PROTECTING THE KIWI AND OTHER NATIVES

The Kiwi Birdlife Park is more than a tourist attraction – they assist the Department of Conservation with recovery efforts for, amongst others, brown kiwi, tuatara, brown teal, kea, weka, blue duck and black stilt. Captive breeding programs, together with rehabilitation and ultimately release into natural habitat, are the key goals of the park's programs. Kiwi are bred at the Park and cared for until they are 1kg in weight – big enough to fend off the predators that are killing them as hatchlings. They are then released into safe predator-controlled areas. Kiwi Birdlife Park have released kiwi into the Rimutaka Forest Park, Mt Bruce Sanctuary, and the Maungataniwha Sanctuary. They are also involved with the breed-for-release programme for critically endangered grand and Otago skinks. These lizards are NZ’s largest and rarest, sharing a threat rating with kakapo. Kiwi Conservation The park is self-funded so public visits and contributions have been vital to its efforts over the last 30 years, to ensure that our rare and beautiful native birds aren't lost forever.
