Thalgo Ambassadors Travel to HQ Thalgo Ireland ambassadors recently jetted off to the South of France to train in Thalgo HQ with international Trainer Joanne Mazzitelli. The ladies also got a guided tour of the laboratory where they watched their products being trialed and tested. Retail Excellence Ireland (REI), Ireland’s largest retail industry body, has just announced the finalists for REI National Store of the Year 2012. Thirty finalists, including Fuschia Make-Up in Drogheda, will have to wait until Saturday 3rd November 2012 to find out who will be awarded the REI National Store of the Year 2012. The National Store of the Year 2012 is part of the REI Awards which were established in 1997 to promote best practice standards in the Irish retail industry. As part of the selection process, all store entrants were visited by a Mystery Shopper, with those exceeding demanding service and standards criteria making it to the Top100 Stores. Gillian Moore Brady, owner of Fuschia Makeup says “We are absolutely thrilled with this achievement. We are delighted that our store is up there with the best in the country and we really hope to win the overall prize. However, none of this could ever have happened without the massive following that we have. As always, we are so grateful to all of our customers who continue to shop with us, day in, day out! Helsinki CEN TC 409 Meeting The CEN TC 409 is the European Committee for Standardisation in the beauty industry. It is working with representatives of Europe‘s beauty industry to achieve a standard that everyone can agree on. This European standard provides requirements and recommendations for the provision of professional beauty salon services. These services relate to the delivery of beauty treatments regardless of where the service is delivered. The standard provides requirements and recommendations for the delivery of safe & effective beauty treatments. Recommendations are provided regarding client management ensuring client safety regarding any beauty treatments. The delivery of beauty salon services are limited to the boundaries of the qualification of the individual beauty therapists obtained through an accredited education provider. The third meeting of CEN TC 409 was kindly hosted by the Finnish standards body SFS in the beautiful city of Helsinki, June 7 & 8, 2012. The meeting was well attended with up to twenty-six delegates from over ten European countries participating in the meeting. A full list of treatments that are provided by beauty salon services is to be considered as part of the standard. Work on the development of a draft standard was progressed on day two with experts dividing onto smaller drafting groups which addressed the following: DG1 - Competence of therapists and delivery of treatments – Beautician DG2 - Facilities and operations including health & safety – Salon DG3 - Client service - to address general hygiene & review and improvement of service. Overall there was considerable progress made on agreeing the content of the proposed standard. The 4th meeting of CEN TC 409 is scheduled for November 2012 where it is hoped the work will be sufficiently progressed to officially register the work item with CEN. It is planned to have the document ready for enquiry stage before the end of 2013. 8•••••Beauty Professional Ireland

CND Takes Part in Celebrity Salon 3 Celebrities from TV3‘s Celebrity Salon were trained in CND Shellac and certified in the nail disciplines recently. They were then let loose on the general public in St. Stephen‘s Green Shopping Centre. Each episode has 3.4 million viewers. The contestants this year include Glenda Gilson, Julian Simmons of UTV and Nikki Grahame of Big Brother fame.

1 Laura’s Lymes Treatment Fund Committee

Family‘s Bid for Help for Lymes Disease Sufferer Laura Cleary is a twenty-four year old, from Thurles, Co. Tipperary. She has been diagnosed with Stage 3 Chronic Lymes Disease. Lymes Disease is a bacterial infection passed to humans through a tick bite. Symptoms are similar to MS, Chronic Fatigue Syndrome or Parkinson’s disease, and can even result in paralysis and loss of sight. She has been suffering with the debilitating symptoms of this disease for over two years, struggling for a diagnosis in this country, where the health professionals are not Lyme aware and are unable to diagnose or treat her. Laura has been diagnosed by the BCA Clinic in Germany as testing positive for Lymes Disease while at a conference on the disease held by Lyme aware Irish charity Tick Talk Ireland. Laura requires a wheelchair for mobility and is suffering greatly. Treatment is estimated to cost between €70,000 – €100,000. Laura’s parents have spent enormous amounts of money in the past two years with consultant costs and incorrect diagnosis. They are funding her journey to Germany and initial treatment. Acquired Brain Injury Ireland Host Fundraising Fashion Show ‘The Style of Dublin’ As the Dublin Fashion Festival takes place this September, Irelands leading provider in community based neuro-rehabilitation services, Acquired Brain Injury Ireland, are hosting a charity fashion show fundraiser ‘The Style of Dublin’, in an effort to raise much needed funds for the organisation; working to rebuild lives shattered by the sudden and unexpected trauma of an acquired brain injury. ‘The Style of Dublin’ will showcase some of Ireland’s top models and celebrities, who will take part in the event. Former Miss Ireland Emma Waldron and supermodel Alison Canavan will take to the catwalk, along with the cast of reality TV show Dublin Housewives. Dragon’s Den judge Niall O’ Farrell puts himself in the judging spotlight, modelling alongside actor George McMahon. Tickets for ‘The Style of Dublin’ fashion show are available from €35 with all proceeds going directly to help rebuild lives, shattered by the trauma of an acquired brain injury resulting from a road traffic accident, fall, assault, sports injury, or stroke. Laura Hilliard Brady is the co-owner of Walmer College and Holistic centre and has been teaching different types of massage techniques for the past 20 years. Before embarking on a career as a massage therapist and tutor, Laura’s passion lay elsewhere when she left school to join the world of dance, but it was only when her mother set up ‘The Natural Living Centre’ that Laura was introduced to massage for the first time. Today, Laura has discovered a way to combine her passions in life and make her business stand out miles from the rest… put massage to the music of Riverdance. We got such a great reaction and ended up on TV3 the next day.

When did you first get involved in the beauty industry? When my mother set up ‘The Natural Living Centre’, I used to hear all of the students talk about the class and it got me excited about it. The first class was like I had come home, I found something that I just fell in love with and a way to express myself through movement and touch. After five years of practicing Holistic and Deep Tissue Massage, I really started to listen to my clients and realised that when they said something long enough, it would become part of their stress. The cells in their bodies would listen to our thoughts and manifest stress or tension in these areas. I found this really fascinating. How did you start to incorporate music to your therapies? My dance background has been the foundation of me exploring music and allowing my hands dance around the body. Massage to me is simply a dance between two people, using inspiring music that can create a healing vibration. I feel the beat and the rhythm and transfer it to my client’s body. The client in turn allows the their body go with it and releases and lets go of tension or emotion. I have choreographed massage to different music over the years and performed it with treatments. I was asked to do a demonstration of posture and massage at the RDS for ITEC a couple of years ago, and had students asking if I could teach or guide them in the same way. I was also at a conference in 2008 and wanted to do something to make our college stand out; this is when I decided to 16•••••Beauty Professional Ireland

Where have you taken your unique massage techniques since? Recently BBC 1 Radio DJ Greg James brought me over to do the massage on him live on air and he loved it, he asked why it took four years to meet me! The video has already got 60,000 hits. I’ve also had the opportunity to work with the Beyonce crew in the 02, The Rose of Tralee festival for four years running and part of the ME Trust conference every year for the past six years. Do you believe being different is important to get noticed? Being different will definitely get you noticed but I think passion and enthusiasm is infectious. I know this because I have seen students being inspired by these attributes and going on to do so well in their own work, whether they’re opening up their own colleges or working from their own homes, taking responsibility for their own path and journey along the way.

The brand was the brainchild of Bill Kenny who grew up with the belief system that there was something very special about the bog as he had witnessed his mother using it in all kinds of ways. This belief system was further cemented by the discovery of bog bodies and the near perfect condition that they were in. In addition, on a trip to Eastern Europe he purchased a book that described the therapeutic uses of peat in skin care. This gave him the idea to have his own bog tested to see if it would have the nutritional content needed for skincare. It‘s based in Tullamore in Co. Offaly How do your products fit into a salons treatment schedule/menu? We have created specially designed ÓGRA salon treatments to accompany our product range. They offer a client something that is not readily available in every Spa/Salon setting. They offer very good value for money as the initial investment into the range is excellent and the cost of the product to be used in individual treatments gives the Salon owner an extremely competitive profit margin. In addition, the range is a tight spectrum range i.e. one set of products is suitable for all skin types therefore allowing the salon owner to get really good value for their initial investment. Is it suitable for an all over body treatment? Yes, we have different peat masks that can be applied as part of an all over treatment. The plain unscented mask is the one used on the face only. We have a specially designed body wrap treatment which is very popular particularly for treating skin problems. What are the brands USP? Natural, Peat is organic, an Irish treasure, Youthful skin, it can transform your skin. What is the secret behind the brand? In the rich bog eco-system, plants, grasses flowers etc have been transformed over thousands of years into a natural mixture of vitamins, minerals and other nutrients for your skin. Is it suitable for sensitive skin types? Yes, the product can be used on all skin types. The peat face and body mask is the signature product and is 100% organic. This product is ideal for sensitive skin types when used in a consistent manner. As it has very strong anti-oxidants in it, it’s a very effective detox and also an excellent transporter of nutrients throughout the body. It stimulates the blood flow to come to the outer surface of the skin. After a couple of treatments, it’s very noticeable; the improvement in a person’s skin. How long will it take a therapist to train and become familiar with the brand? One day’s training is sufficient. They will be educated on the key aspects of the science, followed by product knowledge, followed by hands on training. What is the recommended retail cost of the products to the client? It ranges between €19 for cleanser/toner to €35 for anti-ageing. The remainder of the facial range retails at €30. How important is it to keep updating the brand, its packaging and retail in the current climate? Very important, We believe we have an excellent brand that delivers on its promises primarily because of the science within it. It is important for us to keep educating people on the science and to that end we now have a peat scientist that works in the role of advisor to us. Going forward, she will be available to explain the science of the bog and how we have captured it in our skincare range. What are your plans for the future? Our plan is to continue to perfect our range, to enhance the characteristics of each product by looking more closely at the science in it. In addition, we currently have a number of products in R & D that we expect to start launching in 2013. We are also keen to receive feedback on our products from salon/spa owners and understand how we can more adequately support their services.

Proof’s in the Pudding Anne McDevitt looks at the ground roots of the beauty industry - good quality ingredients. The cosmetics industry is so fast paced that it helps if you have passion propelling you to keep up! It’s a lucky life that lives through passion and one of mine is the subject of skincare and ingredients. Endless recipes and formulas of skin enhancing vitamins, herbs, and plant extracts. Not to mention evolving pharmaceuticals that can mimic the very best in nature to reproduce a concentrated action for greater results. This passion stretches back to the 1980‘s; when creating masks and inventing essential oil blends for specific skin problems, progressed to cosmeceuticals, which by the early 90’s was a little understood term. Later training as an herbalist included pharmacology and phytochemistry. I developed a greater understanding of the science of herb interactions, flower and plant extracts used in cosmeceuticals and their effects on the skin. Centuries old ingredients that are used in skincare are now being scientifically re-researched with similar conclusions to those the ancients‘ recorded! It is true, however, that with each piece of research there is new evidence of the mechanism through which a particular ingredient works, and this is where it gets interesting for skincare professionals. Acids for example, have been used in skincare since long before Cleopatra bathed in milk, which is laden with lactic acid, a mild skin exfoliant. Recent market trends have forced many brands to introduce peels which may not live up to the standard which professional peels should reach. In many cases brands simply cannot afford to invest in the best acids. Quality ingredients do not come cheap! Professor of physiology, membrane biology of UC Davis, Jie Zhang recently referred to glycolic acid as “the most effective skin 26•••••Beauty Professional Ireland

enhancer in the cosmetics industry”. His work highlights new information about glycolic acid and its effect on the cellular pathway in keratinocytes called the TRPV3 ion channel located in the cell wall. His work improves the understanding of how the use of glycolic acid leads to the exfoliation of dead cells to reveal fresher, younger looking skin. Up to now for example, Retin A; Retinoic acid or Vitamin A acid, was the ingredient that “scientists” believe to be capable of altering the function of the skin. Interestingly the ingredients list includes ‘skin stimulants’ “such as urea, lactic acid and vitamin E.! But Eminence has developed a natural alternative retinol complex with added stem cells! A breakthrough, because collagen loss is now visible in women as young as late as the 20’s into the early 30’s. More importantly there are very few ingredients that alter collagen levels in skin aged 50 and over. A clinical study of the natural retinol alternative showed collagen levels to be improved by 25% in just 6 days as opposed to 17% with conventional retinol. Stem cell research remains prominent as the depletion of stem cells is deemed one of the primary causes of ageing. A clinical trail of “PhytocellTec” stem cells by Eminence showed 100% of participants said they saw a dramatic and visible decrease in wrinkle depth. By harvesting stem cells into skincare we can combat chronological ageing by improving elasticity and firmness from the outside in. If you are looking at new brands this Autumn, consider that the trend for skincare from “professional only” brands increased by 4 % in Europe last year. Keeping up to date with the latest demands, does not always mean looking for a new brand, it may just mean revisiting ingredients you are already using. Regular updating with your brand through training is like shopping in your wardrobe – you never know what you might find to fall in love with again!

A Good Aura

We spoke to the lovely Claire Kenny of Sunaura Distribution Limited, a family business located in Kilcoole, Wicklow. Sunaura is the sole Irish and UK distributor of Mila d‘Opiz Swiss Beauty – comprising of Skincare for men and women, bodycare, suncare and make-up. Sunaura is also the sole Irish distributor of PhD Safewax, a global leader in hygienic waxing. In addition, the company supplies theatrical make-up to colleges, professional make-up artists, and the stage and film industries How long has Sunaura been in business and where did the idea for the business come from? In late 1981, my parents decided to start a business that could be run from home, which meant that Mum was around when my brother and I came home from school. So they started by supplying saunas and sunbeds (which we no longer do). The business has totally changed since then and in response to customer requests we branched into skincare, make-up and salon supplies. We were very lucky to discover Mila d’Opiz, and to be given the exclusive distribution for Ireland. We love the products ourselves, and our customers regularly tell us that it is the most effective brand they have ever used. Teachers have even told us that their students don’t break out when using it for facial training, unlike with some other brands. In the last three months, we have also been offered the distribution rights to the UK, which we are very proud of. We’re a small family business and we try very hard to give a personal, helpful and fair service. It’s usually the same person who takes the orders, processes them and packs them up for shipment, so customer requests don’t get lost between departments. We like to get to know our customers and we do our very best to make sure they are all happy with

us. We’re also a very ethical business; we do reduce, reuse and recycle wherever possible. We care about supplying top quality products but at reasonable prices. You are another recession proof beauty business that inspires us all, how have you done it? As my grandmother would say, we “cut our cloth to suit our purse”! Do your staff personally train in make-up application and skincare? We have a beauty therapist on staff who specialises in training our customers (and us!) on our skincare and waxing products. The make-up industry, and special effects in particular, is so rapidly evolving that we like to hire specialists in specific make-up areas. We personally train alongside our customers and also keep ourselves up to date with all the training courses and information from our suppliers. We think it’s very important that our customers also keep up to date with the latest products, so they can market their businesses and themselves more effectively, which is why we are running some detailed training seminars for Mila d’Opiz customers during September, to inform them more about the active ingredients and product use. During October, we are hiring a film make-up artist to teach some of the latest special effects techniques to our makeup artistry teacher customers. Next year we intend to run a series of make-up artistry training days Have you been to any recent trade shows like IMATS or Professional Beauty in Dublin? Do you find them informative? I was at IMATS in February and I did find some of the seminars very interesting and educational, especially a prosthetic demonstration by Niall Gorton. We’re usually

But it is certainly less stressful to attend rather than be an exhibitor, for a change!

Shima‘s Story Shima Mistry is a freelance Make-up Artist and Body Painter based in Dublin. She has done body painting projects for Google, Danone, The Department of Education and the Secret Boudouir to name but a few! She recently won the first Irish Body Painting Competition on the 27th of July 2012 which was on at the MAD Art Gallery. The competition was sponsored by FaceFX Make-up and is affiliated with the World Body Painting Competition held in Austria each summer. The organisers are proposing a yearly event in Ireland so it will be great for the profile of body painting in Ireland for the future. Shima‘s body painting demo at the Professional Beauty show will showcase her use of the tools of bodypainting: sponge application, blending paints, airbrush application and finepoint brush application.

Raquel Guirro Raquel Guirro has worked as a bodypainter and make-up artist in the film industry for many years, including as part of the Oscar-winning special effects team on the acclaimed film Pan’s Labyrinth. She has competed at the World Bodypainting Festival in Austria for the past five years, recently receiving 4th place in the Special Effects Facepainting category. Her work seamlessly combines advanced bodypainting techniques with breathtaking special effects. Raquel lives in Barcelona where she works as a make-up and special effects technician. For the show Raquel will be doing a fantasy design, together with some special effects and fashion elements. The demo time on stage is limited to thirty minutes so Raquel will mainly prepare this in advance and use the time slot on stage both to finish the design and also to explain the various steps and processes involved in the overall work.

Client Data Handling Our IT expert John Donnelly looks at the importance of client data handling and why getting accurate data from your clients is paramount these days.

When it comes to running a successful business, data is the new currency. Accurate and detailed information on your clients is vital to ensuring your Salon’s success. If you install a Salon Management System in your salon it will enable you to collect client data, compile it into comprehensive, meaningful reports and use it to learn about and understand your clients spending habits which in turn will allow you to target marketing campaigns in the right direction. Computers need to be fed accurate information on an ongoing basis in order for them to produce accurate information at the other end. This means that extra care and attention has to be taken with clients to ensure their information is accurate. To make the information gathering process easier, some software systems will prompt you if they are missing any information on the client’s record. Some will even print a list every morning of all the clients due in today and the information missing from each client. Getting a client’s mobile number is obviously a must but their email address is also very important. Other information such as his or her occupation, how they heard about the salon, birthday details and even what refreshment they like when they come in to the salon are nice details to have and can be used at any stage to target marketing campaigns towards specific groups of clients. Accurate client data is probably a salon’s 52•••••Beauty Professional Ireland

most valuable asset. Without it, you are watching clients leave the salon after a treatment and hoping that they will come back. With accurate client data, you have the tools available to you to track that client, to see whether they come back to the salon and if so, how long it took them to come back. If the client hasn’t come back within a set period of time, you have the capability of sending him or her a text message or email just to remind them that you are still there and are still interested in their business. One example of the power of marketing came from a salon of ours who targeted all clients who were salon regulars but haven’t been in the salon in the last six months and have no future appointments. The marketing search function threw up just over 300 names which the salon texted offering a 10% discount on their next visit and 100 free points should they join the salon’s loyalty scheme. Within 24 hours, forty former clients booked an appointment and all joined the loyalty scheme. A quick calculation based on the salon’s average bill worked out that the salon made €2,500 in additional revenue. Not only that, but they will get the repeat business from those forty clients because they signed up for the loyalty scheme. Your clients are your business. Make sure you know everything about them and above all, make sure you can stay in contact with them. Your business depends on it.

BPI spoke to Tatyana Chemerynska of Rouge Salon, Ranelagh about her passion for Nimue Skincare. When did you first start using Nimue? We introduced Nimue to our salon since we opened in 2005. As a beauty therapist, I was looking for a product that can deliver results, keep skin rejuvenated and is suitable for even very sensitive skin type. I went about testing and trying Nimue products myself. I saw first hand how effective they were. So the decision was made easy to have Nimue skincare in our salon. Which sequence of treatments would you recommend for clients to keep aging at bay? Have a daily routine in the morning and evening (this should always be recommended by an experienced beauty therapist), sun protection is a must and regular rejuvenating facials. If you want to stay on the right skincare track you have to get a proper assessment from a beauty therapist. Do you have a lot of repeat clientele for the rejuvenation facials? All of our clients are addicted to Nimue facials and always come back as

I would advise that clients always use sunscreen and a high factor of 30 every day on their face, neck and hands. I advise them to do this even in the winter. The Autumn Fairy Step 1. Push up the cuticle and remove the skin from the nail properly. Remove the dust with Crystal Nail‘s dust brush and after that use the Crystal Nails Nail Prep. Apply the Crystal Nails new Butterfly form to create extra long Stiletto Nails and make the nail extension with Crystal Nails Clear Powder.

Step 2 Shape the negative of the smile line with nail bed extension, after this bend the nail with the C curve bending tweezers. Step 3 Paint the background colors with colored acrylic powders.

Step 4. Fill up the free edge with Crystal Nails Clear Acrylic. Step 5. Give a nice shape to the nails and remove the dust. Step 6. Create the leaves. Use the Crystal Nails colored acrylic powders 44 (orange), 16 (yellow). Step 7. Use purple acrylic paints to heighten the contours. The Rouge

Salon Spy decided that it was time for a defuzzing and a decent manicure. We sent her to Rouge Salon in Ranelagh for some pampering. For perhaps two or three days this “summer” I was lulled in a false sense of security that we were actually getting a summer! So I felt it was about time to address some badly needed personal grooming, and to stop putting it off. My nails were in worse than normal condition after a typical Irish winter deficient in Vitamin D. I was booked into Rouge Beauty Salon for a half leg and bikini wax and a Biosculpture three week manicure. The less said about my legs and bikini area the better. Tetyana Chemerynska who carried out my waxing was very professional and friendly, she explained to me the different waxes that I would be getting and the difference between the wax used for my legs as opposed to the delicate bikini area. On my legs a Harley gold strip wax would be applied and taken off with strips whereas on my bikini area Perron Rigot hot wax was applied. Its malleable form meant that it was applied easily and stayed hot as it opened the pores which made the eventual hair removal (although being a coward I was still bracing myself!) a much less painful experience than usual. All in all though you could never describe waxing as pleasant (unless of course you’re 60•••••Beauty Professional Ireland

a “Christian Grey” type of gal!). Tetyana with her professionalism and easy manner made it certainly a more bearable experience After a few minutes to collect myself, I headed downstairs to where I was getting a Biosculpture three week manicure done. I was excited as I’ve never had anything more adventurous than a French Manicure. I’m a bit of an enthusiastic amateur when it comes to nails. I collect an array of colourful polishes and find it an almost zen like therapy when applying them to my own nails. So I always look on in with an envied appreciation when I have a professional doing it. My nail technician Ireen Semenenk is a lovely girl who showed great patience with me as I almost ruined her fastidious work on a number of occasions clumsily bumping off the nail drying device! I left with the most wonderful nails which lasted for weeks and which everyone commented on for ages. My verdict? Rouge Beauty Salon is a great establishment with very friendly and competent staff who certainly made me feel very relaxed and comfortable while there and I wouldn’t hesitate returning to get more treatments in the future.

Winner Takes All Awards are important to every business and individual in the beauty industry. They are a mark of quality, an endorsement of expertise and they can be a great accolade for an individual. BPI‘s Editor Lucy Earley looks at the value of winning an award or competition. Beauty awards - are they really that important? Basically, yes they are. They can add a great deal of value to your brand, and in many different ways. Several studies delving into the psychology of buying have found that prospective consumers are drawn to a product which has gained an industry standard award. It can be an important factor in choosing your brand over the competition. Whatever your beauty speciality happens to be, go out and actively seek awards. Success Breeds Admiration Awards create a good buzz in the office. Winning an award can boost employee morale immeasurably. Sales staff statistically sell more due to an enhanced belief in a newly awarded product. Our minds can’t process a negative so if staff don’t fully believe in the merits of a product then sometimes sales can stagger. Gaining an industry or consumer award in Ireland can definitely freshen up a sales campaign with renewed vigour and enthusiasm. If you have won an award you reserve the right to become an award-winning business. For example, Tan Organic won Best Tan awards from The Irish Times, Mummy Pages and the Sunday World. Awards Attract Awards Awards can also create that most important of PR tools - word of mouth. A domino effect is often created resulting in the possibility of winning more. Personal Belief But are you technically a brand if you’re a freelance Make-Up Artist or a Nail Technician? If you’re promoting a service by carrying out treatments on individuals then you are a brand with your own distinct name and branding. I wouldn’t be a big fan of Posh Spice (not so much for her offences against music but mostly because she really needs to smile more!) but, she is an excellent example of an individual becoming a brand. You have to have a strong belief in your product, in your own worth as a person. If you are a Make-Up Artist or Nail Technician you need to be a hard worker and possess self-belief before you enter a competition for the first time. How to Do It How do you find the best awards that will suit your business? Simply search the web and you will find what you need. Magazine awards e.g. Irish Tatler’s Spa Awards, the Image Beauty Awards and blog awards like beaut.ie Awards are excellent examples of how to target consumers. Industry awards such as the Professional Beauty Awards for everything from Salon of the Year to Employer of the Year 2013, and the Professional Beauty Show awards for Nail Technicians and Make-Up Artists are excellent accolades to apply and prepare for. Apply and see what happens. Send on product samples, well written supporting press releases and make sure they have all the ingredient


information readily at hand. Don’t worry about being not being salubrious enough. If you were to win a Best Value Award you will attract consumers on both price point and quality. Winning Factor Who consistently wins awards? Check out your competition. What do they do right? What technique does he or she have? But also, think about other awards that are out there. Your salon may not be able to compete with bigger luxury spas due to size alone; but you may have the best Nail Technician working for you who could bolster the business with an award. You might have a fantastic, easy to use website that customers come back to time and time again so check out website awards. You could have any number of business assets that are award winning. You might be a chain of salons that has a great customer and employee care ethos, so you could go for Employer of the Year Award. Think about what you have to offer. Be A Show Off! Show off your award! This goes for any coverage you receive whether it is an award or a positive article written about your business - showcase it! Take a picture of the award or a member of staff receiving it. Post the photos on Facebook, tweet it on Twitter and make sure you display it on your website on the front page. Take a quote from the award itself - even if you were just nominated such as Nominated for the Joe Blogg’s Award. If you stay on that track you might just win it next time. Include the award logo on your business cards, especially if you are rebranding. If you’re an individual include the logo as your Facebook banner, your Twitter signature and on your webpage as part of your bio. Awards can also form a very attractive base for a news story or news point for promoting your business, your brand or yourself. Personally, I love receiving press releases about awards, it’s great to see beauty professionals in Ireland doing well at their craft. And it is uplifting for us to feature it in our news area. Make sure everyone you can possibly contact knows about it. Send well written press releases with your logo and award embedded in the PDF or word document reiterating past or present awards. I applied to lots of skin and laser clinics, but they would not consider me as I hadn’t worked with lasers before. There are so many going for these jobs so you need to be qualified. It’s like a vicious circle they won’t take you on unless you have experience and you couldn’t get experience without working in the clinics. The course took three days, the first two days was theory behind the laser, how it works, and the last was working with the machine all day.
