Client Relations Award

Newcrest Cadia Expansion Project team | The AUA region has serviced Newcrest as a key Metals client for several years now. The year 2020 was a landmark year in our journey to support Newcrest with their critical goal to produce more gold at the Cadia Valley Operations (CVO). This work will continue in 2021 and will form the backbone of Metals workload in AUA. Our Minerals Processing team was involved in helping Newcrest to identify ways to increase throughput.

7 Canadian Nuclear Laboratories (CNL) - Biological Research Facility (BRF) revitalization | WCA CNL has a mandate for site revitalization and as a part of this mandate the Biological Research Facility is in need of urgent attention.

CNL needed the design deliverables to be completed in under 90 days.

It was very difficult to organize this multidisciplinary project given the current global pandemic, tight timelines, and numerous client stakeholders. Continuous improvement, stakeholder engagement, constant feedback, and the management of expectations were key to the successful completion of

this engagement. A series of Microsoft Teams virtual workshops were organized with the client to facilitate design input. Internally, workshops were organized to allow for internal review and design review workshops were organized in order to expedite the comment review cycle.

The client stated that the project team exceeded expectations and that they were amazed with the amount of high-quality engineering deliverables completed in a very short period of time.

9 APM Terminals Project M |

USA

APM Terminals Pier 400 Los Angeles is the largest privately-operated container terminal in North America. Project M is a pilot project to modernize part of the busy existing container terminal by implementing automated straddle carriers which move containers between the ship-to-shore cranes, the yard, and truck exchange lanes.

Project M was well underway when the client approached Hatch and engaged us to carry out a scoping study, led by Sylvia Wong and supported

by Claire Wheeler, for an initial period of six weeks in September 2019. The client recognized the need to engage a consultant who understood the complexities of integrating automated straddle carriers into a terminal operation.

The Hatch team’s understanding of the practical nature of container terminal automation is well recognized. With credit to our sharing of insights, the client awarded us two additional scopes of work that truly allow us to shine—in particular, the PI Proof of Concept has impressed the client not only at the project level, but at the program level as well. We were able to provide visibility and insight into their equipment and processes within days.

This is the first time on this type of project that I have had a consultant team that allows me to validate and challenge myself. We are all able to share our opinions openly and get the best outcome!

Construction Management Award

Wet Concentrator Plant B Relocation to Pilivili project | AEM The WCP-B to Pilivili team managed to lead the project and construction contractors to successfully execute this project in Mozambiuqe under very challenging conditions during the COVID-19 pandemic. This is a fairly unique scope in that it includes civil infrastructure (roads, earthworks, terrace), Structural Mechanical Platework and Piping (SMPP)— including a water pipeline and a product pipeline—E&I installation, including a Statcom and a 110kV overhead powerline, and also the logistics of moving a works barge, a mining dredge (1,700 tons) and a wet concentrator (7,000 tons) 23 kilometres to a new mining location.

The project team managed to deliver the project despite the lockdown and subsequent impacts on the construction site in March 2020.

As the national lockdown came into effect in South Africa and Mozambique, the team— in collaboration with client stakeholders—applied for an essential works project classification permit to allow fabrication and deliveries to site to continue. COVID-19 related procedures and response plans were developed in parallel to oblige with the Department of Labor and client regulations.

The team continued to work onsite throughout the lockdown, safeguarding the people on-site while maintaining a positive construction rate. The Health and Safety systems and approach on the project is a hybrid of Hatch and client systems.

The project team took ownership and led the effort to achieve no harm right from the start of the project.

11 Design Excellence Award

Cross River Rail project | Hatch’s Rail Civil & Perway and Structures team is doing workshare designs from South Africa on the Cross River Rail project in Brisbane. Cross River Rail is a 10.2-kilometre rail line between Dutton Park and Bowen Hills, which includes a 5.9-kilometre twin tunnel under the Brisbane River and Brisbane central business district. The project also includes construction of four new highcapacity underground stations.

The 3D design developed for the Cross River Rail project can be used as a key differentiation for the AEM region and this knowledge can be applied on future

AEM freight and transit rail projects as well as road projects in this region and globally.

A great advantage of utilizing Civil 3D design functionality is the automated cross section generation that will take out design team much less time to generate the 3D drawings. This design skills that were developed during the project is definitely a huge advantage for the AEM team and will set a new standard for projects going forward. The visual impact of the 3D models is also a very powerful tool in design reviews and these models can also be utilized in tender submissions as a key differentiation.

In the spirit of our Manifesto, the team illustrated how various skill types from different BUs and practices can work together to create magic with 3D rail and structural designs that are a ground-breaking achievement for the rail BU in the AEM region.

Innovation Award

Cerro Matoso's Dust Insufflation project | The Dust Insufflation project was developed between Mississauga and Medellín to support Cerro Matoso’s goal of trying to reduce both operating cost and GHG emissions.

This project evolved from feasibility study to detailed engineering. For this project, the team developed, studied, and designed a novel method for dust recycling for Cerro Matoso’s RKEF plant. Dust is typically recycled in a Rotary Kiln – Electric Furnace (RKEF) plant through the addition of water and feeding to the dryer or kilns. This process results in a large recirculation load and energy consumption.

An alternative method used in the cement industry and trialed by another producer involved the injection of dust through the burner.

There has been limited adoption of this method in the nickel industry.

SAM

Through careful selection of the equipment and vendors, process modeling, and careful engineering for this brownfield setting, the project team managed to complete the basic and detailed engineering phase, which allowed for a successful execution, commissioning, and ramp-up.

The new systems have been commissioned, and the systems are being fine-tuned, with the results from the initial first phase indicating positive results with respect to recovery of dust, which then lead to reduced energy consumption.

The project also allowed great collaboration between Medellín and Mississauga.

The ability to have the local Medellín office leading the detailed engineering was a key factor. The technical support from the Mississauga office also allowed for the right interface with international vendors.

Proper communication between the client project team, the client commissioning team, and Hatch was also a key factor of success.

Hatch Digital Crossing Compliance Data Management team | WCA Hatch Digital’s Crossing Compliance Data Management team have developed a suite of web applications for Canadian Pacific (CP) to provide a more efficient, robust, and integrated way of managing compliance at all of their 7,500-plus road crossings in Canada. The team is helping CP

provide a pathway to achieving Canada-wide compliance to new safety regulations set forth by Transport Canada. Both applications help manage an estimated C$240 million worth of capital improvements across all required railway grade crossings.

Blast Furnace Ironmaking | Written by Ian Cameron, Mitren Sukham, Kyle Lefebvre, and Professor William (Bill) Davenport, Blast Furnace Ironmaking; Analysis, Control, and Optimization uses a fundamental first principles approach to prepare a blast furnace mass and energy balance in Microsoft Excel. It includes practical information and engineering fundamentals that allow for more comprehensive assessments than the rule of thumb: currently used by the

industry. This book takes a complex system and breaks it down into its constituents, effectively presenting the model from its roots and teaching people how to build similar models.

The first of its kind, Blast Furnace Ironmaking; Analysis, Control, and Optimization unpacks a fundamental understanding of how to prepare a blast furnace model that will be used to teach other engineers about this complex metallurgical process.

This book consolidates years of data, spreadsheets, and other knowledge of the blast furnace ironmaking process into a concise product which will be referenced by the industry for years to come.

Pierre Girard |

ECA

Pierre's mentorship has had a significant and lasting influence on many employees at Hatch, including several leaders of the business. He has transmitted to everyone the core values that make Hatch unique before they were even articulated in the Manifesto.

Pierre has had and continues to have a lasting influence on my career. Technically, he taught me engineering and project management skills. Without these skills, I am certain that I would not be the same engineer and manager that I am today. But that portion was the easy part. True mentors don’t just distinguish themselves with how they transfer their technical or management skills.

True mentors are the ones that you turn to when the going gets tough, to get advice and guidance on how you should behave. This is where Pierre’s influence was the most significant for me: he taught me the Hatch culture. Pierre has been living the Manifesto for as long as I have known him and has taken the time to teach those behaviors to everyone around him.

17 Operational Excellence

North West Redwater Partnership (NWRP) Sturgeon Refinery: Gasifier Burner Development | WCA As part of the task team convened by North West Redwater Partnership, the Hatch team contributed to the development of an alternative design philosophy, developed concepts, and tested multiple design sensitivities across a range of process and mechanical design parameters to resolve the non-performance of NWRP’s licensed OEM gasifier burner design. The resulting new burner design was conceived, detailed, and fabricated within a 12-week period, from concept development to first installation. The new design significantly extended the burner life with improved process performance and operability.

The team’s efforts have resulted in the avoidance of significant operational losses and have directly enabled sustained production from the first greenfield oil refinery in North America in over 40 years. The outcomes also directly contributed to the largest project in the world for the utilization of man-made CO2 achieving beneficial operation.

The work was conducted with no safety incidents and in compliance with all risk assessments and refinery management of change procedures.

The homework done by the Hatch team ensured that the modified designs passed Alberta Boilers Safety Association (ABSA) evaluation on first submission, thereby assuring safety and preventing schedule delays.

This outcome would not have been possible without world-class technical skills and innovation, acting like owners, and combining diverse skill sets across the Hatch universe to solve a truly unique ‘tough challenge’.

Project Excellence Award

Polokwane SO2 Abatement project | The proclamation of air emission standards by the South African government necessitated the installation of an SO2 abatement facility at Polokwane smelter to treat furnace off-gas. This project allows Anglo American Platinum (AAP) to continue operating the largest primary Platinum Group Metals (PGM) furnace in the world.

Hatch has been involved on this project from the outset, starting with the scoping study in 2010 and appointed in 2018 as the EPCM provider for the construction and commissioning that was completed

by March 2021, with the plant successfully treating full furnace gas flow since April 2021. The project was on budget, with a capital value of ZAR 1.576 billion, the schedule stretched over a three-year execution period through the global COVID-19 pandemic, the project created around 600 construction jobs in the local community, and it provided contract work for 14 South African companies.

AEM

The Polokwane project’s success has led to AAP single sourcing Hatch to implement a similar project at a sister smelter, Mortimer. This project is currently in a parallel feasibility study and FEED phase and expected to go into full execution by October 2021.

The application of the specific SO2 abatement technology and flowsheet is the first for the PGM industry and only the second Wet gas Sulphuric Acid (WSA) plant in Africa (WSA is licensed by Haldor Topsøe). In addition to implementing a novel process technology, the supporting plant areas included several custom engineering designs by Hatch.

The successful implementation of an abatement solution at the Polokwane smelter will clearly demonstrate that the emission standards for SO2 set by the South African Department of Environmental Affair’s Air Quality Act of 2004 are attainable in large-scale industrial applications – setting a benchmark for the mining industry and beyond.

19 Sustainability Award

Vale Base Metals GHG emissions reduction team | WCA Hatch was sole-sourced to develop a greenhouse gas emissions (GHG) reduction roadmap and continuous improvement process to support Vale Base Metals' in their transition to a low carbon future. Hatch's extensive knowledge of Vale’s processes and operations, coupled with a track record of delivery excellence, enabled the project team to become a trusted advisor to the client team responsible for advancing Vale’s climate agenda.

The project will set Vale on a pathway to meeting their commitments of reducing scope 1 and 2 emissions by 33 percent by 2030 and achieving carbon neutrality by mid-century. By clearly and consistently communicating organizational objectives, the Hatch team established a deep level of trust with the client team resulting in engagement at all levels of Vale’s organization; a necessary requirement for implementation of abatement opportunities.

The Hatch project team was a multidisciplinary group from climate change, technologies, pyrometallurgy, thermal, advisory, and mining. This cross-sectoral expertise was essential to tackling the project scope, which included over 20 mines, mills, process plants, refineries, and smelters. A key success factor for this project was the ability to engage with Hatch SMEs and Vale stakeholders through a series of virtual workshops to identify and validate GHG emissions reduction opportunities.

Teambuilding Award

Vale Tailings Management System (TMS) program | WCA + SAM The Vale TMS program truly exemplifies our Manifesto: we partnered and worked together with our client and co-located in our Belo Horizonte office to redefine tailings management at Vale.

We committed to an aggressive schedule of 16 weeks to deliver the design of a holistic and integrated TMS including its technical, digital, and organizational dimensions, conduct a gap assessment, and develop an implementation roadmap, which was delivered on time and under budget, resulting in a subsequent implementation phase currently ongoing.

This outcome was achieved through teamwork, flexibility to deal with an obscure and complex situation at Vale following the Brumadinho dam collapse, and significant time spent with the client by the leadership team.

21 K3 Project - South Shaft Headframe Slipform Operation | WCA The South Shaft Headframe project is a sub-project of the overall K3 Mine Site Project for Mosaic, a US$3.2 billion greenfield potash mine development.

Due to the nature of concrete work, it was critical that this work occur this year, otherwise the project would have experienced significant delays and would likely have resulted in loss of a year in schedule, demobilization of staff, and increased project costs. The team, lead by Chris Congram, did well to keep the US-based Slipform Contractor engaged, despite them declaring force majeure in April and having international mobilization issues during the height of the global pandemic. Doing their homework, the team engaged the knowledge and experience of Hatch subject matter experts external to the project to assist with planning and constructability expertise. The 330 feet tall concrete headframe was safely and successfully completed in a continuous pour over 22 days. The project was also proud of the diversity of the team, with a full shift made up of female concrete truck drivers and batch operators in the process.

Extensive planning, constructability reviews, and re-engineering was required to coordinate the construction effort, which ran continuously 24 hours per day. In addition to the Hatch EPCM construction supervision and safety teams, the team deployed over 70 contractor personnel per shift, including qualified surveyors, ironworkers, carpenters, laborers, and finishers. The slipform was safely executed through changing weather conditions, external pandemic conditions, and increasing risk while working at heights. The team was extremely proud to provide the client with a high-quality product, safely constructed under extenuating circumstances, on-schedule, and under budget. A true team success story.

The market is becoming increasingly competitive and as a result, capital investments for projects are becoming increasingly difficult to justify. In some instances, the “do nothing” solution may impact a plant’s ability to maintain a stable and reliable operation. Therefore, an alternative approach must be taken to solve the problem in a cost-effective manner. Alcoa Deschambault faced this challenge when new process

conditions resulted in their existing anode stub hole cleaning machine failing to adequately clean anodes.

Manual cleaning was implemented to allow the anodes to properly mate with the yoke, but this led to ergonomics issues for the operators.

This paper elaborates on the approach taken to optimize a solution and overcome obstacles so that a costeffective alternative to manual cleaning could be implemented.

This paper describes the application of a new industrial-scale lithium-ion Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) used for increasing the capacity of renewable power integration at the Raglan nickel mine in the Nunavik region of northern Québec, Canada. Being remote and near the arctic region, the mine is not connected to the Hydro Québec grid and relies mainly on diesel generators for its power consumption of about 15-21 MW as well as heating requirements.

As part of a pilot project, a first 3-MW wind turbine has been operational at the Raglan mine since 2014 and has contributed to about 2.2 million litres of diesel fuel consumption reduction annually. To enable the integration of the second 3-MW wind turbine in 2018, a 3-MW Li-ion BESS has been implemented in the phase 2 project. The BESS charging and discharging power are controlled by a dedicated microgrid control system (Hμgrid) in such a way that the output power variations of the 6 MW wind farm are sensed and moderated. Directly as a result of the BESS implementation, an additional 3,080 MWh of wind power has been integrated into the mine over the first 10 months of operation.

Since start-up, the system has had a high degree of reliability and efficiency in the harsh climatic conditions. This paper provides an overview of BESS and summarizes the operating results.
