In present-day Rome, a considerable number of piazzas have been converted into parking lots, while the prominent historic piazzas such as Piazza Navona, Piazza Venezia, and Piazza della Rotonda draw the majority of visitors. However, the revitalization of piazzas is an unavoidable necessity. The project focuses on two locations, Piazza della Quercia and Piazza di San Salvatore in Lauro, where architecture, art, and urban life intersect to highlight the distinctiveness and character of public squares as works of art and civic infrastructure that promote public and civic life. By exploring urban public space in Rome, a city with the most remarkable assortment of public squares in the world, the project interconnects architecture, art, and urbanism in their application to the reconstruction of the original urban fabric and the reinvention of public spaces as unique social sculptures in contemporary Rome.
Exploded Elevation for
Piazza Di San Salvatore in Lauro with Proposal
Both piazzas feature a church, which serves as the hub of activity and draws the most visitors. However, these churches appear to be the only public infrastructure within the squares. The absence of seating, circulation guides, and visual stimuli causes people to easily overlook the presence of the two piazzas. To address this issue, the surrounding buildings and programs should be oriented around the church to create a diverse range of public, private, and semi-public spaces. This will involve the creation of additional rest areas, improved circulation flows, and new attractions that blend seamlessly with the existing urban fabric and cultural context.

Piazza Di San Salvatore in Lauro
The charming Piazza di San Salvatore in Lauro, adorned with a beautiful church and mixeduse apartments with ground-floor retail, is situated next to the bustling Via del Coronari, a key route to historic sites like Piazza Navona and Castel Sant'Angelo. A proposed Roman-style Palazzo seeks to reduce the size of the piazza, direct traffic flow, and attract more residents to the area. A three-bay loggia facing the church and a free field serves as a public resting area, a guide for horizontal circulation, and a vertical visual attraction. The Palazzo will have retail spaces on its ground floor and the second floor of the loggia, accentuating the piazza's cultural ambiance and the retail street nearby. A semi-public rooftop garden offers stunning views of neighboring buildings, and the new simplified floor pattern serves as a welcoming invitation to visitors. This design proposal harmonizes perfectly with the existing site, visually and functionally blending into the environment.

Vertical Circulation
Piazza della Quercia boasts an exceptional collection of architecture events by renowned architects such as Borromini, Raphael, and Mazzoni. To enhance vertical circulation, a Venetianstyle tower is proposed, serving as a public viewing platform from 80ft and 120ft. The tower's striking presence is revealed as visitors approach the piazza, offering a unique perspective of Rome's skyline. The new simplified

Landscapes play an essential role in this project. A linear park runs along the northern edge of the building footprint, creating gathering spaces and buffer zones. Since the street to the east has the heaviest traffic as well as metro rails, the linear park is organized to reduce noise. There are three layers of sound buffering between the busy street and the residential units: palms trees and bushes in front of the community center, a man-made small hill underneath the community center, and a grid of trees on gravel at the public square. This series of landscapes reduces noise and creates a mysterious yet fun experience while discovering the residential units.
Walking further along the linear park, each building has a green space surrounded by shrubs, serving as a welcoming carpet and semi-public space for picnicking, with a tree providing shade. At the end of the linear park, a secret garden is placed. Trees create paths leading to the romantic focal point of the garden -- benches underneath an iconic live oak tree.
Ground floor units feature an entry point, living spaces, and private gardens. On the second floor, the layout is reversed with entry points on the horizontal walkway and porches instead of private gardens. These design elements provide residents with a sense of privacy while also encouraging community interaction and fostering a connection with the surrounding landscape.

To honor the memory of Soho's founder, Chester Rapkin, the Rapkin Tower, the tallest building in Soho, will be erected in collaboration with the Rapkin family and the city. The tower is intended to reflect the distinctive architecture of the surrounding neighborhoods. Soho is recognized for its cast-iron buildings, while Tribeca is characterized by brick constructions. In order to highlight Soho's unique features while connecting the neighboring communities, the Rapkin Tower will feature a facade made of steel, reminiscent of Soho's cast-iron architecture, and brick, nodding to nearby Tribeca.
Aldo Rossi's works and New York skyscrapers were researched to determine the building's massing and facade. The building footprint is offset from the property line, resulting in a narrower and more intricate structure. The front and back facades feature steel and glazing, while the sides incorporate brick with equally sized window openings. Steel panels frame the windows on the side, utilizing the same color as the front steel beam to unify the tower's elements. At the ground level and the top of the tower, the front glass and steel elements expand to the sides, creating a more transparent top and bottom. At night, the building serves as a beacon, with lights shining across the sky and roads, attracting people to visit the tower.

The Opa Locka Open Room is a testament to the power of thoughtful design and community-oriented planning. As part of a larger master plan to revitalize the Opa Locka neighborhood, this space stands out as a beacon of inclusivity and social interaction. A beautifully designed rosecolored sidewalk, flanked by a sturdy and functional concrete fence that doubles as seating, leads visitors to a welcoming rectangular plaza. Within the plaza, walls with cleverly designed openings invite passersby to peek in and glimpse the dynamic activities happening inside. To facilitate comfortable gathering and conversation, large-scale benches are thoughtfully placed along the walls. Behind the walls lies an expansive open-air multi-functional court that serves as a vibrant hub for community events and social activities.
Every aspect of the Opa Locka Open Room has been meticulously crafted with the intention of fostering connection and engagement. The thoughtful design choices and attention to detail are a testament to the architects' commitment to creating a space that truly meets the needs of the community it serves. From the warm color palette to the well-placed seating, every element has been carefully chosen to create a space that feels inviting, inclusive, and empowering. This space is a true gem, not just for the Opa Locka neighborhood, but for anyone who values the power of design to create meaningful and lasting social change.
