have an apology to make. In the last issue I inadvertently inserted a wordsearch grid on page 25 which had a lot of the letters missing making the puzzle impossible to complete. This caused a huge amount of consternation, confusion and frustration for readers which I am very sorry about. I was inundated with phone calls and emails pointing out the error for which I am truly grateful because it confirmed to me that the magazine was being read from cover to cover and an extremely valuable vehicle for our advertisers. EXCITING NEW PLAY AREA

The northern part of the play area alongside the Pavilions in the Park Car Park is to be completely renewed with an exciting adventure trail which will include a series of sprawling net play structures to take children on an adventure up to a large tree house on the top of the existing grass hill. The play area improvement has been funded through contributions from local planning developments and is aimed at providing space for more children to play in an imaginative and challenging way.

Commenting on the new developments, Horsham District Council Cabinet Member for Leisure and Culture Cllr Jonathan Chowen said: “I am delighted that our plans for this new play area are coming to fruition and that work will very soon be underway. In order to facilitate the refurbishment, the northern part of Horsham Park Play Area including the existing zip wire will be out of action from early September to mid- October.

BIG RESPONSE TO ROOKWOOD PLAN

ear Editor, I refer to your comment in the August/September edition of Horsham Pages and first of all, I am astonished that even consideration is being given to developing houses on green land, on what is obviously green belt and on an attractive golf course in Horsham. Yes, it is too close to Warnham Nature Reserve and yes, it is absurd to consider this site for even more building of houses in Horsham. You mention that it is a question of weighing the need for new housing against protecting the countryside but this comment alone, is puzzling as clearly there should be no need to build houses at any time, on what is now a golf course, on what is now green pastures in our town and what is now, our treasured nature and countryside. I can only hope that our local town council reaches a common sense approach with this and I am sure will recognise that Horsham is already full with the development of new housing and that yes, the protection of our nature and countryside comes first in any consideration of building houses in the town no matter what pressures are being made by central government to build more and more new houses in every possible city, town and village in the land. I accept the need for additional nationwide housing in view of the constant growth in the UK population but I also stress the need to protect our environment and green land and suggest that building only takes place on brown land or where it can be deemed suitable. The Government’s “Planning for the Future” proposes a presumption of planning permission on greenfield sites. Local Councils and residents will have little say in the volume, location or timing of future development and no direct say in funding of infrastructure. With the proposed massive unsustainable increase in

new build Horsham will lose its identity as it is rapidly absorbed into Crawsham and extended, largely westwards, on an uncontrolled basis. Horsham District Council, with strong support from Jeremy Quin MP, should: · Petition the Government to reduce its unsustainable development targets and ensure adequate infrastructure, that future developments are of the highest environmental standards with adequate recreation areas and include a high proportion of affordable housing for our youngsters, etc. · Demand a local major hospital – Redhill Hospital cannot cope with the influx of population, is outdated and so remote from most of the people it serves that we get a second-class service that endangers our health. · Establish a Country Park on land to the west of the Crawley Road (A264) and south of Faygate (previously an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty) to permanently protect the identity of Horsham and provide public access to the countryside. · Develop a golf course on the Country Park, in partnership with Ifield golf, to replace the probable loss of two golf courses. This should, with the recent expansion of Horsham’s Golf & Fitness’s course, provide ample golfing resources. · Construct affordable housing for our youngsters by developing publicly owned land (eg 35% of the homes proposed for Horsham District Council’s Rookwood Park). It is lovingly cared for by dedicated people who welcome us all especially the young with the various events that inform, instruct and educate in a fun way. Since the lock down there have had to be

some things put on hold but I notice a lot of young families arriving who had possibly not been before. The new building is taking shape. It will help provide a welcome to even more visitors. I have lived in Horsham for many years and as a child used to drive through it with my mother. I love this town and the amount of development is devastating. I completely agree with regularly building and improving housing stock but not the vast developments that are taking place. For me the golf course and nature reserve are areas that should be forever ring fenced to keep our green space and ensure the town retains its ambience and reputation as a great place to live. I am extremely concerned that the Council has already made a decision and will hide behind Government ‘instructions’. Our own MP sent out a standard reply to my letter to him advising me to engage with the Council despite my enclosing copies of my letters to them and a copy of the attached. As you can imagine I was far from impressed. Lastly I would just add that the proposal is to put 1000+ houses on an area similar to the Rookwood Park development that has 52. One should remember Horsham is a small town. A MUSEUM FIT FOR THE FUTURE

orsham Museum and Art Gallery is set to undertake one of the most dramatic changes in its 126-year-old history as work begins to modernise and refresh displays, introduce a digital cultural heritage offer, and improve the customer experience. The temporary closure of the Museum due to Covid-19 and the ongoing challenge of introducing safety measures in a 600-year-old building which doesn’t lend itself to social distancing, has provided an opportunity for the Council to look at ways of refreshing and modernising its offer to the public whilst the building is closed. The Council is committed to safeguarding and protecting the District’s heritage, culture and memories and the Museum in the Causeway provides the perfect backdrop to tell Horsham’s story. The refresh will tell new stories with rationalised and carefully curated collections and will use digital technology to complement the offer. In the meantime the Council has overcome the challenges of social distancing and launched a new website – to allow visitors from across the world to discover stories and objects from Horsham District’s past. New features and sections will continue to be added over the coming months, encouraging more people than ever to engage with Horsham District’s history.

OBESITY & CV-19 - WHAT IS THE LINK?

OVID-19 and its effects have scared us all, health professionals and public alike. We’re still learning about the virus, but one fact has been all over the news in the past couple of months. Obese people (people with a BMI over 30) are more at risk of complications. Why is this? Most of my friends with BMIs close to or greater than 30 seem perfectly healthy individuals. Should they be worried? In order to answer this question, we need to look at the immune system: When we catch a virus our body’s defence system is triggered, and inflammation occurs. This is due to our all-purpose innate immune response, which serves as the first wave against foreign invaders. Blood flow increases to the infected area causing redness and swelling. When your nose blocks and becomes red when you catch a cold, that’s inflammation. This reaction is caused by white blood cells called macrophages and the proteins they produce called cytokines. It’s the cytokines which trigger inflammation. Usually this inflammation is a simply a sign that our body is releasing the hormones and proteins which activate our white blood cells to kickstart the recovery process, and ultimately defeat the infection. No inflammation means no defence…and that’s bad. So far so good; so why is obesity a problem? Well it turns out that white blood cells aren’t the only type of cell that have the ability to produce those inflammation-inducing cytokines. Fat cells (adipocytes) can also do this. Scientists have learned that fat is an active endocrine organ, one that can secrete a whole host of proteins and chemicals, including inflammatory cytokines. When your body keeps adding adipose tissue (fat) cytokines are released by your fat cells, triggering inflammation. Researchers even characterised obesity as ‘…a state of low-grade,

chronic inflammation.’ This means that an obese body has its immune system permanently switched on and is therefore in a constant state of inflammation. Over time this can lead to the development of both minor and major illness and conditions, such as heart disease and diabetes. How does this relate to COVID-19? Back in 2009 the H1N1 Swine Flu was at its most virulent, doctors in Spain noticed that overweight and obese patients were being admitted to intensive care units in disproportionate numbers and took longer to recover than non-obese or overweight individuals. Their increased risk was attributed to the excess number of pro-inflammatory cytokines in their bodies. Researchers in Canada then analysed the flu records for the previous 12 years and found that people who were obese were statistically more likely to be admitted to hospital for respiratory diseases than those whose BMI was in the normal range. They concluded that obese people were an “at risk” population during flu seasons due to their compromised immune response. As we go into the winter and the risk of a second wave of coronavirus, if you have a BMI over 30 it makes sense to try to bring it down and minimise your risk. Talk to your GP. CINDER TOFFEE Part science experiment and part sweet treat. This is fun for the kids and perfect for Halloween and bonfire night. Preparation time: 5 minutes Cooking time: 15-20 minutes (plus cooling) Serves: Depends how sweet your tooth is! fkdobafbkqp= 165g demerara sugar 165g caster sugar 60ml golden syrup 4 tbsp water 15g butter, diced, plus extra to grease Pinch of salt 1 tbsp bicarbonate of soda * You will also need a kitchen thermometer jbqela=

enerously grease an approximately 24cm square tin. Put the bicarbonate of soda within easy reach of the hob. Place both sugars, syrup, water, and butter in a deep, heavy-bottomed pan with a pinch of salt. (Make sure it is a deep pan or the 'science bit' will go horribly badly!). Heat gently, stirring, until the sugars and butter have dissolved, then turn up the heat slightly and bring to the boil. Simmer until it reaches 138C turns amber and bubbles - this will take about 10-15 minutes. When the mixture gets to temperature, remove it from the heat and quickly and thoroughly whisk in the bicarb. It will foam and grow alarmingly. The kids will love it! Pour the foamy mixture into the tin and leave to set. When cold get the kids to smash it into pieces. Optional: Pour melted chocolate over the shards for the ultimate cinder toffee treat.

mean bad news for your health, respiratory health, and overall ability to recover. Health professionals suggest that this year we should have our shots as early as September. Even though typical flu season begins in October and peaks between December and February, the changes brought on by COVID-19 mean that it's important to get organised early because you will probably need a formal appointment, even at a pharmacy. Winter is a particularly busy time for GPs and hospitals. Vaccinating to protect against flu could help reduce the risk of the NHS becoming overwhelmed with cases of both flu and COVID19. AUTUMN SHOW WILL GO AHEAD

ollowing the cancellation of Spring Live! and The South of England Show, The South of England Agricultural Society is delighted to announce that the Autumn Show & Game Fair 2020 has been given the green light and will go ahead as planned. Deemed a ‘Good to Go’ venue by Visit England, and adhering to strict new Covid-19 regulations, this year’s show will take place at The South of England Showground in Ardingly on Saturday 3rd and Sunday 4th October, between 9am and 5pm each day. Although government guidelines mean that some hands-on activities will have to be restricted this year, the 2020 Autumn Show & Game Fair will still be a visual feast for visitors with a superb programme of demonstrations and displays that celebrate the British countryside. It will feature the ever-popular shopping opportunities from local and independent producers, with everything from homemade fudge to dog training equipment on offer. Firm favourites will be returning, and the worldfamous Jonathan Marshall’s horseback displays will still take place in the showground’s main ring, alongside gundog training and falconry demonstrations. Animals lovers can meet and learn about farmyard favourites in the Animal Barn, admire the wagging tails of the rare breed gundogs, and be mesmerised by the capabilities of ferrets and birds of prey with various demonstrations. Foodies will be in their element with stalls from local and independent producers. Plus, there will be a

plethora of mouth-watering food stalls to choose from when it comes to eating at the event. Unique vintage agricultural machinery, Scammell and traction engines will also be on display to recreate and educate about a bygone era. The clay shooting competition will still be available for adults and juniors and experts will be on hand to demonstrate their skills in fly fishing and hedge laying. Corrie Ince, new Show Director at The South of England Agricultural Society, commented: “We are absolutely thrilled that the Autumn Show and Game Fair will go ahead this year. While we had to take the difficult but right decision to cancel the spring and summer shows, we know that the South of England Showground is a huge outdoor space and, as such, is perfect place for socially distanced events. Since July we have already hosted a successful International Antiques and Collectors Fair, and Drivein Comedy and Movie nights. There will be hand washing and sanitising stations and a social distancing policy throughout the entire show and showground, with face coverings required in the inside areas. For the protection of everyone at the event, tickets to the Autumn Show and Game Fair 2020 will be limited and should be booked at www.seas.org.uk before arrival to ensure entry, and to avoid queues. Tickets cost £11.70 for adults, £9.90 for senior citizens/students (inclusive of 10% online discount until midnight 02.10.20) - under 16s go free. Dogs are welcome although they will not be admitted to indoor areas.

offey Cricket Club has been at the heart of the Roffey community for decades, even centuries. It provides the people of the community with entertaining, league winning Cricket season after season, this little known about Cricket Club are one of the best clubs in Sussex, winning leagues with the 1st, all the way through to the 3rd teams. We have a friendly, welcoming atmosphere with a great community spirit. Roffey CC also provides sessions for the Colts, for any budding 5-16 yr old cricketers out there. The Cricket Club relies heavily on donations and the good will of the community and it's members for its day to day running and this is where we need your help. The clubhouse is in desperate need of a revamp, due to increased

social and corporate event requirements, however, the funds are, unfortunately, in short supply. The Club have started a crowdfunding campaign to raise £8,000 for the clubhouse revamp as it would help to increase the appeal of the club for further events, therefore helping to increase its own funding prospects.
