The Styles of Ballroom, Social and Latin Dance Taught in This Course

The two main recognized styles of Ballroom Dancing are called American (which includes American Smooth and American Rhythm), and International (which includes International Standard and International Latin). Wikipedia explains these styles in detail as well as the broader definitions used for “ballroom dance” in the social dance world. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ballroom_dance The style of ballroom dance taught in this class for the Waltz is often referred to as “Chico State style”. It is a more casual style of ballroom dance than what you would see in competitions where American or International style ballroom dance “rules” are followed. The Swing style taught in this class is the Jitterbug, and the moves are a mix of “Chico State” and traditional American Style. The social dance Night Club Two-Step as taught in California dance studios. The Latin dances taught in this class include Merengue and Cha-Cha. The styles of Merengue come straight from the home of these dances, the Dominican Republic. The Cha-Cha style taught in this class is primarily Cuban, however many of the moves are a mix from a variety of sources, including LA and New York club dancing. This course emphasizes enjoyment and creativity. Once you have learned the moves on our list, you will be encouraged to experiment and make up your own patterns for each of the dances. The not-so-strict “rule” for social dancing professed and enforced by Catrina in this course is: Be creative! No pattern or move is “wrong” as long as it is: safe, “lead-able,” and on beat!
