WELCOME TO THE WORK OF THE TEXTILE DESIGNERS GRADUATING FROM FALMOUTH IN 2012.
Diverse, talented and ambitious, this year’s graduates are poised to enter the professional world. They have learned to negotiate the complexities and challenges of creating textiles, whether printed, woven, embroidered, or manipulated. They have successfully negotiated their own personal approach to the design process, finding individual ways to research, develop concepts and realise design ideas. They have a real understanding of the nature of textiles which comes from closely focusing on an area of textile production, whether a single specialism or in combination. Underpinned by research that might encompass contemporary design, or historical, theoretical, or commercial issues, and taking inspiration from almost anything - from fine art to science, politics to poetry – our graduates create well conceived, robustly designed textile collections, fabrics for fashion and interiors and textile artefacts. I’m impressed by the entrepreneurial spirit of our graduates. They have already confidently made connections in the industry, travelling both in the UK and abroad on placements and research missions, and in some cases designing directly for clients as part of the final year’s work. Their efforts at fund raising to support their final shows have been second to none, surpassing previous years in both the dynamism of their approach and the amounts they have raised. Their creativity and skill as designers is balanced by an understanding of the imperatives of the professional world and the confidence to deal with it. I wish them every success in their future careers.

As a confident handweaver I enjoy working with luxury natural fibres to create distinguishable designs full of my own concentrated weave structures. On a trip to Morocco I spent time weaving with the Berbers in the Anti Atlas Mountains, which was fascinating, and has influenced my recent designs.

Travelling is a recurring theme in my work, using my own photographs to inform my designs. Colour and pattern play a significant part, being inspired by nature and my surroundings. Blended colour and reflections are also key subjects that I am drawn to, aiming to find a balance between block colour and texture.

Using yarn to capture the essence of a theme is a rewarding part of the course. In the hands of the individual, Mixed media at University College Falmouth is broad and wide ranging. The initial focus is rooted in engaging the students with the rich and varied traditions of hand embroidery, machine stitch and fabric manipulation. Teaching them to respect, value and learn from aged old and global techniques not only keeps such a wealth of skill and knowledge alive but, mixing it with fresh thinking and modern technologies, moves it on a step into the future. Students’ curiosity into the discipline is encouraged; to question, investigate and explore through experimentation into process and materials, with originality, foresight and imagination. This, alongside the emphasis on a high level of technical acumen and creative response to personalise and contemporise the discipline, allows the students to find their own style and interpretation of mixed media, making it relevant to a modern audience. Professionally, the calibre and reputation of our mixed media students and graduates continues to attract national and international acclaim within the industry. We are proud of our regular competition wins in the Hand and Lock Prize for Embroidery, selection for Texprint , Madeira sponsorship and a wide variety of industry placements and graduate employment – Rebecca Taylor (New York), Nicolas Oakwell Couture, Phillipa Lepley Bridal Couture, Matthew Williamson, Jenny King Embroidery Design to name a few. This graduating year is no exception, once again offering an interesting, eclectic and at times eccentric mix of ideas and collections, all beautifully produced and with their own personal appeal. Whatever step they take next, be it further study, setting up their own businesses, gaining employment in the industry, taking up placements or travelling, they go on fully equipped with an enviable skill set and a life long passion.

Students who chose to study woven textiles at University College Falmouth understand that they are not only making fabric which is visually interesting, but creating something which has substance and is beautiful to hold and use and even be with. Weave students immerse themselves fully into a unique and innovative world of woven construction which embraces both the traditional techniques of making cloth and contemporary digital technologies. Our graduates are sought after for their range of skills and we have many weave graduates working in design studios all over the world. This year’s graduates are passionate about every aspect of woven textile design. They are good at what they do and are also importantly for me, diverse in their resulting portfolios of work. Printed Textiles at University College Falmouth emphasises the importance of individuality and originality while at the same time developing students with sound market awareness so they are prepared to operate as designers in a variety of situations in the UK or abroad. Focus is given to a number of core principles in printed textiles; imaginative conceptual starting points, the development of sound aesthetic principles and skills, an experimental design process and the acquisition of relevant technologies. Graduating students in printed textiles have gained a reputation for producing high quality and innovative design collections that has led to them gaining employment in many prestigious international design studios. The current graduating students in printed textiles reflect these preceding principles and ambitions and so it is envisaged they will also play an important role in contributing towards defining the vision for printed textiles in the future.
