PERFORMANCE NOTES ALL — V. m. 50 (2nd time): An opportunity to improvise — retain melody and chord progression, but feel free to add variation, backing countermelodies, or fills to your taste. SINGERS — All songs should be sung with a more pop/jazz vocal technique in relation to amount of vibrato, diction, sliding in and out of pitches, vocal timbre, etc. These should feel more like folk songs than arias, though in especially dramatic moments, a more operatic tone may emerge. Use your best judgment and err on the side of informal. STRINGS — I. m.12: Square note head refers to overpressure crunch; any sort of short, percussive crushed tone will do if you make a quick, dramatic crescendo into it. — I. m. 15: Half pressure refers to pressing down the string lightly so uncontrolled overtones pop out, with the addition of wide vibrato to create an eerie sound. — I. m. 108–118: When playing loudly in the ffp, play ordinario; when playing quietly, play molto sul ponticello (less fundamental will be present) and transition gradually between them during crescendos. VIOLIN — IV. m.47: Tap on instrument with fingertip(s) to make percussive sound (x note head). ii

Letters That You Will Not Get: Women’s Voices From the Great War sets a libretto by Susan Werbe and Kate Holland, featuring a collection of letters and poetry written by American, British, Irish, French, and German women during World War I. Nine songs offer a window into their experiences and thoughts during a conflict in which over 18 million people died and 23 million were wounded. It was commissioned to commemorate the 100th anniversary of Armistice Day. Let’s hope that will do some good and above all bring the end —
