Schubert’s last sonata took on a rare, devotional quality here ... Everything about this performance - from the music itself to Schiff’s own presence - felt transfigured

PROGRAMME

Born in Budapest, for decades he has performed in the world’s leading festivals and venues, releasing a string of acclaimed recordings, receiving countless international awards and becoming not only a towering representative of Central European culture but also a vocal advocate for broader civil rights and freedoms.

HAYDN Sonata no. 62 in E flat major Hob XVI:52

Direct from the Salzburg Festival, Sir András comes to Kilkenny to perform works at the very heart of his repertoire: the last sonatas by the great masters of Viennese Classicism – Haydn, Mozart, Beethoven and Schubert. From Beethoven’s transcendent Sonata in C minor to Schubert’s otherworldly Sonata in B flat, Sir András takes us on a journey through the sublime, leavened with surprising touches of humour. This will be his first appearance in Ireland since 2011, and an unmissable chance to witness a master at work amid the splendour of St Canice’s.
