Celebrates Mass media Imagery in Everyday Life
South Shore Arts is pleased to present American Pop, a traveling exhibition from the University of Colorado Boulder Art Museum. The exhibition features more than 60 works from key figures in the Pop Art movement, including Andy Warhol, Robert Rauschenberg, Roy Lichtenstein, Red Grooms, James Rosenquist, Robert Indiana, Jim Dine, Ed Ruscha, Claes Oldenburg, Wayne Thiebaud, and H.C. Westermann. These artists, along with others, defined the Pop movement, becoming seminal in both the art world and beyond. American Pop will be displayed from November 15, 2011 through January 29, 2012. A VIP Reception will be held on Thursday, December 1, 2011, from 6-9pm. Pop Art was a visual art movement that emerged in the 1950s in Britain and the United States, but really took hold in the United States during the 1960s. Pop Art challenged artistic traditions while commenting on American consumer culture. The economic boom of post-World War II America lead to a society overwhelmed with material objects and advertisements, prompting a desire to consume incessantly. Furthermore, televisions in the American middle-class home defined the era by broadcasting not only shows and advertisements, but also images and footage of the Vietnam War, the Civil Rights Movement, and countercultural revolution. Pop artists drew on all aspects of the mass media, altering or appropriating images as a means of cultural critique. They looked at ordinary and mundane subject matter such as shop signs, road signs, comics and cartoons, packaging, and mass media imagery, with a sense of

irreverence and humor. They thus monumentalized the material details that mirror the dynamic of American life so well. In doing so, they reinvigorated the realm of “high art” by infusing it with the accessibility and irony of our social landscape. The University of Colorado Boulder Art Museum holds many of these works in its permanent collection thanks to the generosity of collectors and artists alike. Selections from the collections of Mr. and Mrs. Aron B. Katz and Polly and Mark Addison are featured in this exhibit. Gifts from the collection of artists, including Robert Rauschenberg, are also featured in the show. Artists Mike Bidlo, Ed Ruscha, and Luis Alfonso Jimenez along with notable contemporary American print publisher, Shark’s Inc., also donated works to the CU Art Museum. All of these gifts have added to the breadth and depth of the museum’s permanent collection, making this exhibition possible.

A Tradition that Gets Better with Age South Shore Arts is proud to present the 68th Annual Salon Show this fall at the Center for Visual and Performing Arts. Up to $10,000 in cash prizes will be awarded on Sunday, October 2nd, 2011, at a reception from 1-3pm. The awards presentation will begin promptly at 1:30pm. A tradition that has defined South Shore Arts since its inception in the late 1930s, the Salon Show has been presented in the Center’s 5,000 square foot gallery in Munster since fall of 1989. The first Helen V. Surovek Memorial Award was presented at the opening of the 46th Annual Salon Show in October of that year as the exhibit’s top prize. At $2,000, it has remained the Salon Show’s most generously funded award.
Bonnie Zimmer’s Natural Selection, a mixed fiber sculpture, received the Award of Distinction in the 67th Annual Salon Show.
Although the Salon Show was not juried until 1942––prizes were instead awarded by popular vote––jurying has been the accepted practice ever since. This year’s juror is David Klamen. Mr. Klamen is a contemporary painter who earned his Bachelor of Fine Arts at the University of Illinois, Champaign/ Urbana, in 1983 and his Master of Fine Arts in Painting at the School of the Art Institute in 1985. Mr. Klamen is currently a Professor of Fine Arts at Indiana University Northwest teaching Philosophy of Art and Art Theory in the Department of Philosophy, and various studio courses for the Fine Arts Department. David Klamen is represented by Richard Gray Gallery, Chicago and New York. His work can be found in the collections of the Art Institute of Chicago; the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York; Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles; the Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago; the Whitney Museum of American Art, New York; the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art; and the Elvehjem Museum of Art in Madison, Wisconsin.
The 68th Annual Salon Show will run September 25th through November 6th, 2011. The exhibit is FREE and open to the public.

Tri-County Junior/Senior High School Art Exhibition South Shore Arts celebrated the 37th anniversary of the Tri-County Junior/Senior High School Art Exhibition in May. The exhibit was open to all public, private and parochial schools in Lake, Porter and LaPorte counties in Indiana and south suburban Cook County in Illinois. New everykid Program Geared for Third Grade Classrooms The South Shore Arts Education Department continually looks for new ways to promote the arts and provide artistic opportunities to children. Michael Recycle is the third in a series of literacy-based art programs designed for elementary aged students. Beginning with The Polar Express for first-graders and continuing with The Skin You Live In for second-graders and now Michael Recycle for thirdgraders, South Shore Arts has designed sequential education programs that enhance learning while exercising creativity. Written by Ellie Bethel and illustrated by Alexandra Colombo, Michael Recycle Meets Litterbug Doug uses humor and verse to tell of the adventures of a young superhero whose power allows him to teach people about recycling. Students are encouraged to think in new ways both about art and trash. Teachers appreciate the cross-curricular programming that engages students, finding the experience beneficial not only artistically, but also for the Language Arts curriculum.
“Students showed great interest in creating their own projects. My class is usually very active and talkative, but they really listened and focused all their attention. We love the book, and I think the children enjoyed the creativity!”
The program was piloted this year in East Chicago with funding from the Foundations of East Chicago, as well as in four Hammond Schools with funding from Huhtamaki of Hammond, the world leader in producing environmentallyfriendly molded fiber and pulp products from recovered paper. In addition to financial underwriting, Huhtamaki also provided bowls, plates and cups that were used by the students to create their masterpieces. Students are also encouraged to bring in recycled paper material from home. Because the program is designed not only to expand literacy proficiencies but also to encourage children to care for the earth by recycling, teachers are able to incorporate the lesson into their third-grade curriculum.

A copy of the book is given to each classroom to be read prior to the art workshop. Teachers welcome the addition of a new book in their classroom and applaud the positive message of recycling emphasized in the book and through the art project. Children benefit from an art lesson that encourages individuality and guarantees success. Each student completes a unique artwork that reflects that child’s personal expression.

In recent years, art-based literacy programs developed by South Shore Arts have been well received by schools in Lake and Porter Counties, especially where fieldtrips are limited. Students reap the benefit of an art exposure without leaving their school, saving precious time and financial resources. In all of these in-school literacy programs, South Shore Arts visiting artists bring to each classroom the materials needed to create an art project based on a book with a valuable message.

South Shore Arts Relocates Crown Point Branch South Shore Arts will move its Crown Point, Indiana, branch location from the Old Bank at 138 S. Main Street in Crown Point, to new facilities at 123 N. Main Street beginning in the fall.
“While we’ve been operating in Crown Point since May 1998, many people continue to tell us that they don’t know
we’re there,” says John Cain, South Shore Arts executive director. “The Old Bank is a really beautiful building inside and out, and we took particular pride in renovating the space for our art classes, exhibits and community arts activities 13 years ago. However, we have been craving greater visibility to passersby on the street for some time.” To that end, the South Shore Arts board of directors recently voted to relocate to a new space at 123 N. Main Street, where floor-to-ceiling windows facing onto the street will provide pedestrian-level exposure. “In the new location, we will be right across the street from the new Crown Point Public Library and immediately south of McDonald’s,” John says. “We believe that the new space will provide us with lots of energy, activity and increased usage of our facilities.” South Shore Arts will continue to run its summer class session at 138 S. Main Street through the end of August and will reopen in the new space on north Main Street in time for fall classes at the beginning of October. Richard Oesterle, owner of The Old Bank property, whose family has long been associated with South Shore Arts, stated that he has been pleased to have the nonprofit arts organization and its many student artists in his building and wishes South Shore Arts well in its new location.

18th Annual Beaux Arts Ball Breaks ALL Records! South Shore Arts’ 18th Annual Beaux Arts Ball broke an attendance record and most importantly netted $173,000— $10,000 over last year and the highest net income ever! Beaux Arts Ball Co-chairs, Pat Colander, Nancy Trimboli, D.C. and Seda Turan-Yahne, along with a dynamic committee, board and staff are to be recognized and congratulated for a job well done. Special thanks also go to all of the community donors who supported the silent and live auctions this year. Celebrating South Shore Arts’ 75th year in the community with the theme “75 & Stayin’ Alive!,” the 18th Annual Beaux Arts Ball was held on Friday, June 3, 2011, at The Center for Visual and Performing Arts in Munster. The ball is held every year on the first Friday in June and is South Shore Arts’ primary fundraising event with proceeds benefitting the everykid education programs, which last year served over 20,000 children, youth and families in Northwest Indiana and south suburban Chicago. Over 430 attendees came out this year to support arts education for children, an essential component in developing critical thinking skills. The success of the ball continues to sustain and expand these educational programs that are so susceptible to drastic budget reductions locally and across the country. The decorations committee led by Jackie Wickland, made the most beautiful hand made origami flowers for each table that delighted all. The Gift Shop ladies helped too and just about 300 flowers in all were created. WOW! Seda Turan-Yahne and Design Studio 303 provided a splashy entrance with graphics from the ’70s. Everyone “hustled on in!”
Dancers from Gotta Dance Studio in Schererville treated the guests during cocktail hour to some disco dancing, featuring Bee Gees favorites “Stayin’ Alive” and “Night Fever.” The evening ended at midnight with a full dance floor and everyone doin’ the “Hustle.” Major sponsors of the 18th Annual Beaux Arts Ball were Diamond Sponsors ArcelorMittal, BP, Geminus Prevention Services and NIPSCO, plus event sponsors Community Healthcare System, Harris, Lexus of Merrillville, Majestic Star Casinos & Hotel and the Chris & Dede Morrow Fund of the Legacy Foundation, Inc. This year, South Shore Arts’ Patron of the Year Award was presented to Sue Eleuterio and Tom Sourlis for their generous support in enabling us to pilot such innovative education programs as “Making Memories—A Family Enrichment Program” and “The Skin You Live In,” both arts-based literacy programs. For many years, Sue and Tom have demonstrated that they truly believe in arts education as an important part of a child’s development by providing matching contributions for the Annual Fund, which specifically supports the everykid program. Sue has had a varied and distinguished career in the arts, having conducted fieldwork research, archival documentation, exhibit development, and public and educational programs, including professional development for artists and teachers, in folk and traditional arts, arts education, oral history, and cultural history. She has been affiliated with many organizations, including the Illinois Arts Council, the Chicago Area Writing Project and Company of Folk. Sue’s current projects include researching traditional foodways for Traditional Arts Indiana, writing a book on cultural identity and researching material culture in the Irish and Mexican communities in the Chicago area. As president of Sourlis Masonry Restoration, Tom spent 25 years repairing buildings that had been damaged by trapped water in masonry walls. As a response to seeing the damage that water can do, he invented Mortar Net® and patented its unique dovetail shape. Tom has worked on such notable historic buildings as The Rookery, The John J. Glessner House, Holy Family Church and the Chicago Water Tower. He attended Illinois Institute of Technology for four years as an architecture student. Tom has also pursued a lifelong interest in the arts through weaving, painting and flat glasswork. In 1974, he began making stained glass windows and lampshades, beginning with the Tiffany style and moving into more contemporary, sculptural forms, all of his work driven by an enduring connection to nature. Tom has recently experimented with and created unique varieties of sheet glass, continuing his experimentation and visionary search to discover new ways to produce beautiful glass objects at Sourlis Glass Studio located in Highland.

South Shore Arts Announces 15th Year of Art in Focus Founded by Rita M. Ray Art in Focus, South Shore Arts’ free art appreciation program founded by Rita M. Ray in 1997, will celebrate its fifteenth consecutive year in Munster. This year’s Art in Focus Program will study Women in Art. For centuries the role of women in art was limited to muse, assistant or patron in the case of aristocracy. Women were ignored—or worse—objectified by their male counterparts. In History of Art, the standard text used in introductory college art history classes, 3,000 male and only 19 women are represented. This year, Art in Focus will look at the struggles and achievements of women artists from a variety of genres, including painting and sculpture, dance, literature and music. The series will provide insight into the lives of great women artists as well as thought-provoking speculation on the current status of women in the arts. Two historically relevant paintings that used the woman as subject will also be studied to reveal the back-story of these famous artworks and the men who created them.
In addition to high quality documentaries by leading authorities, an integral part of every session continues to be the time set aside for participants to express ideas and ask questions that broaden their views on art. The goal of Art in Focus parallels that of the U.S. Department of Education, “Learning Never Ends.” Programs are led by South Shore Arts Director of Education Linda Eyermann. Assisting Linda in the planning of the year program is Linda Dunn of the Munster Public Library. Art in Focus is presented twice monthly on the second and fourth Monday mornings at 10am at the Center for Visual and Performing Arts. There are no membership dues or program fees to participate. Adults of all ages who want to continue to increase their understanding and appreciation of art and its history are welcome.

Classes are available for ages 2 through adult. The gifted instructors at South Shore Arts are primarily working artists with degrees in their respective fields. In addition to the many classes offered at its headquarters in Munster’s Center for Visual and Performing Arts––including drawing, painting, pottery, mixed media, cartooning and photography––South Shore Arts maintains two branch locations. Substation No. 9 in downtown Hammond offers classes in drawing, airbrushing, painting, Photoshop, and a senior art workshop. South Shore Arts’ Crown Point location on the historic courthouse square offers pottery, exploring Japanese art, painting, drawing, and collage, among others.
