TYPOGRAPHY “Freight is a practical attempt to unify Johann Michael Fleischmann and Stanley Morison’s signature text types. Although these historical faces appeared more than 150 years apart, they are remarkably similar in their embrace of the Dutch traits of economy, glister and crunch. Freight Text, Sans and Micro are the result of a seven-year quest to describe these virtues across a range of weights and morphologies, suitable for use across a variety of modern media.” - FontSpring.com I chose Freight Sans and Freight Text for two main reasons. The first is that they are a designed to be used together. The second is partly because of what is articulated in the quote above. Freight is a typeface designed by bringing together and fusing two type styles from very different eras. This is a similar concept to what Quiksilver does by researching technologies from other industries and using them to innovate in their own. It also reflects the the fusion of performance and styling that is at the core of Quiksilver’s product development.

FINAL LOGO I chose the simpler, and clearer, of the two final options as the final logo. The triangular logo looked like an arrow first, a Q second, and a mountain last. The final logo eliminates the arrow and focuses on the Q. I chose to use color to reference the idea of mountain and wave. The blue represents the water while the grey represents the mountain as well as the literal meaning of the name Quiksilver. Literally, “quicksilver� is liquid metal mercury. Mercury was believed to be the a magical element analogous to the human spirit by alchemists. The final logo also brings in the actual Quiksilver brand name with a custom wordmark based on the design of the square Q logo. This wordmark ideally could also be used on its own, although more sparingly than when it is paired with the graphic mark.

The logo’s construction is actually quite simple. The central graphic Q comes from two squares and two, parallel, lines at a 45 degree angle. The lines create the cutout that divides the mark into the body and the tail. The word mark is built around the same dimensions as the graphic Q. The Q form within the word mark is changed, so as not to duplicate the graphic mark, but still references the form of the graphic mark. While the word mark is designed at full size, it is scaled down to a total width of 4x for the full/combo mark.

ALTERNATE LOGO VERSIONS The new Quiksilver logo has three main versions: the graphic mark, the word mark, and the combo mark. Each will be used in different situations and at different sizes. In addition to the three main versions of the logo, there are also unique versions of the logo for various brand divisions within the company. These unique versions will also include a graphic mark, word mark, and combo mark. The colors used will also be division specific.

DESCRIPTION This division will focus on the selling of Quiksilver’s assorted performance gear and apparel offerings. Products are developed in tandem with Quiksilver Labs. Quiksilver Retail will also oversee any branded stores and relationships with third-party resellers.

DESCRIPTION This app will be focused on more demanding adventures that take careful plannign and organization. This is not a casual app to find a good hiking trail, it is an app to help navigate and plan a multiple day climbing trip.

DESCRIPTION Rentals will have Quikisilver products whenever possible, but partnerships will fill any gaps in product offerings. That could include the likes of: tents, sleeping bags and pads, climbing gear, skis, snowboards, boots, helmets, bikes, camper vans, and anything else relevant.

DESCRIPTION These are full service high schools with a unique athletic department. Student-athletes will train in their sport with the goal of competing at the highest levels.

SIMILAR TO Sports Basement Gear Rentals. HOW IT’S DIFFERENT Quiksilver Rentals will have custom offerings tailored for each location’s available kinds of adventuring. MISSION CONNECTION Renting is sometimes easier or more affordable, giving more people more access to more adventuring.

SIMILAR TO IMG Academy. HOW IT’S DIFFERENT IMG focuses on traditional sports like soccer, basketball, and tennis. Quiksilver will focus on the action sports the brand is already connected to (ski, snowboard, etc). DESCRIPTION Trek is meant to inspire it’s readers to try things, go to new places, find new ways to adventure, and, if they choose, potentially share those experiences. It won’t be sport specific. Content will be chosen by quality, not based on topic or length or even format.

DESCRIPTION Pro Tour is about creating as many opportunities as possible for our audience to engage their passions. Some will compete, some go to watch, and others may watch a live stream online (Quiksilver Studios).

DESCRIPTION Highlighting and promoting independant content creators in a variety of ways. The kind of content will dictate the method of promotion.

DESCRIPTION An example would be the Shitbox Rally in Australia. Participants race across the outback, in buggies costing a max of $1000. Sponsorship money goes to their charity of choice. Prize money also goes your charity.

SIMILAR TO RVCA Artist Network Program. HOW IT’S DIFFERENT RVCA works with artists to create lines of clothing. We will focus more on digital media, film, photography. MISSION CONNECTION Creators encourages content creation around the creator’s passion, pushing them to push that passion forward.

SIMILAR TO Events that raise money for charities, chosen by participants, through sponsorships and donations. HOW IT’S DIFFERENT A lot of these events are either raising money for charity or a competition, not a lot are both; we want to do both. DESCRIPTION Quiksilver Adventure Camps are overnight youth camps where kids and teens can be introduced to activities and become the next generations of adventurers. SIMILAR TO Other youth overnight camps, typically summer camps. HOW IT’S DIFFERENT Quiksilver Adventure Camps will operate in both summer and winter, and will have more focused activites. that are targeted for our audience. MISSION CONNECTION Quiksilver Adventure Camps enable the next generation of adventurers by introducing these kinds of activities and teaching campers the skills needed to participate.

XP.2 | Preparation INTRO Quiksilver Internships are a way to help people who want to work in related industries, do just that. DESCRIPTION Not everyone with these passions is an elite athlete. Quiksilver Internships will be mostly media focused, but covering all non-athlete roles within these industries, such as film production, editing, and action photography. SIMILAR TO Any large company internship program (Nike). HOW IT’S DIFFERENT While companies like Nike have similar programs, they operate in a wider range of traditional sports industries, where as Quiksilver operates in more specialized fields. MISSION CONNECTION Quiksilver Internships are a way for participants to discover career paths that tie directly to their passions.

It will be similar to Red Bull’s Red Bull Media House, though with more grounded content. Rather than someone base jumping off a satellite to create headlines (which Red Bull did) Quiksilver Studios content will be created as a means for our community to stay connected with their passions when they cannot be actively participating. What they produce will be more than a marketing tool. Quiksilver Studios serves the new brand mission by keeping our community tied to their passions when not actively engaged, making it easier for them to keep said passions in their lives consistently. Studios will also serve as inspiration for the more extreme part of our community. These films, or series, could provide ideas for the next backcountry ski spot, the next mountain to climb or sea to dive. This also serves the Quiksilver’s new mission.

Nomad Journal is a magazine that is meant to give inspiration to its readers. This magazine is a collection of experiences, shared within our community to give each other ideas, share our best, or sometimes worst, adventures. There are other outdoor magazines and other travel amgazines, but nothing quite as focused, but still open, as Nomad Journal. 43

Magazines like “Bike,” “Surfer,” or “Powder,” are all sport specific. Others may be medium specific (a travel photography magazine). But Nomad is focused in the sense that is is by adventurers for adventurers, but what those adventures are is still open. This is not a magazine where you may find a good casual hiking spot. It is a place where you may hear about somebody’s favorite tucked away surf spot, even if it isn’t the most well known or popular spot, and why. Nomad serves Quiksilver’s mission by inspiring the next adventures of our community memebers.

The foundation’s work will relate mostly to sustainability because that is an issue crucial to the future of adventuring and exploring our world. An organization like POW (Protect Our Winters) could be comparable, but Quiksilver Foundation will operate on a much larger scale. Quiksilver has teh resources to work with cities, school districts, national parks, nature preserves, ski resorts, and a host of other potential partners on a wide range of sustainability initiatives. As adventurers, if we want to keep exploring and continuing to have these new, and revisited, experiences, we need a world to explore. This is one way that Quiksilver Foundation serves the brand’s mission. Another is that the varous events put on by the foundation will give our community more opportunities to engage with issues that matter to them and are tied to their passions, while also giving them an opportunity to give back to the places that make those experiences possible, and maybe even inspire a new adventure for a new cause.

This is the division with Quiksilver that is responsible for the fusion of high performance and bold styling to innovate and push Quiksilver’s industries of operations forward. Labs will find new technologies from wherever they find them and adapt them in ways that allows Quiksilver to harness those new technologies in ways our competitors are not.

This division serves the new mission by enhancing the equipment, gear, and tools needed for adventuring, in turn enhancing the experiences themselves.

These kinds of internship opportunities are found at tons of large companies, in related and unrelated industries. While Nike may have similar programs, they operate in a wider range of traditional sports industries, where as Quiksilver operates in more specialized fields. This program operates as a way for the younger part of our community to build their lives around their passions, directly serving the Quiksilver’s new mission and the original vision of the brand’s founders.

Quiksilver Internships are for young adventurers looking to find potential career paths connected to their passions. Not everyone who loves snowboarding is good enough at it to go pro or build a career around the act of snowboarding. But some do have other talents that lend thmselves to other career paths within those industries. Kelly (a hypothetical 17 year old intern at Quiksilver) may not be good enough on a board, but she is good enough behind a camera to pursue a career in action sports media. These internships are for Kelly and others like her.

Quiksilver Academies are most comparable to the IMG Academy in Florida. Both IMG and Quiksilver Academies are full service high schools. What separates them from traditional high schools is the make-up of the student body and the athletic department. IMG and Quiksilver Academy students are all athletes of some kind.

Although not all the student athletes that graduate from a Quiksilver Academy will end up having professional athletic careers, they will all be given the training and education needed for that to happen. Student athletes will have access to healthier foods and nutrition planning, specialized fitness routines customized for them as an individual withing their sport, and they will compete against peers at the highest levels. These academies serve the new mission statement by giving more opportunities for young adventurers to do just that, as well as helping them push their abilities to maximize the quality of experience.

This is where Quiksilver Academies differentiates itself from IMG. IMG focuses on traditional sports like basketball, football, soccer, and tennis. Quiksilver academies will focus in sports like surfing, skiing, snowboarding, non-traditional sports that also have an avenue for professional careers. Quiksilver academies will be smaller than IMG because of the sports it focuses on.

The locations chosen for Nomad Hostels is what will separate them from their alternatives. While most hostels are in urban environments to maximize potential customer base, Nomads will be tailored to serve our community of adventurers, with resources to maximize adventuring opportunities and quality of experiences. Because we choose to serve fewer, but serve them better, we can situate ourselves right in the heart of great adventuring spots across the world. Byron Bay, Australia, for some of the best surfing. Jackson Hole, Wyoming, for top tier skiing and snowboarding. Icelandic countryside with access to black sand beaches, canyons, waterfalls, dormant volcanos, ice caves and glaciers, and scuba diving between tectonic plates, all within a few hours drive. Nomad Hostels will also serve as community hubs for adventurers of all kind and creed. Those traveling alone, or with a group, will be able to connect with other like minded adventurers, leading to sharing of past experiences giving inspiration for more adventures yet to come. If you are staying at a Nomad Hostel, you know why. These are base camps from which we go exploring. In addition to the direct benefits for those staying there, Nomad Hostels will be built and maintained by the internal brand division Quiksilver Sustainability, taking every feasable measure to minimize our brand’s, and community’s, environmental footprint. Nomad Hostels serve the brand mission by giving more access to better adventuring to more of our community, as well as giving them a place to meet and share inspiration for future adventures to come.

​ hile it’s great when you can tie in helping a good cause, W not everything has to have that requirement either. Some of these events could be simple, with winners receiving top-of-the-line Quiksilver gear.

While this is one example of a potential event there is really no restriction on what they could be. There isn’t even anything limiting these competitions to time and date events. One competition could revolve around the submission of videos containing whatever specific content was required of submissions.

​These kinds of events serve the new brand mission as a consistent source of adventuring opportunities for all of our community to take advantage of, or inspiration from.

The Quiksilver Pro Tour is about creating as many opportunities as possible for people to engage with the sports that are at the core of many of our passions for adventure. Sports that require an adventurer’s attitude for athletes to push themselves to their peak performance.

The different levels of events will also give more opportunities for engagement from adventurers of a variety of age, skill level, experience, and knowledge. A local showcase may give a teenager with a dream of surfing professionally an chance to be seen by someone who could help make that happen. While a top pro level event will be broadcast live online by Quiksilver Studios, so even when we can’t be there in person, we can stay connected to our passions, enhancing each new experience that follows. The Pro Tour serves the Quiksilver mission by giving more opportunities from our community to participate in their passions. For some that will be as a participant, others a spectator or commentator.

While the tour will undoubtedly be compared to any other surf of ski/snowboard competition, this tour is not sport specific, but a variety of events in various sports taking place in the locations relevant for those sports. This series is a celebration of all these sports as a means of adventure. The tour will have events for mountain biking, wake boarding, skateboarding, but also sports that may not be typically seen through a competitive lens, like rock climbing or cliff diving.
