John is an unbelievable competitor who comes to andpractice works hard singleeveryday.”

touchdowns rushing yards
Hurricane sophomore John Oughton came to play on Oct. 3. The talented running back took little time showing the fruits of his hard work in the weight room and at practice, running for a touchdown on his first carry of the night. Oughton had two more TDs and rushed for 157 yards on eight carries. He also reeled in a pass and was unstoppable on offense in Coral Shores’ rivalry win over Marathon. Head coach Ed Holly called Oughton’s performance his best this season, and the hard-working sophomore likely has more games like last week’s in his bright future. For his undaunted work ethic and coming up big when it counted the most, John Oughton is the Keys Weekly Athlete of the Week.

Key West made their annual trip to Ocala’s Florida Aquatics Swimming and Training center on Oct. 3 and 4 for the 47th Florida Swimming Pool Association meet. More than 50 teams and 1,000 competitors descended upon Ocala for the event, at the same facility as this year’s state championships.

The two-day event included a developmental meet held Oct. 3, followed by an invitational the following day. In Friday’s competition, five Conchs placed in the top 20. Mary Searcy finished ninth in the 100 backstroke event and 16th in the 200 freestyle race. Andres Aguero finished 12th in both the 200 IM and 100 butterfly, while Johnny Picco was 19th in the 50 free race. Ashlynn Pico was 16th in the 100 backstroke event with teammate Charlotte Murray finishing 19th in the same event.
In Saturday’s invitational meet, Santiago Gonzalez was 14th in the 100 freestyle and 17th in the 200. Amelia Korzen placed 16th in the 100 breaststroke.
This week, Key West will have a shorter trip, heading to Founders Park for a competition with Coral Shores, Varela and Braddock on Oct. 9. Both Keys teams are facing the final stretch of their regular seasons, with districts slated for Oct. 22 and, with any luck, another trip to Ocala for states the first week of November.
On their very first offensive play in the 56th Battle of the Keys, the Coral Shores Hurricanes handed the ball to sophomore back John Oughton. In what became a preview of the rest of the game, Oughton broke free for a 49-yard touchdown, handing the ’Canes a lead they never relinquished.
Oughton was good for two more rushing TDs and David Beltran tacked on a 50-yard score of his own. Sterling Keefe connected with Kristers Vutnans for a 16-yard touchdown reception and William Judson tacked on four extra points to bring the Hurricanes’ tally to 34 points in the rivalry matchup.
Marathon had some bright spots, but early miscues stalled their offense.
“When you run the single wing, you can’t make mistakes, you can’t be offsides or hold. We worked for every inch and penalties killed us,” said Fins coach Sean McDonald. The Dolphins did manage a late-game touchdown on a drive that approached the goal line, then receded multiple times before Jesus Gonzalez willed the ball into the end zone. Gonzalez did the same the following play on a successful two-point conversion to make the final score 34-8.
“It was another opportunity for two great teams and communities to have an exciting competition and great spirit,” said ’Canes coach Ed Holly. “I don’t think the score was indicative of how hard-fought this contest was.”

Key West had a bye last week, and it could not have come at a better time. The Conchs face a formidable Miami Northwestern on Oct. 11 on the mainland. The Bulls lead FHSAA’s 3A District 16 with a 5-1 record. Northwestern’s only loss came in August to California’s Orange Lutheran, a team consistently ranked in the top 100 in the nation.
Since week one, the Bulls have been on a rampage, outscoring opponents 157-54, with fellow district team Miami Jackson opting not to play them at all. Despite the imposing force Miami Northwestern represents, the Bulls have not faced a hard-hitting, run-heavy offense like Key West’s, and if the Conchs can lock down the Bulls on defense, their strength in the backfield may just shock the division leaders.
The Conchs are not the only team facing formidable opponents. Coral Shores faces a 4-1 Archbishop Carroll, a team whose only blemish came on Aug. 22 when they tied Florida Christian. The Fins face a 7-0 Mount Dora Christian Academy, whose punishing single wing offense has outscored opponents by a ridiculous 339-64 margin. In Marathon’s favor is their understanding of the Mount Dora offense, as it mirrors their own.

Keys golfers were unable to play one of two scheduled matches last week after the Florida Keys Country Club in Marathon was flooded with a deluge of rain. By the time match number two was set to begin on Oct. 1 in Key West, conditions were far more favorable. Marathon’s boys team won with an overall 175 strokes to Key West’s 203 and Coral Shores’ 226.
Marathon’s Roco Piscetello turned in the lowest scorecard. Piscetello birdied on hole five
and finished at five over par with 40. Key West’s Geo Twyman was two strokes behind in second, followed by four Fins. Emmett Merryman, Cullen Coleman-Sayer, Max Childress and Luca Picariello finished third through sixth. In a tie for seventh were Ryder Almeda of Key West and Dylan Lindmar of Coral Shores. Key West’s Brody Catena was ninth and Scout Oliver of Coral Shores rounded out the top 10.
The Lady Conchs’ Lexi Finigan finished first in the girls competition. Finigan carded a 43 for the
win. Teammates Claudia Steling and Mary Alice Davila finished second and third, with the Dolphins’ duo of Justice Lee and Makenna Haines in fourth and fifth. Melanie Estevez was the lone representative of Coral Shores, finishing sixth overall.
Golfers are working on their physical and mental games as districts loom at the end of the month. Teams have several local matches to help them prepare for the challenges that await in the postseason.
"The LaPradd family is three generations with Regan Roth Insurance. Our parents had Regan Roth as their insurance agent for years. They were incredibly happy with the coverage and assistance they received with their policies. Once we moved to the Keys, we wanted the same wonderful service, so we insured our properties with Regan Roth as well. Our children are also insured with Regan Roth as they know the importance of insurance coverage and they wanted the same valuable service our entire family has received over the years. We feel extremely comfortable knowing Holly Redding and the staff are there to help us with our insurance with coverage suggestions and recommendations to have the best protection we can. Holly always treats you like family and we could not imagine being with any other insurance agency. Thank you, Regan Roth, for being the best!”

Wheatley gallops away with gold at Race of the Thoroughbreds; Monroe County squads lace up in Key West
Coral Shores made the quick trip to Larry and Penny Thompson Park for the annual Race of the Thoroughbreds on Oct. 3. Sophomore Ali Wheatley outpaced a field of over 100 racers to finish in first place, crossing the finish line in 20:51. Wheatley was well ahead of the rest of the pack, completing the 5K course more than 30 seconds faster than the second-place finisher. Kate King was next for the Hurricanes, finishing in 24:22. Aria Boonton (25:58), Tess Hill (26:39) and Eleanor Perchalski (27:30) rounded out the top five for Coral Shores. The team placed fourth overall and are picking up speed as they race toward the postseason.
The boys came in fifth, led by Jamie Cary, whose 19:44 captured 15th place. Alaric Rodriguez was 19th, running the five kilometers in 20:12. Nathaniel Shugarman (21:03), Tristan Rios (21:25) and Tristan Sanchez (21:27) were third through fifth for the team. Both teams were well-represented with much larger rosters than in recent years, and the growing teams boast faster times as well.
The following day, runners from Key West, Marathon and Basilica School met at the Key West Country Club for an early morning race. Marathon’s Molly Joly won the girls race in 24:39 with Key West’s Emma Bradshaw in second with a time of 26:10. Marathon’s Mylana Loza (26:27) and Sofia Konyk (28:05) were next, with Ryah Bushey of Key West in fifth, crossing the line in 26:36. Ariella Dworniczak of Marathon, Sofia Zeledon of Basilica School and Danaica Bessy, Stephanie Rodriguez and Kayla Skaarup, all from Marathon, rounded out the top 10 in the girls race.
Lucian Burns finished first in the boys competition. Burns outpaced teammate Antonin Bursa for the top spot, breaking the ribbon in 18:08, with Bursa crossing in 18:47. Key West’s Prometheus Delacerda (19:42) was third, followed by Marathon’s Caleb Shelar (19:58) and Anthony Vargas (20:01). Sawyer Hill and Alejandro Caridad, both of Key West, finished sixth and seventh, and Liam Neary of Basilica School finished eighth. Key West’s Colin Palomino and Basilica’s Owen Wright took ninth and 10th in the varsity boys race.
In the 3K race, Basilica’s Jordan Thomas and Wyatt Guidry were first and second with Sugarloaf’s Sawyer Lyons in third. In the girls 3K competition, Cadence Allen and Emily Moore of Sugarloaf were first and second with Basilica’s Olivia Blass finishing third.
The Coral Shores Lady ’Canes improved to 11-6 on the volleyball court this season after a pair of wins last week. On Sept. 29, they took Somerset Silver Palms to a tie-breaker fifth set but ultimately lost the match 3-2. Two nights later, Silver Palms forfeited their match against Coral Shores, giving the ’Canes a quick win. Between the Silver Palms matches, the Hurricanes hosted Westwood Christian for a resounding 3-0 win after losing to the Warriors in Miami on Sept. 11.
“The girls were locked in and wanting to beat them in our gym,” said head coach Sam Ovalle.
Celene Walker had an ace, 14 kills, two assists and 14 digs in the win. Ivy Tiedemann had 16 digs and an ace. Tiedemann’s ace was part of a 100% serve percentage streak that sparked the Hurricane offense. Coralyn Frimpter had nine kills and 10 digs and Niveah Howard added six kills and a dig to her stats.
The team’s reinvigorated play comes right on time – they close out their schedule Thursday, Oct. 9 in Marathon, then move on to the FHSAA 3A District 16 brackets.
Competing in the 4A division, Key West stands at 13-10 after a pair of tournament matches last week. The Lady Conchs split their games, losing 2-1
against LaSalle, then defeating Reagan High 2-0.
Gabby Garcia had eight kills against LaSalle, while Adriana Heinrichs added five. Tess Wright picked up four blocks and four kills and Molly McKnight assisted 19 times. Against Reagan, Heinrichs’ nine kills, 11 digs and a pair of aces helped boost the Conchs past the Royal Lions. Smith and Garcia added seven kills each and Smith claimed three blocks at the net. McKnight was credited with 25 assists and Journey Lamb scrambled for 10 digs in the win.
Basilica school played one match last week, a 3-0 loss to larger Cardinal Gibbons. The Mariners, now 8-12, hosted Key West Oct. 8 for their final game of the season (results not available at press time). The team is not yet eligible for district matches. However, Basilica plans to enter the FHSAA next school year, which will enable them to continue their season into playoffs in future seasons.
against Coral Shores. The Dolphins earned the No.
Marathon had the week off from competition and will close out their regular season Oct. 9 against Coral Shores. The Dolphins earned the No. 4 seed in their 1A Rural District 8 pool. The Fins will host Glades Day, seeded fifth, on Tuesday, Oct. 14 in the quarterfinals. The remaining brackets associated with Keys teams are yet to be determined.
