Legacy: That which you pass on to future generations • If you are intent on leaving an eternal legacy, it will be through the investment of your life in that of others for the Kingdom and Glory of God. • Anything less will crumble with time.

What Legacy are you leaving? • “…No one can lay any foundation other than the one already laid, which is Jesus Christ. If any man builds on this foundation using gold, silver, costly stones, wood, hay or straw, his work will be shown for what it is, because the Day will bring it to light. It will be revealed with fire, and the fire will test the quality of each man's work. If what he has built survives, he will receive his reward. If it is burned up, he will suffer loss; he himself will be saved, but only as one escaping through the flames.” (I Cor. 3:11b-15) Marketplace facts: Your legacy

What Legacy are you leaving? Three qualities you need to possess if you are to leave an eternal legacy through the lives of others

Marketplace facts: Your legacy

Quality 1 A willingness to allow God to superintend your agenda:

A willingness to allow God to superintend your agenda: • Dietrich Bonhoffer, whose life was cut short by martyrdom via Nazi Germany, put it this way, “We must be ready to allow ourselves to be interrupted by God…We must not… assume that our schedule is our own to manage, but allow it to be arranged by God.” Marketplace facts: Your legacy

What Legacy are you leaving? • “While they were worshiping the Lord and fasting, the Holy Spirit said, ‘Set apart for me Barnabas and Saul for the work to which I have called them’…Those who are led by the Spirit of God are sons of God.” (Act. 13:2a; Rom. 8:14)

Quality 2 A willingness to lose your life of self:

Marketplace facts: Your legacy

A willingness to lose your life of self: • “I would like to travel light on this journey of life, to be rid of the encumbrances I acquire each day…The most difficult thing to let go is my self, that self which, coddled and cozened, becomes smaller as it becomes heavier

What Legacy are you leaving? • “Let us strip off everything that hinders us, as well as the sin which dogs our feet, and let us run the race that we have to run with patience, our eyes fixed on Jesus the source and the goal of our faith. For he himself endured a cross…If anyone wants to follow in my footsteps, he must give up all right to himself, carry his cross every day and keep close behind me.” (Heb. 12:1, 2a; Lk. 9:23 - Phillips) Marketplace facts: Your legacy

Quality 3 A willingness to be vulnerable

Marketplace facts: Your legacy

A willingness to be vulnerable: • “To love at all is to be vulnerable. • Love anything, and your heart will certainly be wrung and possibly be broken. • If you want to make sure of keeping it intact, you must give your heart to no one…Wrap it up carefully round with hobbies and little luxuries; avoid all entanglements; lock it up safe in the casket or coffin of your selfishness.

Marketplace facts: Your legacy

A willingness to be vulnerable: • But in that casket-safe, dark, motionless, airlessit will change. • It will not be broken; it will become unbreakable, impenetrable, irredeemable…The only place outside of Heaven where you can be perfectly safe from all the dangers and perturbations of love is Hell.”

What Legacy are you leaving? • “And if my lifeblood is, so to speak, to be poured out over your faith, which I am offering up to God as a sacrifice--that is, if I am to die for you--even then I will be glad and will share my joy with each of you…I am glad to give you myself and all I have for your spiritual good, even though it seems that the more I love you, the less you love me.” (Phil. 2:17; 2 Cor. 12:15 – Living) Marketplace facts: Your legacy

What Legacy are you leaving? • QUESTION: As you review this past week, which way does the scale tip in terms of focus? • Has it been primarily on the eternal over the temporal?

Marketplace facts: Your legacy

What Legacy are you leaving? • If so, you are in the process of leaving an eternal legacy. • If not, the legacy you are passing on will be hay, wood, and straw. • Not real enduring in God’s purifying test of fire.

Prayer Focus • Father, In the name of Jesus, I surrender myself to walk in the Word in the marketplace. Your word living in me produces the Life in this world. • The word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path. It makes my way plain before me. • I boldly and confidently say that my heart is fixed and established on the solid foundation – the Living Word of God! Amen Marketplace facts: Your legacy

Learning, application and commitment: James 1: 22-25 • “Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. • Do what it says. • Anyone who listens to the word but does not do what it says is like a man who looks at his face in the mirror and, after looking at himself, goes away and immediately forgets what he looks like. • But the man who looks intently into the perfect law that gives freedom, and continues to do this, not forgetting what he has heard, but doing it - he will be blessed in what he does.” (NIV) Marketplace facts: Your legacy

Learning, application and commitment • One of the principles that I have learned from this lesson was … • I intend to apply this principle in my marketplace by: ….. • With the help of the Holy Spirit, I will begin applying this truth immediately. Marketplace facts: Your legacy

Jesus said: Take what I have given you and change the world!
