COMMENT

HOW THE WORLD HAS CHANGED

I

ts incredible how our way of life has changed so much in such a short space of time. However, this national emergency and ‘Lock Down’ has brought out the best of communities and highlighted the need for everyone to look locally for sourcing help and support. This drastic change in life has also created some unexpected benefits such as cleaner air and a reduced carbon footprint. And its how our communities and businesses adjust and adapt to this new world order that is key. After our in-house team started distributing the April editions we were of course disrupted by the Government ‘stay at home’ advice. Overnight, we had to adapt by using the Royal Mail Door-to-Door distribution service in order to ensure that all copies of the magazines were

distributed - which is how this edition has been delivered. In particular, I would like to thank our advertisers for supporting us in these extremely challenging conditions. I would also like to thank our readers who have risen to the challenge of supporting the weak and vulnerable with deliveries of food and medicines. And we hope our magazines can do there bit by highlighting what products and services are available locally. Although it is an extremely testing time for everyone, there is a lot to be said for being more locally centric, if only for the good of the planet. HORSHAM DISTRICT COUNCIL

HUBS GO FROM STRENGTH TO STRENGTH

I

n response to the Coronavirus outbreak, Horsham District Council, in partnership with existing and new organisations and volunteer groups, has been actively putting in place ways to help the District’s most vulnerable people by establishing Community Volunteer Hubs. As part of this initiative, the Council’s Community team has been calling all of its 2,500 Community Link and Health and Wellbeing customers to establish their needs and reassure them at this time. The Council is extremely grateful to the many community groups, parish and town councils and social media groups who have worked so hard to help them establish Community Volunteer Hubs throughout the District. There are now some 27 Community Volunteer Hubs in place. These Hubs are being organised and manned by volunteers, giving practical help such as going for shopping and medicines, and providing emotional support, with a friendly phone call for those who are isolated at home, amongst many other things. Commenting on this response for local level support, Horsham District Council Leader Cllr Ray Dawe said: “I wish to extend my sincere thanks to the literally hundreds of our residents and community groups who have come forward to give their time to both help set up Hubs in their local areas, and to volunteer to help vulnerable people at this time. My thanks go out too to the Council’s Community teams who have worked tirelessly to pull this vital initiative together logistically and in such a small amount of time. “This has been an enormously positive response which has taken a lot of hard work to achieve and an amazing level of progress has been made so far. “It is a heartrending time for many who are isolated either for their own safety, or the safety of others, and it is therefore greatly reassuring that reaching out and helping as many people as possible appears to be so well under way.

“I would still urge you to come forward if you feel you can spare your time to get involved.” We still have opportunities to volunteer across the whole District. Please register using the link below. Please don’t worry if you are signed up as a volunteer but have not yet been asked to help out. This is a rapidly changing situation, and we are currently gathering your information to help us organise and offer support as efficiently as possible over the coming months. We are still keen to hear from groups that may be supporting local residents in Colgate, Faygate and Slinfold. Can you volunteer? Get in touch If you are a volunteer or want to volunteer, please get in touch with us via the online form so that we can pass on your details at a local level. If you have organised or are currently running a new informal local coronavirus volunteer group, please get in touch so can ensure that all areas of the District are being adequately covered. We would appreciate it if you could let us know any details of how you are volunteering by emailing covid-19.support@horsham.gov.uk. COMMUNITY SUPPORT APPEAL

DONATE TO COVID-19 APPEAL

A

community support appeal has been launched to help with funding for the Horsham District Community Volunteer Hubs and community group Horsham Matters during the coronavirus crisis. The Community Volunteer Hubs have been established by local community groups, parish and neighbourhood councils, social media groups and Horsham District Council for the vulnerable of the Horsham District. The Hubs are manned by volunteers, giving practical help such as going for shopping and medicines, and providing emotional support, with friendly phone calls for those who are isolated at home. If you would like to help support the Horsham District Community Volunteer Hubs and other local organisations helping vulnerable people, you can now donate funds securely by text or online. The support appeal is possible thanks to registered charity The Hub Beeding and Donorfy www.donorfy.com who provide award-winning fundraising software to non-profit organisations across the UK. Your donations will be used to cover costs for food and medication for those in need as well as helping to stock food banks for those who need essential items. You can donate as little or as much as you would like. To give £20 by mobile, just text HUBS to 70085. Texts cost £20 (the donation) plus one standard rate message. Alternatively you can donate by debit or credit card by clicking on this link www.horsham.gov.uk/covid19appeal. Your data will be held in accordance with the Data Protection Act 2018. If you pay tax the value of your donation will be increased if you take the Gift Aid option. Funds are distributed proportionately to the

Community Hubs and a small number of local support organisations including Horsham Matters. The calculations for dividing the funds between the hubs is based upon size of the residential population they cover. The appeal is supported by Horsham District Council and donations are processed by The Hub Beeding and given directly to the Community Hubs and Horsham Matters where the help is needed. Commenting on the launch of this appeal, Horsham District Council Cabinet Member for Community Matters and Wellbeing Cllr Tricia Youtan said: “This is a very worrying and concerning time for many people and this appeal will provide additional help for our community. The community spirit which has grown so rapidly across our entire District in recent weeks to establish these hubs is amazing and this is an opportunity to pull together even more to help our volunteers deliver improved help to those who need it most. “I urge as many of you that feel able to start donating now, your donations will be well used and hugely appreciated.” Your donation is processed on behalf of the Horsham District Covid19 Community Hubs by The Hub, Beeding - registered charity number 1173420. People learn in different ways so it’s important to understand the differences so we can play to their strengths. Over the years I’ve learned that there are eight smarts, these show up in the salon in very interesting ways:

Spatial (picture smart) - the image users, the artists 4. Musical (music smart) - the tappers, movers and shakers 5. Bodily-kinesthetic (body smart) - they learn by doing 6. Interpersonal (people smart) - they work best in groups 7. Intrapersonal (self smart) - they need to think quietly and reflect 8. Naturalist (nature smart) - inspired by the outdoors When we understand how people learn we can support and nurture them in the right way which, for us, is very important as it keeps our team skilled, happy and motivated to do their best every day. It’s never too late to develop your smarts - something I’m keen to pass on to the team, after all, who doesn’t want to be smarter? HEALTH & WELLBEING

CONSTANTLY TIRED?

T

iredness and fatigue are fairly common nowadays. As we adopt a faster pace of life, we forget, or simply have no time to pause, rest and reflect. Constantly stretching ourselves to the limits can leave us fatigued, both mentally and physically. Here are some of the factors that can cause fatigue. Medical causes There is a vast number of medical conditions that can deplete energy, including anaemia, chronic fatigue syndrome/ME, diabetes, underactive thyroid (hypothyroidism) and coeliac disease. Fatigue can also be present when you experience extreme thirst, a change in bowel habits or weight-loss. Lifestyle causes The way we live our lives is constantly changing as we adapt to the demands of the contemporary world. As a result, we can exacerbate or contribute to fatigue by: • Drinking too much caffeine (coffee, energy drinks etc) and alcohol • Working long hours/night shifts, or long commutes • Not exercising enough • Not sleeping well or long enough • Eating an unhealthy diet which can lead to nutritional deficiencies • Having little time to relax and recover • Experiencing chronic stress Psychological causes Depression and anxiety are often linked to tiredness. People who suffer with mental health problems may have trouble falling asleep and sleeping through the night, which may lead to exhaustion. Not eating enough can also add to the problem as can doing no physical activity.

MAY/JUNE 2020

Nutrition and tiredness Not eating the right type of food or getting the right nutrients can also cause you to feel tired. A nutritious diet can address underlying nutrient deficiencies and allow the body to restore health, but it’s important to remember that there isn’t a magic bullet nor one nutrient that will make us healthy. It’s all about balancing your meals so that you’re providing your body with everything it needs to function at its best. A nutritionist can provide expert advice and support to help you make safe and effective changes to your diet and lifestyle in order to combat tiredness. But here are a few things you can start applying today: • Avoid refined carbohydrates such as sweets, cakes, chocolates, sodas. Apart from calories, they provide you with little or no nutritional value. Refined carbohydrates disrupt your blood glucose levels, leaving you hungry, tired and irritable. Instead, opt for complex carbohydrates with high fibre content such as beans, lentils, whole grains, vegetables and fruit. • Caffeine is a stimulant so it can “give” you energy, but too much caffeine, especially on an empty stomach, can leave you tired, and it can also affect your sleep. • Dehydration is one of the main causes of tiredness, so have at least 6-8 glasses of water a day. Any medical conditions should be managed by your doctor, but it’s important to look at fatigue from a holistic perspective and address anything that can be lacking in terms of movement, sleep, relaxation, and of course, food. www.annapinnock.co.uk

GUIDED BY NATURE

E

stablished in 1972, by Janet and Rodney Pratt, Bolney Wine Estate in West Sussex was one of the first, and remains one of the most beautiful, English wine estates. Janet and Rodney were pioneers. Guided by nature – the mild climate and the sandstone soil – they discovered the best varieties of grapes to grow in their eco-system. Today, their daughter, Sam Linter, heads up the family business having inherited her parents’ love and passion for making wine. Sam, along with her expert team, produces award-winning still and sparkling wines from our famous Pinot Noir and Estate Bacchus to our classic sparkling Bolney Bubbly and Blanc de Blancs. Bolney has become synonymous with quality wine in a contemporary style. At Bolney, they are more than just a vineyard and provide a great day out for all the family too. They offer a range of tours which include the Taster Tour, the Grand Gourmet Tour, and their brand new Dinner at Dusk Tour (which includes a 5 course tasting menu paired with wines). Whichever tour Please mention HORSHAM PAGES North when responding to adverts

you choose you will get to sample their awardwinning wines. And don’t forget their Vineyard Trail, which is designed for all the family to enjoy. After your tour, you can enjoy a wide range of seasonal dishes made using locally sourced produce and relax as you sip on a glass of your favourite wine on their stunning viewing balcony overlooking the ripening vines. Finish with a visit to their shop where you can take away a bottle or two to continue the experience at home. 2020 is a very exciting time for Bolney Wine Estate with lots of new developments underway. Launching this summer, Bolney are set to create a truly unique vineyard experience. Bolney Wine Estate are passionate about what they do; both at their vineyard and in the community, making award winning wines, and creating a haven of peace and tranquillity in the Sussex countryside where visitors can learn about the wine industry and enjoy some time away from their busy daily lives. RECIPE

STORE CUPBOARD SOUP Serves 4. Preparation time: 20 minutes Cooking time: Approximately 60 minutes fkdobafbkqp=

2 onions (red or white whatever is available) 2 carrots (could substitute sweet potato or parsnips or a mixture) 3 sticks celery, 2 cloves garlic, Olive oil 6 rashers of smoked streaky bacon (any bacon can be used; you could even use thick ham or smoked tofu) ½ a dried chilli, pinch of chilli flakes or ¼ tsp chilli powder ½ teaspoon dried thyme 200 g dried lentils, (you can use any lentils, even a mixture) 1 stock cube (vegetable or chicken) – Don’t worry if

you don’t have one there’s still plenty of flavour in the other ingredients. 1 x 410 g tin of any plain beans (cannellini / haricot / kidney / mixed etc. I added a tin of peas when I couldn’t get beans!) jbqela=

eel and finely chop the onions and carrots (or substitutes). Trim and finely chop the celery, and peel and finely chop the garlic. Dice the bacon, ham or smoked tofu. Heat a tablespoon of olive oil in a large pan over a medium heat, add the bacon, ham or tofu and fry slowly until crispy, then crumble in the dried chilli or add the chilli flakes or powder, and add the dried thyme, onion, carrot, celery and garlic. Cook gently with the lid on for about 15 minutes, or until all the vegetables are soft, then add the lentils and 1 litre water or vegetable stock. Bring to the boil and simmer until the lentils are soft. If you’re using mixed lentils, choose the longest cooking time listed on the packets (so if mixing green and red that would be the cooking time of the green lentils.) Drain the beans or peas and add them to the soup. Thin the soup with water if required. Bring the soup back to the boil and simmer for another 10 minutes. Taste and season as required. Ladle into bowls and serve with bread.

For something deeper chop the tops of 2 litre milk cartons. Be as creative as you like – just punch a couple of drainage holes in the bases. Garlic – If you can spare a couple of cloves of garlic you can plant them and grow your own garlic bulbs! Put the pots of planted garlic in full sun. They will sprout and send up a stalk. Chop this off and the bulb will then put all of its energy into growing large bulbs. Potatoes - Cut about one-inch of a chunk from a potato that includes 1-2 eyes. Let it dry out for a day or two then plant with the eyes facing upwards. Pumpkins and squashes – these grow fairly easily from seeds found in the centre of the gourd. Scallions / Spring onions - Cut off the last couple of centimetres of each onion leaving the bulb and roots. Plant in a pot, leaving a portion of each stem sticking out above the soil. ast spring, we saw several dogs which had ingested slug bait pellets and had to be rushed into the clinic for emergency treatment. Thankfully we managed to save all these patients and all have returned to full health. Slug bait pellets contain a substance called metaldehyde, which can be fatal in animals when ingested. Even very small amounts can cause significant poisoning and severe clinical signs can develop within 30-60 minutes. Animals that have possibly ingested slug bait pellets need to be presented as an emergency to a veterinary surgeon, so rapid action can be taken to save the animal’s life. Metaldehyde ingestion can lead to incoordination, muscle spasm/tremors, muscle rigidity, twitching, high temperature, increased sensitivity to touch and sound, seizures and death if untreated. Quick and intensive treatment is required to prevent the toxin from being fatal. Treatment involves the animal being heavily sedated or anaesthetised to control the seizures, but also to allow emptying of the stomach by lavage preventing further absorption of the toxin. The animal is then kept heavily sedated until stable and there are no signs of seizuring, once stable the level of sedation is slowly reduced. During this time the animal needs to be intensively monitored for any recurrence of the twitching or seizures. The first 24 hours are critical and if the animal can be kept stable through this period there, is a good chance they will make a full recovery. Sadly, not all cases of metaldehyde poisoning survive despite rapid and intensive veterinary treatment. We would recommend making sure that any slug bait pellets used or stored in your garden are pet friendly and in the case of ingestion veterinary care is sought immediately. SUSSEX GREEN LIVING

KEEP RECYCLING SINGLE USE PLASTIC

Pack crisp packets flat condensed in a shoe box.

S

ussex Green Living is appealing for help in the homes with single use plastic recycling during the covid19 crisis. Since 2012 Sussex Green Living with the help of lots of volunteers have been recycling specific single-use plastics. The materials are sent to and recycled by a company called TerraCycle. Carrie the founder of Sussex Green Living is appealing for help “Over the last year the volume of donations has grown 10 fold, we have a wonderful team of volunteers we call the SGL Wombles who were helping sort every Wednesday afternoon at the Quaker Meeting House”, she continues “We had to make the decision to stop those team sorting sessions last week”. Two volunteers are going to try to keep the lesser volume now being received, sorted and dispatched to TerraCyle. Helen Whittington, the onsite warden of the Quaker Meeting House will daily clean the handles on the bins in the meeting house garden, this being the main drop off location in the district (although there are six other parish locations and schools who also collect). Joy Carter, endearingly called chief Womble is going to remove the recycling to a remote location (using personal protective gear) and then trying to sort after 72 hours. Please mention HORSHAM PAGES North when responding to adverts

At this very difficult time Sussex Green Living is appealing to local collectors to try and collect and stockpile at home, or sort as seen in the photo above, then supply sorted making it quicker and easier for Joy to dispatch. Joy says “If we stop collecting these specific single use plastics, at the moment West Sussex County Council transport them to Germany or Holland to be incinerated as refuse derived fuel”, she continues “TerraCycle employ huge numbers of staff and are doing a brilliant job, if we suddenly stop dispatching materials to them staff will loose their jobs and the service will stop”. For further details visit: www.sussexgreenliving.co.uk/recycling-zone/singleuse/, this guide shows exactly what can and can’t be recycled www.sussexgreenliving.co.uk/sussex-greenliving-recycling-guide-2/.
