Mission Statement museum DhondtDhaenens Le musée Dhondt-Dhaenens est une fondation privée reconnue par l’autorité flamande. Het museum Dhondt-Dhaenens is een private stichting erkend door de Vlaamse Overheid. Als museum ontsluit ze belangrijke moderne en hedendaagse privéverzamelingen met een maatschappelijke relevantie. Als hedendaags kunstencentrum wil ze een actieve rol spelen in het internationale kunstgebeuren.

The museum DhondtDhaenens is a private foundation recognised by the Flemish government. As a museum it makes publicly accessible important modern and contemporary private collections with a social relevance. As a contemporary art centre it aims to play an active role in the international art field.

Winter Harvest wordt een groepstentoonstelling waarvoor we vier jonge kunstenaars uit binnenen buitenland samenbrengen voor wie muziek, subcultuur en performances belangrijke inspiratiebronnen vormen. Vertrekkend vanuit hun persoonlijke fascinatie met welbepaalde culturele verschijnselen en alledaagse codes, gaan de kunstenaars zowel met elkaar in dialoog als met de tentoonstellingsruimte. Ondanks de diversiteit van hun beeldtaal, roepen deze intuïtieve werken associaties op met noties als vrijheid, vlucht en erotiek. Winter Harvest doet in de eerste plaats beroep op de zintuigen van de toeschouwer, waarbij immateriële vormen zoals licht, geluid en beweging primeren. Deze “vibrerende” ruimte zal aangevuld worden met een reeks nieuwe performances van de kunstenaars.

FR Winter Harvest est une exposition collective qui rassemble quatre jeunes artistes, belges et étrangers, dont les principales sources d’inspiration sont la musique, la contre-culture et les performances. Au départ de leur fascination personnelle pour des phénomènes culturels définis et de codes quotidiens, les artistes engagent le dialogue les uns avec les autres, mais aussi avec l’espace d’exposition. Malgré la diversité de leur langage visuel, ces travaux intuitifs évoquent des associations avec des notions telles que la liberté, la fuite et l’érotisme. Winter Harvest met, avant tout, les sens du spectateur en éveil en accordant une attention particulière aux formes immatérielles telles que la lumière, le bruit et le mouvement. Cet espace « vibrant » sera prochainement occupé par une série de nouvelles performances réalisées par les artistes.

EN Winter Harvest is a group exhibition bringing together four young artists from Belgium and abroad for whom music, subculture and performances are important sources of inspiration. Originating in their personal fascination with certain cultural phenomena and everyday codes, the artists enter in dialogue with each other but also with the exhibition space. Despite the diversity of their visual language, these intuitive works inspire associations with notions of freedom, escape and eroticism. Winter Harvest appeals first of all to the senses of the viewer, where immaterial forms such as light, sound and movement prevail. These artists will complement this “vibrating” space with a series of new performances.

De diverse praktijk van Kamrooz Aram (Â°1978, Iran) behandelt vaak de gecompliceerde relatie tussen de traditionele niet-westerse kunst en het westers modernisme. Door het gebruik van een verscheidenheid van media, waaronder schilderkunst, collage, tekening en installatie, heeft Aram het potentieel voor beeldvorming gevonden dat kritisch functioneert als middel voor een welbepaalde heronderhandeling van de geschiedenis. Aram maakt de relatie tussen ornament en decoratie ingewikkeld, hij openbaart de geschiedenis van het ornament als een impuls naar afwezigheid van figuratie, op zoek naar abstractie.

Kamrooz Aram

FR La pratique très hétérogène de Kamrooz Aram (°1978, Iran) aborde souvent la relation complexe entre l’art traditionnel non occidental et le modernisme occidental. En utilisant différents types de supports, dont la peinture, le collage, le dessin et l’installation, Aram a trouvé un potentiel de création qui se prête de manière critique à une redéfinition bien précise de l’histoire. Aram complexifie la relation entre l’ornement et la décoration. Il révèle l’histoire de l’ornement comme une impulsion vers l’absence de figuration, en quête d’abstraction.

EN The varied oeuvre of Kamrooz Aram (B. 1978, Iran) often deals with the complex relationship between traditional non-Western art and Western modernism. Through the use of a variety of media, including painting, collage, drawing and installation, Aram has found the potential for imaging that functions critically as a means to re-negotiate history. Aram complicates the relationship between ornament and decoration, he reveals the history of the ornament as an impulse towards the absence of figuration, in search for abstraction.

De Britse kunstenaar Karla Black (°1972, Schotland) realiseert abstracte sculpturen die bestaan uit gips, pigmenten en papier die ze op de grond legt of aan het plafond ophangt om zo fragiele maar ook sensuele ruimtelijke belevingen te creëren. Ze heeft een voorkeur voor poeders, smeersels, oliën, crèmes en gels. De kunstenares gebruikt deze materialen in een onbewerkte vorm om hun potentieel van leven en energie te vertragen. Black geeft prioriteit aan een materiële ervaring boven taal, als een manier om te leren over de wereld en deze te begrijpen. Voor MDD zal Karla Black nieuwe werken maken voor de gehele museumruimte, waardoor ze het intense lichtspel in de ruimte optimaal zal kunnen benutten.

Karla Black

FR L’artiste britannique Karla Black (1972, Écosse) crée des sculptures abstraites, faites de plâtre, de pigments et de papier, qu’elle pose sur le sol ou suspend au plafond afin de créer des expériences aussi fragiles que sensuelles et spatiales. Friande de poudres, de colles, d’huiles, de crèmes et de gels, Karla Black utilise ces matériaux à l’état brut pour temporiser le potentiel de vie et d’énergie qu’ils recèlent. Elle privilégie l’expérience matérielle au langage comme moyen de découvrir et de comprendre le monde. Pour le MDD, Karla Black créera de nouvelles œuvres impliquant l’ensemble de l’espace du musée, ce qui lui permettra d’exploiter le jeu de lumière intense de l’espace d’exposition.

EN British artist Karla Black (B. 1972, Scotland) creates abstract sculptures, consisting of plaster, pigments and paper that she lays on the floor or hangs from the ceiling to create fragile but also sensual spatial experiences. She loves powders, pastes, oils, creams and gels, and she uses these in their raw state to try to retard the potential of life and energy within them. Black prioritizes material experience over language, as a way to learn about and understand the world. For MDD, Karla Black will create new works involving the whole museum area, allowing her to leverage the intense play of light in the exhibition space.

Walther Vanbeselaere, Verzamelaar voor de staat 1948 - 1973

In de reeks collectieontsluitingen en -tentoonstellingen presenteert het MDD in 2017 de moderne kunstcollectie van het Koninklijk Museum voor Schone Kunsten Antwerpen (KMSKA) samengebracht door hoofdconservator Walther Vanbeselaere tussen 1948 en 1973. Zijn ideeĂŤn over de moderne Vlaamse kunst waren zeer invloedrijk en bepaalden voor een groot deel de kunstgeschiedschrijving in BelgiĂŤ in de 20ste eeuw. Ook op de vorming van de verzameling DhondtDhaenens had Vanbeselaere een zeer grote invloed. Er kunnen dan ook heel veel parallellen getrokken worden tussen beide collecties. Deze tentoonstelling wordt georganiseerd in samenwerking met het KMSKA en zal werk tonen van onder meer Henri De Braekeleer, James Ensor, Rik Wouters, Jakob Smits, Constant Permeke, Gust De Smet en Jean Brusselmans.

Walther Vanbeselaere, Collectionneur pour l’État 1948 - 1973 Dans la série de présentations de collections importantes le MDD présentera en 2017 la collection d’art moderne du Musée Royal des Beaux-Arts Anvers (KMSKA), rassemblée entre 1948 et 1973 par le conservateur en chef Walther Vanbeselaere. Les idées que ce dernier se faisait de l’art moderne flamand ont été très influentes et ont en grande partie déterminé l’histoire de l’art en Belgique au XXe siècle. Walther Vanbeselaere a également eu une influence considérable sur la constitution de la collection DhondtDhaenens. Il est dès lors possible de tracer de nombreux parallèles entre les deux collections. Cette exposition est organisée en collaboration avec le Musée Royal des Beaux-Arts d’Anvers et présentera entre autres certaines œuvres d’Henri De Braekeleer, James Ensor, Rik Wouters, Jakob Smits, Constant Permeke, Gust De Smet et Jean Brusselmans.

Walther Vanbeselaere, Collector for the state 1948 - 1973 Within the series of important collection presentations, MDD presents in 2017 the modern art collection of the Royal Museum of Fine Arts Antwerp (KMSKA) which was put together by chief curator Walther Vanbeselaere between 1948 and 1973. His ideas on modern Flemish art were highly influential and determined fundamentally the writing of art history in Belgium throughout the 20th century. Vanbeselaere also had a major impact on the collection Dhondt-Dhaenens. Consequently, many parallels can be drawn between the two collections. This exhibition is organized in cooperation with the KMSKA and will amongst others show work of Henri De Braekeleer, James Ensor, Rik Wouters, Jakob Smits, Constant Permeke, Gust De Smet and Jean Brusselmans.

Het MDD heeft reeds een lange traditie met de kunstenaar Thomas Lerooy (°1981, België). Samen met de kunstenaar produceerde MDD in 2006 een van zijn eerste bronzen sculptuurprojecten. Sindsdien heeft Thomas Lerooy een groot traject afgelegd met tentoonstellingen in heel Europa. Het MDD werkt al meerdere jaren samen met de kunstenaar om een nieuw groot museumproject te realiseren. Het werk van Lerooy verhoudt zich heel sterk tegenover de klassieke beeldhouwkunst, onder meer door een doorgedreven technische perfectie en monumentale présence, terwijl hij tegelijk verwijst naar verval en regeneratie.

Thomas Lerooy

FR Le MDD a déjà une longue histoire commune avec Thomas Lerooy (1981, Belgique). Avec l’artiste, le musée a produit en 2006 l’un de ses premiers projets de sculpture en bronze. Thomas Lerooy a, depuis lors, parcouru un long chemin et exposé en différents lieux d’Europe. Le MDD collabore avec cet artiste depuis plusieurs années pour mettre en œuvre un nouveau projet de grande ampleur pour le musée. L’œuvre de Thomas Lerooy est intimement liée à l’art sculptural classique, entre autres par la perfection technique poussée et la présence monumentale de ses sculptures, tout en faisant à la fois référence au déclin et à la régénération.

EN MDD has a long history with artist Thomas Lerooy (B. 1981, Belgium). In 2006 MDD collaborated with the artist on one of his first bronze sculpture projects. Since then Thomas Lerooy has had a range of exhibitions throughout Europe. The museum has been working with the artist for several years to create a major new museum project. The work of Lerooy relates strongly to classical sculpture through the thorough technical perfection and monumental presence whilst at the same time referring to decay and regeneration.

Maki Na Kamura

Stenen leggen, appels lezen Het werk van Maki Na Kamura (Japan, leeft en werkt in Duitsland) is duidelijk van de 21ste eeuw, maar de manier waarop ze horizonnen gebruikt kan verwijzen naar een vijf eeuwen oude schilderkunsttraditie. Ze stelt dat de horizon uitgevonden werd door schilders, aangezien de horizon in de natuur niet bestaat als een fysieke lijn of zone. Terwijl veel realistische landschappen vaak een statische indruk geven door het gebruik van horizontale lijnen, vermenigvuldigt en onderbreekt Maki de horizon. Hoewel ze verschillende technieken en voorstellingsvormen hanteert die een klassieke picturale ruimte suggereren, zijn deze landschappen niet helder geformuleerd: Maki Na Kamura gaat vrij om met abstractie en figuratie en creĂŤert een spanning tussen deze twee concepten waarmee ze schilderkunst naar een nieuwe en bijzondere dimensie leidt. Deze tentoonstelling wordt gerealiseerd in co-productie met het Osthaus Museum Hagen.

Poser des pierres, glaner des pommes L’œuvre de Maki Na Kamura (Japon, vit et travaille en Allemagne) s’inscrit résolument dans le XXIe siècle, mais la façon dont elle utilise les horizons peut faire penser à une tradition vieille de 5 siècles dans la peinture. Elle avance que « les horizons ont été inventés par les peintres », puisque l’horizon n’existe pas en tant que ligne ou zone physique dans la nature. Tandis que la plupart des paysages réalistes donnent souvent une impression statique par l’utilisation de lignes horizontales, Maki Na Kamura multiplie et entrecoupe l’horizon. Bien qu’elle adopte différentes techniques et formes de représentation qui suggèrent un espace pictural classique, les paysages qu’elle représente ne sont pas clairement formulés : Maki Na Kamura passe de l’abstraction à la figuration et crée une zone de tension entre ces deux concepts grâce à laquelle elle apporte une dimension nouvelle et particulière à l’art pictural. L’exposition est coproduite par le Musée Osthaus Hagen.

Placing stones, gleaning apples The work of Maki Na Kamura (Japan, lives and works in Germany) is clearly of the 21st century, but the way she uses horizons may refer to a five centuries old tradition of painting. She argues that «the horizon was invented by painters» because the horizon in nature as a physical line or area does not exist. While many realistic landscapes often give a static impression through the use of horizontal lines, Maki multiplies and interrupts the horizon. Although she applies various techniques and forms of representation suggesting a classical pictorial space, these landscapes are not clearly defined: Maki Na Kamura plays freely with abstraction and figuration, creating a tension between these two concepts giving painting a new and peculiar dimension. The exhibition is realized in coproduction with the Osthaus Museum Hagen.

NL In de zomer toveren we het museum Dhondt-Dhaenens twee weken om tot een heerlijke kampplaats voor kinderen waar kunst in alle aspecten aan bod komt met een vleugje avontuur en vooral een grote dosis plezier (en waarom niet veel zon) ...

FR L’été venu, pendant deux semaines, nous transformons le musée DhondtDhaenens en un camp pour les enfants où s’invitent l’art sous toutes ses facettes, un soupçon d’aventure et, surtout, une bonne dose de plaisir (peut-être même de soleil)...

EN During two weeks in summer we transform the museum DhondtDhaenens into a great camping venue for children where there is space for art in all its aspects, for a little adventure and most of all for a lot of fun (and hopefully also a lot sun) ...

Residenties RĂŠsidences Residences

NL Woning Van Wassenhove is een ontwerp van architect Juliaan Lampens in opdracht van Albert Van Wassenhove, die er van 1974 tot zijn overlijden in 2012 woonde. Albert Van Wassenhove legateerde het gebouw aan de Universiteit Gent die het op zijn beurt in langdurig beheer gaf aan het museum Dhondt-Dhaenens. De restauratie van de woning in 2015 werd mogelijk gemaakt dankzij de steun van Philippe en Miene Gillion. In 2017 verwelkomen we een vijftal residenten in de woning, waaronder kunstenaars Ana PrvaÄ?ki en Friederike von Rauch en psychiater Mathieu Vanfleteren. Vanaf 21 maart 2017 is het ook weer mogelijk om via Airbnb een kort verblijf in de woning te boeken in de periode van mei tot en met september. VillaDD/, gelegen langs de Leie vlakbij het museum, wordt in 2017 verder verbouwd tot een indrukwekkend werk van kunstenaar Hans Op de Beeck. Het zal de bibliotheek van Jan Hoet herbergen en tevens plaats bieden aan een resident. De residentieplaatsen zijn een bijzondere reflectieplek om in alle rust en isolement een bepaald project te conceptualiseren, te realiseren, uit te werken of te onderzoeken.

FR La Maison Van Wassenhove a été conçue par l’architecte Juliaan Lampens, à la demande d’Albert Van Wassenhove, qui y a vécu de 1974 à sa mort, en 2012. Albert Van Wassenhove a légué la bâtisse à l’université de Gand, qui en a, à son tour, confié la gestion à long terme au musée Dhondt-Dhaenens. La maison a été restaurée en 2015 grâce au soutien de Philippe et Miene Gillion. Cinq résidents s’installeront dans la Maison Van Wassenhove en 2017, notamment les artistes Ana Prvački et Friederike von Rauch et le psychiatre Mathieu Vanfleteren. Dès le 21 mars, 2017 il sera également possible de réserver, via Airbnb, un séjour de courte durée dans la Maison Van Wassenhove, entre mai et septembre inclus. Située juste à côté du musée en bordure de la Lys, la VillaDD/ fera l’objet, en 2017, d’une impressionnante transformation prise en main par l’artiste Hans Op de Beeck. Elle abritera la bibliothèque de Jan Hoet et pourra accueillir un résident. Les deux résidences offrent un formidable lieu de réflexion pour conceptualiser, réaliser, élaborer où examiner un projet au calme et à l’écart.

EN The House Van Wassenhove was designed by architect Juliaan Lampens and originally commissioned by Albert Van Wassenhove, who lived in it from 1974 until his death in 2012. Albert Van Wassenhove bequeathed the building to the University of Ghent, which in turn gave the long-term management to the museum Dhondt-Dhaenens. The restoration of the house in 2015 was made possible thanks to the support of Philippe and Miene Gillion. In 2017 we will welcome five residents, including artists Ana Prvački and Friederike von Rauch and psychiatrist Mathieu Vanfleteren. As of March 21, 2017 booking a short stay will once again be possible through Airbnb for the period of May to September 2017. NL Als Vriend van het museum ondersteun je mee de projecten van de kunstenaars die bij ons resideren en tentoonstellen! In het najaar van 2015 startte het museum DhondtDhaenens een residentieprogramma in Woning Van Wassenhove. Regelmatig zullen kunstenaars en onderzoekers in de Leiestreek verblijven en op het einde van hun residentie een lezing of toonmoment organiseren. Als Vriend bent u onze bevoorrechte gast tijdens deze huiselijke ontmoetingen in Woning Van Wassenhove â&#x20AC;&#x201D; en vanaf 2017 ook in VillaDD/. Elk jaar staat bovendien een jonge kunstenaar centraal die we met de Vrienden leren kennen aan de hand van een atelierbezoek, tentoonstelling of lezing. Deze kunstenaar krijgt ook de opdracht om een Vriendeneditie te creĂŤren, een kunstwerk op 300 exemplaren, exclusief en gratis voor de Vrienden. Tenslotte geniet je als Vriend ook nog van talrijke andere voordelen, zoals gratis toegang tot het museum, kortingen op lezingen, een Vrienden rondleiding voor de opening van elke tentoonstelling en postuitnodigingen.

En tant qu’Ami du musée, vous soutenez les projets des artistes qui résident et exposent chez nous! À l’automne 2015, le musée DhondtDhaenens a lancé un programme de résidence à la Maison Van Wassenhove. Des artistes et des chercheurs résideront régulièrement dans le Pays de la Lys et organiseront une conférence ou une exposition àla fin de leur séjour. En tant qu’Ami, vous ferez parti de nos invités privilégiés lors de ces rencontres qui se tiendront dans l’ambiance intimiste de la Maison Van Wassenhove (et à la VillaDD/ à partir de 2017). Un jeune artiste sera, en outre, mis à l’honneur chaque année. Nous apprendrons à le connaître, avec les Amis, dans le cadre d’une visite d’atelier, d’une exposition ou d’une conférence. Cet artiste aura également pour mission de créer une édition des Amis : une œuvre d’art tirée à 300 exemplaires et offerte gratuitement – et uniquement – aux Amis. Enfin, votre statut d’Ami vous donne droit à une foule d’autres avantages, notamment l’accès gratuit au musée, des réductions sur les conférences, une visite guidée avant l’inauguration de chaque exposition et des invitations par courrier.

As Friend you also support the exhibition and residence program of the museum. In the autumn of 2015, the museum Dhondt-Dhaenens started a residency programme in the House Van Wassenhove. Artists and researchers will be regularly invited to stay in the Lys region and will organize a lecture or presentation moment at the end of their residency. As a Friend, you will be our privileged guest at these meetings in the congenial atmosphere of the House Van Wassenhove (and from 2017 in VillaDD/). Every year, we will turn the focus on a young artist we meet together with the Friends on the occasion of a studio visit, an exhibition or a lecture. This artist will also be commissioned to create a Friends Edition, a work in an edition of 300 copies, exclusive and free for all Friends. Finally, as a Friend you enjoy numerous other benefits such as free admission to the museum, discounts on lectures, a Friends Tour before the opening of each exhibition and mail invitations.

JongDD/ ClubDD/ Patroons

NL JongDD/ richt zich tot jonge mensen met een ontluikende interesse voor internationale hedendaagse kunst. Elk jaar is er een programma met een aantal artistieke activiteiten, waaronder een meerdaagse buitenlandse uitstap, nocturnes in het museum en daguitstappen met tentoonstellings-, atelier- en collectiebezoeken. ClubDD/ brengt een groep kunstliefhebbers samen die elkaar graag ontmoeten in het aangename kader vanhet museum of op ĂŠĂŠn van de vele uitstappen in binnenen buitenland. De begeleiding wordt steeds verzorgd door directeur Joost Declercq. De Patroons zijn een groep kunstliefhebbers en verzamelaars die het museum actief ondersteunen, maandelijks samenkomen om te discussiĂŤren over recente tentoonstellingen, verzamelen en ontwikkelingen in de kunstwereld.

JeuneDD/ s’adresse aux jeunes qui démontrent un intérêt naissant pour l’art contemporain international. Chaque année, le programme comprend diverses activités artistiques, dont un voyage de plusieurs jours à l’étranger, des nocturnes au musée et des excursions incluant la visite d’expositions, d’ateliers et de collections. ClubDD/ rassemble un groupe d’amateurs d’art qui aiment se retrouver dans le décor agréable du musée ou lors de l’une des nombreuses excursions organisées en Belgique et à l’étranger. L’animation est toujours assurée par le directeur Joost Declercq. Les Patrons sont un groupe d’amateurs d’art et de collectionneurs qui soutiennent activement le musée et se réunissent tous les mois pour parler des expositions récentes, des collections et des évolutions dans le monde de l’art.

YoungDD/ is aimed at young people with a burgeoning interest in international contemporary art. Every year there is a programme with a number of artistic activities, including a multi-day trip abroad, nocturnes in the museum and day trips visiting exhibitions, artists’ studios and private collections. ClubDD/ brings together a group of art lovers who like to meet in the pleasant environment of the museum or during one of the many trips in Belgium or abroad. Director Joost Declercq does the guided art tours. The Patrons are a group of art lovers and collectors who actively support the museum and meet regularly to discuss recent exhibitions, topics on collecting art and new developments in the art world.
