Transforming Kingston’s Infrastructure Project (TKI) May 2012 – September 2013

Award finalists Two TKI projects nominated for the inaugural Kingston Business Awards: Commitment to the Community â—? Training and Development â—?

Kingston Community Furniture also nominated for Best Green Business

Thank you to our partners:

TLIs and TKI In early 2012, the Government awarded the last lot of grants to 74 local infrastructure organisations across England. The aim was to rationalise and transform in order to improve access to high quality advice and support for front line organisations, enabling them to be well-led, influential, responsive, efficient and less reliant on statutory of Lottery funding. Every local area delivered this in their own specific way.

What we promised to achieve in 18 months

1. Empower local organisations through improving their knowledge and skills

2. Progress the realisation of Kingston Community Hub

3. Enable local organisations to diversify and increase access to funding sources

Improving knowledge and skills Why? • Identified need (55% of staff in the voluntary sector still believe they don’t get sufficient training and development) • Capacity building is part of Kingston Voluntary and Community Sector Strategy • Dame Mary Marsh Review of Skills and Leadership found the charity sector wanting in 8 key areas

Kingston Community Hub A space for voluntary and community organisations to meet, learn and work together‌

How we have achieved it:

Memorandum of Understanding for the Kingston Community Hub Project signed on 13 Sept 2013

Leader of the Council, Councillor Liz Green, welcomes the work of TKI in supporting the development of a Kingston Community Hub

Further progress to date • Agreed principal of groups “pay no more than now” (collectively) • Inclusive package to be affordable • English Heritage “informally” squared (subject to formal planning process) • Refurbishment to happen regardless • Majority of original groups still on board

Issues to be confirmed • Length of lease? 10 or 20 years (5 year break clause)? Feedback? • Separation (in perception) between RBK and Hub, ensuring integrity of the project • Heads of Terms, details of lease, payment schedules • Input into refurbishment design • Advice giving friendly lay-out

Timetables and landmarks • RBK confirm refurbishment plans end September 2014 • All preparation work and planning consents by end March 2014 (RBK) • Space planning exercises before end November 2013 • Governance and building management agreed by end 2013 • Occupation presently timetabled for end October 2014

Back offices and ICT provision options appraisal finalised

We are confident that we can achieve reduced costs and an increased level and quality of services: • State of the art telephone system with fast access broadband • Printing/photocopying/scan/fax resource • Shared postage - Franking system • Possible shared HR advice. • Ways to reduce stationary costs

Beyond buildings • Back office services, technology and intellectual • Co-locational and cross-referral benefits • “Hothouse” for smaller groups • Utilising experience of Hub project to cascade out (spokes etc.) • A whole new future of sustainability and mutual co-operation for all

Our focus on funding Across the borough, many inspiring organisations run by dedicated individuals achieve extraordinary things with very limited resources. For many their future depends on securing small but vital amounts of funding to reach individuals and communities in need. That’s why we helped organisations start fundraising online and started an exciting new fundraising campaign for local groups.

How we have achieved it:

Online fundraising with Localgiving.com Provide local charities and community groups with the technology to raise money, awareness and support online.

Why Localgiving.com? Reduce dependency on grants Provide new sources of funding and support Engage with local donors You DON’T have to be a registered charity Receive Gift Aid regardless of size Match fund challenges
