Killarney Golf & Fishing Club

“BEST PARKLAND COURSE” IN MUNSTER 2016. The Golfer’s Guide to Ireland, which is the most prestigious publication on Golf in Ireland has awarded the accolade for the “Best Parkland Course in Munster” for the Killeen Course, for 2016, to Killarney Golf and Fishing Club, this is a wonderful achievement, and a just reward to all of those concerned. Special mention must go to our Course Manager, Enda Murphy and his dedicated team, and to the Course representative from the Club Council, Sean Coyne who has just recently been replaced in that position by former Club Captain Mikey Daly, and who had been assisting Sean in that role for some years. Congratulations all round are most deserved, and are all the more satisfying when the damage that was wreaked on our courses by last winter’s storms is taken into consideration. The tremendous effort put in by our Club Members, and our friends from Dooks Golf Club after the storms of last year must and helped out with the devoting evenings during the year, will have gone a long way to help out in bringing our courses back into good shape, and therefore we all played our part in helping to win this fantastic award. The most recent accolade that Killarney Golf and Fishing Club had been awarded, was in 2011, after the Club had hosted the Irish Open that year, and was for “Best Parkland Course in Ireland”. With a view to the continuation of Course improvements, the programme for same for 2017 has just been announced, improvements to the 1st 3rd 4th 7th and 10th on Killeen, are either ongoing, or in the pipeline, these improvements will not only enhance the visual aspect of all of these golf holes but will also help to speed up the rate of play, as time spent searching for golf balls in various ponds and streams will be substantially reduced as they are all going to cleaned out, and any Golf balls landing therein will be visible, and thus should be fairly easily retrievable. SYMPATHY Club Captain, Declan McCarthy, on behalf of the entire Club wishes to pass on our condolences to Club Member, Liam Maguire on the recent death of his father Terry. FIXTURES The wet weather conditions over the past week or so, resulted in the scheduled competition for Sunday last, the 29th of January being cancelled, this was the first weekend that the Men’s Club were unable to hold a competition this winter, which is complete contrast to last winter when our courses were closed for such a long time. Next Sunday will see the commencement of the “Double Shotgun” starts, with tee-times scheduled for 8.30 A.M. and 12.30 P.M. On Mahony’s Point.
