From the Executive Director: Access to the visual arts is vital to the soul of a community. It has been disheartening to witness so many esteemed museums across the country forced to lay off staff, or close their doors due to the economy. In 2008, we began a tumultuous year with an exhibition called Spared from the Storm. Little did I know how aptly that title would describe the next three years at the Kalamazoo Institute of Arts. As the Executive Director, I felt a deep responsibility to ensure the KIA would not suffer the same fate. I am not only beholden to the public to maintain their access to the visual arts, but to my staff who are integral to the success of this institution. It was imperative to me that any decisions made to maintain the KIA did not come at a cost to staff or our mission. I am proud to say the Kalamazoo Institute of Arts has not only survived the recession, we have thrived. Inside this triennial report, you will learn how the KIA has continued to seek ways to meet the needs of our community. We implemented new programs, including tours for the visually or memory challenged. We added new classes, new events, and expanded and improved our signature Art Fair. We constructed new gallery space to appeal to our Asian community and redesigned our Upjohn Mason Grandchildren Interactive Gallery to appeal to our youngest visitors. You will also read about some of the most influential exhibitions we have shown recently, such as The Wyeths: America’s Artists and enjoy a pictorial of some of our most significant recent acquisitions. I would like to take this opportunity to thank my dedicated staff and our creative board of directors for guiding the KIA through some tough decisions. I would also like to thank our members for their continued support, the numerous donors for their generosity and the sponsors who helped sustain many of our programs and events during this time. On behalf of the Kalamazoo Institute of Arts, I extend our deepest gratitude to the hundreds of thousands of patrons who have come through our doors. We are proud of our institution, and hope it will remain a source of pride for Kalamazoo for years to come. Deepest regards, James A. Bridenstine Executive Director

Presidents’ Messages Community resource. Communty service. Community focus. The Kalamazoo Institute of Arts’ commitment to the community was especially clear in 2010-2011, when we presented an incredible variety of activities and attractions, events and new programs. Some were geared to unique interests or special needs. Others were targeted for specific ages. Nearly all were presented at no charge. Open to all, everything we did was intended to enrich the lives of attendees and bring them in touch with art. Our wide-ranging programs best illustrated our service commitment. During those 12 months, we staged nearly two dozen programs, including the 60th annual art fair. We launched four new ones, too -- extending our reach to new audiences: • Touch Art Tours offers gallery visits for visually impaired individuals • Connections provides art experiences for adults with memory loss • Up Close lets visitors explore our ever-changing collection • Twice Monthly, Saturday Morning Story and Movie Short Times, gives youngsters a reason to visit our museum again and again The year’s exhibitions also reflected a community focus. From portraits of international heroes to historic Japanese woodblock prints to creations by regional artists, we offered something for everyone. The highlight of the year was The Wyeths: America’s Artists, which treated us to four galleries of paintings by three generations of one of our nation’s most iconic art families. The newly opened Joy Light Gallery of Asian Art enabled the KIA to bring more exhibitions to Kalamazoo, while the upgraded Upjohn Mason Grandchildren Interactive Gallery enhanced the institute’s appeal for children. At the same time, we also added new art school classes in response to requests from community members. We were able to successfully present so many exhibitions, programs and classes thanks to the financial and volunteer support of dozens of local companies and foundations and hundreds of members. Your contributions represent a true investment in our community. I am truly grateful, and amazed, by this generosity. It is an honor to work with the institute’s board of directors, volunteers, members and staff. There is no question that our community is a better place because of the Kalamazoo Institute of Arts. Courtenay VanderMolen President, 2010-11 KIA Board of Directors

Presidents’ Messages The KIA – like everything else – was rocked by the tough economic times that settled over our nation during 2008-10. As everyone and everything scaled back spending, the institute saw most of its revenue sources suddenly drop. A few of them dried up entirely! The sudden change was unsettling, prompting quick, creative actions by the staff and board of directors. Expenses were scrutinized and reduced. Improvements got put on hold. Staff salaries were reduced. And sound fiscal practices were maintained. Thanks to a great deal of sacrifice and belt-tightening, the institute came through relatively unscathed. Not a single staff member was laid off. Not one program was eliminated, and no service was interrupted. Surviving intact was no small feat! You see, many other art museums didn’t fare so well in the face of these financial challenges. A large number of them were forced to cut staff and reduce hours. Some sold artwork or took out loans, and a few even closed their doors. The turmoil in the nonprofit realm was unprecedented. Yet, to the casual observer, it seemed like business as usual at the KIA. During this two-year period, the institute never failed to professionally present programs and exhibitions of the highest quality in a first-class facility. From exhibitions on such giants as Norman Rockwell and Georgia O’Keeffe to one-of-a-kind programs, like a festival for young filmmakers, the variety of offerings remained at the same incredible level that we have come to expect. Keeping the quality high without disruption truly reflects the skills of a talented – and resourceful – staff, not to mention dozens of incredible volunteers and a dedicated board of directors. I was constantly impressed with the professionalism and commitment that all demonstrated. And it was my pleasure to work with them during these challenging times. As our economy continues to rebound, I am confident that the KIA is wellpositioned for an exciting future. It is truly an honor to serve on behalf of the KIA. N. Dean MacVicar President, 2008-09/2009-10 KIA Board of Directors

accessions

PAINTINGS From 2008 to 2012, generous gifts contributed to the significant growth of the KIA’s collection. The largest donation of art was a bequest from the estate of Charlotte Collins, who, along with her husband Charles, actively collected prints from then up-and-coming artists in the 1960s and 1970s. The gift of 80 prints includes works by artists now widely recognized as giants of 20th-century art: Josef Albers, Helen Frankenthaler, Robert Rauschenberg, Roy Lichtenstein, Claes Oldenburg, Frank Stella and others. In 2008, Tiffany & Co. honored the retirement of its design director, John Loring, by donating funds dedicated to the purchase of Tiffany objects at the KIA. With this money, the KIA acquired a Woodbine Table Lamp, a tall paperweight glass “Narcissus” vase and other fine objects. The creation of the Tiffany Fund was the impetus for additional donations; we thank Tiffany & Co., Mrs. Richard C. Oughton, Mrs. T. Suffern Tailer and Paige Rense for their generous gifts in support of the Tiffany Collection. Additional gifts of works of art include Richard Pousette-Dart’s painting, By the Sea, given by Pfizer Inc., and eight works on paper by artists such as Salvador Dali, Diego Rivera and Arshile Gorky given by Lynn Bradeen. Financial contributions from anonymous donors enabled several significant purchases in American art. We acquired paintings by Charles Alston, Milton Avery, William Merritt Chase, Robert Gwathmey and Eastman Johnson, along with sculptures by Edmonia Lewis, Frederick William MacMonnies and Deborah Butterfield. With the opening of the Joy Light Gallery of Asian Art in the fall of 2010, the KIA began to actively collect East Asian art for its permanent collection. Highlights of our Asian art acquisitions include a black-glazed “Oil Spot” bowl from 13th-century China and a pair of painted screens by Japanese artist Kano Masunobu (1625-1694). We received a significant gift of Chinese paintings and calligraphy from Dr. Albert Chang and his late wife Betty Chang. In photography, the museum acquired portfolios of works by two early-20th-century artists: Edward Steichen and James Van Der Zee. Other photographs include gelatin silver prints by Clarence H. White, Arnold Newman, O. Winston Link, Robert Mapplethorpe and Candida Hofer. As the collection grows, it enhances both our exhibitions and teaching. It adds aesthetic value to the lives of those residing within the greater Kalamazoo community. We are most grateful to those who have contributed to the growth of our collection.

Exhibitions 2009 – 2011

Some of the KIA’s finest exhibitions were presented from 2009 to 2011. Our ongoing commitment to support local artists is evident in our annual West Michigan Area Show, High School Area Show, Young Artists of Kalamazoo County and the biennial Kirk Newman Art School Faculty Review. During the last four years, our galleries were filled with more than 40 exciting exhibits; many of which highlighted our permanent collection. 2008 wrapped up with Spared from the Storm: Masterworks from the New Orleans Museum of Art. Works included European and American painting, drawing and sculpture by such worldfamous artists as Tiepolo, Degas, Kandinsky, Gauguin, Matisse, Monet, Picasso, Pollock, Sargent and many more. Organized by the New Orleans Museum of Art, this travelling exhibition was created to benefit its Katrina Recovery Fund. The KIA took advantage of an opportunity to host a second major loan exhibition just three months later. Georgia O’Keeffe and Her Times: American Modernism from the Lane Collection of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston debuted in May of 2009. Featuring masterpieces by Georgia O’Keeffe, Charles Sheeler, Arthur G. Dove, Stuart Davis, and Marsden Hartley, the Lane Collection is among the greatest public collections of American Modernism. The KIA organized a complementary photography exhibition called Through the Photographer’s Lens: O’Keeffe and Her Circle. Visitors were able to “meet” the artists featured in Georgia O’Keeffe and her Times as their personalities and lives were captured by the photographer’s lens. Among the most ambitious exhibitions the KIA has ever organized, The Wyeths: America’s Artists was a culmination of twenty months of planning, marketing and installations. On view in early 2011, with works loaned by the Farnsworth Art

Museum, Brandywine River Museum, Terra Foundation for American Art and three private lenders, the exhibition featured the paintings and drawings of N.C. Wyeth, Andrew Wyeth and Jamie Wyeth. In addition, paintings by Andrew’s sisters, Carolyn Wyeth and Henriette Wyeth Hurd, were also included, a unique feature enjoyed by many of the Wyeth enthusiasts who attended the exhibition. Victoria Wyeth delights visitors to the Wyeth exhibition

Timothy and Joy Light

One of the most significant events for the collections and exhibitions department was the construction and unveiling of a new gallery space on the lower level of the Institute. Timothy Light honored his wife Joy with a donation to the Kalamazoo Institute of Arts to construct The Joy Light Gallery of Asian Art, a gallery space devoted specifically to Asian art. Since its opening in the fall of 2010, through support from the Joy Light East Asian Art Acquisition and Exhibition Fund, the gallery displays three exhibitions annually, featuring scrolls, sculpture, woodblock printing, ceramics, painting and more. School In today’s economy, art classes have fallen into a category of luxury that many people have chosen to forgo. This has presented plenty of challenges to the KIA’s Kirk Newman Art School. As the KIA’s most significant source of earned income, the Kirk Newman Art School has faced incredible pressure to find ways to increase enrollment - a feat it has admirably accomplished! The launch of the revised website kiarts.org, which includeds the ability for students to register for classes online, was one of the most formative changes at the school in years. Enrollment that first year increased more than 30%, with nearly 50% of enrollment occurring online by spring of 2010. Today, more than 70% of registrations occur online. Keeping on trend with technology has impacted the types of classes offered as well. While core classes with an emphasis on traditional and academic techniques like painting, drawing, ceramics and sculpture remain the backbone of the curriculum, the addition of graphic art courses has proven to be a rapidly growing market for the school. New classes including Cell Phone Photography, Digital Video, Creating Digital Negatives and Video Game Design have rounded out a robust class roster of digital design offerings. In an effort to reach a broader audience, additional classes were added, such as foreign language, Spinning, Creative Writing, and interior and exterior home design. This has drawn a new type of audience to our facilities who may have never considered taking an art class prior. The school has also made efforts to revitalize its already impressive studios with new equipment, including new computers and new software for the digital design courses, and new looms to serve the needs of fiber arts students (the most popular and first-filled courses). Upgrades have also occurred in the ceramics department with improvements made to the kilns to accommodate larger firing loads. WiFi has been added to the studios, allowing instructors to use laptops and iPads as additional teaching tools. It is a testament to the faculty and staff of the Kirk Newman Art School that the residents of Southwest Michigan continue to register for the more than 300 classes offered annually, despite the recession. The school is also proud to have awarded hundreds of scholarships to adults and children. As the an integral part of the Kalamazoo Institute of Arts, the Kirk Newman Art School has proven itself to be resilient and progressive. Its future success seems assured.

Museum Education The Museum Education department has the responsibility of drawing in visitors to learn more about various art forms and introducing them to our Permanent Collection and exhibitions. Despite the challenges of the last three years, programs like Portfolio Day, Teen Filmmaker Festival, Sunday Funday, Young Artists of Kalamazoo County, Art Scholars (formerly Senior Day) and ARTbreak remain popular with the public. In an effort to draw a larger, more diversified crowd and to keep programs fresh, Museum Education improved existing programs and added new offerings. Some of the highlights of the last three years include: Appraisal Day Is great-grandma’s brooch real diamonds or paste? Appraisal Day has become one of the most popular annual events at the KIA. Visitors from across the Midwest come to have works of art, jewelry and antiques appraised by experts from Detroit’s DuMouchelle’s auction house, who kindly donate their services for this event. Guests are allowed to bring a maximum of three items for a verbal appraisal. Proceeds benefit future programs. Touch Art Tours One of the most significant additions to our educational programs is the introduction of Touch Art Tours. The brainchild of Frank Wolf, KIA docent and retired WMU engineering professor, Touch Art Tours provides the visually impaired an opportunity to experience art through their hands as opposed to their eyes. Specially trained docents are on-hand to assist patrons as they explore art with gloved hands and answer two questions. The program is free and is the first of its kind in Michigan. Connections Tours for Adults with Memory Loss Another remarkable new program provides entertainment and education for adults with memory loss issues like dementia and Alzheimer’s disease and their care givers. These docent-led tours of the KIA Collection provide a calm, quiet atmosphere where the vitors can enjoy the art, and engage with the docent and others in respectful conversation. Guests may choose from a variety of themes to experience and the tours are conducted on Mondays, when the museum is closed to the public. Touch Art and Connections Tours are both supported by the Harold and Grace Upjohn Foundation and EATON Corporation. Art-full Fun and Learning Preschool Tours This specialized tour program allows Preschool children an opportunity to discover colors, shapes, animals, or faces in art during a theme-based tour that features interactive visuals and a fun picture book. Schools may add a hands-on project for $2 per student and then visit to the Upjohn Mason Grandchildren Interactive Gallery for free to enhance their visiting experience. Preschool Tours receive support from the Harold and Grace Upjohn Foundation and Santreece Foundation. Teen Filmmaker Festival Nearly ten years old, Teen Filmmaker Festival has become so popular, the KIA could no longer accommodate the large crowd that would attend to view the winning submissions. Luckily, the Rave Theatre stepped up and now hosts the event, free of charge! In 2012, every seat was filled to view the comedies, dramas, action-adventure and animation movie shorts produced by teens from across Michigan. Sponsored by the Kalamazoo Institute of Arts, Kalamazoo Public Library, and Public Media Network, Campaign Pictures and the Rave Theater, Teen Filmmaker Festival has become one of the KIA’s signature events. New Interactive Gallery with gallery activities When the Joy Light Gallery of Asian Art was constructed in the fall of 2010, the Upjohn Mason Grandchildren Interactive Gallery had to be moved in order to accommodate it. This provided an excellent opportunity to update the children’s play-n-learn space by eliminating antiquated equipment and to make learning about art relevant to today’s technology-adept children. While some of the old favorites remain, like Steve Curl’s “found art” robot project, the giant magnetic puzzle board and the popular Pin Pression, new projects were added to round out the experience. Our younger guests are welcome

to enjoy digital painting and drawing on one of two of our digital easels, practice the art of Asian woodblock printing, sketch one of our rotating subjects in our display case or snuggle up to read a story in our little readers section. We also added gallery activities that parents and caregivers can participate in with their children, including scavenger hunts in our Permanent Collection. Designed for various ages, this program makes learning about artists and art forms fun! Admission to the Interactive Gallery and all related programs is free.

Development The last three years have been a challenging time for the Development Department. The downtrodden economy made it difficult to secure the kind of grants, donations, sponsorships and memberships received in years prior. There was also great transition of staff during this time. Angelnette Thomas, former Development Coordinator, and Darlene Pontello, former Membership Coordinator, both retired after decades of service; and a new, full-time Event Coordinator position was created to help drive fundraising opportunities. The Development staff’s plan to raise funds included the creation of new events as well as maximizing the potential of already successful events, starting with the biggest one of the year. The Kalamazoo Institute of Arts Fair was expanded to two days, opening on a Friday night with a beer garden and live entertainment. Participating artists were more carefully selected, prizes increased to attract new artists and great attention was paid to drawing crowds with Gallery Shop musical acts, live acrobatics, dance, face painting, balloons and more. In 2011, the fair celebrated its 60th The KIA Gallery Shop has done an excellent Anniversary, and was one of the best ones to date. job of supplementing current exhibitions with Greater attention was paid to improving other popular fundraisers, including Art & All That Jazz. A fresher mix of bands was selected to draw a more diverse audience and the Gallery Shop began featuring jewelry trunk shows as an added draw. New events such as Simply Elegant, where guests were taught ways to create intricate home décor on a budget and “date night” events like Wyeth & Wine brought in a younger crowd. Bus trips to other museums and a smattering of membership-driving promotional events provided additional funding. In 2010, the KIA also held its firstever garage sale. All of the main floor galleries and the auditorium were chock-full of items, and the two-day sale netted more than $14,000. In marketing, two of the most significant examples of growth include the development and launch of the new website, kiarts.org, which enabled the public to purchase tickets and register for classes online for the first time, and the development of a new program called Billboard Art. The brainchild of marketing executives at Adams Outdoor Advertising, the Billboard Art program gave the KIA a way to support local artists with a contest where artists could compete to have their art shown on one of ten billboards for one year. These billboards would rotate among 1,300 regional sites during that time, making this a priceless advertising opportunity for any artist. Winners also received a landing page hosted on kiarts.org as well as a celebration at the fall Art & All That Jazz, where they had the opportunity to sell their work to the public. This unique program provided the KIA an excellent opportunity to support local artists, while heightening public awareness of our driving involvement in securing Kalamazoo as an artists’ community. The future of Development looks bright as the addition of the new Membership Coordinator Jay Simon, and Event Coordinator Heather Ricketts promise increased opportunities for attracing a new audience and establishing our membership for years to come.

artwork, books and promotional pieces for sale. However, when it comes to its biggest profit driver – jewelry; the Shop is in a league of its own. Only here will you find unique gifts from local artists like Meg Tang and Ligita Samsons, among others. The Gallery Shop is also one of the only places in Southwest Michigan where the discerning shopper can find the whimsical work of Orna Lalo and pieces by top-selling designer Anne Marie Chagnon. Trunk shows and local artist jewelry sales have brought in new patrons, while promotional sales have kept loyal customers coming back for gifts, accessories and art designed by local artists. All purchases at the KIA Gallery Shop support the Kalamazoo Institute of Arts, and local artists. Library As in years past, the Mary and Edwin Meader Fine Art Library has been a great resource for books, periodicals, DVDs and various archival materials on all things art-related. KIA members and students alike take advantage of the multitude of materials available for study. To attract a younger audience, the library has added free children’s programming, including Saturday story-time and short films. Children are welcome to attend with their parents and enjoy as Librarian Dennis Kreps reads, and sometimes sings and plays guitar, for a captivated audience. The library has also gone digital, enabling the public access to digital images of art, periodicals, magazines and other materials via ARTstor, Art Abstracts Online and Michigan E-Library (MeL). Going digital has made the Kalamazoo Institute of Arts library a valued resource for art students across the country, thus expanding our reach.
