Editor’s Note Welcome to the first issue of All A Board! Babies need books. Why? In a word, words. Babies need to hear them, toddlers need to say them, and books have plenty of them. Reading to baby helps build a foundation for literacy—pictures and print, story and verse, mortar and bricks. Book choice matters. Babies love to exercise and show off new skills. Select books based on developing interests and abilities, serve with a little (green eggs and) ham, and likely baby will bite! All A Board! is all about the book. Its main mission is to catalog and index new board book releases by season for anyone and everyone who reads to babies. Articles touch on topics relating to baby’s first books and the people who make them—writers, illustrators, publishers, manufacturers—as well as research regarding early book sharing. In this first issue, author/illustrator Steve Light talks about his first board book, Trucks Go, and his newest, Black Bird Yellow Sun. I dissect a wonderful, bilingual board book by Susie Jaramillo, and dish up a short stack of new titles to view.

A big THANK YOU to all the publishers who responded to my queries and requests for book information, cover images, and review copies! The magazine would not be possible without you. Ready, set... read for the fun of it! Linda McInnis, MEd

Little elephants/elefantitos is based on a Spanish language nursery song. Its repetitive verse can be sung or read aloud in English or Spanish. Sung, the rhythm of the rhyme slows, stretching out and accenting words for learning. This is music to baby’s ears. A free, downloadable app teaches the melody. The song tells a story, simple and satisfying.

Interview

Author/illustrator Steve Light is many things—an artist, a writer, a creative recycler. (Check out his picture book Swap!) He agreed to meet over lunch to talk about his board books. We ordered. Thank you for agreeing to be interviewed for All A Board! Let’s talk about your books. First, Black Bird Yellow Sun. It is brilliant! It looks to be the first time you’ve used cut-paper collage as an art medium in a board book. Yes. Actually, the black bird and the worm are cut-paper and the rest is printed with cardboard shapes. I would cut out the shape of the sun, put printing ink on it, and print it. The black bird was cut out of black paper and glued down and the worm was cut out of orange. Those are the only two collage elements—the black paper and orange paper for the black bird and the orange worm. It is a big departure from my other work. It’s very exciting. Why the switch? I was inspired by the artist Ellsworth Kelly who does these really bold, simple, colored shape paintings. I thought that would be good graphically for children’s books. Then, I was listening to the Beatles’ song, “Blackbird,” and thought, Oh, the blackbird against other colors would be really interesting and graphic. That’s how the whole idea came about. At first I was going to paint the shapes, but the result was too flat. I had little scrap pieces of cardboard on my table for some reason. I put some paint on those, stamped, and got a much more graphic quality. So, I got some printing inks and

8

finished another board book in the same style for Candlewick Press called Mama Tiger Tiger Cub. It’s a really fun way to work. When will that be out? That will be out next year, probably April—about the same time Black Bird Yellow Sun came out, but next year. Here’s a picture of one of your fans. Okay. He’s seven months old. I overheard his mom say that Black Bird Yellow Sun was one of his favorite books. I asked her why. This is what she said: “John is drawn to the texture of the illustration and will often rake at interesting patterns or pops of color such as the snake eye or places where the

paint is sparse and then thick. I like how he readily follows Black bird through the day. He can turn the page and visually locate Black Bird without prompting.” The interesting thing is that the book was actually done smaller, like 6 by 6. When Candlewick saw it they asked, “Can you blow it up bigger?” When they did, you really saw the texture. I really loved that. That’s part of working with Candlewick. They think about these things. They are such a great publisher. That really made it work. (I shared what I loved about the book: The orange worm that keeps Black Bird company throughout; the bold, graphic quality of the bird image, drawn in a variety of sizes, from a variety of perspectives, that introduces young

9

eyes to form constancy; Black Bird hiding behind green grass screens, touching on peek-a-boo play; and the simple yet oh-so-effective story arc which includes a bit of danger—a snake.) A little bit of danger. There was talk that the snake might be too scary, but it’s okay. That’s part of life. He’s not that scary of a snake. (Steve mentioned that his first proofs for the book included one two-page spread without the worm. His publisher noted that readers would notice.) I’m glad Candlewick said that. They actually digitally put him in that one page. It’s the only thing digital in the book. Everything else is hand done. It’s really difficult to do a story without it being too much of a story. Everyone thinks, Oh, just a little board book, but as you work you are thinking about every little thing in there, just because it is so little. You have a wonderful knack for writing for babies. Let’s talk about your board book, Have You Seen my Lunchbox? Is there a story behind the story? I’ve done a lot of picture books with Candlewick—my Trucks Go, Trains Go, all of those Go board books are with a different publisher—and Candlewick was interested in doing a board with me. We had had success with Have You Seen My Dragon?, so we put the little boy from that book in a board book. We did a lunchbox because every kid gets their lunch box to go to school. Cubbies and getting ready

10

is a common theme. If you look inside Have You Seen My Lunchbox?, you’ll see the little boy has a stuffed dragon on his bed. He draws the dragon and the monster from Have You Seen My Dragon? and Have You Seen My Monster? on his sidewalk. The colored shapes are hand painted paper. I collaged them down then drew around them. The color on the left hand page is the color of the thing that you’re searching for on the right. Then, whatever the background color is on the right, when you turn the page, that’s the color on the left. Have You Seen My Dragon? is mostly black and white. I really feel a board book needs to be graphically very interesting for the younger ones. That’s why we did bold color shapes in Have You Seen My Lunch Box?. It was a really fun book to do. (Steve tells me that his favorite part of Have You Seen My Lunch Box? is the cubby line up on the book’s back cover.) I teach pre-K, 3 ½ to 4 year olds, and their cubby, putting their lunch boxes away in their cubby, is a big thing. I had a lot of lunch boxes growing up—an Evel Knievel lunch box, a Snoopy lunch box, a Flint-

11

stones lunch box. We had them all under the counter. I used to take them out and line them up. I was big on lunch boxes. On the back cover there is one little lunch box that is not in the cubby. Let’s talk about Trucks Go, your very first board book. What inspired the move to a board book format? How it came about is an interesting story. I had a little boy in my class and everyday he would draw trucks, only trucks. He would only draw them with a green marker and little dots of red for lights. He had such joy while he was drawing them. I was proposing three complete picture books to a book packager, three picture book ideas. I was a little frustrated with what I was working on, what I was doing artistically, so I went out to visit my mom. We went to a craft store and I bought three colors of really cheap water color. I bought a dowel, a stick, a really cheap brush, and a pad of paper. I woke up early the next day, sat at my mom’s kitchen table, and I just painted trucks—like when I was a kid. I was thinking about that little boy and how much joy he had. I didn’t think anything of them. I did a few trucks and wound up putting them in a portfolio. It happened to be the same portfolio that I put the books I was proposing in. I did not show them the truck

12

work, but when I was putting everything away, I went to put everything in the portfolio, and I’m like, “What’s in here?” I took the trucks out, put them on the table, put everything else back in and they are like, “Wait. What are those?” “Oh, they are just trucks I painted,” and I told a little bit of the story I just said. “Oh, these are great! We can do these long.” For some reason I drew them long, I don’t know why. “We’ll do a long book. What if you just did the sounds?” I was like, “Okay.” That’s how Trucks Go came about. It wasn’t a book I proposed or anything. They put the book together and brought it to Chronicle and Chronicle published it. Then we did Trains Go. We did six of them. They were a lot of fun to do. Were you surprised when the first one took off like it did? Yes. I totally was like, Oh, it’s just a little board book on trucks. When you close your eyes and imagine someone reading Trucks Go, how old is the child? They are about 3 or 4, maybe even a little younger, 2 ½. Your illustrations are picture perfect for babies. (Earlier in his career, Steve designed story boxes with props that bring stories to life. Steve shared some thoughts about storytelling.) Part of being a storyteller is making the story your own, telling it with your own twist. When I was a storyteller, I used to tell a lot of Grimms’ fairy tales. I told the stories, then told the kids, “Now you know them and you can share them. You

13

can even change them a little bit. That’s okay. You can make them your own.” Stories are so important. There is a great quote, Stories are more important than bread. They teach us how to live and why. I think too, hearing it, just hearing a story, is such a different experience—not having a book, not even having story box props—when you just tell them a story and they have to make the pictures in their head. I always tell them, when I am telling the stories, not to interrupt. “Any questions you have, you have to keep in your head till the end, then you can raise your hand and ask me. If you interrupt me, I might forget what happens and we’ll never know how it ends.” Your books do a lot of talking with pictures. Do you plan to do a wordless picture book? It’s funny because the one I am working on now has the most words of any of my books. I have thought of a wordless picture book. I think it’s one of the highest forms of children’s picture book art, but you know, I am not going to force it. I am not going to sit down and say, “I am going to do a wordless picture book.” I am going to wait for it to find me, for that story to find me. Whenever you try chasing it down, you don’t catch it. In closure, would you like to talk a little bit about what you are working on now? I’m really excited about the one that comes out in October, Builders and Breakers. It is about demolition and construction. The kid in me loves all the construction in New York

14

City. I love the walls that they build around the sites with the holes you can look through. They play a little part in the story visually. It’s about a brother and sister whose father is a construction worker. He forgets his lunch box. They run after him and get to see all the things at the construction site. It was fun to revel in all that mechanical stuff that I love and to hide things in the pictures. When they’re digging in the dirt they find dinosaur bones, things like that, fun things. Time to eat. I was struck by the serendipitous nature of Light’s creative work. An artistic road block and cluttered portfolio paved the way for Trucks Go. Vivid imagery from a favorite artist and a song flew together to make Black Bird Yellow Sun. An idea for a board book, fed by childhood memories, gets packed in a lunch box. And always, it seems, the child in him and the kids from his class, peek out from the page. Thank you, Steve Light!

newborn

18 months

Books for very young babies tickle ears with language sounds. Bold graphics, sound, and movement draw fuzzy eyes to the page. Books may have black and white pictures, puppet inserts, crinkly pages, songs to sing, bright baby faces, rhythm and rhyme, or an accordion spine for supervised tummy time.

Books for 18 to 24 month olds expand on the basics with a farmyard full of animals or a construction site busy with diggers and loaders for naming. Pictures and simple verse teach the language of feelings and emotion. Nursery and nonsense rhymes tickle baby’s funny bone. Book content mirrors toddlers’ growing sense of independence, especially in areas of self care. Concept books introduce colors, shapes, opposites, letters, and numbers 1 through 5. Early favorites become repeat reads. Anatomy books teach more parts.

6 months Books for 6 to 12 month olds are necessarily sturdy boards. They teach names of noisy things—animals, toys, vehicles—one thing, one noise, one page at a time. They may have holes to poke, pages to sniff, flaps to peek under, mirror inserts, songs to sing, and rhymes that play off the page. One and two word sentences label baby’s day.

12 months Books for 12 to 18 month olds are language primers with small and large pictures to point to. Many detail daily routines—sleeping, eating, playing, dressing, bathing, helping. Books may introduce concepts such as sharing, Oops!, OhOh! and No!. They may teach baby anatomy— Head, Shoulders, Knees, and Toes…

24 months Books for toddlers and young preschoolers, ages 24 to 36 months, have simple stories, relatable characters, and ask questions. Concept books teach manners, more colors, shapes and opposites, letters, and numbers 1 through 10. Board books based on picture books spark interest.

36+ months

Books for preschoolers carry more story, or have page elements safety-rated for children 3 years and older
