Welcome to our Te Kuiti Sale 2022.
We are a family based farming operation situated south west of Taumarunui in the King Country. We have a steep hill country farm of 333 ha in a sheltered valley just off the Whanganui river at Kirikau.
Our Coopworth recorded flock has been an integral part of our farming system since 1974 when started by Robert & Suzanne, with emphasis on being able to handle the constant challenges encountered on a steep hill country block.
We have a strong low input animal health strategy where we use genetics to help solve issues. Due to our location, FE is a significant constraint which prompted us to start FE testing. We have now been FE Gold for 9 years and slowly have been increasing our dosing rate to 0.63mg/kg. This has been in conjunction with an emphasis on reproduction, improving growth and meat yield. Significant focus has been towards external and internal parasites, enabling us to not drench any ewes for 20 years, or dip any sheep on the property for 5 years now.
For the future, our goal is to maintain the current traits of the flock while further improving worm resilience, growth and meat yield. Improving these traits have only been made possible by the cooperative culture of Coopworth Genetics.
In order to help future proof our industry, for the past 2 years we have also been collecting individual data on tail length/bareness. We feel tailing may become regulated in the future and want to make a head start. As well, methane testing has been undertaken with the AgResearch PAC trailer on all hoggets.
Overall our key strategy has been to produce a low-input, high-output flock that is able to thrive within the natural challenges of the environment.

INDEX DESCRIPTION
New Zealand Maternal Worth + Meat
DP Capped Reproduction
NZMW+M An industry standard index for dual purpose sheep based on Reproduction, Lamb Survival, Lamb Growth + Adult Size, Wool Production + Meat
DPCR The economic value of more lambs per litter, per year, for 2-tooth and older ewes. Caped at optimum value at 2.13 lambs/ewe
DP Lamb Survival
DP Lamb Growth
DPS A function of 2 BVs (breeding values) - lamb vigour & ewe mothering ability
DPG A function of 3 BVs - pre-weaning growth, ewe milking ability & carcass weight
DP Adult Size DPA A function of the adult ewe live weight BV
DP Meat (Yield)
DPM A function of carcass lean yields in 3 carcass regions - shoulder, loin & hindquarter. Yields are deviation for kg of tissue at a standard carcass weight (18kg)
DP Wool Production
DPW A function of fleece weight BVs
DP Facial Eczema Tolerance DPX A rating of an animal’s ability to tolerate an FE challenge, based on the RamGuard system. The level of challenge can differ between farms so this index is most accurate for comparisons within farm & birth year
DP Internal Parasite Resistance
DPF Predicted from faecal egg counts (FEC) using the Worm FEC system. Based on 3 BVs - FEC 1 & FEC 2 for lambs & A FEC for ewes
Please note, SIL no longer includes DPW (wool) as part of the MW+M calculation. DPF and DPX are additional traits as per standard.
