EDITOR’S LETTER | Jot

It’s KIM ARCHER

OKAY TO PIVOT THE TIME HAS COME TO SAY FAREWELL TO JOT MAG. IT’S BEEN AN AMAZING FIVE YEARS AT THE HELM OF THIS BEAUTIFUL PUBLICATION AND IT’S WITH MIXED EMOTIONS THAT I WRITE THIS, MY LAST JOT EDITORIAL. Goodbyes are sad and change is hard but the Jot Girls and I want to CELEBRATE Jot and give her the send off she deserves. My life is heading in a different direction now. And it’s taken me a while to allow myself the permission to pivot and to realise IT’S OKAY TO CHANGE COURSE. It’s totally okay to head down a new path. I’ve been dabbling in the world of essential oils for some time now.

Maybe you have seen them pop up on my social media. Maybe you have started following my new Mindful Living Instagram account and public facebook page. Maybe you have joined my oils team (thank you) and are loving and living the oils too! The oils have drawn me in. Big time. They have had a positive impact on all family members here in the Archer household. Jot Magazine 4

The oils align with what I care about and stand for and I am focusing on creating a business from them. My oily business - Mindful Living, has already taken on a life of its own and things are gaining momentum big time. My own team of oily lovers is growing they are integrating the oils into their lives and those of their loved ones too - and with amazing results. And it’s time to give this new business of mine the attention it needs which means stepping back from Jot and the industry I have been part of since 2004.. I have been so fortunate to have been given many amazing opportunities within the paper crafting industry. I have met many, many amazing people. I still have a very strong belief in telling our stories, taking photos and memory keeping but it’s time to move along this new path and see where it will take me.

projects and always embracing everything to do with Jot. They are an incredibly talented and beautiful bunch of girls!! I know this decision has been hard for them - they’re sad too - but they stand tall, surrounding me with unwavering support. Thank you to Lisa Pate, who for quite some time was my right hand girl at Etzcetera (my first publication) and in the early days of Jot. Lisa’s positivity and joyful attitude was contagious and I loved working with her. We went on many adventures together and she was an important part of my team for a very long time. Then Anna Allan stepped gracefully into the Editorial Assistant’s role. It was a pleasure to work with Anna - she was so positive and eager to help and nothing was ever too hard. She embraced every task I asked of her. To our advertisers and regular contributors, past Jot girls, our lovely regular columnist Shari Brewer (who worked on Etzcetera too) - each one of you has played a special role in Jot and I am forever grateful!

A HUGE THANK YOU TO SO MANY OF YOU.

To Heidi Swapp - this girl has always been a mentor of mine. She has always, always supported me and Jot and has been incredibly generous with product and opportunities for my Jot Girls. I first met Heidi back in 2005 when we taught alongside each other in Melbourne at Pride Publishing’s convention.

I want to thank my Jot Girls - they have supported me solidly for the past five years and I know without a doubt, that they have, and always will have, my back. They rally around when needed, making last minute

She was charismatic, generous, friendly, warm and welcoming. I was star struck! She remains one of the most energetic, creative, innovative, positive and beautiful people I have ever crossed paths with!

To my originals - Mardi Winen and Yvette Adams - these two have been with me way back when I was just a little scrapbooker who had this crazy idea to teach live online classes through my blog… well before the invention of Facebook groups, events, online workshops etc..Then Sheree Forcier joined us too, not long after our first @Home scrapbooking retreat. These three girls have been with me through my @Home workshop days where they helped create content and additional samples for my Kim Archer online workshop site. They came along with me when I set up my first online publication - lifestyle title Etzcetera and then of course they have remained with me here at Jot. They are the kindest, most lovely girls you will ever meet and I am blessed to call them friends. They have been with me through thick and thin! And Mardi continues on with me too into the oils world as she joins my team as one of my leaders, building and growing her own thriving oils business right alongside me. Of course a HUGE thank you to my family for always supporting me and never telling me “You can’t do that” when I would come up with new schemes: • I’m going to teach classes online on my blog. • I’m going to create my own dedicated online workshop website. • I’m going to organise a retreat for 50 ladies. • I’m going to create my own lifestyle magazine. • I’m going to create my own paper crafting online magazine. They would just smile and say, yes, you are. And also an extra thank you to my mum who proof read every single word of Jot each and every issue (and Etzcetera too) Thank you!

And to our readers. You guys made our job so worthwhile. To everyone who has entered a Mood Board challenge, followed us on social media, made our projects, contributed layouts and articles and poured over every single issue - thank you. The support we have always felt for Jot is incredible and very much appreciated. So with all of that said, please settle back and enjoy Issue 21 and help us celebrate this grand FINALE ISSUE of Jot. Thank you.

So what is happening with Jot? I have a new website kimarcher.com.au and while it will be primarily for my essential oils business, I have dedicated a small section just for Jot - to house the back issues + our ebooks. My new website is still a work in progress but all back issues of JOT will be uploaded over the coming weeks. This, our finale issue - #21 will be available to read online for FREE until 31 December 2018. After that it will be available to purchase as a digital PDF download (along with all other back issues).

AND for those readers who are also interested in natural health and wellbeing AND may be curious about essential oils, (and not working with another doTERRA love), reach out to me for a chat and check out the info over there on the opposite page>> You can also now find me on my Mindful Living Instagram account here and my public Kim Archer Mindful Living facebook page here.

HOW

DOES SHE DO IT?

KIM JEFFRESS

I LOVE USING CUT FILES IN MY LAYOUTS AND COULDN’T HELP BUT ADD SOME MACHINE STITCHING TO THE END OF THE PAPER PLANE CUT FILE FOR A WHIMSICAL FEEL.

I am a slow scrapper. I agonise over every single element on my page so this particular layout probably took me about two hours. I used my We R Memory Keepers typewriter to type out my journaling strips. My design evolved as I made the layout. Starting with the base and the cut file, I added in my machine stitching. I had the idea of adding the photos and ephemera floating around the machine stitching to simulate the elements flying through the air behind the paper plane. I then searched for ephemera pieces that colour matched with the gorgeous ombre looking patterned paper and added them in and around my photos. I was able to fit nine small photos onto this 12x12 inch layout.

SAY HELLO.

MARDI WINEN

SIMPLY MARDI

WHERE DO YOU LIVE AND WHO WITH? I live in the Riverland region of country South Australia with my husband and our now empty nest. We have three married children and three very loved grandies.

WHAT DO YOU DO?

I am a Paramedic with SA Ambulance which I have enjoyed over the last 16 years but over the last 9 months my heart has been dragged in a new direction and I have been building an essential oil business. Its new territory for me.. learning..growing and nurturing.

LIVING A LOVELY LIFE

WHAT IS THE BEST THING ABOUT WHAT YOU DO?

Its taken me such a long time to settle into what is really important and for a long while I was trying to juggle it all... big mistake! So I gave up a few things (insert ‘vegetable garden’ for instance) and turned my focus to what I really love. I adopted the name Simply Mardi because I just want a simple and uncomplicated life. I set to work to de clutter and overhaul everything in our home and on my calendar. I now aim for low tox, low waste and simple. I began with doTERRA last year. These beautiful oils are so aligned with what I believe in .. not only for the physical and emotional support but they have also turned me into the DIY queen! In my leisure time I love to travel and macramé has become my source of relaxation ...its like meditation to me.

MY PERFECT MORNING IS A DAY AT HOME AND A GOOD BLACK COFFEE ~Mardi Winen

AS YOU HAVE TRAVELED EXTENSIVELY, WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE PLACE EVER? This is such a tricky question because I have never traveled anywhere I didn’t like. Internationally I’ll say Europe for the history and contrast as we crossed borders. Its hard to forget that feeling .... standing at the Colosseum or strolling the streets of Pompeii. Within Australia I loved our leisurely trip in our m otor home last year. We spent eight weeks on the road in Far North Queensland, enjoying the beaches. I worked on macramés and we walked kilometres every day. It was totally rejuvenating.

NATALIE ELPHINSTONE “These Basic Grey fabric tags have been in my stash for YEARS. I’ve been holding on to them because I had a sewing project in mind..... but that was two babies ago and I still haven’t made it, so it was time I faced facts that it was never going to happen! Well the good news is I used the whole packet on this layout instead and I couldn’t be happier with the results!”

Well this set of American Craft gold thickers are one of my many products that I kept thinking were too good for a layout. “When the Craft Market collection was released, quite some time ago now, these embroidery hoop wood frames were very popular! So much so, I couldn’t get them BUT I WANTED SOME! Eventually I found an online store that had some in stock and bought about three packs!!

However, when I received them I was too afraid to use them as I felt they needed a project that did them justice since it took me quite an effort to get any in the first place!! Sound familiar?

Completing this layout and using these frames was super-duper satisfying! And I love that they fit the theme of the layout perfectly!!”

a colour

WE ALL LOVE A GOOD CHALLENGE AROUND HERE AT JOT MAG. And the Jot Girls all rose to the challenge when I asked them to create a project inspired by one of the following colour groups. How about you? Is your work generally fresh and cool or warm and earthy? Maybe you prefer bold graphic design with big titles and lots of black and white or maybe your work is often soft, florally and feminine. WHICH COLOUR GROUP ARE YOU?

greens

Jot Magazine 39

LAUREN HENDER With a pretty colour palette of pinks and floral I couldn’t resist scrapbooking my little girl and her much loved puppy.

greens

Jot Magazine 40

SUPPLIES: Paige Evans , Heidi Swapp, Mintay, Cocoa Vanilla Studio.

MARDI WINEN I was really drawn to the black and white colour group purely because of my love of a striking black and white title. I added in a little grey as a slight contrast... but luckily there is never a shortage of black and white in my embellishment collection. SUPPLIES: Crate Paper, Heidi Swapp, Kellie Stamps, Studio Calico.

Jot Magazine 41

LEANNE ALLINSON The Cool Colours combination really drew my eye when trying to decide which colour group to create with. Ultimately the choice, however, was decided for me when I chose to document the story of whale watching from the beach. What better colours are there to portray the beauty of the ocean and the amazing creatures that live in it. SUPPLIES: American Crafts, Bella BLVD, Simple Stories, Jillibean Soup, Scraptastic, Heidi Swapp. Jot Magazine 42

ANNA ALLAN I think it’s pretty obvious what colour scheme I chose. Some may find the monochromatic look challenging and hard to do. I’m one who finds it quite therapeutic and interesting - a nice change of pace. This layout came together rather quickly. With a grid like background of patterned paper, I used minimal embellishments so it didn’t become too busy as the stripes and dots stand out quite strongly.

The paper hearts came about by accident really as I folded the paper scraps to put in my little bin bag. It’s a nice little surprise when you look down at what’s in your hand and realise “I could actually use that!” SUPPLIES: Bazzill, Cocoa Vanilla Studios, D-Lish Scraps, Tom Holtz, American Crafts, Heidi Swapp. Jot Magazine 43

SHEREE FORCIER The floral colour combo was perfect for the theme of this page! I found the beautiful floral chipboard sticker in my stash and the rest of the page just came together so easily from there. You can’t go wrong with pretty pinks, greens and a touch of yellow! greens

Jot Magazine 44

SUPPLIES: American Crafts, October Afternoon, My Mind’s Eye, Felicity Jane, Crate Paper.

NATALIE ELPHINSTONE I chose the Warm Colour scheme to base my spread on, but I did also sneak in quite a bit of grey to balance things out, especially since I had converted some of my photos to black and white. This page tells the story of Shiloh’s first foods. She loved it, but wanted to feed herself!! SUPPLIES: Studio Calico Documenter Kits

Jot Magazine 45

KIM JEFFRESS When I looked at the photo and the warm colour combo it was almost a perfect match so I couldn’t help but use it with this fun shaker frame I cut using a Paige Evans Cut File and added some vellum. SUPPLIES: American Crafts, Heidi Swapp.

Jot Magazine 46

AMANDA HALL I finally decided on the delicious BOLD colour scheme because of my love of typography and the drama of all things black and white. Pulling together a graphic layout, with stripes and dots should have come easily but it was hard not to pop a third colour in there and to rely on the strong lettering and big image. SUPPLIES: MAMBI, Kaisercraft, Heidi Swapp, Kmart.

Jot Magazine 47

LOREDANA BUCARIA I love to create a watercolour background, then cut it out and build the pages with many different layers! At the moment I’m loving warm colors as they are dreamy and mixed with the white it’s pure love! SUPPLIES: Bazzill, Prima, Crate Paper, Studio Calico.

make Lauren Hender

Lauren shows us how to make a pretty, layered 12x12 inch layout using lots of inking, ephemera, some stencils and a 3x4 inch photo. Needing a more boyish layout? Using the same design techniques, swap out your colour scheme and embellishments for a more masculine look.

1

Adhere white cardstock to patterned paper leaving a small border. Bend up edges for a random, rough edged look.

2

Using a favourite stencil and distress stain or ink decorate three areas on your layout background.

6

Using a roller liquid paper, roll on some lines to journal on. Once the liquid paper is dry, use a black journaling pen to add in your story.

WHAT YOU NEED | Cocoa Vanilla Studio, Tim Holtz, Papermate, Kaiser Craft and Staedtler.

Jot Magazine 50

5

Add coordinating embellishments to your layout. Lauren has used cute little hearts and butterflies to go with her floral theme.

3

Cut two large flower clusters and using a large lace doily adhere to centre of page.

4

Mount your horizontal 3x4 inch photo with at least six coordinating paper off cuts and then adhere to layout.

Lauren has left plenty of white space which helps to balance out the clusters of embellishments. The patterned paper border helps to ground her layout.

GO WILD & EXPLORE Anna Allan - The Jot Team

I loved the mix of rich raspberry reds and pinks with the bold black and white print BUT the thing I was most drawn to was those cut out words. I just had to replicate that look on my page so I got out the stencils and alpha stickers and cut out my title from scratch. It was fun just being creative with different ways of producing the look of my page that I wanted. And I’m super happy with the end result!

WHAT HAVE THE JOT GIRLS BEEN SHARING ON SOCIAL MEDIA?

In our regular feature, we get to know the Jot Girls a little better by taking a peek into their daily lives as they share some of their recent Instagram photos with us.

Natalie Elphinstone Over the past year I’ve been posting a weekly photo of Shiloh on Instagram, documenting her milestones and memories using the hashtag #52weeksofShiloh. THE MANY FACES OF YOU! FEATURING THE JOT TEAM Jot Magazine 77

Jot Magazine 78

EVERYDAY MOMENTS Natalie Elphinstone - The Jot Team Shiloh might only be 11 months old in these photos and not able to use a single word.... but she sure knows how to communicate! Love how her faces tell the story of her multitude of emotions.

THE FAKE GRUMP Leanne Allinson - The Jot Team Mr 8 can pull faces at the drop of a hat. Lately it’s been his silly faces but he went through a stage earlier in the year, where all he wanted was his “fake” grumpy look. Especially in front of the camera! Not a lot of fun for me when I’d much prefer his cute little grin instead!

SHE

Lauren Hender - The Jot Team A simple way to capture some different emotions/faces of your loved ones is to get them to stand up against a wall and slide down and sit on the floor. Then talk to them about their memories. One that made them laugh, one that makes them think, one that makes them mindful and so on and so on. As each thought happens capture a shot. In a short and memorable time you will have a collection of beautiful expressions and the memories to journal in your scrapbooking.

DO YOUR THING

Raquel Bowman - The Jot Team This kid! Well I think these photos say it all. Our boy is the most beautiful little man; full of spunk with such a cheeky little personality. The days are never dull! But I must say, I wouldn’t want it any other way.

SUPPLIES | Pinkfresh Studio papers and embellishments, white card stock, typewriter, sewing machine.

THIS FACE

Anna Allan - The Jot Team I’ve predominantly used a kit for this layout. I’ve gone for a horizontal style for this page. The background is just patterned paper strips layered onto each other which gives a fun textured look. A few embellishment pieces tie the photos into the background to make it all connect and fit together. It’s quite busy and a little crazy but considering the subject of the photos, it’s right on point! Jot Magazine 90

make Kim Jeffress

Kim joins us today to share a beautiful layout using a massive “buildings” cut file as the dominant feature on her layout background. By having such a large feature you don’t need a lot of other details. Kim has kept it simple with a small photo, some journaling strips and a few well placed cards and embellishments.

1

Trim patterned paper to allow a white cardstock border that also matches with the white cardstock cut file. Creating a border helps to frame and ground your layout.

2

Kim has chosen a huge cut file for her background. Adhere cut file with pop dots to the centre of the page, bending the cut file slightly to create a curved effect.

WHAT YOU NEED | American Crafts, Heidi Swapp, Storyline cards, stickers. Cocoa Vanilla flair, Paige Evans cut file.

Jot Magazine 92

6

Type journaling on a typewriter, trim into strips and adhere to the top of the layout.

5

Add the title with thickers and a trimmed storyline card attached to a wooden skewer to create a flag.

4

Cluster storyline cards in and around the photo, layering some with pop dots and tucking some under the photo and cut file to create texture and dimension.

3

Layer your photo over the cut file with pop dots as well to give your photo some height.

Add in some small embellishments to finish. Jot Magazine 93

When completing this spread about Mother’s Day it was important to me to include the letters the older girls had written me.

NATALIE ELPHINSTONE

As they were quite large in size I knew it would be difficult to keep the originals so I simply photographed them and printed them out at 3x4 so they could slip straight into one of the pockets!

Embellishing pocket pages can be as simple as a chipboard shape on your photo! Simple.

TIP: I printed some of my photos in black and white so the spread didn’t become too overwhelmed with colour.

DEAR BY SHARI BREWER

THANK YOU TO SHARI FOR SHARING HER LIFE WITH US IN HER DEAR DIARY REGULAR FEATURE HERE AT JOT. IT’S BEEN AN ABSOLUTE PLEASURE WORKING WITH SHARI! Jot Magazine 106

HAVE I TOLD YOU HOW MUCH I’VE APPRECIATED REDISCOVERING YOU, AND AGAIN SHARING OUR JOURNEY HERE IN YOUR PAGES? Well, it’s true…. but…. Twists and turns and all of those things. You see Diary, I’ve turned to you in times when my voice has been shaky, when I thought my words weren’t being heard and when I felt invisible in the world. Thank God for you, as you’ve never let me down and have given me such a trustworthy vessel to outpour what I’ve needed to share. Forever grateful for your unwavering companionship and that’s the truth.

Please don’t see this as abandonment – it’s not and never will be. It’s just the right time to put you aside for a while, however many moons that may be, and enjoy life in the moment. I feel for a while at least; these reflections need to stay in my heart and not be on paper. I’ll be forever grateful to you Diary, and while this is goodbye for now, it may not be the end of our story together.

Until then….. whenever….

Now, that’s why this entry is so bittersweet and difficult to write. It’s time to say goodbye. For now. Diary, everything is going so well and I’m raring and ready to face the world without you by my side. It may not be farewell forever….. but wow, look how great things are!! Liam is settled and loving his work and life (oh to be 21 again!!) and Shaun is living the city dream, thriving at uni and jumping in to enjoy all Brisbane has to offer. Gina is growing by the day and becoming a young lady, surer of herself and a delight to spend time with. The universe has delivered, that’s for sure. I am satisfied and my heart is full..

Shari Brewer lives on the Sunshine Coast in Queensland with her family and these diary entries may or may not be a truthful account of her day-to-day experiences. She’s never been shy of a story, so it’s best you decide what’s fact or fiction. A mother of three, Shari’s a part time high school teacher who keeps herself busy running a household as well as the parenting website Teenage Survival Coach. In her spare time she clatters on the keyboard and pimps her writing services as a freelancer. Teenage Survival Coach Website Jot Magazine 107
