Kids Of Kathmandu - Building School for Nepal

AN INTERNATIONAL PARTNERSHIP FOR NEPAL

BUILDING SCHOOLS FOR NEPAL

Kids of Kathmandu believes that a quality education is one of the most fundamental ways to improve the future for the children of Nepal. We focus on creating a solid foundation for an educated life, whether it be through building new schools or rebuilding earthquake destroyed ones, bringing technology into the classroom, providing tuition or offering nutrition and/or health resources to students in existing schools. Meeting these needs, children can grow into responsible, productive and mindful adults, finding their own true potential. We reach our goals by assembling and supporting the best partnerships, internationally and locally in Nepal.

K

ids of Kathmandu has been committed to working with marginalized and vulnerable Nepali children since our inception in 2010.

We began with a naive understanding and pure emotion, and we have learned a great deal in our years of work. We know and understand that it takes an informed, dedicated, diligent and trustworthy working team to achieve real results. In response to the April 2015 earthquake, our commitment has grown from our original orphanage project of 45 children to spearheading an international partnership rebuilding as many of the 5,000 destroyed schools as we responsibly can. Our international consortium has recently completed the first six new school building “systems. Each system consists of a new school at its center and a surrounding network of complementary services and supplies to support the children, their teachers and the community with such resources as purified water, health and hygiene awareness, individual solar lights, computers, and technology-training programs. These six schools have been designed by the worldrenowned architecture company, SHoP Architects, to provide a total of 1,200 children with a safe, earthquakeresistant and effective place to learn.

The School Buildings

K

ids of Kathmandu, SHoP Architects, our American and Nepali engineers have done a great deal of work to ensure that the schools

we rebuild in rural Nepal will be safe, effective and affordable. Our design and engineering work allows us and other groups to maximize our donors’ dollars to provide a 21st century educational experience to prepare the children for their future.

By focusing on their core competencies, each of our partners is able to dedicate the necessary time and resources so that

all our children can gain the maximum benefit from their education.

THE ENGINEERING and Quality Control

O

ur American engineering consultants, Office of Structural Design (OSD) was founded by Arun Rimal, a Nepali-born, Columbia Architecture School professor, who has continued to work in Nepal on comprehensive building

methods that ensure earthquake resistance as well as economical solutions to new buildings. Oversight of the construction of the schools is crucial to assuring that the engineering and safety features of the designs are strictly adhered to during construction. With Rooster Logic’s REMO project management software, our partners, funders, and most importantly the students can be assured that the schools are built to meet and then exceed the most stringent building codes in Nepal.

ll of the partner’s designs, engineering and construction management processes will be posted online for free for other individuals or

groups, with assistance from a local architect, to build one of our designs without incurring the cost of design development or engineering. The time and cost savings will allow groups to build more schools, in a shorter period of time for the foreseeable future. Cost for materials and services will also be posted so all stakeholders understand the true costs associated with building in Nepal. An accompanying online manual will lay out the materials and tools needed to build a school as well as the step by step process of proper fabrication techniques to erect the school building using trained contractors and local residents.

Kids of Kathmandu has been grateful for the outpouring of support we received following the April 2015 earthquake. With financial backing, we were able to devote ourselves first to relief work and subsequently to the planning, partnering and construction of our six new schools. With our partnerships in place, we are beginning to transform Kids of Kathmandu into a long-term sustainable model of growth and development that can continue to function as an impact amplifier with new partners well into the future. Kids of Kathmandu is looking to fund our operations and overhead costs in New York and Nepal to continue working to push our boundaries and achieve our goals. Our lean staffing and low overhead has allowed us to have an oversized impact compared to our relative size. As our project size grows into an important part of the rebuilding tapestry in Nepal, we need to be able to afford our staff to maintain our impact.
