My active listening checklist

Focus on the purpose of the conversation. Be respectful and aware of the present moment.

Pay attention to body language. Much of communication relies on the nonverbal.

Give encouraging verbal cues and gestures and expressions, such as smiling or nodding.

Clarify and paraphrase information to help both of you fill in any gaps in understanding

Asking an open-ended question can encourage the speaker to elaborate on an important or interesting idea

Remaining open and avoiding criticizing can open many new ideas, perspectives, and opportunities
