Drum Corps lands 1st Runner-up by: Nicky Jatulan, Staff Writer THE Christ the King College (CKC)-High School Drum and Bugle Corps landed first runner-up on this year’s Calbayog City Drum Corps Competition held last September 4, 2016, Sunday at Calbayog City Sports Center. The band failed to defend its crown as the last year’s champion in the drum corps competi-

tion which was sponsored by the Local Government of Calbayog thru City and Arts and Culture Office (CACO). It could have been the third championship title for CKC after it got the first place on the year 2013 and 2015. On the year 2014, the group was also awarded with the first-runner-

up trophy. Although the band did not get the first place nor a special award, a lot netizens expressed their commendation on the group’s performance in the comment section of the video posted in the King’s Herald Official Facebook Page. The team is composed of the combination

of the junior and senior high school students, in which some of them are members already of the band since last year. In this year’s performance, the band played their rendention of the classic OPM song “Batang-bata ka pa” and “Tayo’y mga Pinoy” with its arrangment inspired by the Naval State Uni-

versity and Holy Infant College Drum Bugle Corp. Their entire performance lasted for around 10 minutes. The video of their full performance could be watched on the official Facebook Page of King’s Herald. As a recognition, the school got a cash prize and a trophy which was

received by Bro. Pablo Cui, OFM during the awarding ceremony. The CACO lifted the first rule on “No Trainer Policy”. Instead it will be implemented the following year. Aside from the drum corps competition, a possible cheer dance competition will be added next year.

CEAP-8 marks 75 years in General Assembly

SELECTED staff of the King’s Herald Publication successfully represented Christ the King College in the annual Division Schools Press Conference. Junior high school students garnered top spots in the different journalistic competitions which was held last September 26-27, 2016 at Calbayog City SPED Center. Participants for the Individual Categories were Charmaine Cabral for Pagsulat sa Agham at Teknolohiya who got 4th place, Erika Astilla for Science and Technol-

ogy Writing 4th place, Chiara Arpon in Editorial Writing 1st place, Archael Sabong for Pagsulat ng Lathalain 5th place, Kamilah Ortiz for Pagwawasto at Pag-uulo ng Balita 1st place, Trisha Mante in Sports Writing 4th place and Kaye Albaña in Photojournalism who got the 1st place. by: Cian Yrubay, Staff Writer THE 75th Anniversary of the Catholic Educational Association of the Philippines (CEAP) was the center of the theme of 2016 CEAP Region 8 Annual General Assembly. With the theme of “Toward 2021: New Spirit, New Fervour as we turn 75”, the annual regional assembly was held last July 23, 2016 at the St. Therese Educational Foundation of Tacloban, Inc. (STEFTI) Audito-

rium in Tacloban City. Christ the King College, as one of the members of the CEAP, was one of the host schools of this year’s assembly. An opening mass was held in the morning wherein the main celebrant was Bishop Isabelo Abarquez of the Diocese of Calbayog. The CKC Youth Symphony Orchestra (CKC-YSO) served as the choir during the opening mass.

Aside from performing during the mass, the CKC-YSO also entertained the delegates of the assembly with their classical rendition of their best songs. One of the highlights of the event was the presentation of the CEAP’s patron traveling icon: Christ, the Teacher. The icon shows Jesus Christ holding Book of the Gospels which symbolizes his teaching ministry.

7th Graders take NAT by: Trisha Mante, Assitant Editor-in-Chief

GRADE 7 students all over the country, including the students of Christ the King College- Junior High School Department (CKC-JHS), took the National Achievement Test (NAT) last July 15, 2016. This year’s examination was intended for the 6th graders of the previous school year but the education department post-

poned the administration of the examination twice. The Department of Education (DepEd) first scheduled the NAT for Grade 6 on March 10, 2016 and rescheduled it on June 17, 2016. Later on, the department released a memorandum scheduling the examination on the 15th day of July.

DepEd officials said that the postponed was due to operational and administrative limitations. The examination covered learning areas in basic education namely English, Math, Science, Filipino and Makabayan. Classes in the CKCJHS were postponed during that day to accommodate the examiners.

Christi Regian debaters join Visayas-wide cup by: Aidan Troy Gomez, Multimedia Editor MEMBERS of the Christ the King College (CKC) High School Debate Society joined a Visayas-wide debate tournament last September 16-18, 2016 in Cebu City. Ten teams represented CKC in the 8th Speak Up: Visayas School Debate Tournament led by the University of the Philippines Cebu. This is the second time that the school sent representative to the said competition. It was last 2015 that the An Lantugi Debate Society of Junior High School participated in the same debate tournament.

There were ten students, seven senior high and three junior high, who composed the 5 teams in the British Parliamentary format debate with each team having two students. One team was able to proceed to the first layer of the final round after they reach the Top 32 cut. It was the team CKC-B with senior students Thealyn Mae Oraza and Saimon Kent Monte de Ramos. Other students who joined the CKC’s delegation were Jhon Nino Binalla, Kent Vincent Alburan, Rey Anthony Bernales, Rhea Mae Picardo, Lance Mancol, Marte Dela

Pena, Chin Cabase and Aidan Gomez. There were 72 teams coming from the different schools in the Visayas who joined the said debate cup. The schools who participated were Cebu Science High, Mandaue Science High, USJ-R, USC, Springdale, Sacred Heart School-Hijas, Southcrest, SouthHill all from Cebu City. Siliman University from Dumaguete, Negros Oriental and Saint Therese Educational Foundation of Tacloban (Stefti) from Leyte also joined the competition. CKC’s team was the lone school who hailed from Samar.
