High School Corner! Engineering disciplines design to solve problems Maths, science, research, prototypes, design, installation, maintenance, production, safety & quality assurance... that’s engineering. It’s all about solving problems using specialist, technical, and practical skills. Without it, technological advances in the world would never happen. A massive variety of industries need professional engineers, including Defense, Space, Energy, Transport, Environmental, Medical and Pharmaceutical, Entertainment, Construction, Marine, Food/Drink, and Business. Here’s just a short list of the diverse engineering disciplines you could pursue: Aerospace - Develop, design, and produce air and spacecraft, including complex subsystems that require specialists from many engineering groups such as electrical, mechanical, and computer engineering. Agricultural / Biological - Covers subjects from land farming and forestry to aquaculture (raising food sources that thrive in water). These engineers also work with biofuels, plan animal environments, and improve food process methods. Automation - With a mixture of hardware and software techniques, these engineers design, produce and maintain equipment which reduces the need for human work. Automotive - Research, design and develop vehicles and their subsystems. Biomedical - Combine biology, medicine and engineering to analyze and design medical innovations that will improve patient care, like MRIs or artificial organs, prosthetic limbs. Chemical - Use the physical world to manipulate individual atom reactions to develop new materials for fields like nanotechnology, energy storage, and computing. Civil - Specialize in road, bridge, buildings and water supply system design and construction. Supervise and direct construction teams so that structures are built to withstand earthquakes and hurricanes.

Holt-Dimondale D.I. Receives Boost from Area Businesses as Teams Prepare for Tournament Season

In case you are not familiar with D.I., Destination Imagination is a fun, hands-on system of learning that fosters students’ creativity, courage, and curiosity through open-ended academic challenges in the STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts & Mathematics) fields. It’s hard to describe, but think of it as Science Olympiad meets drama club. Kids form teams at the beginning of the school year and work with a parent or teacher who serves as their coach/mentor. They spend several months practicing instant challenges and working on their central challenge, which they perform, at the regional competition in March. The top 3 teams for each of the different challenges/levels go onto compete at states, with the top teams from states going on to compete at the DI Global Finals competition which is held in Knoxville, TN each May.

cal teams would approach area businesses to ask for donations but this year Holt-Dimondale Destination Imagination wanted to try a slightly different approach. Instead of simply asking local businesses for donations, Holt-Dimondale Destination Imagination introduced corporate sponsorships, which will offer several benefits to local businesses that choose to support the program in 2017-2018. In addition to supporting a worthwhile program that is helping to develop our future STEAM workforce, area businesses will benefit from a variety of promotional efforts designed to create exposure for their business/brand while generating positive PR for their organization and the Holt-Dimondale Destination Imagination program.

The big difference from years past is that the new corporate Holt-Dimondale Destination Imagination has an extremely sponsorship program will afford Holt-Dimondale Destination Imagstrong program and has sent several teams to DI Global Finals ination the opportunity to implement a comprehensive strategy to each of the past few years. The Kingdom Of Sweden • Sweden is located in a region called Scandinavia in Northern Europe. It shares a border with Finland to the east and Norway to the west and is connected to Denmark by a bridge-tunnel across the Øresund. • The official name of Sweden is “The Kingdom of Sweden.” It is the 3rd largest European Union country in terms of land area. • The north of Sweden earned itself the name of “The Land of the Midnight Sun” due to the sun never setting in summer months from May until mid-July. Even in the southern parts of Sweden, summer nights can be as short as 4 hours. In the fall and spring, Sweden is famous for the appearance of the Northern Lights, causing streaks of color in the late night sky in the north of the country. All types of skiing and snow activities abound in this region. • Sweden was the first country in Europe to create national parks. There are 28 national parks, as well as many nature preserves and wildlife sanctuaries. • Vikings (meaning “pirate” in an old Norse language) were a part of Sweden’s history. These sailors explored land and trade, as well as causing raids on foreign territories. In fact, all the Tsars of Russia until the last one, Nicholas II, were of Swedish Viking descent. • Sweden once ruled Finland and Norway, but lost control of Finland to Napoleon in 1809. The king at this time was forced to give up his throne as punishment. Sweden stopped electing kings in 1544, when the parliament changed. The crown was passed down through the king’s descendents from that point on. • Sweden is one of the least populated countries in Europe, with a population of approximately 9.5 million. • During the 1930’s, Sweden developed a welfare system known as “The Swedish Model”. This new system meant Swedes had access to publicly financed health care, child care, schools, elder care, help for the unemployed, and at least 5 weeks paid vacation per year. • There are 349 members of the Swedish parliament, called the Riksdag, and they appoint the next prime minister by voting. Even though there is still a king in Sweden, he has largely ceremonial duties and govern-

ment is run by elected officials. The country follows Constitutional Monarchy and Parliamental Democracy. • The currency in Sweden is the Swedish krona even though they are a part of the European Union. • Ever since the mid 1800’s, Sweden has been a neutral country, not taking sides in the two World Wars. • The Nobel Prize is named after a Swedish chemist, Alfred Nobel, who invented dynamite. The Nobel Prize Ceremonies are held in Sweden and Norway every year on December 10th. • Swedes have been known for a number of inventions, including the astronomical lens, zipper, marine propeller, refrigerator, computer mouse and pace-maker. • IKEA, a furniture making company that’s popular all over the world, was created in Sweden by a man named Ingvar Kamprod. • On Easter, children dress up as witches and go trick-or-treating! • The capital of Sweden is Stockholm, which is also its largest city. • Popular sports in Sweden include ice hockey and soccer. Sweden hosted the 1912 summer Olympics and the 1958 FIFA World Cup. The national ice hockey team won the gold medal at the 2006 Winter Olympic Games. • Swedish cuisine is traditionally simple. Fish, meat, potatoes, and dairy products are common in the dishes Swedes eat. • The first ice hotel of the world was built near the village of Jukkasjärvi, in Kiruna district of Sweden. Middle Ground! Hurdle over obstacles with variety of motivators Nothing will stop your motivation in its tracks like fear. Fear of failure, fear of success, fear of feeling controlled, fear of separation, fear of attachment. Overcome the obstacles to achieving your dream by pushing yourself out of your head and into action. Mel Robbins has developed a 5-second rule to do just that. When you find yourself making excuses or overthinking something, jumpstart yourself with a countdown. Like a rocket about to launch, 5-4-3-2-1-GO! Or you could even start counting at 3. Success isn't about who's smarter. The big idea is to focus yourself on the first step and work on it for 15 minutes. Choose a simple action. If your goal is to be healthier, 3-2-1GO for a walk; 5-4-3-2-1-GO add veggies to your snack. When you're working on your studies, plan ahead. Check thru your project and find ways to divide it into small tasks. Then 5-4-32-1-GO for the first task for just 15 minutes. Is your goal to organize a messy room? After you wake up 3-2-1-GO make your bed. Another way to push yourself out of your head and into action is to go deeper in your soul search. Spend quiet time with yourself meditating, journaling, and visualizing. Allow your vision to pull you along. Explore your pain and pleasure leverage as Tony Robbins suggests. Ask yourself 'pain-inducing' questions like "What will I miss out on if I drop this goal?" Follow with 'pleasure-associating' questions, such as "What are the enormous

Big goals are amazing to have and to achieve!

benefits that achieving this goal will bring?" See it in your mind and believe it. Paint the picture in such a way you have no other choice in the matter but to get it done. Incorporate as many motivators as you can, both intrinsic (from within yourself) and extrinsic (from external factors.) Personal achievements and personal interests are great internal motivators. Praise yourself not just for your past achievements, but also the hard work and character qualities it took to get there. Explore your personal interests through research, interviews, and hands-on experiences within your parents guidelines. Topics you are naturally attracted to are the best motivators. Look for how those fit into your current your goals, even if parts of it don't naturally interest you. Are you motivated when you feel acceptance, encouragement or pressure from others? These extrinsic motivators can backfire if you put your identity in the acceptance of others. Don't allow negative people to turn you into one. Concentrate on your strengths and set people in your life who can mentor you. Motivation is what gets us started, but habit is what keeps us going. As Aristotle put it, "We are what we repeatedly do." The prefrontal cortex is the part of the brain leading our focus and ability to change or take deliberate actions. The 5- or 3-seconds counting should overwrite your brain pattern so a new habit establishes. Want results? Doing, not thinking, is the key.
