The non-profit Blaine County Cruisers announced recently they are offering a second round of scholarship monies to graduating high school seniors or alumni of any Blaine County High School. Four awards will be presented this year in the amount of $500 each to be used toward education at any two-year trade school or equivalent program, payable upon successful completion of the first semester of college.

The Blaine County Cruisers are a group of car enthusiasts who meet monthly in Chinook, Montana and are proud to be the organizers of the annual Blaine County Cruise where vehicles of all makes, models and ages Continued on page 2...

The highly social event has increased in popularity, so in recent years, the group decided to use any funds that aren't needed for the annual cruise toward educating youth in careers that are considered essential skilled labor jobs, many of such jobs employers find hard to fill.

There has been significant volatility in the agricultural markets over the last two weeks. Grains were hit with a bearish crop report that showed corn acres and production much higher than trade estimates. Wheat was pressured by corn along with declining world prices. Soybeans managed to avoid major pressure due to a bullish slant in the crop report showing acres were less than expected. Recent rains across the Midwest have given the corn and soybean crops a much-needed moisture boost.

The cattle complex also had sharp price moves. A devastating fire in a major beef packing plant in Kansas completely shut down the plant, removing about 6% of the nation’s cattle slaughter capacity. The sudden slowdown in slaughter is expected to back up cattle in the feedlots until they divert to other plants which will increase costs. Thus, live cattle futures were sharply lower on the expectation of slowing slaughter and heavier weights as cattle waited to be moved. The boxed beef, however, soared on the expectation of a sudden drop in beef production. Feeders followed live cattle lower initially but were able to recover most of their losses as the trade expects demand for feeders will be strong this fall as feedlot pens are cleared and corn production looks adequate.

The stock market fell on investor fears that the inverted yield curve increases the probability of a US recession.

Energies managed to work higher in choppy price action as tensions remain high about a supply disruption due to tensions in the Middle East. The US dollar pushed higher as global geo-political tensions create an uncertain investing environment, encouraging investors around the globe to the security of US treasuries, but the they have to buy the dollar before they can buy US products.

Passing Your Tests in Life

“Why, God, why?” It’s a common question, and one we often ask in the midst of hard times when we feel that we’ve been forsaken. But the truth is God is always with us, and He never leave us or forsakes us (Hebrews 13:5).

I’ve learned through my own trials and painful experiences that no matter what I’m going through, God is with me through it all and He will redeem it…He’ll make something beautiful out of it. This is true for every single person who puts their trust in God

Proverbs 3:5-8 says to “trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight. Do not be wise in your own eyes; fear the Lord and shun evil. This will bring health to your body and nourishment to your bones” (NIV).

Notice that verse 7 says “Do not be wise in your own eyes.” In other words, don’t ever think you’re smart enough to solve your own problems or figure everything out on your own. And verse 8 shows us that if we’ll do this—trust in God and follow His ways—it will bring health to our bodies and nourishment to our bones.

When I look back and think about what I was like years ago before I really got serious about growing up spiritually, I can honestly say I am a much different person today. Back then, I believed in Jesus and loved Him as much as I knew how to love Him, but I had every kind of character problem you could possibly have.

I was not a nice person even though I went to church every week and was on the evangelism team. The problem was I was religious but not Christlike!

But thankfully, this daily journey with God that I’ve been taking for more than 42 years now has brought radical transformation to my life in so many ways.

See, it’s the challenges we face that God uses to reveal the things in us that need to change, because we can’t deal with our weaknesses if we don’t know what they are. Then He works through them to transform us into the character of Christ little by little, one day at a time. (See 2 Corinthians 3:18.)

These situations are tests that God uses to help us become everything He has created us to be. Now, I’m not talking about major disasters or crises like sickness, the loss of a loved one or some other kind of evil trauma. The tests God gives show us ways we need to grow spiritually and prepare us to move forward in His plan for our lives.

For example, I used to be a very impatient person. I still get impatient sometimes, but I have grown a lot in this area throughout the years. I remember when I would get so frustrated all the time with people who were slow or situations that created inconveniences for me. After all, I had important things to do and was always in a hurry!

Well, God used clerks in stores to help me see my bad attitude and work patience into my soul. There was a time when it seemed that whenever I went to the grocery store, I’d get in the slowest line. The person in front of me would have items with no prices on them, so we’d have to wait for someone to look them up or the person checking out wouldn’t have enough money to cover their total bill and have to decide what to send back.

And I finally knew for sure that God had my number when I went to a department store one day and tried to buy something, but I couldn’t find a clerk to take my money. I went from slow clerks to no clerks!

I realized in these situations that the best thing I coul do was decide to have a good attitude and enjoy waiting. Because in God’s school of life, we don’t really fail; we just get to keep taking the same test over and over until we pass it.

The good news is that when we pass our tests, there’s a promotion coming! We’re changing and being prepared to do bigger and better things for Christ in this life, and we’ll have much more peace and joy in our everyday life.

So, what bugs you? What really grates on your nerves and causes you to get frustrated, stealing your peace and joy? I want to encourage you to remember Proverbs 3:5-8 and use it as a practical guide in these situations. Let the tests you take make you better—more like Christ—and keep moving forward in every good plan God has for your life! ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

DEAR DAVE,

I’ve got a couple of friends who were advised by their financial planners not to open college savings accounts for their kids. Their planners told them this would count against their children’s ability to receive financial aid and assistance when it’s time for college.

Apparently, these planners told them to put the money into their own retirement accounts. It’s my understanding, however, that both the child’s and the parent’s financial situations are looked into when determining financial aid. Can you please shed some light on this?

What kind of moron gives financial advice like this? You don’t tell people not to save money for something, just so they can pretend they’re poor!

Save whatever money you can, and send your kid to school.

Why is that such a difficult concept to grasp? People need to stop looking for tricks and shortcuts, because there aren’t any that will be beneficial in the long run. I’m not going to pose as broke— fraudulently—to get financial aid for my kid. That’s ridiculous!

I hope I wasn’t unclear.

Overheads Are Fixed!

What would you have to do to increase profit in a business where you couldn’t control costs? You’d have to increase production per animal, increase the number of animals you carry and hope for higher prices.

These are the strategies most ranchers have followed, and Universities have recommended, for generations. It’s a logical approach if you believe that you can’t do much to reduce costs, especially overhead costs.

The biggest costs on most ranches are overhead costs. Overheads are costs that don’t change very much as the units of production in an enterprise change. Overhead costs include all land and labor costs (e.g. rent, salaries & benefits, and equipment related costs) and account for 60-80% of all of the costs on most ranches. Economists call these “fixed costs.” At the Ranching for Profit school we contend that the economists are wrong. We argue that the word “fixed” implies that these costs can’t be changed.

Thousands of Ranching For Profit graduates, who have dramatically increased profit by drastically slashing overheads, know that we are right.

But for the vast majority of ranchers who haven’t been to the Ranching For Profit School the economists are right!

Overheads are fixed unless you change the fundamental structure of your business. Consider the example of a March-calving cow-calf enterprise in an environment with severe winters and no green, growing grass until sometime in April. The cow’s highest nutritional requirement matches the lowest pasture forage quantity and quality of the year. Our traditional answer? Feed hay. The hay we feed is a direct cost, a cost that changes directly as the number of units change. But the equipment and labor costs involved in feeding the hay are overheads.

We can tweak the efficiency of our March-calving cows all we want.

We can improve our grazing program so that we make use of stockpiled forages well into the winter. But as long as our production schedule is out of sync with the forage cycle, we will need hay, and therefore we will incur the overhead costs of feeding hay. Unless we change our production schedule we will not be able to reduce overheads in any meaningful way. They are fixed in place by our production strategy. It doesn’t matter if we have 50 cows or 500, feed 100 bales or 1,000, we incur most of the overheads just by owning the tractor in the first place.

If we’ve been putting up our own hay, we can cut our overheads by contracting with someone else to put it up for us or by eliminating the hay enterprise and buying in whatever hay we need. Changing a Marchcalving cow-calf enterprise to a seasonal stocker or custom grazing program would also be a way to slash the overheads. Either way, if we want to make significant changes in overheads, we need to make changes at a very deep level in your businesses. When we change at a structural level the overheads become easy to cut. Unless we change the structure, most overheads are fixed.

Let me be clear. I am not recommending that you make any of these changes. But if overhead costs are 60-80% of the costs in your business, and those costs are fixed, aren’t you in a fix too?

Buck Antelope Shot West of Glasgow, Wardens Seeking Information

Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks Region 6 game wardens are seeking any information regarding an antelope buck that was shot and left to waste west of Glasgow. The incident occurred on BLM land along the old bentonite railroad bed road about 9 miles west of where the road splits off the main Bentonite road.

A local hunter reported the dead antelope buck on Aug. 21, indicating the location. Upon investigating the scene, Warden Todd Tryan observed a small hole in the body cavity that indicated the antelope was wounded and left to waste. Due to the level of decay, Tryan estimated that the incident occurred sometime around the middle of August.

The archery season for the 900-20 antelope license began on Aug. 15, but rifle hunting for antelope does not begin until Oct. 12. “The wound was clearly not caused by lawful archery equipment,” indicated Warden Tryan.
