Roundabout 'could reduce air pollution' A HANHAM parish councillor believes a roundabout at the junction of the High Street, Whittucks Road and Highfield Avenue could help reduce pollution levels. Bernard Jackson says he gets many calls from people concerned about toxic fumes affecting their health. Mr Jackson, from Hanham Parish Council, says residents also find it difficult to drive in and out of their homes because traffic is so congested. He now hopes South Gloucestershire Council will carry out a feasibility study and is meeting transport bosses to discuss the project. Mr Jackson said: “I came up with the idea because of the number of complaints I receive from people in Hanham High Street and Stonehill about vehicles sitting outside their homes for quite a long time with their engines idling. “No one wants to give way, especially at early evening rush hour. One lady said she's washed her nets about four times in a month because of the soot and deposits. Turn to Page 2

New roundabout at From Page 1 “Traffic needs to keep on the move. At about 5pm the queue at the lights will be back along the Blue Bowl right up past the Butcher's Arms in Longwell Green. “Pollution is a big issue with Bristol looking to ban diesel cars in the centre so this is a spin-off of that.” Mr Jackson said the other roundabout at the bottom of Bryant's Hill near the new retirement flats is evidence the scheme would be worth investigating. “Traffic seems to flow well there. The roundabout keeps traffic on the move. Admittedly it seems to be the pelican lights through Hanham which cause most of the problems with that roundabout.” He believes his suggestion is at least logistically possible. “There's enough room there to easily put a roundabout

in. Plus you also have wide pavements there. It will need pelican lights on all the junctions off the roundabout so people can cross the roads safely. There has to be a feasibility study on it to see if it's possible and affordable for the council to do. “This is just an idea at the moment; there is nothing set in stone. Even if it was decided tonight it would probably be another four or five years before it was finished. By then we might all be driving around in electric cars anyway!” Mr Jackson was due to meet council officers as the Voice went to print. “It's a case of watch this space and I'll see what they can come up with. They will have to look at the flow of traffic and get the counters out before they can decide if it's feasible but there will be money for schemes that will cut down pollution.” Resident Claire Swift said the road traffic on Stonehill has

t busy junction 'could cut pollution' been a long standing concern, exacerbated by the retail development in Longwell Green. “Some years ago we attended a public meeting where concerns over the impact of the retail units and leisure facilities were raised. Unfortunately the success of both of these has impacted on the traffic volumes we now see. “Having been a resident for over 20 years, the recent increase is significant and the idling of engines outside our home on average for two hours a day, mostly early evening, is a problem and one we would like to see addressed. Ironically the traffic clears once past the Blue Bowl. “Maybe the light sequencing needs to be adjusted here for certain periods of the day? "I’m not convinced a roundabout would achieve a freer flow of traffic but a review of the safety and flow of traffic along Stonehill is certainly long overdue.

The busy road junction at the Blue Bowl “I'm not totally against Cllr Jackson's idea, I'm glad someone else thinks it’s an issue, just not sure a roundabout will be effective. Surely a review of lights would be cheaper and quicker to do?” Mr Jackson's idea comes as new research suggests air pollution contributes to the premature death of five Bristolians every week.

If it’s News call 07715 770448 or 07880 731148

The latest study, carried out by a team from King’s College London, looked at the effect of the two most harmful forms of air pollution – nitrogen dioxide (NO2) and PM2.5 – in neighbouring Bristol. PM2.5 are tiny particles released mainly by wood smoke, coal burning, and industrial combustion. They can lodge in people’s lungs and cause very

serious health conditions. In cities, NO2 comes mainly from older polluting vehicles. The researchers found that, together, high levels of PM2.5 and NO2 contribute to up to 260 premature deaths each year in Bristol, according to the report, which was released on November 18. The research has been welcomed by Bristol mayor Marvin Rees, saying it supports the authority's plans to ban diesel vehicles from a central zone. The latest draft report on air quality in South Gloucestershire, which is subject to Defra approval, says the main air pollutant of concern is nitrogen dioxide which mostly arises from road traffic. The report highlights areas of concern in South Gloucestershire which include the Hambrook junction, Staple Hill, Kingswood and Cribbs Causeway but does not mention Hanham.

High St shop stars in national TV ad A SHOP in Hanham will be appearing on our television screens in the run-up to Christmas. Eclectic Gift Shop and owner Nicola Bartlett are starring in a high profile national advertising campaign to persuade people to use their local high street. They will feature in an advert as part of finance company Visa's #whereyoushopmatters campaign and will appear on national television. A preview of the ad has been posted on Facebook with customers, family and friends all posting messages of support for the entrepreneur. Filming took place back in October when a film crew from the advertising agency Saatchi and Saatchi descended upon the High Street. Nicola told Hanham and Longwell Green Voice: “I received a phone call from Saatchi and Saatchi’s team of researchers in the summer to explain that they would be working on Visa’s advertising campaign encouraging everyone everywhere to support small, independent businesses this Christmas and they would love for me to be involved. I was absolutely amazed and of course I said yes.” Filming took took two and a half hours. “The crew was lovely and the whole thing flew by. I’ve never done anything like this before so it was such an exciting

A festive looking Nicola in one of the scenes from the ad experience," Nicola said. The video was orignally made for the company's social media channels. However, Visa was so pleased with the ad that it is also now going to use it for Video On Demand on Sky and ITV. “I’m absolutely amazed that I’ll be on TV screens throughout the UK,” Nicola said. “I felt really proud when seeing the final ad. Saatchi and Saatchi did a brilliant job showcasing what we’re about and why it’s important to buy from independent businesses like ours. “I hope it captures how much I love running my business on the High Street and how much we enjoy being a part

of this brilliant community in Hanham.” This will be Nicola's second brush with national recognition,

as Eclectic Gift Shop had also been chosen to appear in a campaign for Small Business Saturday.

Waging war on garages flouting the rules CAR sales garages in Bryant's Hill and Nag's Head Hill have been targeted during a day of action in a blitz against illegal parking. It follows complaints from residents about the garages continually parking their vehicles on double yellow lines in nearby roads. The raid saw civil enforcement officers from the council team up with police and representatives from NSL to wage war on those who flout the rules.

St George Troopers Hill councillor Fabian Breckels The latest raids in Nicholas Lane, John Wesley Road, Preacher Closer and Dundridge Lane saw five untaxed vehicles clamped and towed away as well as fixed penalty notices dished out. One clamper was left with an injured hand while he was carrying out his job when one dealer attempted to drive off. The day of action follows a

previous successful operation a year ago when five on-the-spot penalty charge notices of up to £260 were issued by the council. Councillor Fabian Breckels, Labour and Co-operative councillor for St George Troopers Hill ward, said: “We have seen cars towed away that have been clogging up the streets of St George for months. These raids will now become more frequent, so the message to the car dealers is a simple one: become good neighbours or ship out. “I would like to thank our parking enforcement teams, the police, and NSL, who are the contractors working with the DVLA, for working together to bring this raid about. It was a good result. “These latest raids show that we are committed to tackling problem parking by some of Bristol’s dealers. Bristolians will, I am sure, join us in wishing a speedy recovery and return to work to the clamper who hurt his hand when one dealer tried to make a getaway mid-operation.” Previously, police, council and DVLA, who are all responsible for enforcement against different types of parking infringement, had not worked together in a coordinated way. The DVLA are responsible for unlicensed vehicles, while the police and council have some powers to remove vehicles on the road which contravene a parking restriction, block the road, or have broken down. Councillor Kye Dudd, cabinet member for transport at Bristol City Council, said: “Vehicles

parked illegally in our city become a hazard to pedestrians and other road users. “Removing vehicles that are not permitted to be on the highway will deter other anti-social behaviour such as vandalism and free up valuable parking spaces. “We plan to keep working with city partners and other outside agencies to make sure these days of action can happen more often.” Similar joint operations are planned across Bristol, after the success of the pilot raids in St George.

New lease secures future of railway THE future of a local heritage attraction is set to be secured with the agreement of a new 65-year lease over part of the Bristol to Bath Railway Path. The stretch in Bitton, which includes the popular railway station and track, has been occupied by Avon Valley Railway Heritage Trust since the 1970s, with the council having granted an initial 20-year lease of the site in 1982. But since its expiry in 2002, the agreement has been on a year-to-year basis. The charity is dedicated to restoring steam to the Avon Valley and has re-laid three miles of track and restored a locomotive and carriages. It welcomes more than 80,000 visitors each year. Following negotiations with the Trust, South Gloucestershire Council worked to broker a new 65-year lease that gives future stability to the attraction. Now only requiring formal

acceptance from the Trust, it also means they will be in a position to apply for funding which will progress plans to further develop existing facilities. Bitton and Oldland Common councillor Erica Williams said: “South Gloucestershire is an area rich with local history and it is important we preserve this wherever we can. The work put

in by Avon Valley Railway Trust and their many volunteers to share that heritage with the communities around them, as well as tourists, is fantastic and it is great to know they will be around for a long time to come.” Fellow councillor Paul Hughes added: “The Railway Path is a unique feature for our area, offering a lovely rural

transport route that connects many of our communities, as well as being a popular outdoor location for people to exercise and be active. To continue offering a historic and educational aspect can only add to the value of this wonderful asset.” Cllr Ben Burton, cabinet member for corporate resources said: “I am delighted that the council has been able to work towards this new lease with Avon Valley Railway Heritage Trust. We have an excellent working relationship with them and are fully supportive of their continued operation.” An Avon Valley Railway Heritage Trust spokesman said: “We welcome the progress so far on the new lease and on its completion it will provide the necessary security of tenure in helping us to achieve our future plans.”

Veteran Raymond shares wartime tales YOUNGSTERS at Christchurch Pre-School in Hanham marked Remembrance by meeting a World War Two veteran. Raymond Laver, who will celebrate his 98th birthday this month, told the children his amazing stories from his time in the war. The boys and girls showed him some poppies they have been colouring and joined Raymond and staff in a two-minute silence. Raymond is the great granddad of Freddy, who attends the preschool, and older sister Megan. At the end of the visit Freddy presented his great granddad with a card made by the children to say thank you. Raymond told his captive audience that he was called up to the Second World War at the age of 19. He served two years in the North African Desert War, before being posted to India for a further two years.

Staff were honoured to meet Raymond, who is pictured above right with his poppy card While in India, Raymond was stationed on an advance flying boat base before moving to mobile units as an advanced wireless operator, earning him

the nickname Sparky. He proposed and became engaged to his wife Brenda just before he was first posted. Brenda waited four years for him

and after returning to the UK in January 1946, they married two months later. Pre-School chair Katie Gingell said: “The staff had been making poppies with the children leading up to Remembrance Day so to have Raymond come in and tell the children first-hand the meaning behind the poppies was extraordinary. “It was an absolute pleasure to welcome Raymond to our pre-school and we were all very grateful and honoured to meet him.”

War memorial unveiled at rugby ground A WAR memorial has been unveiled at the home of Dings Crusaders RFC in tribute to the fallen men who helped found the club. The memorial honours 62 members of the Shaftesbury Crusade, a Christian mission based at the Dings in St Philips which encouraged young people to take part in sport, eventually leading to the establishment of the rugby club. It was unveiled on Saturday November 16, prior to the Dings Crusaders vs Taunton match. The sandstone memorial was donated by the Sanigar family in memory of their brother Mike, a stalwart member of Dings Crusaders RFC. A service, conducted by former Dings player Canon Trevor Denley, took place during the unveiling. Canon Denley, who lives in St George, said: “I've been a member of the rugby club for over 55 years and felt very moved while taking the service. “There were around 80 people there, some of them descendants of some of the soldiers whose names were mentioned on the memorial. It was wonderful to have so many people there. It was a very

(Herbert William) Rudge, with around twenty relatives of those listed on the memorial in attendance. The niece of Albert Wollen, 90-year-old Sheila Troll, was present alongside her daughter Anneliese. Sheila’s father Sidney Wollen, Albert’s brother, was a pre-war Territorial who served in the army during the Great War and was a member of Dings Crusaders Combination Cup winning side of 1920. During a two minute silence, the full names of the men listed on the memorial were read out by rugby club president Ray Bowden, chairman Steve Lloyd, Derek Gunningham, of Bristol Funeral Directors, and historian Ian Haddrell. A poppy wreath with a Dings RFC badge at its centre was laid at the memorial by Mike

Sanigar's brother Dennis. Mr Haddrell discovered there was an original memorial to honour the men when researching his book The History of Dings Crusaders Rugby Club, published in 2017. He said: “During the course of my research I discovered that there was a memorial tablet to the 62 men of the Shaftesbury Crusade who lost their lives during the First World War, which was originally located in the main entrance of the Shaftesbury Crusade building, on the corner of Kingsland Road and Oxford Street, St Philips. “The Great War hit the Shaftesbury Crusade very hard as 346 of its members joined up and the 62 men killed represented a casualty rate of some 18 per cent; a high proportion for a local organisation with a relatively small membership.” In 1921 the Shaftesbury Crusade decided to place a tablet on the wall of their building as a memorial to the members who

fell in the Great War, and also to put a drinking fountain in a new playground which was being built nearby. Ian, who has published eight books on local history and sport, said: “It was felt that a fountain would be not only an ornamental memorial but also a useful one, and would be especially appreciated by the number of boys and girls who would use the playground, many of them children and relatives of the men who lives were given for their country. Unfortunately the installation of the fountain never happened as insufficient funds were raised.” In 1965 the Crusaders moved to new premises in Salisbury Street, Barton Hill, taking the First World War memorial tablet with them. Ian said: “A report made on the memorial in August 1994 stated that the building in Salisbury Street had been sold by the Shaftesbury with the memorial in situ. It further stated that the brass memorial was known to have been in poor condition from 1984. The list of 62 names on the memorial tablet was recorded and sent at the same time to the Imperial War Memorial’s register and to the Bristol Archives. “Sometime after that date the memorial disappeared and has not been seen since.” In 2018 Dings Crusaders RFC moved from their Lockleaze home of 70 years to a new purpose-built sport facility at Frenchay, named Shaftesbury Park in recognition of the club’s origins.

Crews tackle chippie fire FIRE crews were called out after a fire in a chip shop in Hanham. Three fire engines attended George's Fish Bar in the High Street at about 7.15pm on Friday November 8. It is believed the fire was caused by an electrical fault under the floorboards on the ground floor. A spokesman for Avon Fire and Rescue: “At 19:17, crews from Kingswood and Hicks Gate fire stations were mobilised to a fire at a commercial property on the High Street in Hanham. “On arrival, six firefighters in breathing apparatus used two high pressure hose reels and two 45mm jets to extinguish the fire. They also used a positive pressure ventilation fan to clear smoke from the property. The cause is thought to be accidental.”

Brother and sister pedal for Pudsey

Alistair in action during his 30-mile cycle ride

Rowena and brother Alistair

A BROTHER and sister from Longwell Green have used pedal power to raise £350 for Children in Need. Dynamic duo Alistair and Rowena Combe embarked two separate journeys to Bath. Rowena, six, cycled with dad Ewan from their home to Bitton, then along the Bristol-Bath Railway path to Bath, and back again, totalling 15 miles. The Longwell Green Primary School pupil had never cycled

Limpley Stoke, and followed the canal path back into the centre of Bath, before retracing their route on the Bristol-Bath Railway path. With a little addition to Warmley and back, Alistair covered a total of 30 miles. Martine said: “We did the cycle rides the day after the televised Children in Need show, on Saturday November 16. We were lucky to have dry and mild weather, although there were plenty of muddy puddles

more than 12 miles, but fuelled by jelly beans and bananas, she did an admirable job. Nine-year-old Alistair, who attends the same school as his sister, and mum Martine cycled the same route to Bath, then picked up the Two Tunnels Greenway and headed through the Devonshire tunnel and the 1.7km long Combe Down tunnel before emerging in Midford. From there they took country lanes to the Dundas Aquaduct at

on the canal path for Alistair to cycle through. Rowena had never cycled more than 12 miles previously, and all this was on a bike without gears. “Together they raised over £350 for Children in Need, and are very proud of their achievements.” You can boost Alistair and Rowena's total by visiting https://www. justgiving.com/fundraising/ combecyclechallenge

Tots play their part CHILDREN from Hanham Toddlers Pre-School had fun wearing their Pudsey-themed outfits to celebrate Children in Need. They coloured pictures of the charity's mascot and played with yellow, red, blue and green modelling dough. The special day at the Hanham Methodist Church-based preschool raised a grand total of £58 for the charity. Manager Lorraine Bunting said: “Staff and children look forward to Children in Need every year. “Everyone had a great time and raised some much needed funds at the same time.”

Users help to redesign railway path PEOPLE who use or live near the Bristol and Bath Railway Path have been helping to redesign it. Transport charity Sustrans has been given £1.1 million to improve the busiest stretch of the path and is inviting everyone from commuter cyclists to pedestrians and wheelchair users to have a say in how problems and conflicts can be sorted. In November three community "co-design" workshops were held at venues near the stretch of the path earmarked for improvements, from Whitehall and Easton to St Philip's. People were asked to suggest ways the path could be improved at five key areas: the bends at Clay Bottom, by Whitehall Primary School, Easton Community Centre, Russell town Avenue and the underpass below St Philip's Causeway. As well as adding suggestions to hands-on maps of the areas, people at the workshops were encouraged to put themselves in the place of other path users. Sustrans will now take the ideas away and come up with designs which can be refined with the public's help at more workshops, which will take place at the Rose Green Centre in Whitehall from 3.30-7pm on December 9 and at Easton Community Centre from 5-7pm on December 10. People who cannot make either workshop

can give their ideas online at qrco.de/Onepath. Sustrans has also visited community and interest groups to ask for their input. Redesign project manager Alex Bottrill said: "All of the design ideas on maps were photographed, and will be used by the design team to develop the designs, creating options to present at the next ‘co-refine’ sessions. Alongside the design meetings, members of the design team have been working hard to make sure we gather a broad range of views about how the path can be improved. "More than 140 people have taken part in the community workshops so far, and a similar number have got involved online. The Bristol and Bath Railway Path – One Path Facebook group has grown rapidly since the project began and now has almost 900 members. "We have been busy meeting with disability groups, walking and cycling groups, sharing resources with local schools, older people’s groups, and working with a network of community connectors, with the support of Bristol City Council, to increase involvement and representation from the whole community." He said the project team would continue to welcome any further thoughts on improving the path.

Denim and Diamonds boost cancer charity A GLITZY charity bash at Hanham Community Centre has raised thousands of pounds for Bristol breast cancer charity BUST. Committee member Susan Grant and her two friends, Caron Honour and Cath Palmer, all breast cancer survivors, organised the Denim and Diamonds evening which took place on Saturday November 9. Consultant surgeon Simon Cawthorn performed at the event with his band The Diagnostics and DJ Jimmy Gee manned the decks. Around 200 people attended the event, raising a grand total of £3,000, which included a £200 contribution from the Co-op at Hanham Common. Local businesses also contributed towards the event and donated towards the raffle and buffet. Support came from Greggs; Cottage Bakery, Downend; Jones Bakers, Nags Head Hill; Italian Kitchen, Hanham; Fleurtations florist, Hanham; Wild about Flowers, Keynsham; Don Giovanni's, Temple Meads, Asda, Tesco, Morrisons and Bristol Gas. BUST (Breast Cancer Unit Support Trust) was formed in 1991 by breast cancer patients at Frenchay Hospital. The charity is now the major funding partner for the Bristol Breast Care Centre which opened at Southmead Hospital in 2015.

n KINGSWOOD HISTORY SOCIETY IN a last minute change our November talk was ‘In and Around Bristol & Gloucestershire 1914-1918’. John Penny told us about the Home Front and the invaluable work done by the civilian workforce, particularly women, whose major contribution to winning WWI is often overlooked. Many manufacturing companies switched from their normal products to war work with an expanded workforce – mostly female. Many products were changed to military purposes such as Douglas motorcycles who also made static engines for pumps and electricity generators. In excess of 3 million boots were made in Kingswood for military use, a National Shell Factory was established in St Phillips and a shell filling factory in Quedgeley using explosives made in Coleford from Toluene distilled in Portishead. The British & Colonial Aircraft Company in Filton and Brislington made Bristol Fighters, Scouts and the B.E.2 reconnaissance aircraft. In Warmley, the Crane’s Fireworks Factory switched production to hand grenades with a workforce increased to nearly 100, mostly young women. Ten million grenades were made, which shows what a tremendous effort the firm made during the war. In Shirehampton a horse veterinary depot was established to ensure the supply of over 7,000 horses and mules for the Front. There were also military hospitals at the BRI, Southmead, Bishop’s Knoll and Fishponds. None of these undertakings could have functioned without the female workforce who were also essential in the Land Army. On December 3 we shall hold our AGM, Christmas Quiz and American supper - surely unmissable! Kingswood History Society meets on the first Tuesday of each month (March-December) at 7.30pm, in the Park Centre, Kingswood High Street, (opposite the Civic Centre BS15 9TR, parking in Hollow Road, opposite the Civic Centre). Anyone interested in joining us should visit our website www. kingswoodhistorysociety.org or just come along to our meetings. Cost is £2.50 per visit including refreshments. Annual subscription is only £20.

n ELECTION SUPPLEMENT

Your candidates Kingswood constituency VOTERS go to the polls on December 12 for the country's third general election in less than five years. In Kingswood, the Conservatives are defending a majority of 7,500 from the last election in 2017. Chris Skidmore won the seat from Labour's Roger Berry in 2010 and Labour has come second in the two elections since, having previously held the seat from 1992. This year, there are five parties contesting the constituency: the others are the Liberal Democrats, Greens and the Animal Welfare Party. As in all Tory-held seats, the Brexit Party is not standing a candidate. The constituency runs from Emersons Green in the north to Bitton in the south, including the New Cheltenham, Kingswood, Woodstock, Parkwall & Warmley, Hanham, Longwell Green and Bitton & Oldland Common wards, as well as Siston. The Voice has asked every candidate nominated in the election to tell us about themselves and their aims. They are included here in the order they will appear on the ballot paper.

Angelika Cowell Kingswood ANGELIKA Cowell has been a teacher for many years in Gloucestershire and Bristol. She lived for a few years in Vietnam and since her return has been a member of the Animal Welfare Party after deciding to commit herself to actively engaging in issues that she believes are important. She has decided to put herself forward to stand in the 2019 election for the Animal Welfare Party because she wants to raise the profile of the suffering of animals and believes that history will view the current industrialised exploitation of animals with shame. She feels that now is the time to create a more ethical environment for animals and to protect their status in law, much as we have done for humans over the last century. When not teaching, Angelika loves walking in mountains, reading and cooking experimental vegan dishes for friends. She has two grown-up children and lives in Bristol. She is standing in Kingswood as a way of spreading the message of the Animal Welfare Party and giving animals a voice.

NICOLA Bowden-Jones lives near Cossham Hospital with her family and is a parent of a child who attends a South Gloucestershire school. Nicola works for the NHS as a Mental Health Specialist. Nicola would bring real world experience to the role of MP having worked in youth, family and health services in this country and abroad. Nicola was elected as a Councillor in 2016 and soon won a place on the first Jo Cox Women in Leadership programme where she was encouraged to stand for Parliament. She was elected as the Labour candidate for Kingswood with 86% support. Nicola campaigns on local issues, most recently supporting local residents to overturn a Council decision to shut a children’s resource centre in Emerson’s Green. Nicola’s main interests focus on children’s education, health and wellbeing, supporting families to thrive and ensuring adequate care facilities for all family members. Nicola has a very hands-on approach to supporting communities and will work hard for improvements locally and nationally. Recently Nicola proactively supported Bristol and Kingswood Labour to develop policies for the Labour Party’s Green New Deal, currently the most progressive policy of all the political parties for tackling climate change and creating new green industries.

In the UK, the most nature depleted country on Earth, we will increasingly experience disastrous droughts and flooding. 5% of people in Kingswood currently die from causes associated with air pollution. "Despite this we have spent nearly a decade under austerityobsessed Conservative rule and, where are we now? The UK is failing to hit nearly all our inadequate targets on climate change. The super-rich are richer and everyone else is poorer. The NHS has been ravaged and left to rot. British wildlife has been slaughtered, culled and has vanished. Our greenfields have been built on. Our community services hollowed out. Dine Romero Kingswood "MY name is Dine Romero, and I am proud to be standing for election to be the next Member of Parliament for Kingswood. I have over 15 years’ experience as a campaigner and as a local councillor. "As your MP, I promise to stand up for local people and communities, and to focus on local issues that are often overlooked by other politicians. As a councillor, I have already supported local businesses and schools, objected forcefully to inappropriate developments in the area and encouraged the West of England Mayor to declare a climate emergency. "As a Member of Parliament, I will focus on tackling the climate emergency; building a stronger and greener economy; and securing proper funding for local schools and health services. I believe that social care must be put on an equal footing with the NHS and both urgently require extra funding. I am convinced that adding a penny per pound in income taxation and ringfencing it solely for health and social care will help to address the immediate crisis. "I believe that Brexit must be stopped: it will be bad for the people of Kingswood and impact the local economy, public services and the environment."

Chris Skidmore Kingswood "I’M proud to be standing again as your local MP. As someone who was born and grew up in the constituency, there is no greater honour than serving my home area. "Over the past ten years, I’ve fought tirelessly for the maximum possible investment in Kingswood. Whether that’s seeing Cossham hospital being refurbished after being threatened with closure under the previous Labour government, to securing four new schools for the constituency, holding nearly 20 Jobs Fairs which have helped to keep unemployment at record low levels, I am here as the only local candidate to serve you regardless how you vote. "The Kingswood constituency voted to leave the EU- and I believe that your MP should respect this result. This election has been called because Labour and Lib Dem MPs don’t trust the people and have repeatedly blocked Brexit. "With this election, now the time to get Brexit done by backing Boris Johnson’s plan to get our country going again, and to deliver what Kingswood voted for. "I will always be here for you - delivering on your local priorities, and standing up for our local area."

Local charity and care and housing provider Brunelcare hosted the drop-in session at One Church, which is opposite the new development in Earlstone Crescent. The home, called Little Heath, is due to be completed in February 2020 so the event was timed to ensure all staff would be appointed in time. Visitors found out about careers on offer including carers, nurses, maintenance operatives, cleaners and chefs. Brunelcare canvas bags with information about Little Heath and career opportunities were given out during the event, which ran from 1pm-8pm. Marius Popescu, Little Heath care home manager, said: “We are really excited for the new care home to open in February

Man dies at council meeting

A MAN who died at a South Gloucestershire Council meeting has been named as 87-year-old Tony Jenkins. Mr Jenkins, of Wick High Street, was attending a planning meeting at Kingswood Civic Centre on October 31 when he was taken ill shortly before noon. The ambulance service was called and several paramedics fought for nearly an hour to save his life. He died at the scene. It is understood Mr Jenkins, a grandfather of six and passionate Bristol Rovers fan, suffered a heart attack just before he was due to make a speech objecting to a planning application near his home. A spokesman for the council released a statement later that day saying: “A member of the public was taken ill at a meeting at Kingswood Civic Centre this morning. “Staff and councillors rendered first aid and called the

emergency services, but very sadly, he passed away. “Our thoughts are with his family and loved ones at this very difficult time.” Council leader and Longwell Green councillor Toby Savage tweeted: “Thoughts and prayers are with this man's family and loved ones at this awful time. Thank you to @sgloscouncil staff and cllr first aiders who did all they could before paramedics arrived.” A spokesman for the ambulance service said: “South Western Ambulance Service were called on Thursday at just before midday about an incident at Kingswood Civic Centre. “We sent various resources to the scene including land ambulance crews, specialist paramedics and an air ambulance crew.” Police were called to carry out enquiries on behalf of the coroner.

n AROUND THE WIs Hanham Afternoon WI SINCE our last meeting several members of the group have visited the Theatre Royal in Bath. “Calendar Girls” is now a musical and made for a very good few hours of hilarious entertainment. Our monthly meeting coincided with Remembrance Day and time had been set aside to reflect on the importance of this occasion in our calendar. Several ladies read poems and prayers which had been written in honour of the fallen, from the two world wars. Memories of living during the last war were recounted by a few ladies who had lived through those times. Also, written memories by the father of one of our members who had been captured and held in a POW camp by the Japanese. We concluded the first part of the meeting with the Last Post, which signalled the beginning of the two minutes silence. The AGM followed, beginning with the members joining in with the famous WI anthem of Jerusalem. Annual reports were made by the retiring treasurer and secretary, followed by the president who had completed her first year in office. Members were then asked to vote for the committee they would like for the coming year. The nominations which had been put forward were all elected for the following year. Tea and cake brought this very busy afternoon to a successful conclusion. Our next meeting on December 9 (second Monday in the month) will be held at Hanham Community Centre beginning at 1.30pm. This will be our Christmas party meeting where we shall enjoy food, games quizzes and fun. If you would like to join us we would be very pleased to see you. For more information please contact Liz, tel 0117 961 1583.

Longwell Green WI OUR November meeting was our AGM. The main business of the evening was to meet the new committee and to elect next year’s president. Our WI advisor, Anne Bennett, organised the election for president and the outcome was

that Lynne Sherman has agreed to serve another year as president, which was warmly welcomed by everyone. Once this important piece of business was over we were entertained with poetry readings from the drama group. They read a range of poems – some with props! – which ranged from She Was Poor But She Was Honest and Will I Have To Be Sexy At 60 by Pam Ayres to Bustopher Jones by T S Eliot and Wordsworth’s Daffodils – impressively recited from memory by Jackie Lewis. We then abandoned our usual tea and biscuits for wine and cheese at social time. Also at this meeting our members brought gifts, toiletries and warm clothing to donate to women’s refuges at Christmas and once again were very generous. The knitting group has been knitting neck warmers to donate for chemotherapy patients and have made a large number which will be split between Weston Hospital and the BRI. A murder mystery evening was extremely enjoyable with everyone joining in and dressing up. The evening was set in a school and we had lots of amusing costumes as well as a pair of naughty school boys! There were two murders during the evening but order was maintained and the perpetrator was unmasked at the end. Our December meeting will be our Christmas party with a two-course meal and entertainment from Sister Act. Upcoming events include a trip to Blenheim Palace, craft fair and our Christmas meal at Saltford Golf Club. Our members now participate in three book clubs, a craft club, a walking group, a drama group, a skittles group, a knitting group and regular social suppers. On the first Thursday of the month we meet at the Chapel Coffee Shop in Longwell Green for Tea and Chat. Longwell Green WI meets on the third Friday of the month at 7.30pm in the Ellacombe Room at Longwell Green Community Centre and new members are always welcome. RE-ELECT

Chris Skidmore for Kingswood A message from Chris Skidmore your local choice to be your MP Dear Resident,

I’m standing again to be your MP - and wanted to let you know why. Firstly, I would be honoured to serve again the area that has been my home. I’m the only local candidate standing for the major parties. I was born and grew up in Longwell Green, before moving to Bitton. My first school was St Anne’s Primary in Oldland Common. My family for generations have lived in the area. Secondly, I want to continue to make our community an even better place to live and work. Over the past ten years, I’ve fought tirelessly for your local neighbourhood. With my local office on Hanham High Street, I’ve helped over 30,000 residents with casework. I’ve also held nearly 20 Jobs Fairs during that time, helping local people into work - unemployment has fallen by over 40% since 2010. A strong economy means that we can invest in public services. I have fought successfully for six new schools in the constituency - including the brand new Digitech School in Warmley and an expansion of Warmley Park School - while we are now ensuring every primary school pupil will get a minimum of £4000. While Cossham hospital was threatened with closure under Labour- now it’s had a £21million refurbishment and only last month the Health Secretary announced that the hospital would receive a new £1m MRI scanner. And I’ve been keen to stand up for key local issues that I know matter to you. I’ve continued to protect the Hanham Hills and the Green Belt around Longwell Green and Warmley- threatened under the previous Labour government - while thanks to local Conservatives we are investing £3m in Kingswood High Street, and we are expanding the Mangotsfield Sort It centre thanks to a local campaign run by myself and Conservative councillors. I’ve also secured community investments that include £2m for the Batch community centre in Cadbury Heath. Unlike the other candidates, I also believe in respecting our democracy. Kingswood voted to leave the EU- and I have always voted in Parliament to leave and honour the referendum result, unlike Labour and Lib Dem MPs. Since I’ve been your representative, Labour has had four candidates, who come and go at election time. I am here for you all year round and would be delighted to serve you again as your prospective local MP. With very best wishes,

Chris Skidmore

n LETTERS 'Suicide corner' deserves better I FIND the council's reponse to the recent article about the dangerous crossing on Crews Hole Road to be insulting to say the least. You have a road crossing that is so dangerous that it has been dubbed 'suicide corner' but all that has been suggested are signs to be installed (£26,000 of them). Surely that money would have been better put on hold until more can be raised to actually install infrastructure and road furniture to physically slow traffic such as a raised speed table with a zebra crossing. Signs will do little to reduce traffic speeds as is proved time and time again. Physical furniture and enforcement are the only method of making this safe. Would I therefore be right in assuming that unless fatalities or serious injuries occur at this location little will be done other than signage? It would seem as though someone is going to have to 'take one for the team' before any further work will even be considered. Stanley Rogers Hanham

It's not a national toast service I FELT absolutely incensed at Antony Gregor in the November issue of the magazine. He has allegedly described Cossham Hospital’s toast ban “disgusting”. He, and the other patients, may

n NEWS need to be reminded that the NHS is providing thousands of pounds worth of life saving treatment to them - completely free of charge. This is not a given, or what they are due, this is something to be immensely grateful for because there are millions of people worldwide who do not have access to healthcare. I would call babies dying from easily curable diseases disgusting - not that patients aren’t being given a piece of toast of a morning during their free treatment. Many people start work at 7am and manage to eat breakfast in the morning. However, if they do not want to eat breakfast that early, then perhaps they could take just a little bit of responsibility, and make themselves a packed lunch to take that they could eat at the same time as the usual toast round so they can still have the camaraderie of eating together. The NHS is in crisis, we may not have it for much longer, a step towards ensuring its survival is if entitled patients would stop having the ridiculous expectation of being constantly fed and taxi’d to and from hospital. The NHS is a gift that we are all lucky to have, it is a National HEALTH service, so its role is to provide treatment for patients, and not a service that is obliged to feed people that cannot be bothered to make themselves a sandwich the night before. I hope this can be passed on to Antony Gregory so maybe he can get his use of the term “disgusting” in perspective.

THE Asda Foundation has handed over £700 to the Carers Support Centre to support its work in Bristol and South Gloucestershire. Margaret Nash, from the centre, received the cheque from Susan Grant, community champion at Asda Longwell Green. The money will fund Carers Rights Day activities as well as the Christmas buffet at the centre, which is based at Vassall Centre in Fishponds. A carer is someone who provides unpaid support to family or friends who could not manage without their help. This could be caring for a relative, partner or friend who is ill, frail, disabled or has mental health or substance misuse problems. There are 40,138 carers in Bristol and 27,639 carers in South Gloucestershire.

End the Decade of Cuts in Public Services Nicola Bowden-Jones is offering a future of hope and ambition for Kingswood. Local public services including schools, the NHS and care services have been cut back during 9 years of Conservative Government. Council housing is now run by a housing association based in Wolverhampton, private housing is too expensive for most people to rent or buy, food banks are booming and small businesses have seen increases in their taxes. Nicola Bowden-Jones is Labour’s candidate for Kingswood. Nicola works as a mental health specialist for the NHS and has worked locally in youth services, support services and MOD procurement. “I have been saddened by the stories of people struggling to pay for their parents care into old age, schools denied funding for essential items and children with special needs being refused services.” Nicola backs Labour’s plans to invest in our essential services and is particularly keen to see money going to support children and families. “Children are our future and Labour’s plans to increase spending on schools and reopening Sure Start centres builds the foundations our society needs.”

But where will the money come from? Britain has a record number of billionaires and a large number of multinational companies which are paying very

n NEWS Christmas coffee morning

Time to hunt the snowman

KINGSWOOD Heritage Museum is to hold a Christmas Stocking Filler coffee morning on December 11, starting at 10.30am. 2018's event was a great success, and raised a considerable sum to support the museum's work. Once again, the Friends' shop will be open, with a large selection of second-hand books, CDs, DVDs, vinyl records and other gifts. The museum is in the former Champion Brass Works, at Tower Lane, Warmley, BS30 8XT, just off the ring road).

Pupils get into film to improve learning TEACHERS in two primary schools in St George and Whitehall are learning how to use film in the classroom to improve children's reading and writing. Summerhill Academy and Whitehall Primary School are among ten Bristol schools who have signed up for Film for Learning. As part of the four-year project, teachers are being trained how to use film clips and film-related activities in the classroom, use film-related texts to improve reading and writing, and teach children how to make short films. The project has been devised by national film education charity Into Film and supported by local industry body Bristol City of Film, education charity Paul Hamlyn Foundation, city media company Boomsatsuma and the city council. One senior leader and two

Teachers learn new ways that film can be used to help learning other teachers from each school is being trained as part of the four-year programme. They will share what they have learned with colleagues. Bristol UNESCO City of Film Coordinator Natalie Moore said: “Weaving film into the education experience from an early age has been proven to be fantastically beneficial for young people, so I’m very excited that Bristol

schoolchildren will be receiving this experience. "Film for Learning has been one of our key priorities from the outset, as embedding creativity into education is a key objective for the UNESCO Creative Cities Network." Boomsatsuma creative projects manager Lyndsay Davies said: “The aim is to empower teachers to embed film

resources into their everyday literacy practices. With such engaging and diverse resources available, we hope the project will see students more active in their learning and inspired to know more about film. "It’s also fantastic that we have such a wide cross section of schools across the city. One key aspect of the project’s development is that resources and learning will be disseminated to wider school communities. This will allow more Bristol schools to benefit from the project and make the outcomes even more meaningful." Into Film learning coordinator Nichola Clarke said: “We’re looking forward to seeing a positive impact on the literacy and digital literacy skills of pupils from the 10 schools in the Bristol area." School comes alive with the sound of music PUPILS and staff at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Primary in Kingswood have taken part in a week of singing, dancing and creating music. Executive headteacher Rita McLoughlin said the event had brought a "wonderful buzz" to the school. “Pupils worked together on a series of projects such as learning ceilidh dance reels or making junk orchestral instruments together," she said. "The challenge to staff was too see how many areas of the curriculum could be taught through music” She added that the music enrichment week had mental health benefits. “This year, Our Lady of Lourdes is working towards achieving the Mental Health School award, and we enjoyed

ourselves a great deal this week; encouraging our children to sing, loud and proud, as part of a group, whilst not being inhibited by negative perceptions that ‘I can’t sing’ or ‘I’m no good’.” Sport can also have a positive impact on mood, and OLOL’s sports enrichment

programme resulted in the children trying activities they may never have tried before. This included trying their hands at Indo Boarding – which is indoor surfing on a giant roll – agility activities, forest schools’ projects and even a Strictly Come Dancing day. To bring more joy to the playground, new marking have also been laid down. Other projects that the school has worked on include European Day of Languages, Anti-Bullying Week, Road Safety Week, National Apple Day and National Teachers and Teaching Assistants Day. Most recently, Our Lady of Lourdes paid their respects with a Remembrance Service. The Year 6 students made a poppy wreath full of prayers and intentions, laying it on the war memorial in Kingswood church.

Why is the NHS offering carers a free flu jab this winter?

0117 9322293 24 Ellacombe Road, Longwell Green, BS30 9BA This column by Jess Williams of Ellacombe Pharmacy aims to help educate patients on a range of conditions and provide information to help maintain their well being while also easing pressure on GP surgeries by promoting self care

A

LL of us agree that helping to look after someone else is great kindness. Carers can be neighbours, friends, and family members or people working in a paid job, but all are truly priceless. This winter the NHS is encouraging all Carers, especially unpaid relatives, friends and all paid home carers to take up the free NHS Flu jab available to them. Who is eligible, and why? • If you are over 18 years and care for an older or disabled person whose welfare would be at risk if you were ill, you may be able to get a free NHS flu vaccine. You can also get one if you get carer’s allowance. • Health and social care staff, employed by a registered residential care/nursing home or registered domiciliary care provider or a voluntary managed

hospice provider, if you are directly involved in the care of vulnerable patients/clients, you will also be eligible for a free NHS flu vaccine. It is free to carers because you need it. This is to ensure that carers are protected against catching flu and developing serious complications. Did you know that even if had a flu jab, you can get the flu from a carer especially if you have a lowered immune system? If a carer is struck down by the

flu and becomes too ill to care, there may be no-one else who can step in and look after the person they care for. It can result in needing to move out of their home or longer hospital stays. Carers who catch the flu may have no symptoms, (not everyone does) but will still spread it to those they are looking after and their own families too. The flu jab is the safest way to protect against the flu. No serious side effects (aching arm most common) and it cannot cause the flu (It is not a live vaccine). Also the NHS now uses the more effective vaccines for better protection. This service is funded by NHS England and provided by Ellacombe Pharmacy. No appointment is needed to get to flu jab so just come in. Call us on 0117 932293 to find out more.

New boss has big plans for St Peter's A FORMER army bomb squad commando has taken over the reins of one of Bristol’s most loved charities. Brigadier Frank Noble, 56, has replaced Simon Caraffi as chief executive officer at St Peter’s Hospice, which celebrated its 40th anniversary last year. The charity, which has a shop in Hanham's High Street, has just undergone one of its biggest projects in recent years to raise £6.5m to build an inpatient unit at its site in Brentry. A huge fundraising effort from the people of Bristol raised a substantial sum towards the cost of the unit, which took patients for the first time last November. “There’s a real business to run here,” said Frank. “We have 51 shops and need to raise 80 per cent of our funding every year. We have this wonderful unit but what I’ve learnt since coming here is that much of our care is in the community. Of the 2,877 referrals we received last year, 245 were inpatients. “We run a 24/7 adviceline, community care nurses, hospice at home service, a day programme, and a host of volunteers who help with bereavement and hospice support, as well as shopping and donating. Our need is never going to go away. The services

Frank Noble is the new boss at St Peter's Hospice our volunteers provide and the hours they put in save us £2.1 million a year.” Frank is used to a challenge thanks to his time served in the army and in Whitehall. He joined the forces as a Royal Engineer in 1985 where he trained to be a commando, serving in the commando engineer squadron and commando bomb disposal unit, including support to the UK Special Forces. He was the engineer commanding officer in Northern Ireland when former British Prime Minister Tony Blair signed the peace accords. Frank received the Queen’s Commendation for Valuable

Service in 2006 for his work in Northern Ireland. Frank also led the commando bomb disposal unit during the First Gulf War conflict, supporting the Desert Rats. He moved to Bristol 10 years ago and ran defence equipment procurement programmes at Filton before taking a role managing the Defence’s training estate across the world, responsible for a team of 3,500 people. After leaving the army in 2015 Frank became operations director at Clifton College. He left Clifton College and started working with the former headmaster of the college’s

preparatory school John Milne, helping him to develop an educational consultancy business. While working with John, Frank started to write his book – Real Leadership, Through The Heart. The book, which contains many personal stories from Frank about his experiences in the army, is a how to guide to become a real leader, inspiring people to build successful and winning teams. While finishing the book he learned that St Peter’s Hospice was looking for a new CEO. Like everyone who steps through the door at the hospice, Frank felt instantly welcome. “I initially had a sense of nervousness about what working at a hospice would be like, because of the nature of the work done here,” he said. “But that went as soon as I walked through the door. I quickly saw that St Peter’s is a place full of life, joy, energy and humour. Everyone has been so lovely and welcoming. “I have always seen myself as a custodian of something. It’s a case of me looking after this wonderful charity for future generations.” All of the proceeds of Frank’s book are being donated to the hospice. The book is available on Amazon, search for Real Leadership.

Dozens jailed after drugs crackdown A TOTAL of 35 people involved in the supply of illegal drugs in Bristol have been sentenced to more than 70 years in prison following a successful police operation. Over three days (Nov 13 - 15), 31 people were sentenced at Bristol Crown Court for drugs supply offences. Four people have previously been sentenced. Operation Minimal was conducted between February and July with the aim of tackling the supply of class A drugs and reducing incidents of associated violence in the east Bristol area. More specifically, this operation focused on targeting established drugs lines and those operating them. The operation was launched in response to offences of

violence and drugs supply in east Bristol communities. Intelligence also demonstrated that organised crime groups were operating in this area and offenders were using and exploiting vulnerable people, including children, to supply and store drugs and money. Among those sentenced at Bristol Crown Court were: • Irie Lewis, 23, of Rosebush Gardens, St Anne's Park Charges: 2 counts of supply of crack cocaine; supply of diamorphine Sentence: 5 years and 219 days’ imprisonment • Lewis Parker, 19, of Brentry Road, Fishponds Charges: 2 counts of supply of crack cocaine; supply of

diamorphine and possession of cannabis Sentence: 2 years imprisonment suspended for 2 years, 180 hours unpaid work, electronically tagged curfew for 4 months • Shazeb Malik, 18, of Stanshaw Road, Frenchay Charges: 6 counts of supply of crack cocaine; 5 counts of supply of diamorphine Sentence: 2 years 4 months’ in a Young Offenders’ Institution Chief Inspector Paul Wigginton, local policing commander – Bristol East, said: “This is a really great set of results and removes a significant number of individuals responsible for the supply of illegal drugs off the streets of east Bristol.

“Drug dealing is a blight on the community and we take the supply of illegal drugs extremely seriously. This operation was initiated following community concerns about drug dealing in the area and the success is the result of months of hard work, dedicated officers and a coordinated effort working with Operation Remedy officers to catch and apprehend these criminals. “We are continually working hard to remove drug dealers from our streets and I hope these sentences will reassure the local community and send a clear message to other criminals that drug dealing will not be tolerated in Avon and Somerset and we will continue to pursue those who decide to break the law.”

Frenchay Christmas Tree Farm celebrates 20 years

A

S the picture shows, Father Christmas visited Frenchay Christmas Tree Farm in person this year, during his relaxing summer holiday. He came to wish the Christmas tree growers a very happy anniversary: 20 years of growing and cutting Christmas trees. Not only did he hand out presents to a few lucky children, he also remarked how beautiful the trees were. “Thousands of trees! Enough for everyone!” Having started out as a fairly modest concern of 6,000 trees in 1999, production has steadily increased to 35,000 trees to date, hoping to rise to 40,000 trees by 2021. So there really is plenty for all. For the growers, Peter and Simon Maughan, it has also been a gradual learning experience. “We pick up a lot of tips and techniques from our colleagues at the British Christmas Tree Growers Association, but often we just learn the hard way – when things go wrong! Flooding in 2012, plagues of aphids in 2009, and drought in 2018. In each case we weather the storm and adapt accordingly.” “One thing that I am particularly proud about,” explains Simon, “Is that we have stayed true to our environmental principles.” The farm was set up in 1999 with wildlife in mind. “While we are focused mainly on growing excellent Christmas Trees, I estimate that perhaps as much

as 60% of our land is not covered by tree foliage, and it is in places like these – in the hedgerows and in the spaces between trees – that native wildlife can exist.” “With over 97% of the UK’s wildflower meadows lost since the 1930s, it is important that we do what we can to conserve these habitats. We mow between the trees, rather than spray with weedkiller, which allows wildflowers to grow, and we have a lot of insect and animal life as a result.” 2019 looks to be a promising year for Frenchay Christmas Tree Farm. The warm wet summer has boosted growth, producing fullbodied trees with good foliage, and the general appearance of the trees is very good. Most excitingly, a new fully biodegradable Christmas tree net will be on trial. The first of its kind, it will be a huge step towards keeping the farm free of plastic. Frenchay Christmas Tree Farm will be welcoming visitors from late November until Christmas Eve, 9am-5pm every day. “Choose and Cut” runs for as long as stocks last. Prices start from just £25. Awards celebrate volunteers' good work VOLUNTEERS from groups helping to improve the Hanham and Longwell Green area were among more than 50 people thanked for the work they do to help maintain open spaces. South Gloucestershire Council’s Community Spaces Network hosted the event at the Bristol and Bath Science Park, welcoming volunteers from 28 different groups who work across the district to maintain parks, nature reserves and public rights of way. They included volunteer workers from the Friends of Kingswood Park; Friends of Avon Valley Woodlands in Hanham; Friends of Magpie Bottom Nature Reserve, Hanham; MOATivation, Longwell Green; Woodwatch, Wick, and Avon Wildlife Trust. The volunteers were thanked for the work they do by the Chair of South Gloucestershire Council, Brian Allinson, who said: “We know that without your help, our natural environment and the places we hold so close to our hearts would not be as beautifully cared for as they are. "Your help and hard work in all weathers is greatly appreciated and I would like to personally thank you and your members.”

Volunteers from the Forgotten Landscape project spoke about the importance of surveying wildlife and shared their experience of recording water voles, great crested newts and wetland birds along the Severn Estuary, while council officers delivered talks on climate change and the measures being taken by the local authority to achieve its target of becoming carbon neutral by 2030, and some friends’ groups hosted stands showcasing the work they do. The message is everyone is welcome and don't stay at home by yourself on December 25. The duo are charging just £5 a head to cover costs, which includes a lift to and from the

Gillian and Michelle set the first community cafe up in Longwell Green, which later moved to North Common, followed by ones in Speedwell, Kingswood and St George. Visitors to the cafes can buy lunch for a reasonable price, meet others and take part in activities and games, should they wish.
