Making Things Better; Trying New Things Ceramics Studio Improvements

The South Shore Arts Education Department believes that our students deserve inviting and inspiring spaces in which to make art. Over the last two years, we have been removing clutter, cleaning surfaces and organizing materials. It is not always obvious when we clean out a cabinet or scrub a countertop, but when we purchase new equipment or move furniture, people can’t help but notice. In December, a new Cone Art kiln was installed in the ceramics studio, necessitated by the unfortunate demise of our long-time primary kiln. We were able to limp along for a few sessions with the help of a back-up kiln; however, that kiln was much smaller and unsuitable for a program that regularly runs six class each session—three adult classes and three children’s classes. With the addition of the new kiln, we decided to dedicate more studio space to our growing ceramics program, moving all eight of our potter’s wheels to give students more room to throw vessels while enjoying the natural light that streams in through the floorto-ceiling windows in the studio. To accompany these major facility upgrades, the adult ceramics students have been creating beautiful square tiles to be installed as a large mosaic wall mural in the ceramics studio. Now with nearly 50 tiles completed, we intend to

have phase one of this ongoing mosaic project up on the wall in time for the Family Arts Fest on Sunday, February 23. Thank you to all of the instructors and students who have contributed to our efforts to improve the studios. We could not do what we have done without your commitment, passion and patience.

Teen Arts Board

Last year, thanks to generous support from BP, South Shore Arts launched a new everykid program: the Teen Arts Board. The everykid program is a collection of arts activities

through which South Shore Arts works to increase youth access to the arts by removing the obstacles that often stand in the way. The Teen Arts Board invites high school students throughout our service region to be active participants in our programs and events. The new Teen Arts Board has already initiated a window mural project in one of our studios at the Center for Visual & Performing Arts, met with South Shore Arts staff to learn about different roles within our organization, and traveled to the Art Institute of Chicago (AIC) to visit the collection and meet with the Associate Director of Auxiliaries. As one of the Teen Arts Board members said on the way home from the AIC, “When I signed up for this Teen Arts Board thing, I thought that we were just going to do fun art stuff, but we’re learning about careers in the arts too, and that’s even better.” Summer Scharringhausen, Education Program Manager, has reported that the teens have a lot of big, exciting ideas. Some of these, fun as they may be, currently fall outside the bounds of what is immediately feasible—going to Europe, for example. As a new group, they are still getting to know each other and are just beginning to figure out what it is they want to accomplish. European travel plans aside, we are excited to help them make that idea, whatever it is, a reality. Everyone at South Shore Arts expects big things from this group during the next year. We are up to almost ten Teen Arts Board members to date, but we can accommodate at least ten more. Involvement with the Teen Arts Board is completely free. In

addition to being a great way to get involved with the arts, participation in the Teen Arts Board comes with a few perks. For example, during the Winter Session of classes at South Shore Arts, we were able to offer free enrollment in our studio arts classes to Teen Arts Board members. For information about joining the Teen Arts Board, visit www.southshoreartsonline.org/teen-art-board, or contact Summer Scharringhausen, Education Program Manager, at summer@southshoreartsonline.org, 219/836.1839, ext. 103.

Education Program Manager Summer Scharringhausen recently joined the South Shore Arts staff as the Education Program Manager. Summer has completed a BA in Visual Arts Education and an MPS in Arts and Cultural Leadership. She has taught visual arts in public schools for more than ten years, worked in gallery management for more than seven years,

MANHART/GIBBONS FAMILY MEMORIAL ENDOWMENT FUND

and has been creating art for more than 20 years as a mixedmedia painter. Summer was born in Dallas, Texas, lived most of her life in Minnesota, and recently relocated to St. John, Indiana. As a kid, her favorite subjects were math and art. She was fortunate to have parents who encouraged both of those interests. Summer believes that communities are strengthened culturally and economically with a vibrant arts scene. In addition to being an artist and teacher, she is also a wife, a mother of two young boys, and a person who honors God and nature. Summer began her career as an art teacher and, over time, has worked more and more with arts and cultural nonprofit organizations. For the majority of her teaching career, she worked as the founder and teacher of the art program at a charter high school for immigrant and refugee students in Minneapolis. During her time teaching there, she became involved with Altered Esthetics, a nonprofit gallery, as the Gallery Director and Board Chair. From there, she accepted a position as Program Manager at MacRostie Art Center, managing exhibitions and education programs. Summer is thrilled to be working now as the Education Program Manager, managing art classes for kids and adults, caring for the studios and facilities, coordinating educational outreach, and facilitating new programs such as the Teen Arts Board.

Families are invited to enjoy an artistic and creative fun-filled Sunday of “wild” adventures at the Center for Visual & Performing Arts from 10am to 2pm on Sunday, February 23. The CVPA, which celebrated a 30th anniversary in 2019, is hosting its first Winter Family Arts Fest, a day of entertaining arts activities and exciting free events presented by the Northwest Indiana Symphony, South Shore Arts, Theatre at the Center and Trama Catering. South Shore Arts invites guests of every age to discover their wild side as Maurice Sendak: The Memorial Exhibition, a national touring show, comes to Munster after appearing previously at over 40 venues across the U.S., including Chicago’s Museum of Science & Industry and the Disney Family Museum in San Francisco. The exhibit features 50 illustrations by the world renowned author whose iconic children’s story and picture book, Where the Wild Things Are, first published in 1963, is still one of the top ten most borrowed books from the New York Public Library. South Shore Arts classrooms and studios will also welcome all ages to use their hands and imaginations for ceramics and printmaking workshops, as well as an opportunity throughout the day to dream up some new “monsters,” by joining a “create your own creature” drawing activity. Theatre at the Center will feature the return of popular Disney Channel TV star Ralph Covert of “Ralph’s World” on stage at 10am for an entertaining and interactive morning show ideal for parents and children ages 3-8. Tickets are $10 for adults and $8 for children 12 and younger. In the afternoon, the TATC stage—which is celebrating a 30th anniversary

in 2020—unveils the Chicagoland premiere of Almost Heaven, a musical revue of the life of beloved singer John Denver. Tickets for this show are $46. Tickets for TATC performances are available at the lobby box office, at www.TheatreAtTheCenter. com or by calling 219/836-3255. There will also be free activities, including backstage theatre tours along with 30-minute theatre classes and workshops. Chef Joe Trama and the Trama Catering team invite guests to bring their appetites to the elegant CVPA dining room, where they can feast on a sumptuous Sunday buffet while also enjoying the musical renderings of pianist Walter “Waz” Lisek. Seatings are from 11am to 2pm. The weekly lavish Sunday Champagne Brunch is just $25 for adults, $12.50 for children 4-11, and $4 for children under 4. There will be arts and crafts vendors throughout the building, including Elite Sweets and Lady’s Gourmet Popcorn, along with special appearances by author Rochelle Lazauskas, who will be signing and selling copies of her new book, Moey and the Kitty in the City; Reggy the Mascot from the Mascot Hall of Fame; and favorite storybook characters from Theater for Young Audiences productions. Other highlights are free face-painting and, for a nominal fee, the chance to create an original tie-dye T-shirt by All Tyed Up. In the lower level atrium, guests can enjoy musical melodies performed by the Northwest Indiana Youth Orchestra, along with informational booths about classes, performances and all of the on-going activities at the Center for Visual & Performing Arts. For a complete schedule of activities and further information, visit www.cvpa.org or call 219/836-1930.

Karen Raab, John Cain and Judith Root-Stiles

John Cain and Jim West’s annual Holiday Reading kicked off the most festive season of the year at the Center for Visual & Performing Arts on Tuesday, November 19, when over 300 guests attended Don We Now Our Gay Apparel, a celebration of yuletide nostalgia featuring stories by John Rowell and New Yorker cartoonist David Sipress. The readings may have taken multi-culturalism to a new low, but they made audiences laugh with their sweet perspectives on the past, each from a child’s point of view. Chicago actor Alex Iacobucci, wearing a full-length martini dress, set a slightly raucous tone for the day as he graciously passed “hors d’oeuvres,” consisting of Cheez Whiz on Ritz crackers, during the wine hour in the gallery. Judith Mayer’s inventive graphics for the invitation and other promotions helped to spark a keen interest in this year’s event and carried over into decorations, place cards and accessories! Special thanks to long-time event sponsors Vanis Salon & Day Spa and Community Healthcare System, as well as raffle donors Vanis Salon & Day Spa, Strack & Van Til, Albert’s Diamond Jewelers, South Shore Convention & Visitors Authority, El Taco Real, It’s Just Serendipity, Indiana Ballet Theatre, Hammond Community Theatre and the South Shore Arts Gift Shop! Symphony Celebrates with a

HUGE

December!

Donna Krupinski, Maggie Reister Walters and Cathy Bellamy

The Women’s Association of the Northwest Indiana Symphony Society (WANISS) held its 31st annual Festival of Trees luncheon on Wednesday, December 4, with nearly 300 guests on hand to help raise funds for the Symphony. Last year WANISS contributed over $30,000 to the Symphony, and this year, to help boost the amount of money raised, each vote for best decorated tree cost $1 with voting continuing into January. WANISS members continued their new tradition of hosting an annual Children’s Festival of Trees Breakfast on Saturday, December 7. In addition to visiting with Santa and voting for their favorite tree, youngsters experimented with musical instruments at an “Instrument Petting Zoo.” Proceeds from the event went to the Edith Root Scholarship Fund, which awards grants to music students to defray the cost of attending summer music camps. The big week finally arrived on Monday, December 9, beginning with a final dress rehearsal event for guests of Holiday Pops concert sponsors NIPSCO and BMO Harris at the Halls of St. George. Three performances of the Symphony’s most popular annual concert followed, December 11 through 13, with over 2,600 people “Season’s Reading— Give the Gift of Reading” attending over the course decorated by the Munster of this very busy week. It Mints Girl Scouts was a glorious build-up to the holidays for all participants!

Three performances of the Symphony’s popular Holiday Pops Concert were presented at Living Hope Church.
