Senior Profiles Christina Fondren
The University of Virginia
F
rom the time she entered Kinkaid in 9th grade, Christina proved to be just the kind of student, athlete and leader who makes the School what it is. She managed an impressive academic load while playing multiple varsity sports and serving in various leadership roles, including Peer Mentor Leader. Christina feels fortunate to have experienced such a friendly and supportive atmosphere at Kinkaid. “The teachers and deans are truly always there for you,” she says. She particularly appreciates her cheer coach and English teacher, Ms. Kehler, and she credits Spanish teacher Mr. Longoria with inspiring her love and appreciation for the language. During Interim Term her sophomore year Christina travelled to China, “the trip of a lifetime”, she shares. The opportunity to learn about other cultures through travel has been one of the highlights of her time at Kinkaid, something she plans to do more of while attending The University of Virginia. She wants to go back to China and also hopes to spend a semester in Spain. Christina’s only regret about her four years at Kinkaid is not having the time to get involved in community service, another of her passions. She advises new students, “Don’t be afraid to try something new, whether it’s a sport or arts activity. Work your hardest and be involved in whatever interests you. Make the most of every moment because it goes by tremendously quick!”
Carrie Walker
Vanderbilt University
I
f you walked by any number of rehearsal studios at Kinkaid over the past four years, you would likely see Carrie Walker singing, dancing or choreographing something for an upcoming production. “My biggest passion at Kinkaid has been the arts—the musicals, Dance Company and Encore,” Carrie says. “There’s a special bond that happens when you’re part of a group of people who are all so creative and committed to a common goal, that rehearse day and night. We got very close, and they are some of my best friends.” The same can be said for her softball teammates and the experience she had playing four years on the varsity team. Carrie still had time to make academics a top priority, spending hours in Kinkaid math classrooms and science labs in preparation for her pre-med studies at Vanderbilt University. “My favorite class was AP Chemistry with Mr. Kliza. The work was overwhelming but fun. Where else can you ask, ‘Can we set something on fire?’ and have the answer be, ‘Sure, let me get a gummy bear!’” Carrie will miss the incredible support from teachers, friends and parents and the unique environment that fostered those relationships. “There’s something very special about Kinkaid,” she shares. “It’s really a family.”
