MID SUSSEX DISTRICT COUNCIL

VACCINATION CENTRE IN CLAIR HALL

M

id Sussex District Council (MSDC) has granted a licence to the NHS for use of the old Clair Hall building in Perrymount Road as a Covid-19 Vaccination Service. MSDC closed Clair Hall in September last year as it was deemed no longer fit for purpose. Since that decision the pandemic has worsened, and the vaccination programme is now a national priority. In this context, the Council received a request from the NHS to use the site as a Vaccination Centre, to which the Council readily agreed with the first vaccination in the building taking place in December of 2020. While detail of the full vaccination programme is still emerging, it is not known how long the NHS will need the building for. As a result, the Council has provided a flexible licence that can accommodate whatever the NHS needs.

8

MARCH/APRIL 2021

Councillor Jonathan Ash-Edwards, Leader of MSDC said: “Unfortunately, the Coronavirus pandemic has worsened considerably in recent weeks, but the vaccination programme gives reason to be hopeful. The District Council has reopened the Clair Hall building in Haywards Heath for the NHS to use as a COVID-19 Vaccination Service and has now agreed the license. I’m delighted that the first vaccination happened here in December and that people in our community are being protected. The NHS continues to ask residents to wait to be called forward for a vaccine, which will be offered to the most vulnerable first. Councillor Judy Llewellyn-Burke, Deputy Leader of MSDC added, “At this stage it is not clear how long the NHS will require the site for, so the Council has offered the NHS a flexible licence. This means the NHS will be able to use the building for as long as they need to complete the vaccination programme. When the NHS use comes to an end, we may again review the future use of the site informed by further public consultation to complement that done recently on the Haywards Heath Masterplan.” The Vaccination rollout is being run by the NHS and is the largest vaccination programme in its history. While it is being rolled out, it is vitally important that everyone follows the Government’s advice to stay at home, protect the NHS and save lives.

Chilli and bell peppers can both be grown in a greenhouse border, in a sunny spot in the garden or on a sheltered spot on the patio, although a greenhouse or conservatory will give you a heavier and earlier crop. Sweet peppers, especially the red ones, are very high in vitamin A and both red and green peppers are high in vitamin C. SEASONAL

Time For A Spring Clean

During the long, dark winter, when the sun is low in the sky and the perpetual cloud blanket obliterates its light anyway, dust and dirt are able to hide themselves very effectively in the corners, on the surfaces and even on the windows of our homes. By early spring all is looking brighter – in every respect. But those unforgiving shafts of light slide DFURVV WKH URRP VKRZLQJ XS WKH JUXEE\ ¾QJHU marks on the door, the ring marks on tables and the thick layer of dust on the mantelpiece. It must be time for a spring clean. An article in the Manufacturer and Builder magazine of 1872 (a ‘practical journal of industrial progress’) describes spring cleaning as “The season of general cleaning, when all the corners and closets are overturned and hidden things are brought to light”. Whilst period dramas such as Downton Abbey have inspired a new generation to revive traditional kitchen skills, it’s questionable ZKHWKHU WZHQW\ ¾UVW FHQWXU\ KRXVHKROGHUV ZLOO be tempted to adopt the cleaning methods recommended by the magazine, which include black-leading grates, whitewashing walls and scalding bedsteads. The Victorians may have excelled at spring cleaning but they certainly didn’t invent it. Some historians believe that the origins of this tradition date back to the ancient Persian New Year, the Iranian Norouz ZKLFK IDOOV RQ WKH ¾UVW GD\ RI spring. Iranians still practice ‘khooneh tekouni’ – which literally translates as ‘shaking the house’ – at this time. The Jewish feast of Passover is a religious festival that also hints at a possible origin

for spring cleaning. During the holiday the faithful are instructed to refrain from eating any leavened foodstuffs (‘chametz’). The Bible commands that even tiny crumbs must be removed from the house and this results in a ritual hunt for crumbs by candlelight during the evening before the holiday begins. Christianity has its own spring cleaning traditions. In Greece, householders clean everything WKRURXJKO\ HLWKHU EHIRUH RU GXULQJ WKH ¾UVW ZHHN of Lent, as a physical manifestation of Lent’s message of spiritual cleansing and renewal. For the ancient Chinese, the concept of New Year cleaning is associated with good fortune. They believed that people should sweep their ¿RRUV DQG FOHDQ WKHLU KRXVHV WR ULG WKHP RI DQ\ QHJDWLYH LQ¿XHQFHV WKDW PD\ KDYH DFFXPXODWHG during the last twelve months. Householders then locked up the broom for a few days to prevent sweeping away any good luck that might have entered at the turn of the year. When ancient cultures share such similar traditions it’s hard to say exactly when and where the idea of ‘spring cleaning’ originated. However, it’s obvious that the urge to clear away the cobwebs of winter and prepare for the summer months is hardwired into human DNA. With so many months since we’ve been allowed visitors in our homes, you’ll want to be gleaming ZKHQ WKRVH GD\V ¾QDOO\ UHWXUQ

HUMOUR

The Zen of Chickens by Derek Thompson

You can learn a lot about life from a chicken. Behind that beak and those golden eyes lies a creature bristling with poultry wisdom. Be in the moment. Chickens seem to have a very short attention span, unless they’re on the trail of a worm. However, they’re actually demonstrating an DELOLW\ WR GHWDFK IURP WKH VXSHU¾FLDO ZKLFK ° WR D FKLFNHQ ° LV DQ\WKLQJ LQHGLEOH Be curious about the world. Impressionable children the world over would have no qualms about devouring chard, lettuce or spinach (to name but three) if they had a chicken for a role model. And, being life’s gourmet connoisseurs, chickens will also happily try tomatoes, grapes, porridge, roast potatoes, bananas, raisins and spaghetti. Although someone we once met, who declared that she fed her hens leftover bacon and eggs, did, I feel, overstep the mark a little. The early bird really does get the worm. Although the slightly delayed bird may succeed in taking it off you, if you don’t pay attention. Opportunity not only knocks, it grabs too. Care for your environment. Once again, chickens lead by example. Whether it’s pulling up the weeds, providing some essential pest control or aerating the soil, chickens are constantly on the lookout for ways to contribute.
