AROUND CAMPUS
New Lower & Middle School Uniforms Contributed by LS Reading Specialist Pat Cavanagh After more than 25 years Kinkaid’s lower and middle school uniforms are changing! Lower School Principal Krista Babine and Middle School Principal Barry Spiers worked with a committee of parents to choose an updated, fresher look for both boys and girls. The new lower school girls’ jumper and skort is a plaid design made exclusively for Kinkaid. A crisp white sailor blouse with a Kinkaid-plaid tie completes the girls’ uniform. Boys prekindergarten – 8th grade will wear khaki pants or shorts and white polo shirts with the white-on-white embroidered Kinkaid crest. Knowing the generosity of Kinkaid families, Mrs. Babine, Lower School Reading Specialist and KOCI Kids sponsor Pat Cavanagh, Middle School sixth grade dean Andrew Herman, and Lower School registrar, Yasi Khosrowshahi, made plans for a 3-day uniform recycling event. During the final 3 days of school, parents delivered over 10,000 uniform pieces to the Lower School Big Room. Third and fourth grade student volunteers helped pack, seal, and stack approximately 107 3’ X 3’ boxes. Thanks to Mrs. Joanna Raynes who coordinated the eventual delivery of these boxes to a school for 3000 students in Zambia and one with 120 students in Kenya. Locally, former Lower School Principal Dr. Ellen Welsh was given blazers for Nehemiah Middle School, an inner-city school which she founded in 2011. When students return in late August there will be much excitement in the air, not only because a new school year will begin but also because there will be an entirely new look for all to enjoy. Congratulations to all who helped in choosing our new uniforms!

KOCI Kids Visits Small Steps
Contributed by LS Reading Specialist Pat Cavanagh Small Steps Nurturing Center is a non-profit organization that provides early childhood education and nurtures the social, emotional, physical, intellectual and spiritual growth of economically at-risk children in the inner-city of Houston. KOCI Kids strives to help our Kinkaid community, our Houston community, our global community and our Earth. So, when KOCI Kids takes on a project for Small Steps, it is a perfect pairing of kids-helpingkids. This spring first and third grade members decorated and filled creative birthday boxes, made personalized number books, and collected, decorated and filled bags of toiletries for the children of Small Steps. In early April, Lower School Principal Krista Babine and KOCI Kids sponsor Pat Cavanagh took a small group of KOCI Kids members to deliver these gifts to the Jensen campus of Small Steps. Kathie Hartzog, 8
program director of the Jensen campus, gave us a tour of the building and invited us into the classroom where we presented each child with his or her number book. Later the same day during KOCI Kids’ weekly meeting, Verna Noack, Small Steps Development Director (and coincidentally, Ron Gutowsky’s cousin!), came to Kinkaid in order to receive the beautiful decorated birthday boxes and toiletry bags for each Small Steps child. Small Steps and KOCI Kids---a winning combination!
