MERU

EVOLO 2022 HONORABLE MENTION

Meru,It means the abode of gods at the centre of universe, the project brings together the context with those inhabiting it. The goal is to create organic growth within a community by utilizing progressive improvements , for the betterment of people.Currently in Delhi ,among many problems is the incredulous amount of waste that is produced by the city and in tandem with that ,its relation and allocation with the slums of delhi.Bhalswa one of the major dumping sites in and around Delhi is not just a dumpyard instead its the major source of income for many people living around the site. The end product is a skyscraper that acts as a sustainable city that has modern settlements growing around it.Due to the phased construction of the project ,it allows for an organic and comfortable growth. From being a dumpyard to a vertical city this project is conceptualised as a way to change the landscape of the area .

The entire project revolves around rehabilitating and healing the community of unpriviliged slum dwellers. The project is carried out in 4 phases. The purpose of the design is to build up the surrounding community in parallel with the building, in a sustainable manner while looking the long term implications of the building , applying the priciples of recycling and rehabilitation in every sense.

Phase 1 of the project consists of rehabilitating the site by converting all the waste into recyclable material and energy which powers the factory itself. This also provides work for the surroundings slum dwellers.

Phase 2,Commercial buildings are

Phase 3,Socio cultural buildings are

built next to the factories along with green open spaces and O.A.T.This is done to revitalize the surrounding slums

built on the markets along with healthcare and institutional infrastructure increasing the log term value of the project ,slum and site.

Phase 4,Residences are built for the

surrounding slums to provide better quality living . After which, The factories start exporting goods to provide income and electricity making the entire project sustainable.

Phase 4 plan

C&D and Ceramics module Over here all C&D waste that has been filtered in situ gets processed for recycling. All the textiles ,plastics and glass found on site gets converted into ceramics which will be used houses

Factory Module The heat generated from the recycling modules are used to create electricity, and the off-gas is converted or stored here.

Steel Making Module

These are all of the various modules used for the socio-cultural,medical and institutional infrastructure. Open spaces, markets and O.A.T.

These are the various modules used in the residence, school and healthcare units.

All modules are divided into 2 floors which have a 0.4 level raise, this is done to have a difference in the quality of the spaces in the modules. All modules were configured based on number of views available.

Type A Corridor

All rubber tyres are broken down for the metalurgical coke in order to make steel.

Type A is a module that has 2 exposed faces and the spacing of 2 block units.

Type B

Market Modules

Phase 3 plan

Type B is a module that has 3 exposed faces and the spacing of 1 block unit.

Classroom

Type C Classroom Corridor

Bridge

Type C is a module that has 4 exposed faces and the spacing of 2 block unit.

Phase 2 plan

Type D Type D is a module that has 2 exposed faces and the spacing of 1 block unit.

Type E Medical Unit Type E is a moidule that has 3 expiosed faces and the spacing of 1 block unit.

For vertical circulation, diagonal elevators used.

EQUIM DESIGNS COMPETITION (HOME FOR HOMELESS)

The aim of the project is to design a group housing system for homeless people using creative design ideas and innovative strategies, while keeping in mind the surrounding conte context and environmental f a c t o r s . While designing the structure and layout of the built form, the surrounding context and climatology of the site has been taken into consideration with the use of sustainable, cost effective, and locally a v a l a i b l e materials in this project. The Concept of ILLAM arrives from the idea of “THE HONEYCOMB CONJECTURE”. The honeycomb shape is the most mathematically perfect form, leaving very little waste when shape is lined together.

EACH AND EVERY HOUSING UNIT IN THE MAIN BLOCK AS WELL AS THE SPACES IN THE ADDITIONAL BLOCK ARE PROVIDED WITH LOUVERS AND OPENINGS TO ALLOW NATURAL LIGHT AND VENTILATION INTO THE INDOOR SPACES.

taking the context of the site and the general chennai climatology into consideration, the open and built spaces have been designed and oriented for maximum optimization. complete use of the east and south sun is being made by placing the organic farming areas in those regions. on the other hand, the outdoor recreational activities are strategically placed on the nothern front, to give the users a relaxing and comfORtable zone.

FRAGMENTATION OF SINGULAR AND GROUPS OF HEXAGONS ARE DONE TO CREATE THE SECONDARY BLOCK FOOTPRINTS.
