Making Memories in Hammond
South Shore Arts proudly announces that we once again have a matching fund campaign to increase and enhance our everykid program! Every dollar you donate will be matched by an anonymous donor. Thanks to individuals and businesses who contributed to a similar campaign last year, South Shore Arts raised $72,309, all of which was matched by our donor! This funding allowed South Shore Arts to reach nearly 17,000 children and their families and expand several of our most successful programs, even in these times of financial insecurity. This year our donor has increased the challenge and will match up to $100,000 of money contributed by you! Arts education has been proven to be critical in a child’s learning and development. First Lady Michelle Obama recognizes the need. “My husband and I believe strongly that arts education is essential for building innovative thinkers who will be our nation’s leaders for tomorrow,” she says. “It’s our hope that we can all work together to expose, enrich, and empower Americans of all ages through the arts.” The South Shore Arts everykid program is an extensive series of on-going arts education partnerships with schools, social service agencies and parks and recreation departments throughout Lake and Porter counties and south suburban Chicago. Thanks to the on-going support of our anonymous donor, the Legacy Foundation and Porter County Community Foundation—along with a host of individual and corporate donors—South Shore Arts and its partners can offer these programs to participants at no cost. The Polar Express program, for instance, based on Chris Van Allsburg’s beautifully illustrated children’s book, brings children’s literature to life. Using shapes to construct a polar landscape and train, students follow step-by-step instructions to complete an art project. The project meets Indiana Standards in Visual Arts, Language Arts and Math. A copy of the book, provided to each classroom, allows teachers to reinforce the connections made between artmaking and reading. Polar Express originated as a collaboration between South Shore Arts and the School City of Hammond in 2003 and has since served over 8,000 pajama-clad students at Substation No. 9. Last year, the program was expanded to East Chicago, where it was conducted in school classrooms. This year, with additional match money, another 5,000 students will experience Polar Express in Portage, Gary,

Girl Scout Art Day Camp at the Center for Visual and Performing Arts Merrillville and Lake Station, in addition to Hammond and East Chicago! Making Memoriesâ&#x20AC;&#x201C;A Family Enrichment Program, the first region-wide collaborative among multiple arts organizations in local libraries, also continues to grow with expansion into more communities. Making Memories brings families together through reading and the arts: bookmaking, writing, music, poetry, visual art and drama. Other arts organizations participating in the program are Books, Brushes and Bands for Education, Hammond; the South Shore Chamber Orchestra, Valparaiso; and the Towle Theater, Hammond. The program is designed for families with students in grades two through six. Feedback from the participants indicates that they value the quality time spent together, and are deeply impacted by the experience as they increase their appreciation for the arts. Each program location hosts ten families who participate at no cost, and each session includes a meal to give participants a chance to sit down and spend time together. Five books are featured and a copy of each is given to the families to keep. If you know a family who could benefit from such an experience, contact South

The Northwest Indiana Symphony Orchestra launched its 69th season with “DIVAS,” a combined opening concert and gala, at The Venue at Horseshoe Casino, on Friday, September 25, 2009. The concert featured the full orchestra, sopranos Emily Hindrichs and Angela Mannino, both alumni of the Jacobs School of Music at Indiana University, and the 120 volunteer members of the Northwest Indiana Symphony Chorus. There were beautiful arias by Puccini, rousing choruses by Verdi and a triumphant finish to the concert with Modeste Moussorgsky’s “Pictures at an Exhibition.” Randy Newman’s “When She Loved Me,” Leonard Bernstein’s “Glitter and Be Gay,” and Rodgers and Hammerstein’s “You’ll Never Walk Alone” were among the evening’s other showstoppers. Indiana University Northwest, celebrating its 50-year anniversary, was the concert’s Presenting Sponsor. Chancellor Bruce Bergland was recognized for his dedication to the arts in Northwest Indiana. Chairing the Gala Committee were Sue and Andy Arnold, and the Women’s Association of the Northwest Indiana Symphony Society (WANISS) was honored for its dedication and support of the Symphony, for which it has raised more than $750,000 over the last 47 years! The gala benefited the music and education programs of the Symphony, including the Northwest Indiana Symphony Orchestra, Youth Orchestra and Symphony Chorus, raising $60,000! Symphony education programs serve approximately 12,000 children and youth each year.

Once again, the chefs and staff at the Horseshoe Casino provided exquisite service and delicious food. Eating, drinking and socializing lasted for the first two hours of the evening, before guests took their seats at their gala tables to enjoy the concert. As is now tradition, John Cain, Executive Director of the Symphony and South Shore Arts, led a champagne toast hosted by Sue and Andy Arnold, heralding the start of the new season, as well as the evening’s concert. A chance to become a Guest Conductor during the 2010 Summer Music Festival complete with a lesson by Maestro Kirk Muspratt was auctioned at intermission. Watch for aspiring conductors Amy & Dennis Han, Gayle and Dennis Flynn, and Mary & Dave Ryan at one of next summer’s concerts. First prize raffle winners won a private dinner for eight donated by Gamba Ristorante, with entertainment by a Symphony quartet donated by the WANISS. Horseshoe Casino donated a VIP Package for four at The Venue, Albert’s Diamond Jewelers provided a beautiful pair of David Yurman blue topaz, 14k gold and sterling silver earrings, and WANISS gave away a fabulous 22-CD music collection that was coupled with wine and gifts from El Taco Real and It’s Just Serendipity. Special thanks to the committee, board and staff for a job well done. Free Tickets Available to Symphony Concerts for Lake County High School Students
constituents, and to develop younger audiences for the Symphony’s concerts.
Thanks to a grant from the Legacy Foundation, Lake County’s Community Foundation, the Northwest Indiana Symphony is now able to offer free tickets to Lake County high school students to attend the two remaining 2009-2010 season classical concerts, scheduled for Saturday, February 13, and Saturday March 20, at Highland High School, as well as the Cole Porter tribute concert scheduled for Thursday, May 20, at the Star Plaza Theatre.
Tickets are available for students and their teachers or chaperones. The Symphony can accommodate groups. If students want to attend on an individual basis, they can pick up tickets in advance by coming to the Symphony office between 9-5pm weekdays, or they can come to the theatre box office on the day of the concert at least 30 minutes before the start of the concert. Tickets will be issued to them and one adult chaperone. Students are required to show a valid high school ID.
The grant will enable the Symphony to provide a positive social networking experience for high school music students, to assist schools in satisfying Indiana State Standards for music education, to make the Symphony’s concerts more accessible to its younger

Make a Difference in the Lives that Follow: Keep Art and Music Alive in Perpetuity More than sixty percent of people contribute to non-profit organizations during their lifetimes, while less than ten percent continue that contribution in perpetuity through a planned gift. Making a lasting contribution to charitable organizations like South Shore Arts and the Northwest Indiana Symphony isn’t just for the wealthy. Every day, people from all walks of life leave charitable gifts in their wills. In doing so, they make a tremendous difference in the world they leave behind. All it takes is a legal will and the good will or simple codicil to your will to make important charitable work live on forever. Top Ten Things You Can Do to Keep Art and Music Alive in Perpetuity 1 Prepare a will. Fully 50% of Americans die without a will. Without one, you lose control of the assets you worked a lifetime to acquire. 2 Leave gifts in your will for charitable organizations like South Shore Arts and the Northwest Indiana Symphony that have made a difference in your life. Fewer than 10% of households in the United States actually make a charitable bequest. Imagine the positive impact in our community if everyone made even a modest donation to a favorite nonprofit organization. 3 Leave a specific dollar amount or a percentage of your estate to South Shore Arts or the Northwest Indiana Symphony. The provision can be part of a new will or added to your existing will as a codicil. 4 “Endow” your annual gift by making a bequest equal to 20 times that amount. 5 Name South Shore Arts or the Northwest Indiana Symphony as the beneficiary of your IRA or pension plan. 6 Name South Shore Arts or the Northwest Indiana Symphony as the beneficiary of a new or existing life insurance policy. 7 Make a gift of a new or existing life insurance policy to South Shore Arts or the Northwest Indiana Symphony. 8 Remember deceased loved ones with memorial gifts to South Shore Arts or the Northwest Indiana Symphony. 9 Encourage family members and friends to leave gifts to South Shore Arts or the Northwest Indiana Symphony in their wills. 10 Ask your financial advisor to include charitable giving as part of his/her counsel to other clients. 14

REGIONAL PARTNERSHIP INITIATIVES
Workshops to be Held for Arts Organization and Art Project Funding Three grant workshops will be held in January for Indiana nonprofit organizations seeking funding for operating support and projects to be conducted between July 1, 2010, and June 30, 2011. Funding is available to arts organizations and non-arts organizations providing arts programming and projects in Lake, Porter and LaPorte counties. Workshops will be held at the following locations:
Arts Organization Support I (AOS-I) applicants can apply for up to $10,000 if their operating income does not exceed $500,000. Arts Organization Support II (AOS-II) applicants can apply for up to $20,000 for arts organizations with operating income of $500,000 or greater. Arts Project Support applicants can apply for up to $5,000 for funding for an art project.

The Indiana Arts Commission (IAC) recently announced that two Region 1 (Lake, LaPorte and Porter Counties) artists are among 33 throughout the state to receive career development assistance through the agency’s Individual Artist Project grants for Fiscal Year 2010. “Once again, more than 200 Hoosier artists competed for just over $65,600 available in grant funds,” said IAC Executive Director Lewis C. Ricci. “There are more than 19,000 Hoosiers who consider the arts as their primary career. These artists are but a sampling of the great creative talent working and contributing to the creative industry in Indiana.” Earlier this year volunteer citizen peer panels, convened by the IAC, reviewed more than 200 project proposals. The Individual Artist Program grants were approved June 12, 2009, during the Commission’s quarterly business meeting in Spencer County, Indiana. The following artists from Region 1 were approved by the Commission. Funded artists were eligible to receive grants of up to $2,000. Visual artist Janet Bloch from Chesterton was awarded a grant to make her competitive in preparing public art proposals by funding professional photography of her paintings, purchasing Photoshop and taking computer classes in state-of-the-art software. Visual artist Shari Pettis from Gary Shari Pettis, Service, Abundance, Convenience, Oil on canvas was awarded a grant to subsidize studio rental within a public building designed for learning and working in multiple artistic disciplines.
