ALUMNI NEWS

you are. If you ever want to get back into shape, I would strongly recommend yoga as part of any exercise routine.” I got an email from Hal Martin who reports that he does not have a lot of news except that life is good. He also has some good ideas for our upcoming reunion. I think a plan may be hatching at this very moment. I, Tami Fox Brau, am still living in Austin and looking forward to seeing everyone at our 50th Reunion. We should definitely have a blowout time.

Pat Kidson Fogle Cavanagh Houston, Texas pat.cavanagh@kinkaid.org Here’s the news from several classmates. From Rob Wilson: “Bess & I had dinner with Dale ’65 and Peggy Dickson Martin ’65 last month at their beautiful ranch outside of Brenham. We caught up on a lot of wonderful high school memories including the 1964 Football Season. Dale surprised me with a tape of the 1964 Kinkaid vs. St John’s football game! I have since shared the tape with Ernie Graham and Big Dave Boldrick!” From Gayl Ware Carlberg: “Thanks to you (Pat), I am now enjoying my third term on the Kinkaid Alumni Board. I love staying connected to Kinkaid in such an important way and feel great whenever I can contribute something to Kinkaid’s ongoing success. Our children are both back in Texas. Both Chris ’01 and Kirby ’04 went straight to NYC after graduating from college to try their hand at my profession, advertising! Each lived there for about four-and-a-half years before moving to Austin. Chris is now a Senior Art Director at one of the largest ad agencies in America, GSD+M, and Kirby was transferred from NYC to the Austin office of one of the largest digital agencies in the world, R/GA. Madman and Madwoman! Along with my husband Chuck, I am still hard at work running our ad agency here in Houston.” Gibb Bauer (fs) sends this exciting news: “I heard Martha Reeves was making a comeback. https://www.youtube.com/ watch?v=XE2fnYpwrng” I must say Gibb’s news was definitely a trip down memory lane! Jim Tang organized a mini-reunion in Houston the last weekend in March for about 25 of his Princeton classmates and their spouses. Classmates came in from California, New York, Michigan, Arizona, Kansas and Texas. They visited Rice University, Texas Medical Center, San Jacinto Monument, Houston Museum of Fine Arts, the Bayou City Art Festival and played golf at Tour 18 golf course. Among their

attendees was fellow Kinkaid and Princeton classmate Liz and Dick Respess from Dallas. Jim and Elizabeth Tang’s son Jeffrey Tang ’05 graduated in May from UT Dental School and plans to practice general dentistry in Houston following his graduation. Margaret Frederking Barton and her husband Richard Shullaw have recently returned from a fabulous trip to China. They walked the Great Wall, got lost (and found!) in the Beijing subway, saw the terracotta warriors in Xian, cruised the Yangtze River and enjoyed Shanghai. The best part was the final stop in Hong Kong where they visited with Margaret’s daughter Travis who has been working there for over a year. They saw all the best sights and even shared a Chinese lesson with her. And now they’re dreaming of where (and when!) they’ll go on their next visit. Last Christmas they enjoyed a trip to Seattle where Richard’s daughter and her family are newly settled, and they love drives to Charlottesville to see Richard’s son and his twin boys. It was great to see Bobby and Becky Lorino last November, and they hope to see them again along with more Houston friends when they’re in Houston next. From Rod Crowl: “My son David Crowl and wife Stephanie bought a small house in the Heights to get a toehold in the Houston real estate market. They are going to Prague, Berlin, Vienna and UK this summer on one of those study abroad deals from Steph’s MBA classes at UH. My son-in-law David Keck continues to get accolades for his wine bar, Camerata at Paulies, on Westheimer. Drop by for a drink and tell him you went to Kinkaid with his father-in-law. (He won’t charge you more). My daughter Sarah Crowl (David’s wife) is still ensconced at Uchi. Ask for her if you go there. She can guide you through their menu. Linda and I are planning a trip to Montreal and Vermont in the fall.” Rod wants to know... ”Who was Martha Reeves?” Hellooooooo, Rod. Watch the video or call Gibb. David Boldrick sent several bullet points (or perhaps free verse poetry): • Got a great film from Rob Wilson • So fun to watch us crush St. John’s • Hard to believe I was so skinny • Other news • Had my seventh grandkid • My youngest Zach and Lauren had their second little boy Ellison Foster Boldrick • Sounds like a law firm • He is the cutest baby. Sounds weird from me but he is • Susan and I off to Cabo at the end of the month. Rob, come meet us. • Selling my imported Chinese un-American refrig equipment. • Good stuff – cheap price That is all from me. Write it up, Pat!”

Best to all, David So great to hear from Jeanne Moran Cunningham: “Loved Martha Reeves and The Vandellas – “Dancing in the Street” is a fave. But I really remember us dancing down the halls, spring semester senior year singing – what we thought was our very own song. Can you guess it? The Animals “We Gotta Get Out Of This Place”! Thanks for reviving those old, OLD memories, Gibb!” It sounds like Maria Whitmore Klein is not letting any grass grow under her feet. She writes, “Hi, all. No real news from Klein Ranch. We have been traveling quite a bit which has been a lot of fun. So far this year we have been to the Dominican Republic, Casa de Campo (if you play golf, this is the place). We just got back from Abaco Beach Resort in the Bahamas. California will be our next trip in July. Santa Fe will be in August for the opera, and Bordeaux will be in September for cooking and wine. Somebody think of someplace we can go in June!!!” And, last but not least, Becky Smith Huff writes: “We enjoyed the Respess’ hospitality at their beautiful Galveston beach house and the visit with you (Pat) and Craig. John Diffey organized a mini-reunion In Dallas with Liz and Dick Respess and David Boldrick when John and I were attending a Leading Age conference. We both have chosen a career path in the nonprofit longterm care industry where there is no age discrimination!” As for me, I am completing my 30th year of teaching at Kinkaid. Amazing even to me! This grandma-goes-to-college year has been stimulating and challenging. Lots of reading, lots of writing, lots of learning, not much free time! Craig and I are looking forward to spending a week this summer in North Carolina with daughter Rebecca Fogle Warriner ’93 (fs) and her sweet family. In July the entire clan – Rebecca and family, Elizabeth Fogle Sparks ’91 (fs) and family, and Will Fogle and family – will spend a week under the same roof in Jackson Hole. Craig and I will be two happy grandparents. Watch out, Yellowstone. Here we come! Our 50th reunion will be here sooner than later (April, 2016). As soon as the dates are known, I will let everyone know. PLEASE make plans to be in Houston for that weekend. Stay safe and healthy. Blessings to all.

SUMMER 2014

also. Carter Hood Cunningham and Peggy Durham sent some things for my book. I have not seen either since high school. We are not cruising but going to see the USA by car. Our first trip will be to California, Oregon, Washington, British Columbia (not US) and Utah. I am going to finally be a grandmother; Emilie Marie Webb is due in September. Happy 65th birthday to all of us. Laurye” Sarita and Joseph Tennant just got back from a wonderful trip to Guatemala where Joseph served as a Peace Corps Volunteer in 1971-72 with the Agricultural Cooperative of San Andres Semetabaj. They spent three days in Panajachel on the Lake Atitlan, one mile above sea level and perhaps the most beautiful lake in the Western Hemisphere, and three days in La Antigua, Guatemala, the Capital of the Spanish New World before it was destroyed by earthquakes in 1773. Joey and Sarita traveled by boat and by foot to native villages around Lake Atitlan, one with a weaving co-operative, another with a coffee co-operative, and also returned to the villages on the mountain where he lived. In La Antiqua, they stayed in a historic convent that was abandoned after the earthquakes hit, but in the last 25 years it has been transformed into a modern five-star hotel behind the peaceful walls of the six-acre Mission Church. While there, Joey and Sarita were thrilled to visit with a former Peace Corps and Texas Aggie colleague that has worked all over the world for over 30 years with USAID. They also went shopping at the Central Market in La Antiqua. It was a very interesting and relaxing trip.

Elizabeth Topper Nash San Marcos, Texas enash@grandecom.net Annie Owen Houston, Texas anniedowen@me.com Yes, there were less than 68 members in our graduating class. I just attended Kinkaid 2014 graduation with a class of 139 students, the largest in the history of the school. The ceremony was longer than I had remembered, with a lot of changes; however, the weather was perfect!

Steve Adger Houston, Texas sadger@yahoo.com From Laurye Rutten Tanner: “Carlos and I are doing quite well. Memorial Weekend, he threw me a birthday party. He really outdid himself. I don’t know if I can top him. He also wrote a book about my life including pictures not only from my family but friends
