SUPER-ficial! A Chris Cosnowski Retrospective
“South Shore Arts is pleased to present SUPER-ficial!, the fourth installment of our Outstanding Midwest Artist Series, this time featuring contemporary Chicago painter, Chris Cosnowski, who depicts Americana in a photo-realistic style, producing paintings that are at once lifelike in detail and humorous in concept. Cosnowski’s artwork is historical by nature. His work recalls Western classical art through its use of figurative sculpture as subject matter. Conversely, the subjects are derived from the world of toys and Americana, recalling the Pop Art tradition. The dialogue between these two traditions creates a tension between high and low culture.
In the artist’s words, “Trophies and plastic figures make up the primary subject matter of my work. These cast, monochromatic figurines are reminiscent of classical sculptures, as well as being quintessential objects of Americana. Coins, stamps, bullets, balloons, patches, jacks, etc., are some of the other trinkets that find their way into my bins. Collecting (I should say amassing) these objects is an integral part of the creative process for me.” Cosnowski utilizes and exploits the intrinsic value and symbolism of these treasured keepsakes. His paintings envision a nostalgic no-holds-barred America. The works allude to the idealism of American values, yet somehow the narratives speak volumes about shifting ideals via the represented objects. What appears to be solid and significant is trumped by the discovery that the metal is an illusion. These beloved objects aren’t gold but merely sprayplated plastic with no real weight—an apt metaphor for a country in economic turmoil due in part to its gluttonous pursuit of all that glitters. Distinct perspective and meticulous precision can be seen in Cosnowski’s hyperrealist paintings. One part observation, one part criticism, the artist weaves together the most superficial, as well as splendid, aspects of American culture. His mastery of allusion and juxtaposition of content creates a dialogue that far exceeds the simple compositions at hand. Cosnowski uses empty backgrounds to call more attention to the objects, not unlike the religious icons of the Middle Ages. The large expanses of color add emotional and psychological facets to the paintings. His minimalist compositional leanings and religiosity add seriousness that is also at odds with the subject matter. Finally, there is a tension between the difficulty of the realistic painting style that the artist employs and the silliness of his subject matter. The ridiculousness becomes a point of focus. An underlying sense of humor prevails, particularly when the work is put in the context of fine art. The titles of the works are in keeping with this obvious humor through the use of puns and art historical references. Chris Cosnowski received his MFA in Painting from Northwestern University and his BFA in Illustration from Columbus College of Art and Design in Columbus, Ohio.

He has been a member of the American Academy of Art faculty since 2003. He currently teaches figure drawing and painting. His work has been exhibited in New York, Chicago, San Francisco and London and has appeared in publications such as New American Paintings (Midwest Edition), American Art Collector and Chicago magazine. Cosnowski currently lives and works in Chicago and is represented by Linda Warren Gallery in Chicago and Lyons Wier Gallery in New York. South Shore Arts premiered the Outstanding Midwest Artist Series in 2007 with Call of the Wild: Paintings by Michael Noland. The second exhibit in the series was presented a year later with Excellent Hostess: Selected Paintings by Lorraine Peltz. In 2010, the third exhibit in the series was Some Assembly Required: A Margaret Wharton Retrospective. In addition to expanding South Shore Arts’ reach as an exhibition venue, our objectives in presenting this series include exploring the creative roots of contemporary visual artists; introducing seminal exhibitions to the public; strengthening the relationship among artists and their audiences in the Midwest; and documenting each of these exhibitions through the publication of accompanying catalogues. The exhibit will run from June 16 through September 2, 2013, with a reception for the artist on Sunday, June 23, from noon to 3pm, during the free Family Arts Festival at the Center for Visual and Performing Arts.

Program Teaches Students to Value Art, Live Substance Free
Art is a resource that can be used to communicate in countless ways, and a new South Shore Arts program does just that.
Value Art, Live Substance Free was developed by South Shore Arts in collaboration with freelance artist Deborah Landry and Indiana University Northwest (IUN) students pursuing degrees in nursing, criminal justice and social services with funding from the Lake County Substance Abuse Council. The program is based on the philosophy that art is a tool that can be used to teach all subjects from a holistic approach. With this in mind, students from the Hammond Academy of Science and Technology (HAST) used art to explore life skills that would supply them with healthy coping mechanisms in dealing with life’s challenges rather than turning to drugs or alcohol. Ms. Landry based the program on the guidebook Life Skills by Gilbert J. Botvin, Ph.D., for its “whole person” approach. The book not only addresses drug and alcohol abuse but subjects such as self-image, decision-making, anger management, anxiety, effective communication, making new friends, social skills and resisting advertising pressure as well. Research has shown that young people are less likely to start using drugs and alcohol if they are given the knowledge and taught the skills necessary to live happy, healthy and successful lives. HAST students in grades six through eight met with the artist, teacher Debbie Fenno and interns from the Master’s in Social Work program at IUN for fifteen weeks. The interns provided one-on-one attention to the HAST participants and were given the opportunity to create lesson plans and content for a 70-page book that was created as part of the program. Ms. Landry developed art lessons that fit seamlessly with each life skill outlined in the guidebook. For units six and seven on alcohol and drugs, for example, Ms. Landry employed a sensory deprivation project showing the students how drugs and alcohol disable the ability to use their senses. The project consisted of students making a series of clay animals. With each new creation, students would be deprived of one of their senses. First, they wore rubber gloves while trying to mold the clay. With the second clay animal they wore rubber gloves and earplugs. The third time they wore rubber gloves, earplugs and “drunk” goggles. After the sensory deprivation experiences, the students were given clay to create an animal with the use of all of their senses. Each of the fifteen sessions incorporated art into a life skills lesson. The end result was a video presentation, the instillation of window art in the school’s foyer and the publication of a book. Eight vinyl window clings now greet students and guests as they enter the building with a colorful compilation of student artwork created during the program. The book is comprised of student work, lessons learned during the program, ideas for living healthy and resources for anyone needing help with drug and alcohol related problems. At an unveiling celebration, all 240 sixth, seventh, and eighth grade HAST students viewed the videos and artwork and received a copy of the book. The videos, book and window art were all designed to give students tools to communicate with their peers, their parents, their teachers and their community. Using a holistic approach combining art with the introduction and learning of life skills, the HAST students have themselves become teachers of life skills.
PARTNERING WITH THE USO The popular South Shore Arts program The Skin You Live In has been conducted in schools throughout Northwest Indiana for the past four years. On February 24, 2013, the program was presented at the Union League Club in Chicago, where it touched the families of service men and women at an event sponsored by the Union League Club Authors Group, the USO and WTTW Chicago. Approximately 100 children and their families spent the day meeting the author and illustrator of The Skin You Live In. Each received a signed copy of the book and created an art project with South Shore Arts. Author Michael Tyler read from the book and illustrator David Lee Csicsko demonstrated his unique drawing style. Afterwards, South Shore Arts instructors led the children in an art project in which each participant chose a skin color that matched his or her own, creating a self-portrait in the style of the book’s illustrations. The Skin You Live In uses beautifully descriptive words in clever rhyme to deliver an important message of social acceptance to young readers. Mr. Csicsko’s vivid illustrations capture a variety of children’s activities from all cultures, everything from swimming in the ocean, hugging, and catching butterflies, to eating birthday cake. This delightful children’s book offers a wonderful venue through which parents and teachers can discuss important social concepts with their children, while celebrating the ways in which we are unique and similar. South Shore Arts developed The Skin You Live In as a literacy-based art program in 2010 and has each year vastly increased the number of children who experience this lively story with a powerful message.

Former Concertmaster Leaves Generous Bequest
“You don’t have to hear Jennie Gaudio play the violin to know that she is an excellent musician,” Beryl Ann Brownell wrote in the Gary Post-Tribune in the mid-1940s. “Strange as this may seem, you know that Miss Gaudio is a fine artist just in the way she holds her violin—as if it were a living thing. The audience which will gather at 8 o’clock Sunday night in Seaman hall will notice this delicacy of movement when Miss Gaudio is the soloist with the Gary Civic Symphony Orchestra.” When the Northwest Indiana Symphony Orchestra held its first concert in Gary on December 7, 1941, Jennie Gaudio (Wilkinson) was its concert mistress. When the Symphony’s 70th anniversary was celebrated in December, 2011, tribute

was paid to Mrs. Wilkinson, who had passed away in October at the age of 96. In January of this year, the Symphony learned of a $40,000 cash bequest from Mrs. Wilkinson’s estate. Two violins and three bows were also left to the Symphony, including an English violin bearing an Alessandro D’Espine label, circa 1900, valued at $25,000 and a German violin, circa 1920, valued at $2,000. A violin bow by Lamy of Paris was valued at $8,000. The bequest was facilitated by Mrs. Wilkinson’s nephew, Donald Pasko, and attorney Russell Millbranth of Valparaiso. A graduate of Horace Mann High School and the Chicago Conservatory of Music, where she later served on the faculty, Mrs. Wilkinson also served on the faculty of the Sherwood Music School in Chicago and taught privately in Northwest Indiana. While in high school, Mrs. Wilkinson was the winner of the Indiana University State Contest as well as the Lake County South Shore Music Festival Contest where she appeared as a soloist on a festival concert. In 1936, at the age of 21, Mrs. Wilkinson toured as the violin soloist with the Monte Carlo Opera Ensemble on a trip that took her to 15 states. She also performed as a soloist at Orchestra Hall with the Sherwood Symphony and at the Commencement Concert for the Chicago Conservatory. Mrs. Wilkinson was a member of the Pro Musica Quintet and also the Chicago Artists Trio which played at Carson Pirie Scott department store. “Miss Gaudio, concert-master with the symphony, has always loved music and when 11 years old asked her parents for a violin,” Ms. Brownell wrote in the Gary Post-Tribune some sixty years ago. “Thinking this difficult for a child, the Gaudios bought a mandolin for their daughter, who was broken hearted with their choice. “The old expression ‘I’d rather play than eat,’ aptly fits Miss Gaudio who proved the statement by bringing the interview to an early close after one of her lessons in order to dash to symphony rehearsal . . . minus her dinner.” Sixty years later, the Northwest Indiana Symphony Orchestra is grateful for the many gifts of Jennie Gaudio Wilkinson, both those she bestowed during her lfetime and now beyond.
South Shore Summer Music Festival The 2013 South Shore Summer Music Festival will feature free concerts by the Northwest Indiana Symphony in six communities across Northwest Indiana during July and August. Cirque de la Symphonie to Open 2013-14 Season
The Northwest Indiana Symphony and Music Director Kirk Muspratt have unveiled the 2013-14 Concert Season. Six diverse concerts will be performed, including three classical and three pops. The season will kick off on Friday, September 20, with the Opening Concert and Gala at The Radisson Hotel at Star Plaza. This year’s concert will feature Cirque de la Symphonie, a collection of contortionists, jugglers and aerial artists performing gravity-defying feats of spell-binding grace and beauty, choreographed to popular classical and modern music. These world-class performers from all over the globe perform in, around, and even above the orchestra, leaving audiences breathless. In addition to the concert, guests also have the option to add the Opening Concert Gala package to their evening for pre-concert dinner and drinks at the Radisson Hotel at Star Plaza Celebrity Ballroom and a post-concert champagne and dessert reception at the theatre. The Gala package is $115 per person in addition to the concert tickets. Proceeds benefit the Symphony’s music and education programs. The season continues with Halloween Pops, back by popular demand. The Symphony Youth Orchestra and Symphony Chorus will both be on hand, as everyone gets in on the fun, especially Maestro Muspratt, whose costumes are always a fun surprise. Prizes will be awarded for audience costumes as well, so start planning yours today! The annual Holiday Pops, always with near sell-out crowds, returns in December as a cherished South Shore holiday tradition. The Symphony’s classical concerts kick off on Valentine’s Day with a lightly staged production of Puccini’s passionate Tosca. March will see the exciting and dynamic pairing of Dueling Pianos, featuring two grand pianos nose-to-nose on stage with two award-winning pianists performing. Our recently introduced “piano-cam” offers a close-up view of guest artists performing intricate musicianship on the big screens! The season will close with Mahler’s First Symphony and the return of violinist Corey Cerovsek, playing Barber’s Violin Concerto on his Milanollo Stradivarius of 1728. The Symphony Chorus will be featured in a performance of The World Beloved: A Bluegrass Mass, featuring bluegrass ensemble Monroe Crossing. This piece blends elements of classical mass with modern choral sophistication, encompassing poetry and traditional bluegrass instrumentation in an exhilarating musical experience. Chorus director Nancy Menk and members of the Chorus recently performed the Mass at Carnegie Hall in New York City. The concert will be held on Friday, April 4, 2014, at The Auditorium at Bethel Church. Subscribers can compose their own series by picking only the concerts they wish to attend. South Shore Arts is pleased to offer quality art classes at three locations in a wide variety of disciplines and media. Classes are available for ages birth through adult. The gifted instructors at South Shore Arts are primarily working artists with degrees in their respective fields. In addition to the many classes offered at its headquarters in Munster’s Center for Visual and Performing Arts––including drawing, painting, pottery, calligraphy, cartooning and photography––South Shore Arts maintains two branch locations. Substation No. 9 in downtown Hammond offers classes in drawing, airbrushing, painting, Photoshop, Illustrator, and a senior art workshop. South Shore Arts’ Crown Point location just north of the historic courthouse square offers drawing, painting, pottery, a senior art workshop, and Intro to Manga, among others. A variety of children’s workshops and one week camps are offered in Munster and Crown Point.
