2023 Stallions

With further development of our properties and equine portfolio, the future looks extremely exciting for Yulong. The investment we have made in bloodstock, infrastructure and staff has seen our increased commitment to Victoria and the Australian thoroughbred industry, ensuring we are breeding, rearing, and selling future racetrack headliners.

Comprising of four properties, we now have over 3,500 acres of fertile land bordering the Goulburn River in Nagambie. This past year has seen the addition of several thousand kilometres of fencing, along with a further 120 stables at our yearling facility, continuing the vision outlined by our principal Mr Zhang.

As our roster grows, our dedication to supporting our stallions with quality bloodstock will continue, sourcing broodmares from Japan, America, Ireland, England, France and Chile to help improve and strengthen our gene pool. Our passion for selecting bloodlines that have worked in Australia is paramount and combining them with our stallions we hope is a recipe to a successful future.

Our stallion roster has strengthened this season with the addition of two new horses, both sons of Champion sires, in Pierata and Diatonic.

Grunt, our foundation stallion, has made an impressive start to his career at stud, with his early winner Veight triumphing in the Group 2 VRC Sires’ Produce on only his second run. We were very impressed with the first foals by

our CF Orr Stakes winner Alabama Express, and they furnished into strong athletic individuals. To see the popularity of his progeny at the yearling sales, selling for up to $400,000, was very pleasing as we have great belief in this son of Champion stallion and sire of sires Redoute’s Choice.

Our Group 1-winning juveniles Tagaloa and Lucky Vega have both produced quality first crops and coupled with plenty of numbers, places them in a strong position for the years to come. We look forward to presenting their first yearlings at the 2024 sales this summer.

Last but no means least, our Champion sire

Written Tycoon has continued to produce highclass performers this season, headed by dual G1 winner Coolangatta, alongside a huge number of individual winners. With the crops bred at Arrowfield followed by two seasons serving elite mares here at Yulong, he has some impressive types set to grace the turf.

We are appreciative of the support received from breeders and look forward to continuing our relationships as well as building new ones. We look forward to welcoming you through the gates this year and wish you all the best for the coming season.

GLOBAL VISION

“We aim to bring new levels of transparency, professionalism, and innovation to the industry, while also fostering greater international cooperation and collaboration.”

Yulong was founded in 2011 by Mr Yuesheng Zhang and in recent years his vision for the organisation has begun to take shape. Aiming for a truly global reach from its base in Australia, Yulong has established itself with world-class facilities in Nagambie, Victoria.

Just as importantly, Yulong’s operations worldwide provide the basis for success. In particular, the acquisition of 40 now two-year-old horses in Europe has marked a significant step towards fulfilling the global ambitions.

As any breeder knows, victories on the racetrack lead to success in the breeding barn, and Yulong has taken the approach of providing the very best support for its growing stallion roster in Victoria.

Purchasing some of the best race fillies and mares in Australasia in recent years, they support a now sevenstrong roster which is given every chance of success. We look forward to many regally bred youngsters making their way through the sales ring and onto the racetracks in the coming years.

However, Yulong's ambitions extend beyond merely producing top-performing horses. The stud is committed to making a positive impact on the global racing industry as a whole. We aim to bring new levels of transparency, professionalism, and innovation to the industry, while also fostering greater international cooperation and collaboration.

The purchase of top-quality youngsters in Europe is a major step towards achieving this vision, and is significant because it will eventually expand some of the finest European bloodlines into Australia, which will enhance the quality of horses bred at Yulong Stud. It also represents a major investment in the global

racing industry, demonstrating Yulong's commitment to fostering greater international cooperation between breeders and trainers.

That vision paid dividends when Magical Lagoon became Yulong’s first Royal Ascot winner in the Group 2 Ribblesdale Stakes, on her way to cementing a first Classic success for the operation when taking the Group 1 Irish Oaks. The 2022 season was also marked by homebred My Whisper winning two Group races in Australia - a testament to Yulong’s breeding programme.

Yulong Stud's global vision is driven by a deep passion for the sport and a commitment to innovation and excellence. By investing in top-quality horses and building strong partnerships around the world, Yulong is laying the foundation for a bright and sustainable future for the industry.

ALABAMA

Redoute’s Choice x Lago Ovation, by Encosta De Lago

A magnificent son of Redoute’s Choice, Alabama Express was unbeaten at two and a Group 1 winner at three. He became the first three-year-old to win the Group 1 CF Orr Stakes (1400m) since All Too Hard (2013), a race won twenty years previously by his own sire. Further adding to the momentous victory, in which he displayed tenacity and talent, he is the only three-year-old weight-for-age winner by Redoute’s Choice standing at stud in Australia.

Resembling his exceptional sire in both looks and talent, his first crop of yearlings hit the sales in 2023 and made a great impression on buyers, selling up to $400,000 and averaging four times his initial service fee.

“The Ghadaayer colt we purchased from the Inglis Premier Sale is a cracking type, his movement is so fluent, he’s balanced and has all the hallmarks of a Guineas horse. We are excited about the progeny of Alabama Express, he was a brilliant winner of the CF Orr and has stamped his stock incredibly well which is something we love to see in a young sire.”

Diatonic is an outstanding son of Lord Kanaloa, who is the sire of the brilliant Almond Eye, Saudi Cup winner Panthalassa and Yulong’s own Group 1 Blue Diamond winner Tagaloa. A talented racehorse, Diatonic won on debut as a two-year-old, and would go on to twice win the Group 2 Swan Stakes (1400m), latterly in the fastest time in a decade - the same race won by exciting young sire Satono Aladdin. Bred on the same cross as Japanese superstar Almond Eye, he’s out of a mare by Sunday Silence; the most influential sire in Japan and sire of Deep Impact, Heart’s Cry and Sunday Joy.

Diatonic is a three-time Group 2 winner over 1400m and Group 1-placed. With the equivalent of $5.2 million in career earnings, he showed his class against the elite of Japanese racing. His pedigree has enormous depth, with Diatonic descending from the direct female line of Cosmah, the dam of Halo and a half-sister to Natalma, the dam of Northern Dancer.

“Diatonic won the same race as Rich Hill’s talented young sire Satono Aladdin, he’s by the same sire as our Blue Diamond-winning stallion Tagaloa, and was bred on the same cross as Japanese superstar Almond Eye. He’s also physically imposing, so we’re delighted to be able to support him with our top mares and offer him to the Australian market.”

ELITE 5X GROUP-WINNING SPRINTER/MILER

24

In the first six months of 2023, Japanese-bred stallions sired the winners of 24 Group 1 races in eight different countries.

INFLUENCE IN AUSTRALIA

3/5

Such is the dominance of Japanese bloodlines on the international stage, three of the world’s five richest races in 2023 were won by Japanese-bred horses. The richest of them all, the Group 1 Saudi Cup, was won by Panthalassa, a son of Lord Kanaloa.

LORD KANALOA

From his Japanese base, Lord Kanaloa has been hugely successful. He’s represented not only in his home country by nine-time Group 1 heroine Almond Eye, but in Hong Kong by Group 1 winner Danon Smash and, of course, in Australia by our scintillating Blue Diamond winner Tagaloa.

Lord Kanaloa’s bloodline isn’t the only one that’s proven successful in Australia either. In recent years, breeders have taken note of the strength of Japanese blood, capitalising on their years of investment by using sires such as Maurice (a son of Screen Hero), who has produced the brilliant Australian Group 1 winners Mazu and Hitotsu. Meanwhile, Brave Smash (by Tosen Phantom) emerged with his first runners in 2022/23 and led the first-season sires by winners in Australia.

From New Zealand, young sire Satono Aladdin (a son of Deep Impact) is making waves too. He has a bright future ahead, following a breakthrough season which saw the emergence of star two-year-old Tokyo Tycoon and his first Group 1 winner, Pennyweka.

With his excellent credientials, we are confident that Diatonic will be the next Japanese-bred stallion to make waves in Australia.

(NZ) Fee: $22,000 inc GST | 16.2hh | 2014

O’Reilly (NZ) x Ruqqaya (NZ), by Van Nistelrooy (USA)

As Yulong’s foundation stallion and a Group 1-winning son of champion stallion O’Reilly, Grunt provides the perfect combination of speed and endurance and is free of Danzig blood. Ranking elite amongst his generation, he retired with a Timeform rating of 123. His first yearling crop were well received throughout the 2022 Australian sales, and he made an excellent start with his first juveniles in the 2022/23 season.

From just a handful of runners, they were headlined by Tony and Calvin McEvoy’s exciting colt Veight. A six-length winner on debut, he then won the Group 2 VRC Sires’ Produce Stakes by two lengths at Flemington before finishing fourth in the Group 1 Sires’ Produce Stakes at Randwick. With his progeny expected to improve into their Classic year, an exciting new season awaits for Grunt.

“We have been loving the progeny of Grunt. They all seem to have extremely good brains, are physically very strong, and we’re excited about the young horses we have coming through our system, especially Veight. He is a horse that won a Group 2 at his second start and then took us up to Sydney for an outstanding run in the Group 1 Sires’ Produce Stakes. He is the type of horse that we are going to be targeting towards a Caulfield Guineas and possibly a Cox Plate - we are very excited about the Spring with him.”

The first Group 1-winning son of the elite European sire Lope de Vega to stand at stud in Australia, Lucky Vega was a fast and precocious juvenile from a family with high-class international racing appeal. On just his third start, he blitzed his rivals in Ireland’s premier two-year-old race, the Group 1 Phoenix Stakes, beating Laws Of Indicies and St Mark’s Basilica.

With previous winners of the Phoenix Stakes including breedshapers Danehill Dancer and Johannesburg, his credentials as a stallion are top-class, and he offers Australian breeders the chance to exploit the highly successful Lope de Vega/Fastnet Rock cross that’s produced the likes of Gytrash. His foals are stamped with his athleticism and strong hip, with his first crop including produce of Group 1 winner Unforgotten alongside Miss Barley, dam of Gytrash.

“Lucky Vega was a horse that interested us greatly. From a sireline that has worked so well in Australia and shown particular affinity with the Danehill line mares, he was an outstanding racehorse himself and great physically. Lucky Vega has all the ingredients to be a successful sire.”

Pierro x November Flight, by Flying Spur

Pierata is a magnificent son of the outstanding sire Pierro. A city winner and Group performed as a juvenile, he was Group 1-placed over a mile as a three-year-old before proving to be most brilliant as a sprinter, taking out the Group 1 All Aged Stakes. In a sensational demonstration of his incredible speed, Pierata won the Group 3 Sydney Stakes in a quicker time than Redzel’s $10m The Everest victory over the same distance, the next race on the card that day.

After soundly defeating Trekking in the $1 million Redzel Stakes, Pierata narrowly missed out on back-to-back All Aged Stakes when second in a stirring battle to Tofane in 2020. He mixed it with some of the world’s highest-rated sprinters of recent years, including Redzel, Classique Legend, Santa Ana Lane, Trapeze Artist, Bivouac, Brutal and Exceedance. Pierata’s first yearlings made an excellent impression on buyers this year, starting with a bang at the Magic Millions Gold Coast Sale where they averaged $247,500 - 5.6 times his initial service fee - and sold for up to $800,000.

“To acquire Pierata at this point in his career, just months away from his first runners, is incredibly exciting for both Yulong and the Victorian industry. We’ve seen how wellreceived his first yearlings were at the sales this year, and the early reports from trainers are full of promise.”

A two-year-old Group 1 winner by Japanese Horse of the Year, outstanding sprinter and exceptional sire Lord Kanaloa, Tagaloa was a brilliant and precocious racehorse. In winning the Group 1 Blue Diamond Stakes (1200m), he recorded the fastest time by a two-year-old at Caulfield since 2011 and as a three-year-old he scored the Group 3 CS Hayes Stakes (1400m) to solidify a superb racing career.

After proving popular with breeders in his first season at stud in 2021, his outstanding first foals led him to cover an even bigger book of mares in 2022. Physically exceptional, Tagaloa boasts speed and precocity, and offers a top-class outcross to the Australian breeder.

“As a breeder, there are a few boxes that need to be ticked when selecting a stallion; an excellent racetrack performance and the ability to train on being only a couple. Tagaloa is an example of this and it’s very promising to see his quality coming through in his first crop foals. Using Tagaloa as an outcross sire for Australian mares is clearly working and he is proving to be a valuable investment to our bloodlines here in Victoria.”

A Champion Sire, Written Tycoon stands his third season at Yulong in 2023, bringing proven star quality to an elite young roster. Australia’s leading first-season sire in 2010/11, and leading sire of two-year-olds in 2015/16, Written Tycoon continues to produce stakes winners year after year, and now has 12 Group 1 winners to his name. As expected, his legacy has gained traction. His Group 1 Golden Slipper-winning son Capitalist is now a Group 1-producing sire, and the 2022/23 season saw his son Written By sire two juvenile stakes winners from his first crop.

Throughout his time at Yulong, Written Tycoon has been supported by some of Australasia’s most prolific mares including 14-time Group 1 winner Melody Belle and top sprinters In Her Time, Viddora, Away Game and Greysful Glamour. Meanwhile, his yearlings continue to be hot commodities in the sale ring, averaging over $300,000 in 2023 and headed by a $1.4-million colt for the second year running.

RACE RECORD

“Written Tycoon has been a leading stallion in Australia for a number of years, producing some top level horses. Coolangatta has been one of those flag-bearing horses for him, it’s fitting that she will be his first European runner and hopefully his first successful one. He continues to cover some quality mares at Yulong that will only build on an already well-credentialed profile.”
