‘Stop drivers speeding before someone is hurt’ PEOPLE living on Wellsway in Keynsham have renewed their calls for action to curb speeding drivers before someone is injured. Properties at the start of Wellsway, where it meets Bath Road, have been damaged in the past few years by crashing vehicles. In October, a driver came through the roundabout from Bath Road and struck a vehicle coming the other way. The first car hit ploughed into the wall between Gemma and Chris Mitchell’s home and their neighbour’s, while the other hit a wall on the other side of the road. In a previous incident, a car knocked over a telegraph pole, bringing the wires down across the road. Gemma, who says it’s a miracle nobody has been hurt, is among residents who have repeated their calls for something to be done. Suggestions include a large 20mph sign at the start of Wellsway, speed bumps, and higher kerbs to stop vehicles mounting the pavement. n Turn to Page 3

Complaints Despite our best efforts, we sometimes get things wrong. We always try to resolve issues informally at first but we also have a formal complaints procedure. We aspire to follow the Code of Conduct of the NUJ (National Union of Journalists), which holds journalists to a high standard of behaviour.

The recent accident at the northern tip of the Wellsway reminds us all how dangerous it can be just walking along a pavement. Local residents and ward councillors have been discussing what to do since 2019. Starting at the northern end where it intersects with Bath Road, residents have opted for a mobile Vehicle Activated Speed Sign (VAS), and Keynsham Town Council are working to get a grant from the police commissioner to buy two of them (the other one is for Charlton Road). They cost £5,000 each. The narrow section outside houses 10 to 14 would be well served by a chicane, but residents and BANES traffic officers are wary of this measure as it will cause a great deal of queueing in rush hour. Further down by the Limekiln junction, we have permission for a community speed watch and need a couple more volunteers to get it going on a regular schedule. The next danger area is the

Rock Hill Estate, where residents have no pavement at the exit on to the Wellsway, and residents in cars have to exit on to a blind bend. Some residents have proposed a speed table at the exit, and we are going to enquire of highways to see if it is feasible before we consult the other residents. The junction with Chewton Road is now in a 20mph zone and is much safer for cyclists with a turn-right lane. The newly reduced speed 30mph section from 131 up to 200 has been warmly welcomed by residents and we are recruiting volunteers for a Community Speedwatch at the Courtenay Road junction. We recognise the danger that the 40mph speed limit causes at Uplands and will continue to campaign to get the section of Wellsway up to the Keynsham sign reduced from 40mph to 30mph. B&NES ward councillors Hal MacFie and Andy Wait

n From Page 1 But Gemma said: “We’d welcome anything just to stop the speeding. “The problem is people not sticking to the 20 limit. They come off the roundabout, round the bend, put their foot down and lose control. Gemma says that although there is room for two cars to pass each other, larger vehicles sometimes mount the pavement. This has resulted in nearmisses for pedestrians, such as the time a lorry almost hit Gemma when she was wheeling one of her children in a pushchair. The mum-of-three said: “Quite a few kids walk to school along here. We’ve been so lucky that nobody has been hurt. But someone will get hurt sooner or later.” She would like to see higher kerbs to deter vehicles from mounting the pavement, as well as a big 20mph sign at the start of the Wellsway. “Because it’s a main road, people think it’s more than 20. The first sign is quite a way up the road, and it’s tiny and covered by a bush.” Gemma’s husband Chris said another way to cut traffic speed off the Bath Road roundabout into Wellsway would be to square off the current sweeping bend. This would make drivers slow down or stop at the roundabout rather than allowing the “catapult effect” into Wellsway. A visible ‘gateway’ at the start of Wellsway, to highlight that it is a low-speed area, is another of Chris’s recommendations. He added: “More measures

It would have been nice if they spoke to some of the residents to find out what we deal with day to day.” She also felt Cllrs MacFie and Wait were more concerned about the safety issues further up the Wellway than where she lives. “The speed watch programme was abandoned two years ago and we’ve heard nothing since.”

Plan for apartments at old fire station

PROPOSALS have been unveiled for apartments on the site of the old fire station in Keynsham. The development for the over-55s would comprise 21 one-bed and two-bed apartments, with commercial space on the ground floor facing Temple Street. A new pedestrian walkway through the site would link Market Walk to the leisure centre and Riverside apartments. The concept includes parking for cycles and two cars. A planning application for the scheme, on behalf of Chewton Place Developments, is likely to be submitted to Bath & North East

Somerset Council in mid-January. A drop-in session to allow the public to see the plans, ask questions and give their views of the scheme was held at Keynsham Library on November 23. The developers said designs were at an early stage and that the drop-in event would provide valuable public feedback on the initial proposals. More information on the plans can be found on the Nash Partnership website at nashpartnership.com (click ‘News and Views’). There is also a link to a comment form. Comments can also be sent by email to

KeynshamFS@nashpartnership.com or by post to Nash Partnership, 23a Sydney Buildings, Bath, BA2 6BZ. The deadline for comments is December 8. Chewton Place Developments bought the former fire station in 2017 for £750,000. Since then, attempts to redevelop the site have stalled. Plans to build a boutique hotel, with flats, shops and restaurant, on the site were submitted to Bath and North East Somerset Council in October 2019, but the application was withdrawn in January 2020. l Council flats plan in town centre: Page 9

High Street could be pedestrianised KEYNSHAM High Street — where an “optical illusion” cycle lane has been blamed for scores of injuries since it was installed last year — could be pedestrianised, with bikes banned from the street. The High Street has been dubbed “the most dangerous street in the UK” by local councillors, but not because of the cars. Instead, it is the hidden changes in the kerb heights around the street’s cycle lane which, as of August, have led to at least 76 injuries on the street since it was installed by Bath and North East Somerset Council in March 2022. After a call for action from local councillors in the town, the council has agreed to paint more markings to warn people of the confusing kerbs, with the work expected to happen in January. Pedestrianising the stretch of road is also being considered, but this would first go through a public consultation. In a statement delivered to a council cabinet meeting on November 9, Keynsham East Councillor Hal McFie said: “Keynsham ward councillors met with the leader and some cabinet members last week. It was agreed to apply more visual cues that would warn residents of an impending change in ground level.” He added: “It was also agreed that the best way out of the current impasse was to pedestrianise the High Street, with the ward councillors pushing to make it a cycle-free area. This could only happen if there was

members of the council executive. Conservative councillor for Keynsham South, Alan Hale, said: “The administration listened to what we had to say at a meeting and they are going to be doing some work on the High Street, mainly with coloured lining. If it helps, well, it’ll be good. If it doesn’t, then clearly I would want to see some physical measures taken.” If the High Street is pedestrianised, the councillors are hoping to see the traffic ban extend to bikes too, which they say could use Aston Way instead. Keynsham North councillor Alex Beaumont said: “I’m all in favour of pedestrianising the High Street.” He said he had been calling for it for years, but that they needed to look at how the move could accommodate disabled people who usually rely on vehicles to access shops on the street. He added that the street could reopen to traffic after 5pm. Council cabinet member for transport, Manda Rigby, said: “We are taking shortterm measures via putting more painted lines to further mitigate any incorrect perception of pavement/bike lane/roadway levels. “Longer term, there will be consultations around what any potential pedestrianisation of the High Street could look like, as there has already been a desire for this expressed by ward councillors talking with the local community.” John Wimperis, Local Democracy Reporting Service

a positive attitude by shopkeepers and residents, so the first step was to draw up an outline plan and present it to the Keynsham population in the 2024-25 financial year.” Mr McFie, a Liberal Democrat, and Keynsham’s other five B&NES councillors, have formed a cross-party alliance over the issue of the cycle lane. The group had planned to bring a motion before a full meeting of the council in September to force a vote on fixing the pavement levels, but the motion was pulled before the meeting amid fears it would be “torpedoed” by the Liberal Democrat administration. Now the group have held a meeting with

Simon memorial bench appeal hits target AN APPEAL to raise money for a bench in memory of Keynsham pub landlord Simon Sherwell has passed its £2,000 target. Simon, who ran the Old Bank in High Street, died in February, aged 41. The GoFundMe appeal page states: “After the tragic passing of Simon earlier this year, some of his family and friends have decided it would be fitting to commission a memorial bench in Keynsham park. “Simon was loved by so many, and we didn’t feel it

right to go ahead and start the process without giving people the opportunity to contribute.” And an update on the page says: “We’ve actually (just) gone over our target total, which is great news.” The £2,000 raised will pay for the bench with a plaque, its installation, and council maintenance for 10 years. People are still being encouraged to donate, as any surplus will go to charity. Flats planned opposite Tesco car park

How the new flats in Danes Lane would look. Right, the site opposite Tesco’s car park, and the view behind the fencing, with the Old Bank pub (blue building) in the High Street in the background TWO blocks of flats could be built opposite the Tesco car park in the centre of Keynsham. A total of ten flats for general needs social housing are planned in Danes Lane, on a site behind the High Street. Bath and North East Somerset Council has submitted a planning application to itself to build on council-owned land used as spare parking next to the Old Dairy apartments. Block one would have six one-bed flats while block two will have four two-bed properties. Each block would be three storeys

with pitched roofs and brick walls around the ground-floor exterior. Parking would be located in an undercroft beneath block two, which would be set back from the road to avoid interfering with the public footpath leading to the High Street. A statement submitted with the application said: “The proposed homes will be secured for social rent in perpetuity and will be available for local households in housing need.” It added that there are more than 700

applicants on Homesearch for homes in Keynsham, about 550 of whom are in need of one and two-bedroom properties. The council’s Liberal Democrat administration has named building more council houses as a priority for their administration. The deadline for comments on the plans is December 21. ON THE BEAT

Burglaries rise as darkness falls AS the evenings draw in, we are seeing more acquisitive crime across our force area, where thefts and burglaries are being reported. The darker nights lend themselves to these sorts of crime, so I advise you to be extra vigilant at this time of year. If something doesn’t look right, please report it to us. There has been an increase in thefts of deliveries, where packages are stolen from the doorsteps of the intended recipient. If you order items and are likely not to be in - bearing in mind that packages at this time of year are likely to be delayed - please offer a second option - whether this is to leave the item at a pre-arranged drop-off point, or with a neighbour. n We have received complaints of dog fouling in Keynsham, and the highlighted areas included Cranmore Avenue and the footpath that leads to the Tesco store. To combat this, I have reported this matter to the council – which has the power to issue on-thespot fines – and also to the dog warden, so they can get involved in

with PC James Evans educating the owners. It is a really simple fix for the owners to take responsibility for their pets and their behaviour, and deal with it accordingly. There are ample bins around in which to discard the waste. n This Christmas, the police service are looking to offer advice about giving electric scooters as presents, with the expectation that they will be used in the public areas such as parks, pathways and roads. These items can only be legally used on private land. So if you are found using them elsewhere, we are empowered to remove the scooter and prosecute the rider

for the road traffic offences they commit, no matter what their age. n The festive period also sees a great increase in social gatherings, from Christmas parties to family get-togethers. During this time, we also see a dramatic rise in the number of calls to the emergency services. We hope you can all have a great time, but please be careful. Make sure you have a plan for not only how you get out but how you get home. Keep an eye on your drinks and valuables, and do not leave them unattended. Tell friends and family where you are going and your expected time of return. If suitable, put some tracking software on your mobile phone and tell a trusted friend or family member how to access it, just in case someone reports you missing. We want everyone to have a great time while staying safe and keeping an eye on each other. From all the Neighbourhood Policing Team, we wish you a fantastic festive period.

Winter water health check Don’t get caught out by the cold this winter – follow our top tips to stay warm and leak free. 1. Protect exposed pipes Wrap them up with lagging. If they freeze they could burst and leak. 2. Check your outdoor taps Look for drips (these can cause frozen pipes). Wrap them up too. 3. Find your stop tap You’ll be able to turn the water off quicker in an emergency.

4. Look after your boiler Check your boiler is serviced so it’s fighting fit to keep you warm all winter. 5. Going away? Don’t forget to keep your heating on low (min 14ºC), to help stop your pipes from freezing while you’re away.

n NEWS FROM THE METRO MAYOR

Support our independent shops this Christmas CHRISTMAS thoughts are undoubtedly turning to shopping: please buy local and support our fantastic independent shops this winter. We have a huge bounty of small, independent shops, selling everything from toys to plants and records to hampers. They’re the beating heart of the West’s communities, doing much to enrich our lives. But they’ve faced huge challenges - soaring energy bills, record inflation, and the cost-ofliving crisis. That’s created a perfect storm for many stores. It’s why I’ve been offering £15,000 green grants for pubs, cafes and others, so they can install more energy efficient equipment. I’m proud of this. Companies are cutting their bills and CO2 emissions by seven tonnes on average - great for their wallets and our precious planet. One group I met recently, who’ve started their Christmas shopping, are care leavers benefiting from a new West of England-wide free bus travel scheme I’ve just introduced. The youngsters joined me on board a WESTlink minibus and told me about how the scheme means they can better access work, get to appointments, enjoy more days out, and, yes,

grab bits and bobs for loved ones at the shops, too. I then went from a bright green WESTlink to a 41-tonne lorry! HGVs are crucial in the Christmas shopping story, ensuring festive goods in our stores. But we’ve all seen the impact of a regional and national shortage of drivers, in terms of empty supermarket shelves and prices being driven up, all adding to the ongoing cost-ofliving crisis. It’s why I created a scheme last year to recruit and train new HGV drivers. While it was not easy, I’m pleased to say we have recruited over 230 in 12 months. And, of course, Christmas is about spending time with loved ones, sometimes travelling across the West to do so. The good thing for those with December birthdays is they can do that by hopping on the buses – for FREE. So, if it’s your birthday coming up, please enjoy the festive season in style by getting your Birthday Bus pass - details at www.birthdaybus. co.uk. We’ve recently had a little taster of chilly weather, but I know for many, reports of ice and

snow don’t bring hope of snowman building! It’s why I’m once again running a ‘Keep Warm this Winter’ drive, as it is vital to stay above 17°C, especially if you’re ill, an older person, or have young children. Fuel costs are still frightening, so please check out the top tips at www.westofengland-ca.gov.uk/keepwarm. Finally, I know Christmas can also be a tough time for many people having to work over the holidays. Thank you to those who keep everything running while the rest of us relax and celebrate, for all that you do.

Caring Jayden raises £1,300 for hospice Jayden Wiles making up Halloween sweet bags for his fundraising disco. Right, his sisters helping him at a cake sale at The Old Crown, Twerton KIND-hearted teenager Jayden Wiles has raised more than £1,300 for a local hospice. The Wellsway School pupil held a cake sale, arranged a children’s Halloween disco and organised an adults’ darts tournament. His proud mum Hayley said: “He made all the cakes himself and organised and made Halloween sweet bags, and bought decorations out of his own money for everything. “The total amount he raised was £1,341 for the hospice, which is

amazing for a lad his age. Especially with a lot of negatives around teenagers at the moment, it’s nice to hear of some positives.” Jayden raised the money for Weston Hospicecare, where his nan is an IPU (integrated procedures unit) nurse. The hospice at Weston-super-Mare provides palliative care to people with life-limiting illnesses. Just 20% of its funding comes from the NHS, so it relies on supporters like Jayden to enable its services.

n KEYNSHAM WALKERS ARE WELCOME

Tunnel trek into the past

w for Get ith C R a hri ea ne st dy w ma co s lo ur

IN October, we decided to try a new walk, this time around the countryside starting at Limpley Stoke. It was obviously a good choice as it was oversubscribed. The Keynsham Dial a Ride minibus was full, so two of our members gave fellow walkers a lift. And we met up with other walkers who had made their own way. After a bit of confusion and a delayed start, because of limited parking, 30 of us walked along the Kennet & Avon Canal in glorious sunshine, heading towards Bradford on Avon. After about a mile, we headed up the long slow climb to Winsley, where we stopped for refreshments in the garden of the Seven Stars Inn. Then we headed down across the common to Murhill, pausing en-route to take in superb views over the Wiltshire countryside.

Crossing Winsley Hill, we walked down the footpath to the start point, where the minibus was waiting to take us back. Many thanks to Pam for giving up her Sunday lunchtime to ferry a happy bunch of walkers back and forth. Because of the success of the Limpley Stoke walk, we ordered two Keynsham Dial a Ride minibuses for the November walk. This was slightly different, as the start and finish points were some four miles apart. Meeting at the Fox & Hounds car park, we set off for Greenway in Bath, where the Bath Two Tunnels walk begins. Before the start, the walk leader, Dave Johnson, gave a brief history of the walk, and the Somerset and Dorset railway Line, of which this was part. On hand were Bill Payter and John Wright, ex-railway employees

and steam train enthusiasts, to answer questions. Although it was overcast, with the forecast of rain, this did not materialise. Thirty walkers set off up the long slow incline before entering the first of the two tunnels - the shorter 400m Devonshire tunnel. Next up was the longer 1,600m Combe Down Tunnel. We had left the suburbs of Bath behind and emerged into the picturesque Lyncombe Vale. This was the high point of the walk, and it was all downhill from here. Stopping to look at the Tucking Mill Reservoir and viaduct, we pressed on, passing a superb view of Midford Castle on our right. The walk came to an end at Midford Halt station platform; this is the only evidence we could see of the existence of a railway line. We then made our way down

the steps to the Hope & Anchor pub for refreshment. Then the Dial a Ride minibuses took us back to Keynsham, everyone commenting on what a superb walk it had been. Thanks go to Dave Vince, who was marker for the walk, and members of the organising group who acted as stewards along the route, specially traversing the tunnels. Our next outing is on Sunday December 10, which is our annual wreath-making walk. Led by Dawn Drury, we shall meet at the Memorial Park gates and go for a short wander collecting flora, then back to the Fear Hall, where a demonstration on wreath-making will take place. Mulled wine and mince pies will be on hand. A donation of £5 towards to cost of the materials and room hire would be appreciated.

Hop aboard from train to your home COMMUTERS who use Keynsham railway station are being encouraged to try the WESTlink minibus service to make the final leg of their journey home. WESTlink is the West of England’s shared bookable minibus service. A new dedicated space will allow a WESTlink minibus to wait in the Keynsham station car park, responding to public feedback. It will leave the car park each weekday evening at 5.45pm. It is designed to meet passengers arriving at 5.35pm (from Bristol Temple Meads) and at 5.38pm (from Bath). The 12-seater minibus will then drop off passengers at the nearest bus stop to their home in the Keynsham and Saltford

areas. To book, passengers should download the WESTlink app from the App Store or GooglePlay, register and enter the pick-up point of Keynsham station and their desired drop-off point. A single adult journey

costs £2. Journeys can be booked up to 24 hours in advance. An estimated 75 people arrive daily at Keynsham station between 5.35pm and 5.38pm. Organisers say that if passengers opt to take the WESTlink home,

this would significantly help cut congestion and pollution. The trial, which started on Monday November 27, will take place for a month. If successful, it is hoped to introduce more waiting WESTlink minibuses to meet other busy commuter trains, not just at Keynsham but at other stations. Passengers are still able to book WESTlink minibuses at other times and from other places as usual. Metro Mayor Dan Norris said: “We know there are times when lots of people get off the train together - so it makes good sense to try and link up people’s onward journeys home. This arrangement is convenient, helps the planet, and is great value.” l Railway ticket offices spared the axe: Page 27

Craft time for winter AN ENJOYABLE day was spent by those attending the first of the winter season craft workshops in Compton Dando. Harriette Dottridge, who runs the sessions, said the 18 people who came “enjoyed a lovely collaborative, calm day doing everything from knitting and crochet to glass mosaic, wood block printing, card making and making charming book journals. “Jenny supplied her delicious soup and Dawn kindly brought her chocolate cake to add to the other homemade foods. “Thanks must go to everyone who washed up after lunch, helped clear up later and who showed and shared their wonderful knowledge.” The event made £25 profit towards costs of the next two sessions, on Tuesday January 9 and Saturday February 3. The workshops run from 10am to 4pm in Compton Dando village hall. There is enough parking for the 20 or so people who usually come. For more information, email Harriette at hdottridge@ hotmail.com or ring her on 07791 832592.

New bid to use site of derelict garden centre A FRESH bid is being made to bring a disused garden centre on the outskirts of Keynsham back into use. A planning application has been submitted for class B8 use – for storage or distribution – at the former Whitegate Nurseries site at Stockwood Hill. An architect’s statement with the application made to Bath and North East Somerset Council says: “There clearly is a need to bring this site back into use as opposed to having it empty and derelict. “A solution is to use the site and the largest building for a B8 use which retains the existing building and does not alter the site in any way. “It is also proposed to overclad the roof and walls of the building. The proposal will have no greater impact on the green belt.” A planning application to turn sheds and greenhouses at the

site into housing was submitted in 2021. But it was rejected by B&NES Council, which was concerned that that the greenhouses might not be able to support the proposed double-glazing and new roofs. The conversion of the greenhouses would essentially require them to be rebuilt, the council argued, and would therefore constitute the building of new homes in a countryside area, contrary to council policies. The council was also concerned about the potential impact on biodiversity and trees, as well as access for pedestrians and cyclists. The developer appealed but a planning inspector upheld the council’s decision. The deadline on comments for the latest application, by Whitegate Bristol Ltd, is December 6. The planning reference is 23/04182/FUL.

n BACK TO NATURE

Season’s tweetings from delightful dozen

B

IRDS have, for centuries, fascinated mankind. Many composers have been inspired by birds and their songs - from musical giants like Beethoven, Delius, Sibelius, Vivaldi, and Vaughn Williams (with his wonderful Lark Ascending) onto more modern composers such as The Beatles and Elton John. Numerous people abandoned on a desert island in the BBC radio programme have taken a recording of birdsongs as one of their eight records. The songs of birds give many people so much pleasure. With most trees having shed their leaves and fewer birds around, the months of December and January are perfect times to start observing birds and learning their calls and songs. To view the birds singing makes it a much easier task at the start. As we head into spring, there is too much going on. Come April/May the bird numbers have increased, the leaves have returned and the birds will be singing to both gain territory and a mate. It simply becomes much harder. Nowadays there are lots of aids to help us. Decades ago we had to look outside or listen to vinyl records to learn birdsongs. We have since advanced through cassette tapes to CDs, and we can now use apps on our phones to identify birds and their songs. Also there are lots of wonderful videos available. I can thoroughly recommend British Songbirds - A Celebration of Bird Song by Maurice Baker, which is an hour long. The BBC presenter Lucy Lapwing also has excellent videos of around nine minutes online on various birds. Once you start listening, you

discover that the songs of different birds vary a great deal in how long the phrases are, as well as in pattern, pitch, rhythm, tone and volume. Some birds, like the cuckoo and chiffchaff, are very repetitive, singing phrases that sound very similar to their names. The dunnock, once known as the hedge sparrow, does not have a song that sets the world alight, but it is a very good one to learn. The phrases are long, as it seems to be singing “I’m a little Dunnock. Listen to me. Listen to me.” It is a bird you will see in your garden, parks and community

Our meeting on Friday December 8, called It’s Snow Time, features three short talks by members - Fox & Hounds Restoration Project (FAHLAG), The Azores, not just Whales, and Wild Flowers of the Western Cape. It takes place at Keynsham Baptist Church Hall, BS31 1DS, starting at 7.30pm. Entrance: Avon Wildlife Trust members £3.50, non-members £4.50, to include festive refreshments served at 7.15pm. All welcome, no booking required. For more details on our group, visit our website www.keynshamawt.org, email keynshamawt@gmail.com or phone Kathy on 07850 508702.

woods during December. We have put words to many bird songs. The collared dove sounds like it is singing “United” whilst the wood pigeon seems to be singing “Take two cows Taffy”. The robin, one of our favourite Christmas card images, is the background sound to many of our lives, singing through most of the year and at night too. There is a quivering quality to its singing. It is one of the few birds where the females also sing. I think they sing simply for pleasure. When it comes to people’s favourite songbird, the following three – the blackbird, blackcap and

song thrush - are often mentioned. I have a friend who considers the song thrush as the Mozart of the bird world. It is also a wonderful mimic, copying other birds and the sounds of modern appliances like the car alarm. The Christmas carol Twelve Days of Christmas includes many birds. But how many of my ‘Twelve Birds of Christmas’ can you see and hear this month? They are: robin, dunnock, blackbird, song thrush, great tit, blue tit, coal tit, long-tailed tit, wren, wood pigeon, collared dove and blackcap. Andrew Harrison

Consultation on nursing home’s future PEOPLE are being asked for their views on plans affecting the future of a nursing home in Keynsham. A consultation has been launched with residents, families, staff and the wider community on proposals for Charlton House and two other Community Resource Centres run by Bath & North East Somerset Council. Charlton House found itself in the spotlight after a Care Quality Commission inspection in October last year found the quality of care at the home was inadequate. A follow-up inspection in January found that progress had been made but the service still needed improvement. Charlton House currently has just 11 out of 30 beds occupied. Under the proposals, those 11 places could be moved to Cleeve Court in Bath, which could become a “centre of excellence” for dementia care. B&NES Council says Charlton House could then be retained “for other community provision to meet the current and future needs of residents”. The council says the premises remain suitable for community and care uses, and discussions are under way with partners on how the building could be used in the future. The third facility affected by the proposals is Combe Lea in Midsomer Norton, whose

services would be enhanced to enable younger people with complex needs to live closer to home. Those wishing to take part in the public consultation, which ends at 5pm on Monday December 18, should visit bathnes.gov.uk and search for ‘Consultation on plans for Community Resource Centres’ Charlton House was transferred to the council in 2020 after Sirona announced it was handing back the contract. The CQC report in October last year found that one resident was left sitting in urine overnight and that another had not eaten or drunk anything for two days. Following the report, 15 nursing care beds were temporarily withdrawn. The council says significant progress has been made since then.

Councillor Alison Born, cabinet member for adult services, said: “We have reviewed the three homes where we provide registered care for up to 105 people and we are now asking people for their comments on our proposals, which will bring about improvements to the care we provide but also changes for those who receive that care. “I am very aware that we are consulting on people’s homes, so residents, their families and staff must have their say on any plans we make. We must also bear in mind that providing care is very costly and like every council there are huge pressures on our budgets. The decisions we take will always be in the best interests of the people we care for now and into the future.” All three Community Resource Centres came back to the council three years ago. Charlton House is registered to provide 30 nursing care beds over two separate floors, Combe Lea has 30 registered care beds and Cleeve Court has 45. The council says all have been invested in significantly, including increased pay for staff, and training and equipment to support care. But rising costs, including agency cost pressures, could see the service face a potential £1 million overspend in the next financial year.

KEYNSHAM AND SALTFORD LOCAL HISTORY SOCIETY

How did Temple Street get its name? As it used to be - Temple Street looking north. Left, the north end of the street not long before demolition for redevelopment

N

EWCOMERS and visitors to Keynsham sometimes ask “Where was the temple?” when thinking about the name of the southern extension of the High Street. Disappointment follows when they learn that there has never been a temple nearby. So where does the name come from? The story is linked with Newton Park, today the home of Bath Spa University. This is best described as a minor stately home, with the main house built for Joseph Langton in the early 1760s. (He employed Lancelot ‘Capability’ Brown to landscape the surroundings, and the lakes are well worth a visit.) Through marriages, both wealth and the length of the family name increased, and in 1846 William Gore-Langton married Lady Anna, daughter of the second Duke of Buckingham and Chandos. This marriage brought the title Earl Temple of Stowe into the family, when their son, also William, inherited it in 1889, as the fourth earl. He also added Temple to the family name. William, fourth Earl, died in Egypt on 28 March 1902, aged 54. His body was brought back to England and he was buried at Newton St Loe. In a separate and earlier local connection, the second Duke, whose mother was Lady Anne Brydges, had squandered a vast inheritance and in 1841 had had to sell the properties in Keynsham that his ancestor, Sir Thomas Brydges, had bought from the abbey estate after the dissolution of the monasteries. Turning to the road itself, for hundreds of

years this had been the route to the south, and originally it would have been the road to Bath, crossing the Chew at Dapps Hill and before then at the ford a little further upstream. It was not named in 1841 but had become Temple Street by the time of the 1881 census. Precisely what event in the Gore-Langton family (if any) triggered the naming we have not discovered. A length of Temple Street, between Rock Road and Carpenter’s Lane, was renamed Victoria Street in 1897 to commemorate Queen Victoria’s Diamond Jubilee. For some reason, this did not last long and it reverted to Temple Street, quite possibly to mark the death of Earl Temple in 1902. At this time Temple Street had a loose stony surface which was watered daily; it was upgraded to a tarred surface, 14 feet wide, in 1912. Further improvements were made in 1924. Residents had complained, as the floors of cottages on one side of the street were below road level; presumably the road surface was lowered to rectify the situation. In the early years of the Second World War, Temple Street was one of various roads in the town to be provided with ‘blast walls’. These

were concrete walls, perhaps four feet high, built along the edge of the road/pavement. There is remarkably little information on these walls and why some roads were provided with them but not others. Somerset County Council was responsible for them, and removing the walls took much longer than building them. After many complaints by residents, and threats to involve the local MP, they were finally demolished in mid-1947. The next time the demolition crews arrived in Temple Street, they were to change it for ever. Before the late 1950s the street was an old thoroughfare lined with terraced cottages, a few shops and three public houses. Redevelopment was wholesale. On the east side, only The Ship survived, and that after a vigorous campaign to have it listed. Opposite, the northern length was kept and we can get an idea of the scale and form of the old buildings from the rank of shops between Laviano’s restaurant and Iceland, which have changed relatively little. For the rest of old Temple Street, we have just memories and pictures. (with research by S Tatford, B Vowles) Richard Dyson

n KEYNSHAM IN BLOOM

Getting ready to spring into life

T

HIS time of year represents for many of us a slowing-down in our gardens, allotments, balconies or whatever outside space we have. Isn’t it nice to stop and draw breath and watch our trees change colour before the leaves drop and coat the ground? Doesn’t it feel like autumn still rather than five weeks to Christmas? But l am not complaining, as this warmer weather will hopefully make winter shorter and our heating bills less. Work on our various projects is progressing. Daffodil bulbs have been planted in the High Street triangle flowerbed, and when we receive the extra compost from BANES, our hardy band of volunteers will be planting up donated plants

®

and spreading seeds to fill up the gaps. Our containers in the High Street have been planted with pansies, polyanthus, wall flowers and bulbs ready for a spring display, and l think the cascade container outside the Methodist Church will be a delight thanks to the Girls Brigade working so hard to look after it. The Pocket Park has now been planted with extra bulbs, and our last official 2023 visit was on Saturday November 18, to tidy up the flowerbed below the mural and cut back one or two herbaceous plants ready for their winter sleep. As usual, our railway station, under the leadership of Mary Maule, is looking lovely and such an entrance to our town. Thank you girls

and boys for your input to all our projects. It is very much appreciated. As you can imagine, we are always happy to welcome new volunteers, and if you can spare a little time please contact me at catherinemarywoodman@gmail.com or pop into the Keynsham Town Council offices in Temple Street and they will make sure you hear from me. Keynsham In Bloom had a stall at the Winter Festival on Friday November 24 – we’ll tell you how we did in the January edition of the Voice. In the meantime, please enjoy these photos of our spring and summer flowers. Mary Woodman

Top tips for a green Christmas Feel-good feasting with I CAN’T believe it’s December! I’ve been thinking about how to ‘do’ Christmas sustainably without being a Grinch. Here’s what my research has thrown up. Have a veggie Xmas dinner. If that’s a nut roast too far, choose turkey over red meat (free range or organic if possible). Reduce food waste by buying a crown or mini roast, and reduce energy by using the microwave to parboil potatoes and cook veg, and a slow cooker for the meat. Don’t buy disposable tat that’ll end up in landfill. Consider an Oxfam donation, a reusable coffee cup or something edible. For bigger presents, give the recipient the receipt so they can swap it. Think secondhand electronics. There’s a thriving market in reputably refurbed mobile phones and computers. It’s cheaper too! How best to wrap your sustainable pressies? Avoid non-recyclable foil wrap, remove tape and glittery plastic add-ons. Alternatives are newspaper (potato printing anyone?), recyclable brown gift wrap, parcel paper or fabric (which you can use again and again). Switch to LED outdoor lights, consider solar and always use a timer to slash energy use by up to 90%. Into Christmas jumpers? Reuse the same one every year.

If you really need a new one, donate your old one to a charity shop and buy from there too. Brits pull 154m Xmas crackers every year, but they’re throwaway culture writ large. How about buying crackers to fill yourself and reuse every year? Or make your own and fill them with jokes, homemade hats and choccies. A fake tree’s ok if you reuse it for at least 12 years. A living tree’s best. If you can’t resist a whopping great pine in your lounge, buy FSC certified and make sure to recycle it. Fake trees, foil garland, Santa hats and Christmas kitsch have a human cost too. They could be made using slave or child labour. When the party’s over, make a New Year’s resolution to carry on being green. Sustainability isn’t just for Christmas. Want to find out more? Visit the Greener Christmas pop-up at Keynsham MakeSpace (2 Riverside Square, behind Temple Street) on Saturday December 9 11am-3pm for free crafting, wreathmaking, and sharing ways to have a greener Christmas. Once again they’ll join forces with Caring in Bristol to feed people who are vulnerable throughout Christmas week. When you buy your food from them, you’ll be able to add gift vouchers that provide two meals for people who are homeless. Or you can buy a Christmas veg box with an added donation. They’ll also deliver boxes of organic produce, sourced from local farmers and producers, to about 200 families in need in Bristol, funded by the Holiday Activities and Food Programme, which is supported by the government’s Department for education. Revd John Hayes Minister at Keynsham Methodist Church

at the world through ‘ Looking angelic eyes enables us to see the potential buried within each person

T

he Angel Gabriel comes to Mary and says, “You may be a teenager in a village nobody has heard of, on the edge of the Roman Empire, but you are going to be at the very centre of things, where God breaks into the world. You are going to be ‘where God happens.’ (The Angel Gabriel is strong on imagination). As humans we can either see the world primarily in relation to ourselves or we can see the world through the eyes of an angel. The Angel Gabriel looks at the world and sees it pregnant with God. Looking at the world through angelic eyes enables us to see the potential buried within each person, because we can now see that person in their relationship with God. At Christmas time we meet a helpless, homeless baby lying in a manger. We somehow see God coming through the silence of the night in Bethlehem (and how we yearn for there to be peace in Bethlehem and the Middle East). Through this lens we gain the capacity to have an angelic way of seeing things. We can now see everything and everyone around us pregnant with God.

The coming of the baby Jesus, celebrated at Christmas, is deeply and rightly ingrained in our culture as a unique turning point, the start of a new era. It becomes a new way of seeing for us all. This is where our human seeing and knowing start to become that little bit more angelic. In the child’s outstretched arms is the invitation of Christmas: that God, in coming to us, wants above all to draw us into the very being of God. God loves us, each of us, in our hidden selves. Over the next few weeks our churches in Keynsham will be full of people singing carols, enjoying nativities, lighting Christingles, and advent candles. Perhaps this year you might be drawn to celebrate the birth of the Christ-child so that you too can see the world through angelic eyes. If you decide to come along I know you would be very welcome. However you decide to celebrate Christmas, may you sense and know the Peace of the Christ-child, now and always. Grace and Peace.

New block will be final piece of £60m scheme A GROUND-breaking ceremony has been held to mark the start of work on St Monica Trust’s latest development in Keynsham. The building of Block D will mark the completion of the charity’s £60 million redevelopment of the former Somerdale factory. Built on the vacant land opposite the Somerdale Pavilion, Block D will be a fivestorey building offering 44 independentliving apartments. They will be a mix of one and two-beds, with 18 apartments providing ‘affordable’ housing for residents nominated by Bath and North East Somerset Council.

The design includes off-street parking for cars and bikes, a new landscaped area for pedestrians between Block D and the Somerdale Pavilion, plus a new entrance to the Pavilion car park off Trajectus Way. The ground-breaking ceremony was attended by St Monica Trust’s chief executive, David Williams, and president of the board of trustees, Tim Ross, along with residents and staff from The Chocolate Quarter Retirement Village, which opened in 2018. David Williams said: “The building of Block D not only marks the completion of the trust’s redevelopment of the former

Somerdale Factory, but it also fulfils our original commitment to provide affordable housing for the local community.” Tim Ross said: “This exciting redevelopment of the former Somerdale factory and the additional investment in Keynsham reflects our commitment to build communities where older people can flourish, alongside our promise to provide affordable housing.” RED Construction Group’s South West division have been appointed as the trust’s preferred builders for the project, with completion expected in September 2025.

Relief as rail station ticket offices saved PLANS to shut railway ticket offices at Keynsham and throughout the country have been scrapped. The government said it had asked train operators to withdraw their proposals because they failed to meet “high passenger standards”. Labour Metro Mayor Dan Norris, a long-term opponent of the plans, said he was delighted and relieved at the news. He said: “This is a huge victory for West of England passengers, who delivered their message loud and clear that closing all our ticket offices is unacceptable.” Alongside Mr Norris’s submission to passenger body Transport Focus during a public consultation, it was revealed that another 2,245 formal objections were made by West of England residents. Mr Norris said: “Every proposal to modernise our railways needs passengers at its heart. We must do everything possible to encourage more people onto trains here in the West, and across the country. “Never again should ministers support a plan to put barriers in the way to make that job harder.” Under the proposals, the single staff member selling tickets at Keynsham on weekday mornings would have worked on both platforms instead – a move that Mr Norris had criticised as “particularly pointless” on the grounds that it would save no money, nor would it improve services for passengers. The U-turn on closures has also been welcomed by Keynsham and Saltford

Labour Party, whose members campaigned in the summer to encourage local people to respond to a public consultation about the proposals. Keynsham town councillor Martin Burton said: “There was overwhelming opposition to the proposal from the people we spoke to and a great deal of anger about the Government not caring about marginalised groups. “The station staff do such a valuable job in enabling people to buy tickets and advise them on the most cost-effective way to travel by train. “The proposals have caused a great deal of stress to both passengers and station staff who would have been worried about the implications of this proposal. “In September, Rishi Sunak said ‘the proposals were the right thing for the British public and British taxpayers.’ This once again shows the Government completely out of touch with public opinion and wasting money on a consultation that the rail industry and passengers knew wouldn’t work.” Other ticket offices spared the axe include Bristol Temple Meads, Bath Spa, Bristol Parkway, Filton Abbey Wood, Oldfield Park and Yate. Together with Keynsham, they sold 600,000 paper tickets last year. The closure plans sparked an outcry from political leaders, disability campaigners and passengers. But rail bosses said an increasing number of people were buying their tickets online and that closing the ticket offices would free up rail staff to help passengers with a wide range of issues.

Labour Party members who campaigned at Keynsham station say the closure proposals showed the Government was out of touch

POETRY CORNER Christmas Joy December’s a special month in the year When many a happy event will occur. The puddings and cakes for Christmas, all made, And dates for loved relatives all been laid. Decorations adorn each house, every shop, Comings and goings, all rush, it’s non stop! The excitement of children counting each day ‘Til jolly old Santa arrives on his sleigh. The tinsel and crackers, laughter and fun, Much singing of carols, shopping all done! Meeting up with good friends, the exchanging of gifts, The season of peace and for mending old rifts. But spare a few moments for those on their own, Many dreading the day when they’ll be all alone. We can show them some happiness, take time to share If only by visiting, show them we care. And remember we celebrate each Christmas Day Because in a manger our dear Saviour lay. Born in a stable that first Christmas morn. Our best gift of all, Jesus was born. Sylvia Kirby

Two more units set to be built at business centre The entrance to Pixash Business Centre, where two more units are set to be built PLANS for two more units at Pixash Business Centre in Keynsham have been approved despite objections. A decision was deferred by Bath & North East Somerset Council planning committee in September so members could visit the site and the applicant could provide more information. At the committee’s November meeting, planning officers said the application by Systopia Consulting Limited had attracted 25 objections. People were concerned about noise, highways safety and loss of privacy, as well as over-development of the site and the effect on existing businesses. Keynsham Town Council, which had originally raised no objection to the application, had also since decided to oppose the plans. But officer argued that the proposed units, next to Proximity House, were suitable for the site. They would be highquality, of a similar scale to existing ones, and would create jobs. Also, the applicant had agreed to remove the request for class B general industrial use from the proposals, meaning the units would be for light industrial, storage or warehousing. But Chris Beaver, representing the owner of the internal access road that connects the site to Pixash Lane, spoke out against the proposals. He said that existing occupants such as Bottle Company South Ltd, Bristol & Bath Car Services, RoughTrax and

Dataquest were united in their objection to the plans and believed the “inadequate” access arrangements posed a threat to the operation of their businesses. In a statement, Councillor Andy Wait said the proposal was for “one business too many” but that a suggested compromise of a single unit served by the existing turning head had been rejected by the applicant. He was also concerned about the prospect of more lorries using the nearby A4 Bath Road, where traffic had already been affected by the Hygge Park housing estate, the new recycling centre and the Meryton Place nursing home. “The last things local residents want is more HGVs,” he said. Councillor Wait also echoed Mr Beaver’s concerns about the effect of the proposals on a legal covenant governing right of way on the site. But planning officers said land rights were not relevant to decisions on planning applications. Highways officers had raised no objections to the proposals and HGV access was felt to be acceptable. Officers said that although the removal of class B use from the plans should allay noise concerns, the council could carry out a noise assessment in a few months’ time, with the possibility of enforcement if any issues were not rectified. The officers again recommended approval, and a majority of the committee this time voted in favour of granting planning permission.

More thrills ahead in 2024!

It’s been a busy and exciting year for Keynsham Scouts AS 2023 slips away, we look forward to 2024 and an exciting year for Keynsham Scouts. Thanks to the support of the community and our volunteers, we have achieved so much in 2023, including building a new challenge activity course at Chelwood camp site, taking Explorers on an International expedition (including white water rafting on a real river) and learning crossbow skills. We have also expanded our activity teams to

provide more opportunities in the future. Plans are already building for 2024. Our Scout section is preparing for an international camp in Norway, there is a week-long UK summer camp, and members will be able to attend a massive district jamboree weekend camp in June. Dates for 2024 that readers may like to note include the spring clay shoot on March 25 and 26, the KESU plant sale on May 14, and the

annual auction, book and toy sale on Saturday October 5. Thanks again to all our volunteers and supporters – and a special thank-you to Keynsham Voice, which gives Scouting the opportunity to share its activities and find volunteers to support the young people both in the Scout group and also waiting to join. If you fancy being an adult volunteer, contact scouts@1stkeynshamscouts.org.uk for a chat.

The summer school holidays saw a number of members head off to camp in North Devon, encompassing group paddleboarding, coasteering, walking on Exmoor, and coastal walks with stunning views. BOOKS OF THE MONTH

31

with Judith Thomas from Keynsham Library Adult Fiction

The Man Who Died Twice Richard Osman This is the second book in Richard Osman’s popular crime series. Again we meet exspook Elizabeth, Joyce, Ibrahim and Ron - four senior citizens with a passion for solving crime. Elizabeth has received a letter from an old colleague – he has made a mistake, stolen diamonds are involved; a nasty mobster and murder is never far away. Can the septuagenarians hunt out a ruthless murderer and even find some diamonds? With great characters, Richard Osman strikes gold yet again. The relationship between the group of friends is infectious, and tough issues are dealt with, like dementia and loneliness, with a lovely light touch. The plot is pacey – with the group getting themselves into some sticky situations with lots of humour. I can see why these books are so popular.

A Christmas Revelation Anne Perry A Christmas crime caper from the popular Anne Perry. In a story set in Dickensian London, we meet Worm returning home to Portpool Lane. He ducks and dives to survive and while he walks through the streets of London, the city is full of festive cheer. As he approaches home, he

spots the most beautiful woman he has ever seen, but she is being dragged away by two nasty men – what is the information that only Elouise can tell them? With the help of Squeaky Robinson, an accountant at the nearby hospital, Worm comes up with a plan to rescue Elouise, just in time for Christmas Day. A perfect whodunit with great characters.

Young Adult Fiction

Honey and Spice Bolu Babalola reviewed by Emilie Bioud, Keynsham Library Kikiola Banjo is studying at an English University, dreaming of winning a place at NYCU. She uses her free time to do a radio show called Brown Sugar, giving advice to her sisters on the campus against heartbreaker guys. Her last episode depicts a newly arrived student who has already caused a lot of trouble among the ladies; she nicknames him the Wasteman. She doesn’t know yet that she is going to have to work along this student if she wants to achieve her NYCU ambition. Can she resist his charm? Bolu Babalola writes modern romances that are honest about women’s feelings and desires. But if I must complain about something, it’s the fact that she writes more for American readers, meaning her version of England is heavily fictionalised; I couldn’t relate to any of the descriptions of it. It doesn’t impact too much on the story though, and you soon start to enjoy the different characters and wish they had their own stories told in another book. Get ready for some Soul and R’N’B music.

Children’s Fiction

Clarice Bean: Thinks like an Elf Lauren Child I love all the Clarice Bean books – they are a delightful read with great illustrations, and Clarice is a brilliant character. So, Christmas is fast approaching and at No.7 Navarino Street preparations are in full swing – or are they? Clarice hopes everyone on her street is full of Christmas spirit - but that pesky spirit can sometimes float away, and it important to keep an eye of it. There is the tree to choose, the turkey to get, a Christmas list to prepare and concerts to attend. But Clarice is determined that her whole street should enjoy Christmas with her and then, of course, it snows.

The Queen’s Present Steve Antony It is Christmas Eve and the Queen faces a dilemma - she still has not found the perfect present for the little princes and princess. Luckily she has great connections, and none other than Father Christmas is on hand to help her. Off they fly, all around the world in the search for the prefect gift! This book is beautifully illustrated as the pair tour the world and visit special place such as the Eiffel Tower in Paris, the

Statue of Liberty in New York, the Himeji Castle in Japan and even the North Pole. There is a delightful stop right at the end.

The parade heads down Keynsham High Street Photo: Andie Barlow

December, 2023

‘For your tomorrow we gave our today’ CROWDS lined the streets on a grey, drizzly Sunday to pay their respects at local Remembrance commemorations. In Keynsham, members of the armed forces, youth organisations and Royal British Legion assembled in Ashton Way for the parade before proceeding to St John’s Church for a service, whose attendees included local MP Sir Jacob Rees-Mogg. The parade then marched along the High Street and down Bath Hill to the Memorial Park gates for a service of Remembrance, led by Revd Anika Gardiner, the playing of Last Post and the laying of wreaths. A silence at 11am in memory of those who gave their lives was followed by the Kohima Epitaph: ‘When you go home, tell them of us and say, for your tomorrow, we gave our today.” In Saltford, high numbers of residents attended the village’s parade, church service, and short service by the war memorial (including Last Post). Saltford Parish Council thanks Saltford Scouts for organising the proceedings.

SOMEWHERE in the abbey ruins at the top of Memorial Park lies Jasper Tudor, a little-known footnote in the textbooks. He lived during the Wars of the Roses. When Richard of York came to blows with Henry VI, Henry’s Lancastrian forces killed Richard, but his son Edward afterwards killed Henry and assumed the throne as Edward IV. Upon his death, his children became the Princes in the Tower as his brother, Richard III, seized the throne, only to be in turn killed in battle by Henry Tudor – now Henry VII. Jasper Tudor was Henry VI’s half-brother and Henry VII’s uncle. He tried to ease tensions between the Houses of Lancaster and York, looked after bereaved relatives, remained loyal to both Lancastrian kings through apparently hopeless defeats and exiles, and generally reads like the perfect knight, the antithesis of the jealous halfbrother/scheming uncle, and possibly the only decent Tudor. If the price of A) a clear conscience, B) dying naturally, and C) dying peacefully, is of getting less of a mention in the textbooks, I don’t imagine Jasper would have minded, and I think of all the people we could have had, we’re lucky to have him buried here as our unknown warrior. Volunteers honoured FOUR volunteers from Keynsham Life Saving Club have been recognised at the Royal Life Saving Society’s national presentation of honours at Coombe Abbey in Coventry. Beth and Trevor both received a certificate of thanks in recognition of eight years’ service, while David collected his service cross marking 20 years of volunteering with the society and Summer received the young lifesaver of the year award. Summer, 16, has been a committed member of Keynsham Life Saving Club since 2014, working her way through the lifeguard awards. She rarely misses a training session and is an enthusiastic competitor, regularly captaining Keynsham LSC teams at university competitions against much older

and stronger competitors, and she sets a shining example to other club members. In its weekly training sessions, KLSC teaches a range of skills showing how to deal with water and land-based emergencies, including first-aid training and specialised water-rescue skills. The club offers a rolling programme of training so new members can join at any time without worrying about missing the start of a course. The club also enters life-saving competitions throughout the year, which is a great way to practise skills in simulated incidents. Members of KLSC can also work towards Royal Life Saving Society awards. For more information, visit www.klsc.co.uk

On the right is Jack Exon, who in later life became foreman at the Colour Mill in what is now the Memorial Park. KEYNSHAM TOWN FC

Jake Wilson has grown in stature after taking on the captaincy

Joe Davis, aged 17, is the club’s top scorer with 11 goals to date

Much-needed wins are a sign of hope THE current season is proving to be a difficult one for Keynsham Town’s young team as they find themselves embroiled in a relegation battle in the Toolstation Western League Division One. However, November saw what will hopefully be a turnaround in the team’s fortunes with two muchneeded wins in a week. A convincing second-half performance at home to Cheddar led them to a 4-0 victory, which was then followed by the weirdest five days I think anyone connected with football can remember! Firstly, the Ks hosted Shirehampton in the Les Phillips Cup on a cold Tuesday night and somehow contrived to turn a 3-0 lead after a scintillating first half into an embarrassing 9-4 defeat. But they bounced back with aplomb the following Saturday when they played Shire again in the league. Despite worried looks from the Ks faithful when Shire once again reduced the Ks’ lead to 4-3 early in the second half (Keynsham’s supporters must have thought “here we go again”), the Ks stepped up a gear to go on to record an impressive 7-3 win. Keynsham still have a couple of games in hand on clubs around them, and Ks secretary Jules French said: ”It is important that everyone, from our committee to our supporters, get behind Ash, Marv and the lads to help us get to where we want to be”. Off the field, the committee are delighted to announce that Martin

Ks midfielder Brad Selwood has also impressed this season

There’s plenty of football for both the men’s and ladies’ sections to look forward to at Crown Fields in December: Saturday December 2: Men’s first team v Middlezoy Rovers, 3pm Saturday December 9: Men’s reserves v Clutton, 3pm Saturday December 16: Men’s first team v Gillingham Town, 3pm Sunday December 17: Ladies’ first team v AFC Bournemouth, 2pm Boxing Day: Men’s first team v Brislington, 3pm Saturday December 30: Men’s reserves v Chard Town, 3pm Even if you can’t make it in person, you can keep up to date with the Ks’ fortunes in next month’s Keynsham Voice. Parfrey has stepped up as acting chairman. Martin has years of business and IT experience that are already proving to be a great asset to the club, with improvements

in our social media and match programme. Martin said: “At our last committee meeting, I was asked to stand in for our chairman Phil Gane, who is off to Australia for

three months to see his family. I was delighted and honoured to be asked to fill the role, and I look forward to continuing in helping Keynsham Town FC in the coming months. “May I also take the opportunity to wish Phil a safe journey and hope that he has a fabulous time with his family over the festive season, and we look forward to his safe return in 2024”. This year the club is once again entering a tree in the Christmas Tree Festival at St John’s Church, Keynsham, from December 8 to 10. This is a celebration of everything good about our town and the role the club plays in our community, with football teams from the juniors at age five to their walking football section for those aged 50 to 70 and over. Back on the field, the Ks reserves have shown real improvement after a difficult start to their Uhlsport Somerset County Premier Division campaign. With several players returning from lengthy injuries, the team now sit in a healthy upper midtable position. The Ks ladies are also showing an improving trend in the FA Women’s Division One South-West. They currently lie sixth in the table with four wins from eight games, and are also still in the Women’s FA Cup. Even if you can’t make it in person, don’t forget to keep up to date with the Ks’ fortunes in next month’s Keynsham Voice.

December, 2023

Trophies lined up - and in safe hands! ONE of the most enjoyable and eagerly anticipated events in the Keynsham Bowling Club calendar is the annual presentation lunch, when trophies are given to the winners of the in-house competitions that took place during the bowling season. This was held this year at Saltford Golf Club, when nearly 70 members gathered for a three-course lunch before the presentations were made. We welcomed two guests from Meryton Place Care Home, who this season became our shirt and principal sponsor. They were Natalie, the home’s manager, and Rosie, the regional community relations lead. Our pictures show the trophies on display before the presentations, as club president John Nix and vice president Margaret Church discuss the running order with secretary David Hockney. We then see the trophies in the safe hands of the winners, who will be their custodians for the next 12 months. They can also choose to receive a small commemorative trophy to keep. Mike Barrow

Keepers kitted out for success TWO students at Wellsway School in Keynsham got the chance to try out some new kit when they were given a masterclass in hockey goalkeeping. Fin and Kaci managed to make remarkable progress in the hourlong session, during which Ollie, Keynsham Hockey Club’s second-team goalkeeper, gave them some top tips. The new kit they wore is very lightweight but still offers the protection needed when facing powerful shots. And the kits will be in action in Wellsway’s competitive matches in terms 3 and 4.

FRY’S BOWLING CLUB

Club honours Clive for his loyal service

FRY’S Bowling Club brought the 2023 playing season to a close by awarding life membership to Clive Davies at the AGM in October. A former employee of the chocolate factory, Clive joined Fry’s in 2005 after playing for Avonvale. He served the club as chairman from 2009-2011 as well as taking care of clubhouse. A much-loved member, never without some good stories, he sadly had to stop playing this season due to ill health. The club look forward to welcoming Clive to club when he is able. The following week, Fry’s held their annual presentation dinner at Somerdale Pavilion. It began by honouring the finalists of the triples competition, which was held on a showery July day. Just missing out on the title were runners-up Pat Slavin, Sally Morgan and Dave Shaw, with the title going to Kevin Smith, Vernon Hopkins and Nick Grenfell. In the pairs final, Dean Thomas and John Whatley took the runners-up trophies, with Ken Stewart and Roger Loader finally winning the title after many years of being randomly drawn together. With the team competitions presented, attention turned to the singles titles, which

started with two new competitions. After seeing an increase in ladies joining the club, a new ladies singles competition was introduced, played in a round-robin format. The runner-up was Sally Morgan, with Carol Grenfell winning the inaugural title. In an effort to stop the under 30s winning (almost) everything, drastic action was taken and a competition for the over 70s was introduced. Jeff Budd made the first final, but Nick Grenfell took the title. This drastic action proved invaluable, as our under 30s took the remaining four singles titles. Callum Gwinnell claimed his first singles title in the novices, over John Whatley. Youth was a guaranteed winner in the two wood, with Jonathan Day taking the title from Stephen Day, as well as a comfortable win in the handicap over Roger Loader. The singles title saw Callum Gwinnell play Nick Grenfell, with both players looking to bag

their second singles title. Youth came out on top in a close encounter, with Callum taking his second title of the season. The non-competition awards saw Jonathan Day pick up an award that, despite the many titles, proved that even some of the best have Shots Gone Wrong. In the Bristol St Andrew’s Floodlit League, a horribly offline bowl, which was closer to the adjacent rink than the jack, took a massive wick off a wide bowl that saw his bowl come in for another counting shot. A worthy winner of Shot Gone Wrong. Best newcomer was Lynne Nicholls, with the award for most improved going to Terry Morgan. The award for club member of the year went to Dave Shaw for the second year in row. That brought the curtain down on the 2023 season. Attention turns to the short mat sessions in the clubhouse, along with social events throughout the winter, and planning for the 2024 outdoor season.
