aesthetic. This little guy is perfect for a countertop and can handle low light environments.

FICUS STARLIGHT

Variegated ficus plants are relatively easy to take care of and boast beautiful, colorful leaves. When done up as a kokedama – the Japanese art of growing plants in a moss-covered ball – it becomes an elegant, unique hanging plant. The ficus takes medium light, and when it comes to water, it can either be sprayed with a water bottle or set in a water-filled dish. Keep in mind that the roots can dry out more easily in winter, due to the furnace.

TIDBITS There are a variety of pots to choose from. Mix and match to create a colorful, complementary combination. A moisture meter is worth every penny. It’s the best tool you can have for houseplants, as over- or under-watering are the most common reasons plants don’t survive. Architectural design professional Adam Gibson explains the importance of making homes more comfortable and accessible to everyone, regardless of age or ability.

HOW IS “LIVING IN PLACE” DIFFERENT FROM “AGING IN PLACE”? “Aging in Place” concepts are focused on people who want to remain in their homes as they age. The type of design I do has a more in-depth coverage of people’s needs. “Living in Place” is a more comprehensive type of design. It’s about making all homes accessible, comfortable and safe for everyone. There’s even an institute dedicated to the practice, called The Living In Place Institute.

HOW DID YOU GET INTERESTED IN THE CONCEPT OF LIVING IN PLACE? For the last 20 years, a lot of my focus has been on kitchen and bath design. I moved into full-scale architectural design about 10 years ago and initially concentrated on Aging in Place concepts. Then I started realizing that I knew a lot of families who had unique, specific needs. I worked with one family who had an autistic child. I also worked with an individual who had vertigo and needed a horizon line to keep herself upright.

HOW WOULD YOU DESIGN A BATHROOM TO SUPPORT THE IDEA OF “LIVING IN PLACE”? For the client who had vertigo, I designed a shower that has a horizon line – a row of accent tiles – five feet off the floor. Because those tiles were a different texture and color than the rest, she remained upright without having to hold on for dear life. I also design towel bars to be actual grab bars. (How many people have had their child pull a towel bar out of the wall?) These are designed to hold up to 250 pounds, and they’re so decorative that you can’t tell it’s not a towel bar.


EVERY DETAIL IS IMPORTANT. WHAT’S A “SMALL THING” YOU ALWAYS INCORPORATE? Lever door handles, which are far better than knobs. People with arthritic hands have trouble gripping “regular” door handles. I like to use levers that have a “return” (the piece at the end that bends back toward the door). If someone loses their balance but grabs the door, it can catch them and save them from a pretty disastrous fall.

WHAT ARE SOME DESIGN DETAILS THAT BENEFIT EVERYONE, REGARDLESS OF AGE AND/OR ABILITY? Beach-entry, or curbless, showers are natural and aesthetically pleasing for those who have needs and for those who don’t. Doors, especially in a bathroom, should swing outward. That way, if someone slips and falls, you can still get to them. I like to have shower doors swing both ways – outward for safety, inward for aesthetics. It’s a small thing that may not be noticeable, but works well for everyone.

WHAT ARE SOME WAYS A HOMEOWNER CAN PLAN AHEAD? KITCHENS ARE THE HEART OF THE HOME. WHAT DO YOU RECOMMEND?

▢ Toe-kick lighting is for more than just aesthetics. They make for a good night light and show people the walk line.

▢ Lowering the reflectance of counter tops makes a big difference. Consider honed or matte surfaces rather than polished counter tops. ▢ Don’t put a microwave above a cooking surface. A vertically challenged person, or someone weaker than average, can get severely burned when removing hot liquids.

▢ Use push-to-open drawers, or drawer and cabinet pulls that are easy to grip for those with arthritic joints.

When planning, I often draw a doorway to be framed for a 36-inch door (which is ADA-compliant). I can infill it and make sure the electrical switch isn’t in that infill. Should the need arise, the homeowner can order a new door and, within a couple of hours, have a wheelchairaccessible doorway. If it’s a multi-story home, I’ll stack closets on top of each other. That way, you can easily remove the flooring between the floors and have an elevator shaft. This is prohibitively expensive if not planned in advance. But with forethought, there is much less cost.

LIVING WITH INTENTION LINDA ELLIOTT MA, LMHC THE NEW YEAR IS THE PERFECT TIME TO TAKE A FRESH LOOK at how closely aligned our lives are with what we believe to be our life’s priorities. Each of us are unique individuals, living unique lives. And just as a calendar year has different seasons, so do our lives. We can so easily slip into mindless routines and habits that made perfect sense in one season of life, but are no longer serving us well. And sometimes what we tell ourselves regarding what is most important to us, isn’t receiving the time and attention it merits. This new year, give yourself the gift of a quiet place, your favorite warm beverage, a piece of paper and a pen. Be still and consider what is most important to you. Begin by brainstorming, writing down everything that comes to mind. Put the list away for a few days, then go back and look at it again. Is anything missing? Are there things that should be removed?

Once you’ve determined your top priorities (probably 4 or 5 at most), review your daily calendar and checkbook. Does your spending, both of time and money, reflect the priorities you’ve identified? If so, wonderful! You have the assurance that you are spending your time and resources on those people and things that are most important to you. If not, begin making gentle, manageable adjustments in order to create a life in which your resources are spent on the people and things that matter most. Living an intentional life!

AMANDA’S EXCHANGE The first part of the year is a great time to take inventory of and clear out the wardrobe. Closets are often so full that the more we have to choose from, the harder time we have actually seeing what we own. HERE ARE FOUR PRACTICAL STEPS TO DECLUTTER YOUR CLOSET:

Pull out all of your hanging clothing and place them into piles, organized by pants, dresses, special occasion, etc.

Touch each piece before you hang it back into your closet. Consider these questions: » Does it fit right now? » Does it flatter me? » Does it reflect my current style? » Is it in great condition? » Does it serve a purpose?

If you can answer yes to these questions, hang the item back in your closet. When you do, follow these guidelines for optimal organization. » Group like items together. » Color-code within each grouping. » Hang pants and jeans lengthwise for easier viewing.

» Hang out-of-season clothing to the back. » Face all hangers the opposite direction. At the end of the season, you’ll be able to easily see which items were not worn.

For discarded items, divide them into three categories: » Resell: Pieces currently in style and in excellent condition; they just need someone new to love them. » Donate: Pieces more than three years old with slight wear but in good shape. » Discard: Items stained or excessively worn. Keep your closet fresh by repeating this process at the beginning of each season. Consider also removing pieces from your closet every time you shop. (If you purchase three items, discard three items.) This will keep your closet clutter-free!

I believe a lack of etiquette is often due to a lack of self-awareness. Many times, people unknowingly say things that sting and it truly wasn’t their intention.

To avoid some of these mishaps, let’s review some do’s and don’ts as we learn to encourage – rather than discourage – our friends and loved ones on their wellness journeys in 2020.

All hail citrus season! These tart, tremendous fruits bring light and life in the dead of winter to those of us in the upper zones of the Northern Hemisphere. Their arrival is often an overlooked gift during the season of giving. Selling seasonal citrus for the marching band in high school was a great fundraiser and an excellent introduction to freshly picked, packed, shipped fruit. Since then, I have developed favorites, elated when they show up in the stores in November. They include (but certainly aren’t limited to) satsumas, sumos, blood oranges, Cara Cara, Meyer lemons and ruby red grapefruit. You can get oranges, lemons and limes all year, but these special varieties are only here for a short time, so get them while you can! Citrus fruits are great sweet or savory, and enhance most dishes and drinks. If I put a slice of blood orange in my tea or sparkling water, I feel like a queen all day. Here, I’ve gathered a few of my favorite citrus recipes. One is an orange sauce I fell in love with

decades ago. I’ve lighted it up a bit, but it is heavy on flavor and perfect served with a mild fish such as sea bass or cod, and would be great with duck as well. I also embrace citrus overload on my breakfast plate. I use my preferred box pancake mix and elevate the stack with roasted sliced citrus, served with warm pure maple syrup and whipped citrus-mascarpone cheese. I’m also sharing a dessert called Pavlova. It’s an egg white base filled with a whipped cream that shines with three different types of citrus curd. So, join me in celebrating the joys of citrus – the sweet, the savory, the sensational.

Citrus Mascarpone Pancakes I must admit, a few years ago I tried to find the perfect recipe for light and fluffy pancakes and discovered that I actually preferred the “just add water� box mix. I would rather spend my time dressing them up anyway.

1 /4 cup pure maple syrup 4 large citrus fruits, such as oranges and grapefruit, peeled and sliced 1 /2 Mascarpone Grated peel from 2 oranges or grapefruit 2 tablespoons powdered sugar

1| Toss the maple syrup with the peeled and sliced citrus. Arrange fruit on parchment and broil in the oven for about 4 minutes, watching carefully so the citrus does not burn. 2| Whip the Mascarpone then add the grated citrus and powdered sugar. 3| To serve, spread the mascarpone on each pancake. Serve with the warm citrus.

Citrus Pavlova

3 tablespoons diced shallots 6 tablespoons cold butter 1 cup orange juice 1 teaspoon orange zest 1 /2 white wine a few drops of hot sauce 2 tablespoons plain yogurt

PAVLOVA

It’s very important that you don’t boil the sauce after the reduction and the butter have been added. I suggest doing the reduction part first and finishing it just before serving.

1| In a small saucepan, sauté the shallots using 1 tablespoon of the butter until translucent. Add the orange juice and white wine and boil until it reduces down to just a few tablespoons. (At this point you can remove from heat and set aside until just before serving) 2| Add the butter 1 tablespoon at a time, whisking until melted. (Carefully warm the reduction if you set aside.) Add the hot sauce and whisk in the yogurt. Serve warm on top of your preferred protein. I used cod on a bed of greens, but you could serve over rice and veggies. Recipe makes about 4 servings.

These will be filled with the citrus whipped cream

1 tablespoon cornstarch 1 cup granulated sugar 4 egg whites at room temperature 1 teaspoon good quality vanilla 1 teaspoon white or malt vinegar 1| Preheat oven to 300 degrees. 2| Mix the cornstarch and sugar in a small bowl and set aside. Beat the egg whites until they form soft peaks, then slowly add in the sugar and cornstarch mixture. Once you have reached stiff peaks, add the vanilla and vinegar. 3| You can spoon or pipe the mixture onto a parchment-lined baking sheet. You should have approximately 9 3-inch mounds. Make an indention with your spoon in the center to allow a spot for your filling. Place in the oven and drop the temperature down to 250 degrees. Bake for 1 hour checking for color after 50 minutes, using the oven light. Do not open the oven door! 4| Turn the oven off and leave the pan in until cool (about 1 hour).

CURDS LIME

6 ounces of granulated sugar Zest of 1 lime 1 /3 cup fresh lime juice 1 /4 cup salted butter 6 egg yolks, reserve whites for Pavlova 1| Place the sugar, zest, juice and butter in the top of a double boiler. Fill the bottom pan with water and bring to a boil, then whisk the ingredients constantly. Turn the heat down to medium. Add the egg yolks one at a time, whisking briskly until each is incorporated. Continue to cook until the mixture thickens and coats the back of a wooden spoon. (It should reach 160 degrees.) Place in an airtight container and store in the refrigerator until ready to use. Will keep for up to two weeks. BLOOD ORANGE

5 ounces of granulated sugar Zest of 1 blood orange 1 /3 cup of fresh blood orange juice 1 /4 cup butter 6 egg yolks

ASSEMBLY OF PAVLOVA

3 cups of heavy whipping cream 3 tablespoons powdered sugar 2 teaspoons of good quality vanilla 1 /3 cup chopped pistachios (optional) 1| Whip the cream. When it forms firm peaks, add sugar and vanilla. Divide in half and fold one flavored curd into each bowl. Chill until ready to fill Pavlova. To assemble, pipe or spoon whipped cream into the center of the pavlova. Sprinkle with chopped nuts.
