From the Community College Completion Corp (www.cccompletioncorp.org) 

You’ll earn more! Students with an Associate’s Degree or Certificate can earn as much as $8,000 more per year than a high school graduate. (US Census Bureau, 2005 data)

People change jobs up to 10 times in their working lives. A college credential always gives you an edge. (Rosenberg McKay, D. “How Often Do People Change Careers?” Guide To Career Planning since 1997 (2006))

Unemployment for community college graduates is typically 30% lower than for high school graduates. (Chronicle of Higher Education, September 2010)

You’ll help reverse a national trend in the declining number of college graduates & you’ll open doors for your children - children of college graduates are more likely to graduate themselves! (With Their Whole Lives Ahead of Them, A Public Agenda Report for the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation)

You’ll be more likely to volunteer, vote, contribute to charity, serve on boards & run for office. (With Their Whole Lives Ahead of Them, A Public Agenda Report for the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation)

Research links greater educational attainment to longer life, healthful eating, exercising and avoiding risk factors. Why? People with higher education are quicker to change behavior in response to new evidence. They tend to have higher incomes, making them more likely to have health insurance and live in safer neighborhoods with better access to recreational facilities and grocery stores. (Robert Wood Johnson Foundation’s Commission to Build a Healthier America)

Dr. Aaron Woodard teaches history and government here at KCC. On New Year’s Eve he received word that an article of his is to be published. It is difficult to get something accepted for publication, so please congratulate him! This is quite an accomplishment. Dr. Woodard’s article is “Beaver Bales and Steamboat Wails—The American Fur Company and Steam Power on the Upper Missouri in the 1830’s” to be published in Heritage of the Great Plains, a journal published biannually. It is great to see one of our own faculty members contributing to scholarship!

SCHOLARSHIP APPLICATIONS

Why wasn’t I selected? from scholarships.com

Conventional wisdom says if you don’t win a scholarship, you were not the most qualified. BUT - many applications, sent by deserving applicants, are rejected for other reasons. Scholarship providers receive many applications for each award. They’re under no obligation to give each application a full and fair reading. They are also under constraints to judge applications in a timely manner. They establish rules about submissions and may also take a variety of unwritten rules into account. If your application doesn’t follow the rules or runs afoul of scholarship etiquette, the reviewer is more likely to reject it, even at first glance. Before submitting, make sure it won’t run afoul of these reasons an application will not win a scholarship. Those in red have been experienced by Kilian’s scholarship committee! Applicant mailed the envelope without the application enclosed. Applicant was rude or abusive to the judges. Applicant forgot to include their name and/or address. Applicant sent the application with insufficient postage- returned "postage due." Applicant submitted an incomplete application. *Read the application instructions thoroughly! Applicant submitted an illegible or unintelligible application. *You have 1 chance to make a good impression! Applicant submitted irrelevant or inappropriate supporting documentation. *Read the application instructions thoroughly! Applicant submitted a dirty or stained application. *Did you spill on your application? Fill out a new one! Make a good 1st impression! Applicant applied for an award when falling short of the minimum requirements. *Read the minimum requirements! They vary by scholarship! Applicant made a number of spelling errors. *Some even spell Kilian wrong! Do not depend on spell-check! The bottom line: Always read & follow the instructions, be neat & thorough & adhere to deadlines. Good luck!

WHAT IS A 1098-T FORM AND WHY DO I NEED ONE? The IRS Form 1098-T is a tax form that colleges & universities send to their students listing the student fees and tuition paid during the tax year. The school also reports this information to the IRS. Schools have until January 31st to postmark this form. The Kilian Business and Financial Aid Offices cannot answer questions about your specific tax situation. Please contact a tax professional for guidance on using IRS Form 1098-T.
