The Virtual Horsham initiative forms part of the Council's recently launched Buy Local campaign which is supporting local traders that have continued to work tirelessly throughout the Coronavirus to deliver vital

scenes. Horsham District Council Cabinet Member for the Local Economy Cllr Paul Clarke explained: "Choosing to buy your goods from local bakers, farm shops, independent cafes or a district-based craftsperson is a really good way to support a circular economy. "Every time you buy local you are helping a whole network of suppliers and tradespeople, keeping local jobs open for local people. "I would encourage as many of you as possible to access the Virtual Horsham shopping portal and shop local as much as you possibly can." "Buying local is also good for the local environment, reducing our District's carbon footprint – so it’s a winwin all round." Visit Horsham owner, Gavin Hewins is excited to be able to extend their services to support the local business community by providing the portal saying: “We were keen to build on the success of the Essential Horsham Shopping and Services portal we created with the Council in March this year, and which is being updated for this lockdown. This shopping portal goes beyond this and offers the community a one stop directory to keep their online purchasing local.” For more information visit www.virtualhorsham.co.uk

scorching red hot furnace blazes out on one of the twenty new trails that has forged together the passion of local community for their heritage, the initiative of the Horsham District Community Partnerships Forum and funding from the Heritage lottery fund. Together with the support of Horsham District Council, some 40 volunteers and Treetop Design a stunning, engaging and informative range of trails have been created to entice residents and visitors alike to explore Horsham districts amazing heritage. With stories ranging from a memorial to a submarine crew, to medieval iron working, to gardeners to making salt, these 20 trails (four examples above) reveal just how rich, but also hidden the past is. The project, initiated by the Horsham District Community Partnerships Forum back in 2018, was intended as a way of using heritage to promote tourism, to help the local economy. Now thanks to Covid its importance has been transformed as

people search out local walks that connect them to their place and so contribute to a sense of wellbeing, as the Heritage Lottery Fund were keen to promote. Though the trails were the final outcome, what was as important was the training of volunteers in writing and producing trails. So a guide for groups to create their own has also been written, pointing out, as the trails do, interesting features and the path to follow to create an engaging well thought out route to the destination. Drawing inspiration from the Millennium Heritage trail, some 32 plaques scattered across the district the Heritage lottery funded project enabled community groups to explore further their local heritage and explain to others why they should seek it out. It captures people’s passions for their area, stories that grabbed their imagination, be it a gate post from a long lost garden on the outskirts of Horsham to a Burmese door in Storrington. Most of the trails are designed for walking, though two that

Kate Akers Kate recently celebrated 30 years behind the chair and simply loves her job. “To be honest, I can’t believe it’s been 30 years! Hair fashions are constantly changing, when I started people would show me magazine cuttings of Jennifer Aniston or Lady Diana, now they bring in their mobile phone and show me Instagram images which we adapt for them!”. Royston Killner On November the 29th, Roy celebrated 22 years at Studio 2 the last 13 of which he’s commuted in from his home in Essex (103 miles each way!)! “I wouldn’t do it if I didn’t love it” he exclaims. “My career highlight is probably being flown out to France by a client who would only have her hair cut by me!” Lucy Keeling Lucy joined the salon 5 years ago as an apprentice, “I was really shy when I arrived, but Mandy saw something in me and invested in my training and education and in 5 years I have won two colour competitions and now train our apprentices. What I particularly love is how the team supports each other

A

very special installation of angels is came to Trafalgar Road Baptist Church in December. A gorgeous display of 35 hand-knitted angels will be on show outside the front of the church, to celebrate advent, to remember those who have died this year, and to

raise vital funds for St Catherine’s Hospice. The angels are also dedicated to the staff of St Catherine’s to thank them for the care they’ve given local people throughout a very difficult year. A group of 12 ladies from the church, including Jackie Hutchinson, have worked tirelessly on the beautiful installation. Here, Jackie (pictured left) tells us more. “The idea started developing during the dark months of January and February. Back then, we never imagined how significant our angels would become. We’ve been working on our angels since September and we’re really pleased to see them coming together. To make a donation or to buy one of the angels please visit: ww.justgiving.com/ fundraising/christmasangels2020

THE WINTER GARDEN but gain a second lease of life when covered with frosted cobwebs. Plants like these will make you want to get out in your garden even in winter, so add a little scent with a winter jasmine or a sarcococca confusa (Christmas box) which has tiny white highly scented flowers. These late flowering plants provide a source of nectar for early pollinators. I no longer tidy my flower beds. I leave piles of fallen leaves and debris in beds to provide shelter for wildlife. f I say ‘winter garden’ what do you imagine? A

Watch where and when the sunlight falls and plan accordingly. Grasses look beautiful when they are covered in frost and backlit. The red or yellow winter stems of Cornus (or dogwood) however seem to glow when winter sunshine illuminates them directly. Most suburban houses have smaller gardens, easily visible from the house so it’s important to choose plants which look good in more than one season. As well as shrubs with good stem colour, look for smaller trees with pretty bark. There are plenty of small Japanese Maples which can be grown in tubs. If you have a little more space a silver birch can look stunning, or even my favourite, the paper-bark maple, Acer griseum, which is a slow-growing small tree, pretty all year round with crimson leaves in the autumn then a characteristic chestnut bark which peels naturally to reveal bright orange red bark underneath. Look for plants with architectural shapes such as one of the sculptural eryngiums (sea holly), salvias or sedums. All look beautiful in the summer and autumn

lenty of rabbits are housed outside for the whole year; however over winter it is important to ensure they are warm enough. Below are some suggestions on how to keep your rabbits warm. • Ensure the hutch is water tight and raised off the ground reducing the risk of damp. Check the inside of the hutch for water stains and if noted replace the panel/re-felt the roof to prevent further leaking. • If possible, reposition the hutch so that it faces south, preventing exposure to the coldest winds and ensuring it receives maximum sunlight. • Good insulation is vital. The easiest way to do this is using an old duvet, blanket or fleece throw and then cover this with a tarpaulin. It is also important to line the inside of the hutch with plenty of newspaper and hay. • You can provide an extra heat source in the form of a snuggle safe (can be found online), which is a plastic disc and once heated up for a few minutes in the microwave, will provide up to 10 hours of warmth. Ensure that it has some form of material cover to prevent direct contact with skin and therefore burning. • Cover any wire mesh at the front or sides of the hutch with clear Perspex. This allows the rabbits to see out but keeps them sheltered from the weather. • Water bottles and bowls are at risk of freezing if not adequately insulated, so it is vital to make regular checks to ensure that this has not happened. Preparation time: 15 minutes Serves: 4 INGREDIENTS 75g pinhead oatmeal (you can use rolled oats, but the steel cut pinhead variety are nuttier and less porridge-like) 1 tbsp soft brown sugar 250g raspberries 500ml double cream 4 tbsp honey, plus a little extra to drizzle 4 tbsp good Scottish whisky

eat a large frying pan over a medium heat. Add the oatmeal and the sugar then toast, stirring continuously until the sugar has melted and the oatmeal smells sweet and nutty. Pour on to a baking sheet lined with greaseproof paper and leave to cool. Meanwhile, puree 175g of the raspberries until smooth (reserve the best-looking ones). You can leave the seeds or pass through a sieve for a smooth puree. Whip the cream to fairly stiff peaks, then fold in the honey and whisky. Add three quarters of the oatmeal and all the puree to the cream then swirl through to give a ripple effect. Spoon into four glass dishes and top with the

WEST SUSSEX COUNTY COUNCIL

MORE CARE WORKERS ARE NEEDED

A

s winter approaches, the care sector in West Sussex will be under increased pressure especially this year with the additional challenges of the coronavirus pandemic. More care workers are needed across the care sector to keep elderly and vulnerable people safe and well. West Sussex County Council’s Adult Social Care’s Winter Plan sets out how West Sussex residents will be supported throughout the winter months. A key element of the plan is to make sure there are enough care workers to support those living in residential care homes and care for people in their own homes. In West Sussex there are currently an estimated 25,000 people working in adult social care, but many more are needed.

46

JANUARY/FEBRUARY 2021

The county council’s Proud to Care initiative is set up to help anyone thinking of working in care and particularly wants to hear from people who can work in care this winter. The Proud to Care website advertises hundreds of vacancies and contains information, guidance and case studies of others who now work in care. Amanda Jupp, Cabinet Member for Adults and Health, said: “Working in care is so rewarding and offers long term career opportunities for anyone motivated by helping and improving the lives of others. Christmas will be a difficult time for many people this year, so providing care to people that cannot be with their loved ones is, more than ever, vitally important. “Many ideal care workers come from many different backgrounds including retail, hospitality and customer services as they have the transferable people skills needed to be good carers. As we continue to be under restrictions to day to day life a number of people in these industries are facing redundancy so care work offers a great new opportunity.” Former shop manager Lesley now works as a Care Assistant in the Chichester area. She said: “Not only do I feel like I’m giving something back but the people I care for give so much to me too. I feel so valued and appreciated, I wouldn’t go back to working in retail now. To be a good carer you need to be friendly, versatile, quick thinking and enjoy conversation.” Local care providers have a range of vacancies offering full or part time hours and either temporary or permanent contracts. This flexibility is perfect for people looking for work to fit around their lifestyle and family commitments, particularly over Christmas.
