These functional boots bring major style to even the worst winter days. Whether there’s snow or rain in the forecast, embrace the new year with these top picks.

IN THE RED

PUDDLE JUMPER

Waterproof and insulated, these sporty boots have a chic ski-village vibe that will keep your toes toasty. Showing off that bit of glam faux-fur trim is part of the look, so wear these with skinny jeans or leggings.

The cheery color alone is enough to banish winter blues, but the rugged, waterproof soles on these classic rubber-bottomed boots is what makes them a smart buy. Try these with leggings and thick wooly socks peeking out from the top.

These are guaranteed to bring out your inner snow bunny (don’t we all have one?). They’re tough and practical—waterproof and insulated for those days when you really need to bundle up—but the faux-fur trim and mix of neutral hues give these boots a softer look. These moto boots are an undercover antidote to slush, rain and snow. Stylish and citified, they’re so cute that you’ll wear them every day. But waterproof leather, rugged soles and a cozy lining make them especially ideal on icky days.

If you’ve steered away from traditional tall Wellies, you just might love a midcalf version like this. These waterproof rubber rain boots have a micro-fleece lining, but they’re not all business—a pop of color and wrapped buckle give them a stylish spin.

Looking for a pair that can withstand the elements and be worn all day? With a casual mix of waterproof leather and suede, this pair won’t make you feel like you’re wearing bulky snow boots. A substantial sole keeps you sure-footed.

Happy 2015, kit readers! Before I tell you why I penned this issue’s welcome rather than the usual—and far more eloquent— scribe, Kelly McVey, let me introduce myself. I’m Ashlie, a recently reformed mess maker and managing editor of kit. As managing editor, my job is to keep the kit train and all of its talented, wonderful passengers on track. It’s a job that I love. Like the rest of you, the new year has me thinking about hope, determination and improvement. What goals can I set and realistically achieve? How can I make this year better than the one before? An integral piece to nurturing happiness lies in your environment; the space you fill, who’s in it and how it makes you feel. Our theme for this issue is, “New and Improved.” The pages are peppered with inspirational people and their pointers for becoming healthier, smarter, more productive, stronger and better loved ones. This past fall, we introduced you to Cassie Perry, a new kit contributor. We highlighted her home, but intentionally passed over her office so that we could feature it here. To say I loved her office would be an understatement. I wanted to live in it. It was perfect—lovely, with personal touches punctuating all the right places. When Kelly suggested we do a before-and-after piece for a home office inspired by Cassie’s space, I couldn’t volunteer fast enough. (You can see the before photos on page 53 and you’ll know why.) I worked with Hoosier Closets and the result is a total transformation, both in quality and expression. While I frequent our downtown Noblesville office, I do work partially from home. I was finding that the daily tasks that tethered me to my desk felt, let’s face it, a bit daunting and draining. But the personality this project injected into my home has been like creative kindling, fueling my passion for writing and designing in a way I never anticipated. It showed me how a special space can impact your spirit. I encourage you to find a corner, a room, a floor of your home and make it spectacular. It’s for your own good! On behalf of the kit team, I wish you a joyful, prosperous year. It is our hope that these pages and the stories they tell will inspire you to revisit your wellbeing, your relationships and even your space, and make it the best it can be in 2015.

RESOLVE TO REWORK YOUR WORKOUT STYLE Text by Stephanie Burkhart | Photo by Chris Whonsetler

A new year ... a new you. That’s what most of us are focused on this winter, right? Improving your health is likely at the top of your 2015 resolution list, but who wants to run around town all day as if they’re moments away from stepping into a yoga class? The solution is an outfit that can take you from your workout to brunch with friends—no fuss, no muss. Plus, who doesn’t love the idea of wearing yoga pants all day? (If that’s wrong, we don’t want to be right.) To get the look, add a few transitional pieces to bridge your athletic wear with your everyday, casual style. These six pieces can help you achieve the “on-thego” look you crave without appearing like you just jumped off the treadmill. In other words, you can keep your gym schedule a secret and look stylish while doing it. 1

3

Double-duty leggings

The mid-rise fit snugly hugs in all the right places. Moisture-wicking, breathable fabric keeps you comfortable all day long. The plaidinspired legging reverses to black. Two looks in one pant—smart for a styleconscious resolution keeper.

6

2

Westchester Chaturanga Tight, cobblestone grey, $74 at Athleta

2

Layers well with others

Indiana winters are unpredictable, which means layers are a necessity. Add a lightweight semi-fitted top under a sweater, and let the shirttail hem provide you with extra rear coverage and a peeking pop of pattern. Shanti Micro Stripe Top, black/white $59 at Athleta

3

Cashmere magic

A classic wool sweater in a slightly longer length can instantly make a gym-friendly style wearable for errands and appointments. A super-soft, relaxed-fit cashmere turtleneck does all the heavy lifting in this transitional outfit. The bold hue is sure to brighten up the dreary winter days ahead. Cashmere Surrey Sweater, fire red, $198 at Athleta

4

Abs salute puffer

A goose down vest will keep your core warm, but this one goes one step further. With its slim-fitting style and compressible design, it keeps the “puffing” to a minimum. Lightweight but warm, it’s the best of both worlds for running around town. Downalicious Deluxe Vest, Black $148 at Athleta

14 kitindy.com January + February 2015

1 5

Made for walking

Add some glitz to your feet with this updated version of a classic. With durable traction on the sole, it can withstand the slippery slush and snow of these last winter months. An insulated, waterproof upper keeps your feet warm. And the glitter? Just pure fun to dress up your feet. Sorel, ‘Tofino Boot,’ $150 at Nordstrom

6

Carry the day!

Can a bag inspire you to keep your resolution? We think so. Chic ruching details make this oversized tote double as an everyday bag—no one will be the wiser! Double compartments and a removable shoe bag keep your workout gear and post-gym apparel separated. This bag is sure to keep you organized to and from your next workout. Spring Tote, black/coral sizzle, $79 at Athleta

EXPERT ADVICE WEIGHT LOSS

weight loss for the new year.

Okay, so we’ve done it again. Too many holiday treats— gone to waist. Literally. Step on the scales? No way! Like what you see in the mirror? Well, um… It’s been another hectic holiday season, right? Shopping. Running errands. Visiting friends. Family feasts. Office cocktail parties.. Too many temptations, so little time. What’s a person to do?

11979 Fishers Crossing Drive, Fishers, IN 46038

Here’s five key steps to get things turned around:

1 2

Stephen P. Elliott, M.D. Living with Intention, INC

First of all, don’t beat yourself up. That helps no one. Just resolve to start 2015 off right.

Decide to get back on the horse. Intentionally commit (or recommit) to a better year ahead. Is it going to be easy? Of course not! If it were easy, we wouldn’t be in the shape we’re in (literally) as a nation. With some 69% of all Americans being either overweight or obese, clearly it’s not easy.

3

Grab an accountability partner. Have a craving? Call your partner. Feel like cheating? Pick up your phone. It’s a well-established fact that we — all of us — have greater success changing habits when we allow someone to hold us accountable.

4

Cut back on the carbs. Learn what foods are high carb, and then work on minimizing or eliminating them from your diet. The biggest killers are grains (think breads, pasta, corn, pastries, cereals — even the so-called “healthy” cereals really aren’t), sodas, candies, potatoes, and virtually all processed foods.

5

Focus on “REAL FOODS.” If it comes in a box, bag, bottle, or can, it’s probably processed. Don’t go there. Shop the periphery of your grocery store, except for the bakery. Spend most of your time in the produce and meat sections. Aim for at least 3-4 veggies per every 1 fruit you eat. Experiment with new foods. The more variety the better. Choose NATURALLY colorful foods like peppers, tomatoes, squash, eggplant, blueberries, etc.

Want to learn more?

I suggest a book called Why We Get Fat by Gary Taubes, MD and a DVD entitled Fed Up. Read, watch and grow into a healthier you.

ADVERTORIAL

Morsels to chew on • The average American has over 600,000 food items to choose from. 80% have added sugar. Why? Because carbs make you crave more carbs! • The average adult frame requires 50-100 grams of carbohydrates daily. The typical American consumes 300 to 600 grams daily. • Healthy fats (think no trans fats) are the most efficient, energy-dense foods ever created, packing more than twice the energy of either carbs or proteins.

NEW YEAR, NEW YOU LIGHTEN UP, LITERALLY, IN 2015 By Amy Lynch | Photos by Chris Whonsetler

As 2015 rolls in, many women find themselves making, or renewing yet again, a New Year’s resolution to lose those extra pounds once and for all. Yet, studies show that less than half of all people who make resolutions are still sticking to them six months later. Read on to learn how these inspiring local women found a way to turn their weight-loss goals into reality—and you can, too!

Kirsten Shaw Age: 43

Job: Admin at Indianapolis Fitness and Sports Training (IFAST) Weight lost: 115 pounds Gym: IFast

The “aha” moment “My family did the Geist 5K, and within a couple days, my husband started having chest pains. He was rushed to the hospital for emergency heart surgery. The surgeon said doing the 5K probably saved his life. The experience was a wake-up call about my own health. I became determined to get healthy and change my relationship with food.”

Weight lost While she shed 58 pounds prior, since Kirsten started strength training at IFAST 18 months ago, she has lost 57 pounds and gone from a size 20 to a size 14. “Getting a trainer who held me accountable, celebrated my effort and designed a one-of-a-kind routine for me catapulted my weight-loss efforts.”

The hardest part “Food was my drug of choice. I used it to console and celebrate. I felt eating poorly or excessively was justified for the ‘special’ times. In truth, life is just a series of ‘special’ times. I had to accept that if I wanted to permanently change my body, I had to create a new normal.”

What worked best

KIRSTEN SHAW, BEFORE

For Kirsten, the key to long-term success has been changing one habit at a time. For example, cutting out diet soda and upping the H2O. Or silencing persistent cravings by savoring a small portion of what she really wants. “A quarter of a full-deliciousness GiGi’s cupcake is going to satisfy much more effectively than a full-sized ‘healthy’ alternative that tastes like cardboard.”

Advice for others Put yourself first. “I spent a lifetime taking care of everyone I loved before caring for myself. I thought I was being selfless. It took me almost four decades to learn that if I took care of myself first, I’d have more to give. Being fit and healthy makes me a better mother, a better wife, a better daughter, a better employee and a better me.” Find IFAST at indianaindianapolisfitnessandsportstraining.com

17

Amanda Fisher Age: 30 Job: Business development, advertising Weight lost: 25 pounds (gained 5 pounds of muscle) Gym: Get in Shape for Women

The inspiration Amanda became completely consumed with motherhood, to the point where she lost sight of her own appearance. “I stopped wearing makeup and anything other than yoga pants, and of course, eating whatever I felt like without regard. I went through my closet and realized everything had a drawstring or elastic waist, and a tag that read size 14 or 16. I was done—time for help.”

The hardest part “Putting myself first. My habits were terrible. I would eat when I could, what I could, and whatever was available while chasing a toddler.”

Changes for the better Amanda keeps a food journal and relies on her team at the gym. “Those ladies have all the answers! They keep me focused, informed and motivated to keep up my new lifestyle.” She also pays close attention to food labels, makes healthy substitutions and allows herself a “free day” each week.

AMANDA FISHER, BEFORE

“I wasn’t exercising much at all, even though I was an athlete all through college and had a treadmill in my basement. The biggest change for me was learning how to make exercising a priority. Small group training is best for me. At Get In Shape for Women in Fishers, I train with three other ladies on weights for 30 minutes and then hop on the treadmill or elliptical for 25 minutes.”

What’s different now “Losing weight is important, but being slimmer isn’t the only benefit. I’m less stressed, I have tons more energy, and I’m a happier person to be around. I finally feel like my outside matches my inside!”

Advice for others “Start slow and start now. Don’t expect life-changing results the first week. You didn’t put on the weight overnight, so why would you expect to take it off that fast? Find a personal reward system that works for you and stick to it. Don’t sweat the occasional derailment. It happens. Take it meal by meal, and day by day.” Find Get in Shape for Women at getinshapeforwomen.com 18 kitindy.com January +February 2015

Chrissy Vasquez Age: 35 Job: Executive director of Back on My Feet Indianapolis Weight lost: 55 pounds and counting Gym: Back on my Feet running team and Naptown Crossfit

The inspiration “I was sick and tired of being sick and tired. I wasn’t an active person at all. I started working with a personal trainer and a nutritionist in 2007.” In 2009, a friend challenged Chrissy to run a half-marathon in Miami, which she followed up by running the 500 Festival Mini-Marathon in Indianapolis. Since then, she’s run 15 mini-marathons (including the past four 500 Festival Mini-Marathons in a row), switched to triathlons and competed in two Ironmans races. “I had a real awakening these last few months that for me, it’s not about appearance as much as being able to do what I love to do.”

The biggest challenge

Big changes

“Figuring out why I put on the weight in the first place and addressing those issues. I’ve struggled with my weight my whole life. My family has always celebrated with food.”

“I’ve transformed in mind, body and spirit. Losing weight has changed my approach to life, and my self-confidence has done a 180. It’s always been hard for me to accept compliments, now I’m able to do it more gracefully!”

What worked “Realizing this is a lifestyle change, not a quick fix. I changed the way I thought about food. On Sundays, I’d plan meals and package snacks for the week ahead. If I really want something, I eat it in moderation. Otherwise, I find myself eating all around it trying to satisfy that craving. Now, I eat to live, not live to eat. And I’m not a natural-born runner. It doesn’t come easy, but once I do it, I always feel better.”

Advice to others “It’s easy to say I’ll start tomorrow or next week or when the time is right. You have to start when you make the decision. Be patient and stick with it. It doesn’t have to all come at once. Take it one step at a time.”

CHRISSY VASQUEZ, BEFORE

500 Festival Mini-Marathon 2015 If you want to shake up your fitness routine, sign up to run or walk in the 39th annual 500 Festival MiniMarathon. DAILY MARRIAGE MANTRAS

F FAMILY

KIT

By Casey Kenley | Illustrations by Wil Foster

Don’t let the surplus of perfect Facebook updates fool you. Even your “friends” who post photos of romantic vacations and champagne-toasting date nights have to work to keep their marriages fresh and exciting. We asked readers and friends for their best advice for keeping a happy, healthy relationship going strong. This list of 50 daily mantras will give you plenty to pick and choose from over the next few months.

2. Express gratitude every day.

12. Don’t go to bed angry.

16. Work on the tough stuff together.

3. Go on a day trip. (Drive at least 30 miles from home. Hike in a state park, visit Oliver Winery or drive the Amish Country Heritage Trail.)

13. Sleep on it. You might have a fresh perspective in the morning!

17. Laugh as much as possible. If you can't find the fun in life, it's not much of a life.

4. Be selfless and take one for the team. 5. Don’t take marriage too seriously. 6. Remember why got you married in the first place. 7. Remind your partner why you fell in love. 8. Try something new together. (Get sweaty together with spin, PiYo or biocored classes.) 9. Forgive and forget. 10. Be honest with your partner about your feelings.

14

Validate but also help the other person grow through their tough times. 23. Go out with your girlfriends. (Go dancing!) 24. Whatever the question is, love is always the answer. 25. Remember that your marriage is a reflection of who you are. Choose to make it what you want it to be.

FLIRT AT LEAST WEEKLY.

KEEPING IT FRESH

WITH YOUR SPOUSE Mutual Respect Research says the most satisfying, enduring marriages are those in which both partners demonstrate high levels of mutual respect.

Do NOVEL things together. Mix up the routine. Share new experiences. Ask your spouse for a “bucket list,” and then plan from his or her list. Learn to be a

GREAT LISTENER. Partners who feel UNDERSTOOD feel LOVED. Remember, marriage is a

TEAM SPORT. Use “us” and “we,” not “I” and “me.”

PAY ATTENTION Look for the good qualities your spouse possesses and affirm them regularly. Be specific. Partners who feel NOTICED feel LOVED.

Increase TOUCH. Hold hands, rub shoulders, hug, kiss, give high-fives. Physical touch releases oxytocin, which strengthens emotional bonds.

27. Be intentional about doing nice things. (Leave sweet notes where they’ll be easily found. Tuck them inside a pocket, tape to a dashboard and roll up in a shoe.) 28. Don’t wait for special occasions to show your love. 29. Make time for just the two of you. 30. Make time for foreplay. 31. Block off time for regular date nights. 32. Make each other laugh! 33. Step back, take stock and be grateful. 34. Think about why you will love growing old together. 35. Work through conflicts over the phone to eliminate visual cues— eye-rolling, a smirk, pursed lips—from turning things negative. 36. When you have a bad attitude, change your behavior. The attitude will improve accordingly. 37. Go see a scary movie. A little fear can lead to excitement elsewhere! 38. Cuddle. 39. Don’t nitpick. Save the battles for the big issues. (Don’t spend energy fighting thermostat settings, a few dirty dishes in the sink and the occasional set of muddy footprints.) 40. Surprise your partner with an unexpected gift, voice mail message, email or meal. 41. Recognize the hills and valleys together. 42. Give your partner credit and get bliss in return. 43. Your body likely is not the same as it was on your wedding day, and your partner likely doesn’t care. Embrace your body for the amazing thing it is. 44. Accept that marriage is tough and you two are tougher. 45. Communicate openly and listen actively. 46. Never be passive aggressive. 47. Make changes in yourself when it’s necessary. Sometimes it is. 48. Be supportive and understanding when your partner is going through a stressful life change. (A career switch, parent’s health issues, child’s poor choices and “midlife crisis” apply.) 49. Recognize when things are really good and celebrate those times— even if it’s with just a toast over take-out.

ifty to fifty-five percent of women and 40-45 percent of men in the U.S. experience venous disease. Half of people over age 50 are affected. Active people in good health are sometimes surprised to see bulging veins in their legs or to experience symptoms such as pain, heaviness, tiredness, muscle cramps, swelling, redness or restless legs.

Jeffery P. Schoonover, M.D., FAAFP, RVT, RPVI Indiana Vein Specialists

When we walk, our leg muscles pump blood back to the heart through one-way valves. In varicose vein disease, those valves do not work properly and allow some of the blood to flow backwards and pool in our legs, resulting in the above symptoms. If an individual has bulging veins or is suffering from discomfort, treatment may be required to relieve symptoms. Because treatment usually involves a series of appointments over a few weeks or months, now is the time to begin treatment for healthier legs this summer. The first step is a consultation and if venous disease is present, we perform a diagnostic ultrasound mapping to target the areas of abnormal blood flow in the legs. With that information we develop a personalized treatment plan. Most patients with venous disease can be treated with Endovenous Laser Treatment (EVLT) and a course of sclerotherapy. EVLT is an in-office, minimally invasive treatment for varicose veins in which a small laser fiber is inserted into the vein and delivers energy inside the vein, causing it to close and seal shut. We use a local anesthetic; no sedation is needed. Following the procedure, most patients resume their normal activities immediately. Sandy Sumner is a recent patient who came in for a consultation because she was unhappy with the appearance of bulging veins in her legs and was experiencing discomfort. Because she had both varicose and spider veins, we recommended EVLT, Ultrasound Guided Sclerotherapy and Surface Sclerotherapy for her spider veins. She is thrilled with the improved appearance of her legs. “I am much less self-conscious now about how my legs look. The treatments could not have been easier. This coming summer I am going to feel a lot better about wearing shorts or a swimsuit.” If you are experiencing symptoms of varicose veins and want better looking legs this summer, call our Fishers or Carmel office for a consultation today.

Perk Up Your Breasts A breast lift can repair sagging breasts

M

any women in their middle years find that their breasts have changed and lost their shape and firmness. Women sometimes describe it as their breasts have “sagged”. The medical term is ptosis. These changes can be caused by one or a combination of factors: pregnancy, breastfeeding, heredity, weight fluctuations, aging and gravity. When these changes occur a breast lift, or mastopexy, is the solution. A breast lift tightens the tissue and removes excess skin around the breast, giving you a more youthful appearance. Sometimes the areola (the pigmented area around the nipple) is enlarged and a breast lift will improve that as well. A breast lift will not change the size of your breasts. When significant volume has been lost in the breast, implants are necessary to restore the breasts to the size you desire. In some cases, women want their breasts to be made smaller and a breast reduction is performed along with the breast lift. You are a good candidate for a breast lift if you are in generally good health and have one or more of these indications: • you feel your breasts have sagged or lost their shape and volume • your breasts are flatter and elongated or pendulous • your nipples fall below the breast crease or point downward • you have stretched skin and enlarged areolas A breast lift is usually performed as an outpatient procedure. Depending on the patient, recovery can be from a couple of days to a week. You can begin walking immediately but we advise no cardio exercise for two weeks. The results of breast lift surgery can be seen immediately. Some post-surgical swelling and incision lines are expected but will decrease over time. The final results will appear after a few months when the breasts have settled into their new position. We do not recommend breast lift surgery until you are finished having children because subsequent pregnancies can negatively impact the appearance of the breasts. According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, breast lifts have grown 70 percent since 2000 outpacing breast augmentations 2-to-1. A breast lift is a personal choice. Like any surgery, there are certain risks. Only a consultation with a board-certified plastic surgeon can help you determine if a breast lift is right for you.

WINTERTIME SUSAN SAYS: I may be in very rare company, but winter is actually my favorite season. On snowy days, I love snuggling up with a great mystery novel and an oversized cup of coffee in front of my fireplace. Plus, the cold provides a perfect opportunity to bundle up in yummy oversized sweaters and scarves.

36 kitindy.com January +February 2015

OUTER WEAR 101 Some girls have a shoe fetish, but my weakness is outerwear. I’m usually working on a budget, so investing in a coat in a classic color that can be dressed up or down is an essential. I love my ivory Bebe coat for this very reason. Changing winter accessories can style my coat to feel either work appropriate or weekend casual. For the office, neutral accessories in rich fabrics such as linen and leather are stylish and professional. On weekends, I opt for knit and crocheted items in cheerful colors. When shopping for a coat, be sure to wear a sweater. While a size 4 might look great over a tee shirt, you’ll likely be wearing that outer layer over more or thicker shirts and sweaters later.

IVORY THREE WAYS SUSAN SAYS: Creating multiple looks with key staple pieces is critical to building a wardrobe that is on trend but doesn’t break the bank. Here are three distinct and fashionable ways I like to wear this ivory a’reve dress. 1. For a winter wedding in January, I’ll be pairing this feminine lace dress with my black velvet Theory blazer, black tights and black Rock & Republic pumps. I’ll accessorize by keeping it classic with different strands of pearls. If I want a little more edge, I can easily switch out the velvet blazer with my black vegan leather jacket. 2. To transform this dress into a skirt, I’ll throw on my orange TCEC embellished sweater with neutral tights and my tall brown Adrienne Vittadini suede boots. 3. For a cute, comfy look, I’ll wear my Francesca’s purple leggings, Hem and Thread cardigan sweater and BCBG Paris ankle boots. I’m also big into cameos at the moment. There’s something very feminine and timeless about them. In fact, I helped design a collection for local jewelry artist Amy Cornwell, and this statement ring was my very favorite piece.

GET PRETTY IN PLAID SUSAN SAYS: Ah plaid, the quintessential fall and winter print I just can’t get enough of this season. For running around town on a weekend, I’ll wear my Old Navy Rock Star skinny jeans, Tommy Hilfiger plaid and U.S. Polo Assn. gray knit vest with my

gray Blowfish wedge ankle boots. For those days when my hair is less than cooperative, I’ll add this adorable maroon floppy wool hat that also gives the outfit a fun boho feel. For another great plaid look that’s ideal for laid-back days, I’m thrilled about an elastic

waistband. I like to pair my Vera Wang black leggings and Charles David tall black boots with this charming Sugarmint buffalo check plaid tunic. If it’s especially cold, I’ll add a scarf in a happy color for another layer that checks both the fashion and function checkboxes. 37

SPICE UP YOUR WORKOUTS SUSAN SAYS: Baby, it’s cold outside. As much as I love it, getting excited about burning off the extra five pounds gained during the holidays seems less than thrilling. To rev up my attitude toward exercise during January and February, I battle the dreary days of winter by busting out neon colors. Since my exercise of choice is running, I wear my Nike fleece hoodie and training tights to keep me warm during those frigid outdoor runs. It’s especially important to layer when continuing to exercise outdoors through the winter. Yaktrax, a traction device made of removable spikes and steel coils, has literally saved my life—or at least a few broken bones—on several occasions. You can find Yaktrax at Bluemile or Athletic Annex. No matter what your sport of choice, add bright pops of color into your workout wear to spice things up and help start the year with a little pep in your step.

FAVORITE WINTER 2015 POLISH SUSAN SAYS: I recently forwent acrylic nails after years of wearing them and opted for my natural nails. Switching out polishes has never been easier and I’ve fallen in love with this new OPI polish, Viking in a Vinter Vonderland. This vampy brooding tone looks divine worn with grays and browns.

MY SPECIAL OCCASION SUSAN SAYS: If you’re in search of something to wear for a special occasion—Valentine’s Day night on the town, perhaps—I recently purchased this entire look from Corner Cottage downtown Noblesville. I fell completely in love with the soft color, the lace detail and the whole whimsical feel of the tulle skirt. I recently wore this for a company Christmas party. I loved that it was festive and perfect for the occasion but I didn’t freeze to death like I would have in a cocktail dress. It provided the perfect coverage without feeling weighed down in several bulky layers. For the party, I paired it with a long strand of silver and pearl beads, a White House, Black Market clutch and my BCBG Max Azria gold shimmery pumps.

EXPERT ADVICE Q+A

Healthy Mouth Healthy Body

Keeping your teeth and gums in good shape plays an important role in overall health. Michael Edwards, DDS, MSD, of Implant Dentistry and Periodontics in Fishers and Indianapolis shares insights on how the health of your mouth can affect the rest of your body. Implant Dentistry and Periodontics 9865 E. 116th St. Suite 100 Fishers, IN 46037 8801 N. Meridian Suite 103 Indianapolis, IN 46260 Call 317-842-2273 and mention Kit Magazine to schedule a consultation or to receive more information indyimplants.com

Q A

Why is good mouth health so important?

There is increased evidence that oral health is the gateway to whole-body health. Several time-tested studies show periodontal disease is related to other systemic conditions such as cardiovascular disease, diabetes, osteoporosis and Alzheimer’s disease.

Q A

How exactly does good mouth health affect overall health?

The relationship between oral and systemic health is strongly supported by the evidence published in medical and dental literature. For example, it has been shown that improving oral health can decrease blood-sugar levels in diabetics. Also, pre-term, low-birth weight babies have been shown to be more prevalent in mothers who have periodontal disease.

Q A

What is periodontics? How is it different from standard dentistry?

A periodontist is a dentist who specializes in the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of periodontal disease, and in the placement of dental implants. Periodontists are also experts in the treatment of oral inflammation. We receive extensive training in these areas, including three additional years of education beyond dental school.

Q A

What are the biggest risk factors for gum disease?

About 30 percent of the population has gum disease. The biggest risk factor is a history of gum disease. Other risk factors include smoking and bites that don’t come together properly. ADVERTORIAL

Q A

How do I know if I have gum disease?

Q A

What can women do to keep their mouths healthy?

Q A

What else do women need to consider in maintaining good mouth health?

Bad breath or red color while spitting in the sink after brushing are the most common signs. Another sign is if your gums have receded to the point that the root shows.

Regularly seeing a dentist/periodontist and dental hygienist is the best way to maintain a healthy mouth. Professionals use instruments to remove bacteria that brushing and flossing can’t remove.

Flossing is probably the most under-rated technique in health care. Disrupting the bacteria that form a film under the gum is critical to prevent jaw bone loss and gum inflammation. Additionally, brushing the tongue will help with bad breath and removes a lot of bacteria that forms in the tongue crevices.

Q

Is the plaque in your mouth the same plaque that can affect arteries and cause heart attacks?

A

BETTER LIFE: MONEY

TOP MONEY TIPS By Tracy Line

1. Pinch Those Pennies. Everyone knows the old school financial rules: plan a budget, stick to it and save from every paycheck. But what else can we do? Ashley Barnett a finance coach and blogger on MoneyTalksCoaching. com believes we can save by using cash. When we use cash, Barnett says, we feel the physical depletion of money when we make our purchase. “While studies show that you will spend the most with credit cards,” notes Barnett, “you still spend more with debit cards than you do with cash.” Another way to stretch your dollars: buy used. Online retailers like Amazon and stores like Best Buy offer high-quality, pre-owned or returned items at a discount. You can also utilize Facebook market pages (e.g., Hamilton County Furniture & Home Décor) to buy and sell kids’ clothes, toys, household items and even furniture. Access to groups is by invite only (to ensure only reputable buyers and sellers join) so ask a friend or neighbor to add you to the group.

your receipt and if a surrounding store sells an item for less, Walmart credits you for the difference.

3. Buy Your Bliss? If you think money doesn’t buy happiness, it’s time to change the way you think and spend. Scientists Elizabeth Dunn and Michael Norton, authors of Happy Money: The Science of Smarter Spending, discovered people consistently receive more joy from experiential rather than material purchases. While tangible items bring immediate happiness, the effect wears off quickly. But a vacation, concert or a zip line expedition is enjoyed during the purchase and every time it is relived. In addition, Dunn and Norton report that once you’ve reached a certain standard of financial comfort, having more money does not contribute to one’s overall happiness. Their research concludes people in wealthier countries are generally no happier than people in poorer countries. Apparently when it comes to being happy, more is not really more.

4. Your 2015 Financial Forecast: Will the economy improve in 2015? Our magic eight ball says: All signs point to yes. Martin Crutsinger, Associated Press economics writer with ABC News, says that in 2015 the U.S. economy may enjoy the fastest rate of economic growth in a decade. Experts believe gas prices will remain low through at least mid-year (put that extra money in the bank!). In addition, jobs are on the rise. Demand from consumers remains strong, but at the same time, most of us are a little more credit-conscious than in years past. Financially speaking, this makes for a fine combination. Now that’s a forecast you can take to the bank.

2. Get Social. The techy bird gets the worm. Social media is the newest way for local and chain stores to advertise daily specials and limited-time deals. If you aren’t already, start following your favorite businesses on Twitter, Facebook and Pinterest. In addition, stores including Target, Hobby Lobby and Meijer offer their own smartphone apps with virtual coupons and discounts. Walmart’s Savings Catcher does your comparisonshopping for you. WILLS, TRUSTS & ESTATE PLANNING

In my estate planning practice, I often hear the following:

“I am not comfortable thinking about my death.”

“It doesn’t matter to me who gets my property. I’ll be gone anyway.”

“Choosing a guardian for my kids is too hard.”

“I don’t have enough property to worry about.” 42 kitindy.com January + February 2015

PLANNING FOR THE INEVITABLE A PROPER ESTATE PLAN MAY GIVE YOUR GRIEVING LOVED ONES DIRECTION AND PEACE OF MIND DURING A DIFFICULT TIME. Is estate planning really important for everyone? In a nutshell … yes! A common reason why many people delay creating a will or comprehensive estate plan is that they don’t entirely understand why it can be important. I suspect if most people thought about what might happen without a proper estate plan, they would reconsider making it a priority. If you don’t have a proper estate plan, which may generally include a health care power of attorney, will or trust, and general power of attorney, you could be leaving your grieving loved ones with a lot of stress and undue uncertainty.

would I need a health care Q Why power of attorney? A

A health care power of attorney is sometimes referred to as a living will. In the case that you are unable to make your own health decisions, this tool permits you to choose a representative to make decisions for you and direct that your wishes concerning certain forms of treatment are carried out.

Why would I need a will or trust?

A

A will is designed for you to leave instruction about how you want your property distributed after your death. A will also permits you to name an execu-

tor, name guardians for your children, determine how debts should be paid, etc. A trust is different from a will. It creates a situation where property is held by one party for the benefit of another. There are several different purposes for a trust, but many people choose a trust to manage the distribution of their assets upon death in cases where the beneficiaries are minors and should not manage the property themselves. If you have minor children, a will provides you with an opportunity to tell the court who you would like to care for your minor children if both parents are deceased. If you don't leave your loved ones and the court with instructions concerning the care of your minor children, there is an increased chance your children might end up with a guardian you would not have chosen. Also, if you don't leave a proper will or trust, your property will be distributed according to the laws of intestate succession. “Intestate” means that someone died without a valid will. Most people would not choose to leave such important decisions to the government. No one knows better than you how to take care of your surviving family and intestate laws cannot take into account every situation.

Where do I start?

A

Consulting with an attorney you trust is the first step in developing an estate plan that fits your unique circumstances. Many estate plans are relatively simple, and there is not as much time and cost involved as you might think. Please be advised this information does not constitute legal advice or create an attorney-client relationship and is provided for informational purposes only.

I’ve realized though what people may really mean is this:

“ I DON’T UNDERSTAND why estate planning is important.”

“I don’t know WHERE TO START.”

“I am TOO BUSY to deal with it.”

“I don’t have the TIME or MONEY.” By failing to plan for the future, you are not giving your grieving loved ones the direction and peace of mind they may need. Estate planning is important for everyone and can be easier and more affordable than you think.

3 THINGS YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT SOCIAL SECURITY The baby boomer generation is starting to retire in droves. Unfortunately, many of these retirees don’t have the company pensions their grandparents were once given. This means more and more people are relying on Social Security. One of the most important decisions people will have to make is the age at which they should begin to claim Social Security benefits. For women, this is an especially key decision. Why? Because women typically live longer than men. Additionally, in one-income families, women are still predominantly the one to stay home with the children. The age at which a woman’s husband claims Social Security has an effect on her survivor benefits. Here are three things women need to know about social security:

HANGING ON TO STUFF As I’ve gotten older, I've realized one major benefit of my profession is that I get to work with all kinds of people. Over the years, I’ve learned from clients that hanging onto stuff for sentimental reasons or keeping up with the Joneses undermines a good plan. I’m almost an empty nester and am realizing how much stuff (aka junk) I have. As I consider what I spend on my household, I’m seriously thinking I need to make changes. God has blessed me more than I dreamed possible. It’s important to I practice what I preach, so I will need to let go of some stuff. It will be difficult, but I’m excited! By downsizing now, I can put the money I save toward my future. —Nancy J. Wilson

1. 2. 3.

If your husband claims his Social Security benefits early, it can affect the amount of money you receive in survivor benefits should he pass away before you. Families need to consider the risk of collecting benefits early. It may be more advantageous to hold off on claiming your benefits. Check with the Social Security Administration before you make any decision. If you’re divorced but were married for at least 10 years, you may be entitled to benefits from your ex-husband. Claiming these on his record won’t take away from his benefits. And you don’t need to wait for him to file before you claim your benefit. For every year you wait to collect Social Security after age 62, you will receive a 7-8 percent increase in your benefits. This is true up to age 70; at this point, the amount of your benefit will remain the same, so at that age, you might as well begin to collect.*

I urge everyone to see a professional before they claim their Social Security benefits. Some choices we make in life are irreversible. Making an uninformed decision regarding Social Security benefits can cost you thousands of dollars over a lifetime. * Littell & Hopkins (2014) LO-8-2-4 HS 354 Sources of Retirement Income. RESOLUTION HQ Story by Cassie Perry | Photos by Chris Whonsetler

It's 2015. Time to get real ... organized. Enjoy working more. Find a peaceful place to make all those resolutions. Hunt down a bulletin board on which to post said resolutions. Pin encouraging quotes and photos over and alongside those promises to yourself because, once again, it's time to get real. For a surefire fresh start to a new year, declutter the mind and fill it with a canvas of positive intentions. An uncluttered work space can help set you up to focus on and fulfill your resolutions. 49

I hear it often from clients. "If only my (insert room in the home) were cleaner and more organized, I would be able to work more efficiently in all other 'compartments' of my life." I can relate. I find this Zen-like calm when I open a cabinet door and not only does everything in it not fall out, but it stares back at me as if it, too, were happy to not be crammed in like aching toes in New Year's Eve party heels! So where to start? In the spirit of keeping it simple and clean, here are a few tips to maximize your workspace.

TOSS IT Watching the hit show Hoarders just once is enough to make most of us feel like we don't need to make a single "get organized" resolution this year—or ever again. However, we all have those drawers, those shelves,

those overpinned bulletin boards filled with everything from coupons to birthday party invitations that are screaming at us, "Find time for me!" Listen to that voice and start taking it all down. Keep only items needed for one month at a time. Set a monthly reminder in your phone or agenda to make an appointment with your main "organization station" to keep it clean and functional. The same idea holds true for drawers. Going through papers, rearranging loose articles such as pens, paper clips, etc., once a month for 10-15 minutes can save you hours—and headaches—in the long run.

50 kitindy.com January + February 2015

STORE IT One can never have enough storage, as they say. Whether your options are open for adding more under- and over-cabinet storage when designing a new office, or you're making the most of the storage you have, the key is to make every nook and cranny work for your life. Have an empty wall that craves décor attention as well as functionality? Create a command center where all important dates, notices, school priorities, etc., can be easily viewed, and make good use of an empty wall at the same time. Adding in personal touches and fun décor amidst the musts and to-dos adds whimsy and style to an otherwise sterile "task terrain."

A trend we designers continue to see growing is combining the home office space with a craft station or lifestyle center. For example, once again utilizing the empty space on an office wall, hang a wrapping paper cubby with under storage for gift tags and ribbon. It's not only effective, but it's also on point to brighten up a wall.

COZ-I-FY IT As I sit in my own office typing away, the angry, red spell-check line just officially let me know that "coz-i-fy" is indeed not a recognized word. Given it's the new year, I'm forging ahead and embracing it anyway to convey the right feeling. And just as feelings aren't black and white, it's OK to pop in colorful accents and quirky décor to liven

up your office. The days of the traditional cherry wood desk set and matching bookshelves are dissipating as trends transition us toward brighter, more cheerful family headquarters that feel inviting to one and all. Much like the rest of my house, I started out with a light gray wall color as a springboard to allow accessories to stand out. To create interest under the cabinets, I found inexpensive faux "metallic" sheets from Lowe's and adhered them to the wall. The result? Instant glam on a dime. (See how this works in another setting as we move on toward tackling Ashlie's space, on page 53.) On the other end of the rainbow, however, if you prefer to have a brightly painted wall, neutral white

furniture will really make the color vibrant. Adding in accessories that complement the wall color can be a fun, inexpensive way to shake up your space as trends change and you're on the hunt for a little makeover! Sometimes just one little accessory can act as a starting point and inspire or lead the entire feel of the room. For your own home office command center, find the time to get it ready for an amazing 2015. Resolve to create and maintain a work space you love. It will love you back.

NOOK WITH A LOOK KIT’S MANAGING EDITOR NEEDED SOME EDITING … IN HER HOME OFFICE. Design by Cassie Perry | Story by Ashlie Hartgraves | Photos by Chris Whonsetler

When Kit Managing Editor Ashlie Hartgraves saw Cassie Perry’s office for the first time, she swooned and then jumped at the chance to pull inspiration from Cassie’s space into her own home. Here, Ashlie recounts the transformation, showing how an unassuming nook can command attention.

SWITCHING ROOMS Finding the right space for my "new" office took some strategizing. My husband and I are in the middle of an international adoption and wanted to reserve the dining room, where my office had been, to use as a dining room or a playroom once we know who will be joining the family. This meant we needed to move my office area to the front room. To make it work, we arranged our loveseat and side table by a bay window and designated the nook by the stairs as my official home work space.

PLANNING & INSTALLATION

BEFORE “OFFICE” IN THE DINING ROOM This space was supposed to be temporary. In our old house, I had a built-in office space that was lovely, but we of course couldn’t pack it up and bring it with us. When we moved into our new home, we got a quick $30 folding table from Lowe's until we could figure out a more permanent location. Over two years later, I was still sitting at the folding table. It definitely didn’t foster creativity. The space lacked designated places for storage and organization, with no drawers or cabinets to hide things. Let's be honest, it was hideous. It became a catch-all room, as you can see in these untouched, untidied photos.

You know how you felt on Christmas morning as a child? I was just as giddy when Hoosier Closets pulled up. Jonie Spetter quickly measured the space, and we picked out colors from her samples. She then planned out the design using a 3-D model that I could visualize. Nothing was missed. Hoosier Closets planned around electrical outlets, helped me determine what I needed from the space and ordered a custom cabinet with a slideout drawer to hide my printer when not in use. Planning out the space with Hoosier Closets was so easy, and installation was even easier. They arrived promptly in the morning and even took time out from working to play with my dog, Ruby—such nice people. They helped reinforce the value of working with professionals on home design projects such as this one.

SHINY TIN DETAILS

THE ABOVE-CABINET TREATMENT LOOKS COMPLETELY REAL, RUSTIC AND METAL. IN REALITY IT’S $20 PER SHEET AT LOWE'S. SHEETS ARE SUPER EASY TO CUT WITH SCISSORS OR A UTILITY KNIFE AND CAN HANG BY COMMAND STRIPS OR SMALL NAILS.

DRAW THE EYE TO ACCENT COLORS This pillow adds a touch of texture and brings out the other red elements in the space. Bought for $10 on clearance at Home Goods.

BALLIN’ ON A BUDGET Ashlie has a ton of Ball jars on hand and uses them for everything. In this case, to hold office supplies. Cost $0.

MAKE THE SPACE WORK AROUND YOU Hoosier Closets custom ordered the desk drawer to fit Ashlie’s printer. The slide-out shelf makes it accessible and functional. Hoosier Closets designs and installs closets, laundry rooms, garages and more. Visit them at hoosierclosets.com.

FINDING MY OFFICE STYLE Being a bit of a country girl myself, sprinkling in some rustic swag is super fun and makes my work space feel cozy. I loved collaborating with Cassie. For a good portion of the day, I just sat on the couch and watched her creative mind go at it. Due to our adoption, we’re on a bit of a tight budget, so repurposing items or buying things on the cheap was our goal. My favorite part of the day was when Cassie and I were about to go to a craft store to get some items when I told her to come look in our basement at our garage sale pile. I didn’t think anything was of use but Cassie thought otherwise. She grabbed a bin and just started loading up. I was excited because we were able to repurpose things I was about to give away.

CREATING & WORKING HAPPIER The new office nook is my creative sanctuary. I love working from home now and am so particular about being tidy and organized. I love that it moved from the dining room, which was in the back of the house, to the front room. Now I can look out the bay window while I work, and if we turn the dining room into a playroom, I can work from home more easily and still interact with our children when they’re playing. The quality of the office installation is top-notch, and I know this space will last for a really long time. What I love most is that all of the décor items were under $100 total. DIY sure is good for the budget.

DECORATE UNLIKELY TOOLS Before buying a new tape dispenser, we decided to spray paint the old one. Like new, and for $0.

PAINTING A BRIGHTER FUTURE HOW ART THERAPY IMPROVES WELL-BEING By Judy Burnett

I

f asked, most of us would probably say that the arts enrich our lives. What many of us may not know is that there is clear evidence that the arts and art therapy can play key roles in the health and well-being of older adults. Recent studies in art therapy, music therapy and other creative areas demonstrate that art can improve healing, reduce stress and help us fight infection. The National Institutes of Health has been reporting on their benefits since at least June 2008, when its News in Health publication reported

A AGING

KIT

that art therapy studies supported by the NIH showed that “art therapy can help improve health status, quality of life and coping behaviors.” The article also reported that music stimulates the same brain areas that chocolate, opium and orgasm does. Arts that involve movement, such as dance movement therapy, can also benefit one’s health. Fortunately for us, arts and arts therapy programs for the aging population and their caregivers in the Indianapolis area have grown rapidly during the past two years.

Creative Art Therapy

Juliet King, MA, is the director of Graduate Art Therapy at Herron School of Art & Design in Indianapolis, a Board Certified Art Therapist and a Licensed Professional Counselor. In addition to training graduate-level students for careers as art therapists, she has practiced as an art therapist for more than 15 years. “Art is everywhere, and it is inherently therapeutic, whether that is looking at it or engaging in creating it,” King says. “Humans don’t always have words for things, especially in times of trauma, cognitive disorder, or mental or physical disability.” Creative art helps people express thoughts and feelings. “Symbolism and nonverbal communication are very important,” King says. The field is growing so rapidly, she adds, that Herron’s graduates find full-time jobs almost immediately.

Art Therapy for Caregivers

Joy’s House, an adult day service in Indianapolis, conducts individual and group art therapy programs for its guests (clients) and an innovative art therapy program for guests’ caregivers. The caregiver sessions take place once a week for six weeks and include care for the loved one and dinner for everyone. Tina McIntosh, founder and CEO of Joy’s House, says caregiver support programs are needed. “One in three of us in the United States is caring for an aging or disabled love one,” McIntosh says. “That experience is physically, emotionally and financially draining. There will be an increasing need for caregiver support.” The Joy’s House program is free and open to caregivers in the community. People are welcome to call and inquire about the small sessions.

The Arts & Alzheimer’s Disease

Linda Altmeyer is the program director of the Greater Indiana Chapter of the Alzheimer’s Association and holds a Master of Public Health degree. She says the organization’s arts programs were developed to keep individuals with early-stage Alzheimer’s disease involved and active in the community. “We have a partnership with the Indianapolis Museum of Art ... patterned after a similar program at the Museum of Modern Art in New York City,” Altmeyer says. People with early-stage Alzheimer’s and their caregivers tour the IMA with docents specially trained by the Alzheimer’s Association to view and discuss four or five works of art in a group conversation. “I see a lot of joy among those who participate in these programs,” she says. The Association also partners with the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra, area parks, museums and historical homes to offer pop-up programs. “Though we can’t change the disease right now,” Altmeyer, says “We can change the journey.”

WAKE UP YOUR MAKEUP By Brooke Reynolds | Photos by Chris Whonsetler Modeling by Laura McHale

Walk through any makeup aisle at a department store and you’ll be inundated with flashy displays, luxurious-looking bottles and perfect, ageless women representing the faces of each brand. It’s intimidating! On the other hand, if you stroll through a makeup aisle at a supermarket or drug store, you’re left overwhelmed and alone with more questions than when you came in. Where’s the happy medium? Let this guide be your go-to for honest assessments of which cosmetic items are worth the department store prices and which products you should confidently snag at a discount store. The featured makeup can be purchased at Saks Fifth Avenue, Ulta and Nordstrom. 59

SPLURGE VS. SAVE It’s important to recognize what kinds of products make you feel your best, and then make your splurging decisions around those. So what is it about makeup that makes you feel good? Does your heart flutter when you find the perfect nude lip gloss? Do you feel your sexiest with nothing on your face but a good moisturizer? Or do you treat your going-out look like an art form? If you’re the kind of gal who just throws on a little eyeliner, mascara and lipstick every morning and only rarely breaks out anything else, invest in a great eyeliner, mascara and lipstick. There’s no reason to spend big bucks on special occasion makeup that you’re only going to use five times. You’re going to be more satisfied with the higher-priced items you purchased if you use them all the time.

SPLURGE ON EYESHADOW. Discount-brand eyeshadows never seem to look the same on your eyes as they do in the package; it takes heavy application to see the color payoff. Splurge on high-quality eyeshadows for smooth, even application and a look that doesn’t fade or crease throughout the day. It also helps to have a department store beauty advisor tell you which colors look good on you and how to apply the shadow for your eye shape.

SPLURGE ON FOUNDATION.

MAC Eye Shadow ($16) These shadows boast highly pigmented powder that applies evenly and blends well. Custommatch the single shades to create a look unique to you.

A makeup base—whether it be powder or liquid foundation—that matches your skin tone exactly and works well with your skin type is invaluable and can only truly be discovered at a department store. Eliminate the guesswork at a discount store; you’ll end up wasting money on color and formulas that aren’t quite right simply because you don’t have an expert to guide you. Clinique Even Better Makeup SPF 15 ($27) This oil-free liquid foundation, equipped with built-in sunscreen, actually helps diminish age spots the more you wear it.

SPLURGE ON LIPSTICK. SPLURGE ON MAKEUP BRUSHES. Even generics from Sephora and Ulta shed and scratch. bareMinerals brushes ($12-$30) These brushes will change your makeup life! The soft-tapered bristles deliver the perfect amount of product to the contours of your face. The result is a natural, flawless look.

Many drugstore lipsticks taste bad, smell funny and don’t go on smoothly. With something so close to your mouth that we oftentimes unintentionally eat, go for the lipsticks with better quality ingredients. Luxury-brand lipsticks also offer better color payoff and come loaded with liprepairing ingredients. Lancome L’Absolu Rouge ($30) This lipstick offers delightfully rich colors that moisturize and colorize in just one swipe. It replenishes your lips with antiaging ingredients, too.

SAVE ON EYELINER. Revlon ColorStay Eyeliner ($7.99) This automatic pencil eyeliner glides on easily, doesn’t tug on your eye and stays put all day. Its waterproof formula won’t smear, smudge or fade.

SAVE ON BLUSH. NYX Powder Blush ($5) When saving on blush, make sure your product choice doesn’t have any shimmer. Drugstore blushes with the illuminating quality look unnatural. So find a complementary matte hue—peach looks good on everyone!

SAVE ON MASCARA. SAVE ON LIP GLOSS. No need to be as picky about lip glosses, as most of them don’t have staying power or much color intensity, anyway. A glossy lip shine is a glossy lip shine, so stock up on the cheapies. Just about any lip gloss, no matter the cost, will look good over the brand of lipstick splurge we recommended. L’Oreal Colour Riche Colour Caress Wet Shine Stain ($10) This gloss melts onto your lips into a beautiful luster without the sticky feel. And score!—this particular product is reminiscent of the luxury lip gloss Rouge Pur Couture Glossy Stain by Yves Saint Laurent, at a third of the cost.

This one was hard for me because I believe there’s no price cap on having the plushest, fullest lashes imaginable. But I also realize the impracticality of spending $35 on a luxury mascara only to have it replaced every three months (that is, if you’re a follower of hygiene standards). But yes, there are drugstore mascaras that wow as well. It’s all about the brush. L’Oreal Paris Voluminous Original Mascara ($7.29) This drugstore mascara actually lives up to its claims. It separates and volumizes, goes on clump-free and doesn’t flake during the day.

DAY TO NIGHT There is no reason to keep two separate makeup bags for day and night makeup looks. All you need are these versatile products so morning-to-night makeovers are a cinch.

BEFORE

Makeup essentials for day-to-night:

DAY

NIGHT

1. Laura Mercier Smooth Finish Foundation: Use this adaptable foundation dry during the day and wet at night. During the day, apply it with a fluffy powder brush to get a sheerto-medium coverage that settles nicely into the skin. For more coverage at night, wet the sponge the compact came with and smooth it on your face’s troubled spots. 2. Anastasia of Beverly Hills Brow Pencil: Eyebrow grooming and filling are essential because they provide a good frame for your features. If you only do one thing, fill in your brows. 3. Clinique “Jenna’s Essentials” eyeshadow quad: During the day, use the white shade all over your eye—even underneath your eyebrow—to lighten and lift your eyelid. And then use the lighter brown in the crease to softly define the shape of your eye. For night, you’ll want to add deeper colors so your eyes stand out in dim lighting. Buff in the darker brown in the crease and smudge a little bit of the black in the outer corner. 4. Lancome Blush Subtil contour blush palette: Use the pink shade on the apples of your cheeks during the day, concentrating the color in the center of your face and sweeping the excess up and out to your temples. For night, add the contouring bronzer shade underneath your cheekbones, along your temple and on your jawline. Top it off with the highlighting powder just above your eyebrows, along the bridge of your nose and a dab right above the center of your upper lip.

5. Bobbi Brown Long-Wear Gel Eyeliner in black: Don’t worry about having raccoon eyes before the sun goes down—this eyeliner will not budge. Trace your upper lashline for day and echo the bottom lashline for evening. 6. Estee Lauder Sumptuous Extreme Mascara: Voluminous lashes are a must no matter what time of day it is. Sweep mascara on the top lashes during the day. Add another coat to the top lashes and some on the bottom lashes for your night look. 7. Chanel Rouge Double Intensite Ultra Wear Lip Color: This lip stain will get you through dinner and cocktails without creeping outside your lip lines or transferring to your wine glass. Use the clear glossy side for day and incorporate the color side for night.

Wrinkles

MINIMIZE DARK CIRCLES & WRINKLES

The look of your skin is a direct reflection of how you care for it, so it’s important to moisturize with a heavy-duty antiwrinkle cream. The Ferulic & Retinol AntiAging Moisturizer by Dr. Dennis Gross visibly improves the look of fine lines and wrinkles. To make your jar of cream last, apply a dime-sized amount while your skin is still damp from cleansing so it will spread further while using less. Estee Lauder Perfectionist CP+R Line Smoother smooths fine lines and creases instantly. Think of it as gentle spackle for your face. Use a silicone-based face primer under your foundation so your makeup goes on evenly and smoothly. Try Smashbox Photo Finish Foundation Primer. Clinique Repairwear Laser Focus liquid foundation is emollient, offers ample coverage and even has some of Clinique’s wrinkle-repair serum in it. This foundation does more than just cover wrinkles—it corrects them! Use this powder rubdown trick with Laura Mercier Translucent Loose Setting Powder: Rub loose face powder between your fingers to warm it up, and then dab it into your skin only where you get oily. The skin-on-skin contact melts the powder into your face and steers you away from the dull, chalky look.

Dark Circles 1. Treat the under-eye area with Even Better Eyes Dark Circle Corrector by Clinique. This eye serum is clinically proven to lighten dark circles by 30 percent in 12 weeks—even hereditary ones. 2. Hydrate the eye area with a nourishing eye cream like Kiehl’s Creamy Eye Treatment with Avacado. Your eyes will look well rested and appreciate the drink of moisture. 3. Correct the discoloration under your eyes with a yellow- or peach-based concealer like Bobbi Brown’s Creamy Concealer Kit. This comes with a setting powder for the concealer so it won’t settle into the wrinkles under your eyes. 4. Avoid shimmer. Instead, highlight the orbital eye bone with Yves Saint Laurent’s Touche Eclat. It catches light, leaving you with glowing—not glittery—brightened eyes.
