Sunburst Youth Camp Alumni Cambodia (SYCA)

Day 1 Date: 13 September, 2008 Member: 49 (Organizers: 11 Participants: 38) Absence: Kang Prak and Lor Bun Heng At 6:30, after having gathered in front of Panhasastras University of Cambodia, all the participants got on the bus to go to pick up 3 Singaporean participants at Phnom Penh International Airport. Breakfast was also given on the way there. The program kicked off with a game called “Selfintroduction”. Everyone was told to self-introduce themselves and then recalled the name(s) of the one(s) who had self-introduced before them. Once finished, the program continued with a brief presentation about the camp’s schedule and then all was having fun singing and telling jokes until 10:45 when Miss Davy explained to everyone about the skid show to be performed for the children at slum areas. We arrived at Sihanouk Ville at 12:40 when we got off and went to have lunch at Mlob Mearn restaurant.

After lunch, we went to check in at O’Cherte arl hotel at 2:00. At 2:20, we set off to the slum areas at Mlob Ta Pang organization. Since there are two slum areas, and one is located quite far from another; participants were divided into two groups. Group 1 (Slum 1), consisting of 25 people, was facilitated by Miss Srun Sovan. Group 2 (Slum 2), consisting of 25 people, was facilitated by Miss Ly Seavhuong.

Since one of our main purpose was to raise education awareness among children there, we had planned to go to meet the children aged from 6 to 11 studying at the community schools run by Mlob ta Pang organization. The main activities intended for the two schools were the same. We began with a brief self-introduction to all the children, followed by a skid show performed by the participants. The skid show entitled “The Benefit of Knowledge” was our mean to illustrate some of the most important things that education can bring to one’s future.

Youth Camping Program (13-14, September, 2008)

Sunburst Youth Camp Alumni Cambodia (SYCA) After the show, the children were grouped into small teams of 7 to 12 members, and all the participants were divided to go to each group to carry on the next activity. Children were asked to talk about their future plans and how they wanted to pursuit them; meanwhile we also played some games to create a sense of fun and unity among them. At the end, before biding farewell, we contributed some stationery (books, pencils, rubbers) and noodles to them on the hope encouraging them to continue their study.

At 6:30, we started the party at O’Chertearl beach. The meal included sea food barbecue and soft drinks. For entertainment, there was dancing with Khmer Traditional and international music. Although everyone was fully engaged in all activities during the day, they did not seem to lack energy for the entertainment program in the evening. Everyone was having fun dancing and teaching our Singaporean friends some Khmer Traditional dance moves like Rom Vong, Saravan, Lam Leov, etc. Also, there was a “Mr. and Miss Camp beauty contest which the contestants were told to do something to show their talent and at the same made the party even more enjoyable.

Day 2 Date: 14 September, 2008 Member: 49 (Organizers: 11 Participants: 38) Absence: Kang Prak and Lor Bun Heng

The program started at 7:00am when everyone gathered at room 314 to watch a short picture video presentation summarizing day 1 activities and then shared some comments and reflections. Later at 8:00am, we checked out of the hotel and got on the bus to go to the point where the following activity was to be held. Breakfast we also given on the way there.

The activity of the day is called Urban Challenge – expired by the one included in SYC and a TV program called Amazing Race. Participants were divided into 4 groups, each facilitated by one organizer who prepared this challenge program (Group 1: Miss Srun Sovan, Group 2: Ly Seavhuong, Group 3: Bun Chamroeun, Group 4: Yi Longdy and Mon Mliss). Each group was given a piece of papers containing the information about the places where they were supposed to find, some questions related to those places, and some instruction about the thing to do at each place such as taking photo with a certain statue or in front of certain building, etc. The group which finished all the tasks and came to the meeting point first won. The challenge began at 8:15 and completely finished at 12:00pm. The winning team was group 4.

Later we had lunch at the meeting point of Urban Challenge, Chnay Chhey Chumnaes restaurant (Victory Beach restaurant). Once finished, participants got on the bus to O’Chertearl beach to spend some time swimming and relaxing. This free and easy time went on until 2:15pm when we set off back to Phnom Penh.

Youth Camping Program (13-14, September, 2008)

Sunburst Youth Camp Alumni Cambodia (SYCA) On the way back, each participant was told to come up to the front and express some comments and feedbacks about the whole camp. Overall, the participants felt very strongly that this camping program was very useful as it allowed them to have the first-hand experience with the children at slum areas where some of them have never been to before.

One of the participants said: “It was my first time going slums; it really opened my eyes to see the real situation in our country and encouraged me to do my utmost to help”.

As for the second main activity which was the Urban Challenge, though it was a bit tiring, everyone agreed that it was enjoyable and even educational. “I have come to visit Sihanouk Ville many times before, but I have never paid much attention to the other historical or administrative places besides the beach and the hotels. Though admittedly it was very tiring, this camp broadened my mind by allowing me the chance to know a lot more about Sihanouk Ville. Moreover, on the way to each destination, we also had the time to talk to new friends and got to find out more about one another which I think was very important to improve our socialization”, said a female participant.

Although the event was very successful, not everything went well as planned. One thing was about the timing of each activity which sometimes exceeded. Moreover, at the slum areas, the instruction about what the participants should have done was not detail enough which from time to time made some of them become sidetracked. However, all in all, the overall feedbacks we received were very positive and encouraging.

Overview about Sunburst Youth Camp Alumni Cambodia (SYCA) The SunBurst Youth Camp Alumni in Cambodia was formed on the 9th of June, 2008 after Mr. Ny Sokhour, SYC 01 has informed to all Cambodian ex-SYC participants about SYC Singapore’s initiative to form an alumni network in each participating country. On the day of our first meeting at Pannasastra University of Cambodia, while most of the current participants from 2006 to 2007 came to attend the meeting, only a few from the earlier batches were present, for the majority of them have either gone abroad or get occupied with their job or study. However, we were still lucky to have at least one member from each batch, and below is the contact list of the current SYC Alumni Cambodia.
