KÉP KLUB KÉP KLUB is an international group of uniformed ‘art workers’ who first formed in Zalaegerszeg, Hungary. The three artists: Amy Ritter (US), Kieran Butler (AU), and Rob Burton (UK), use expanded drawing, photographic and installation practices to create site responsive, often public, artworks in the context(s) they find themselves in. Adopting a methodology of collecting images and stories KÉP KLUB works to question the role of the contemporary artist, their context and the relationship between artist and audience. Who is the ‘art worker’, what value does a community assign them, and how can they collaborate (or work together). KÉP KLUB invited the people of Zalaegerszeg to donate a space or object of their choosing. Surfaces included, but were not limited to, walls, garage doors, fences or objects such as a bicycle or an item of clothing. After a site visit and interview the artists design colors and imagery specific to the individual or family in their own artistic style. In this way KÉP KLUB becomes not only a collaboration between the three artists, but also a collaboration with the local community. In an attempt to understand this unknown environment, the artists create a new connection with the places and people they meet.

Amy Ritter (b. 1986, Philadelphia, PA, USA) Amy received her BFA from Tyler School of Art, Philadelphia, PA and her MFA from The Ohio State University, Columbus, OH. Her work will be included in Woodmere Museum’s 74th annual juried exhibition, Philadelphia, PA; she will be exhibiting a solo exhibition at the Arlington Arts Center in spring 2016, Arlington, VA; and has also exhibited in Vermont, Kentucky, Ohio, Minneapolis, and Denmark. Amy has also received a fellowship at The Fine Arts Work Center for the 20152016 year, Provincetown, MA. Amy’s work has characteristics of sculpture, photography and architecture. Concrete, cardboard, and digital images are the core materials she works with. These materials relate back to Amy’s childhood of growing up in a mobile home in Eastern Pennsylvania. Once these homes are built they immediately begin to decay. The foundation is built upon concrete cinderblocks to hold the home. Amy sees the cinderblocks as a foundation, both literal in the way it holds up a home and as a metaphorical replacement for the legs that hold up our bodies. She pastes two-dimensional Xerox images to a three-dimensional structure so the work takes on a physical presence and becomes part of the architecture within that community.

Kieran Butler (b. 1992, Nowra, NSW, AU) currently lives and works in Sydney Australia. Kieran is an emerging photographic artist with a BFA, Honours First Class from UNSW | Art & Design, Sydney, Australia. In 2014 he received the John Gage Prize for Colour at the UNSW Art & Design Annual and was a finalist in the Fisher’s Ghost Art Award and the Kudos Emerging Artist + Designer Award. Kieran has recently exhibited at MOP Projects, Kudos Gallery, UNSW Galleries, Dark_Space and Archive_Space in Sydney, Australia. He has also exhibited internationally in Gdansk, Poland as part of Photomedia site and Context Special Project. In a pursuit to understand the language of contemporary photographic practice, Kieran is interested in the ‘thingness’ of the photographic object. A ‘thing’ can be an article, an image, an idea or a material object, something that is difficult to denominate more specifically, and ‘thingness’ is its essence. Kieran approaches photography more like a proposition or a drawing, a process of reaching inner illumination, a process to finding a ‘things’ essence. In this way his work might loosely be termed post-object, post-photography or post-painting. The photographic object is reimagined becoming ambiguous, unclear or indistinct. What is it now and what could it be?

Rob Burton (b. 1987, Derbyshire, UK) Currently lives and works in Norwich, UK. Rob Completed his BSC Multimedia Technology and Music Production from the University of Derby, UK. Rob has recently become an exhibiting Illustrator and artist in the Derbyshire area including 4 works as part of the Movement and Perception exhibition at Quad Gallery, Derbyshire, UK. Robs work consists of Character based illustration as well as more abstract installation based work, favoring bold and simple lined structures and shapes. Rob favors the DIY aesthetic and this outlook is reflected in the style and approach to his work. robeterrestrial.tumblr.com
