NESTED IS A 200 SQUARE FOOT SPACE FOR RETREAT AND MEDITATION LOCATED ALONG THE SHORES OF ROOTHOUSE LAKE IN HARRISON, WISCONSIN. THE GOAL WAS TO DESIGN A SPACE TO PROMOTE USER CONNECTION TO NATURE BY ALLOWING THEM TO EXPERIENCE THE VIBRANT FLORA AND FAUNA OF THE REGION. ANOTHER OBJECTIVE OF THE PROJECT WAS TO LIMIT DISRUPTION TO THE SURROUNDING FOREST. THE CONSTRUCT RESPONDS TO THE FOREST AND THE WOODEN MEMBERS BECOME MORE DENSE AT HIGHER ELEVATIONS, WHILE EACH MODULE MEETS THE GROUND AT A SINGLE POINT, OPENING UP THE LOWER LEVEL.

SCREEN AND FLOOR MEMBERS CAN BE CARRIED TO THE SITE AND ASSEMBLED

SMALL SCALE CONSTRUCTION EQUIPMENT WILL BE USED TO LIMIT IMPACT ON THE SITE



Illinois Native American Center CHAMPAIGN, IL FALL 2013


THE ILLINOIS NATIVE AMERICAN CENTER SERVES AS A CULTURE AND EDUCATION CENTER FOR THE UNIVERSITY OF ILLINOIS NATIVE AMERICAN HOUSE AND AMERICAN INDIAN STUDIES PROGRAM. THE PROGRAM OF THE PROJECT INCLUDES CLASSROOMS, LECTURE HALLS, GATHERING SPACES, ADMINISTRATIVE OFFICES AND A LARGE ATRIUM. THE ATRIUM SPACE IS ROUND TO REFLECT THE IMPORTANCE OF CIRCLES IN NATIVE AMERICAN CULTURE. A CORTEN STEEL SCREEN SYSTEM SURROUNDS THE SPACE AND IS INSPIRED BY PRAIRIE GRASSES FROM THE MIDWEST REGION. THESE GRASSES WERE OFTEN USED IN NATIVE AMERICAN STRUCTURES AND CRAFTS. THE SCREEN IS COMPRISED OF THREE PANELS REPEATED IN DIFFERENT PATTERS TO PROVIDE UNIFORMITY FOR FABRICATION YET VARIETY WITHIN THE FACADE.

STREET VENDOR FARMERS CO-OPERATIVE MARKET BOAT DOCK + PARK DIGITAL LEARNING WASTE MANAGEMENT

THIS PROJECT SITE IS THE RURAL VILLAGE OF PETITE-RIVIERE-DE-NIPPES IN HAITI. THE STUDIO WORKED TOGETHER TO DEVELOP A MASTER PLAN FOR THE TOWN, AND THEN BROKE OFF TO DESIGN INDIVIDUAL PROJECTS WITHIN THE PLAN. THIS DIGITAL LEARNING CENTER IS LOCATED ALONG THE MAIN ROADWAY PASSING THROUGH THE VILLAGE. BY DESIGNING MULTIPLE SMALL BUILDINGS THE PROJECT CAN BE COMPLETED IN PHASES AS RESOURCES BECOME AVAILABLE TO OUR PARTNER, MERCY OUTREACH MINISTRY. BUILDINGS WERE PLANNED IN A WAY TO PROVIDE OUTDOOR GATHERING SPACE AND AREAS FOR AGRICULTURAL PRODUCTION AND EDUCATION. THE SLOPED ROOFS COLLECT RAINWATER TO BE USED IN BIODIGESTERS AND TO WATER THE VARIOUS GARDENS. ADDITIONAL RUNOFF CAN BE DIRECTED SOUTH OF THE SITE TO BE USED FOR FARMING IRRIGATION. THE LARGE ROOF AREAS ALSO PROVIDE ADEQUATE SPACE FOR USE OF PHOTOVOLTAIC PANELS ALLOWING THE DIGITAL LEARNING CENTER TO PRODUCE ALL NECESSARY ENERGY AND PROVIDE EXTRA TO SURROUNDING BUILDINGS. THE MATERIALS USED FOR THE STRUCTURES AND WALL SYSTEMS ARE LAMBOO AND COMPRESSED AGRICULTURAL FIBER BOARD. IN THIS WAY, THE CAMPUS ACTS AS A DEMONSTRATION OF NEW MATERIALS THAT CAN BE PRODUCED USING AGRICULTURAL BY-PRODUCT OR BAMBOO. THE USE OF PV CELLS, CISTERNS, AND BIODIGESTERS ARE ALSO INCORPORATED TO EDUCATE THE LOCAL COMMUNITY ABOUT SUSTAINABILITY.

gREEN lINE dISTRICT CHICAGO, IL SPRING 2014 - WITH COREY BUSS


THE GREEN LINE DISTRICT IS AN URBAN DEVELOPMENT PROJECT ALONG CERMAK AVENUE IN CHICAGO. THE SITE IS LOCATED BETWEEN CHINATOWN AND MCCORMICK PLACE. THE ELEVATED GREEN LINE TRACKS RUN THROUGH THE SITE, BUT THERE IS NO EXISTING STATION. PROGRAM OF THE PROJECT INCLUDES RETAIL, COMMERCIAL OFFICE, RESIDENTIAL, A STATION FOR THE GREEN LINE, AND PUBLIC GATHERING SPACE. THE TYPE OF RESIDENTIAL VARIES FROM SINGLE FAMILY TOWNHOMES TO ONE BEDROOM APARTMENTS, ALLOWING FOR A MORE DIVERSE POPULATION. THE LOCATION BETWEEN THE LOOP AND IIT CAMPUS PROVIDES A GREAT OPPORTUNITY TO CREATE RESIDENTIAL, RETAIL, AND OFFICE SPACE THAT IS CONNECTED TO THE CITY CENTER AND CAMPUS NEIGHBORHOOD. THE NEW STOP ALONG THE GREEN LINE WILL INCREASE THE AMOUNT OF PEOPLE WHO VISIT CHINATOWN AND ALLOW TRAVELERS FROM MCCORMICK PLACE TO EASILY VISIT THE DOWNTOWN AREA.

THESE LAMP STUDIES WERE DONE USING BALLOONS AND ROCKITE CEMENT. THE IDEA WAS TO CREATE HOLLOW SHELLS AND INSERT LED BULBS INSIDE. THROUGH EXPERIMENTATION I WAS ABLE TO CREATE SPHERES THIN ENOUGH FOR THE LIGHT TO PASS THROUGH THE CEMENT. THICKER SHELLS CREATE A UNIQUE DIALOGUE BETWEEN THE CEMENT AND COLORED LIGHT EMITTED THROUGH CRACKS.

Furniture and Lamp Explorations CHAMPAIGN, IL FALL 2014




THIS TABLE EXPLORES THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN WOOD AND CONCRETE. THE FRAME IS CONSTRUCTED OF CNC ROUTED PLYWOOD RIBS AND PLAYS WITH THE IDEA OF A LIGHT FRAME SUPPORTING A HEAVY CONCRETE SLAB. THE MATERIALS WERE LEFT UNFINISHED TO CREATE A RAW AESTHETIC.

THE FLOOR LAMP WAS ORIGINALLY DESIGNED AS A BASE FOR A CONCRETE SCULPTURE, BUT CAN STAND AS AN INTERESTING PIECE ITSELF. THERE IS A WONDERFUL CONTRAST BETWEEN THE BEAMS OF LIGHT AND OUTSIDE FACES OF THE TRIANGULAR WOODEN MEMBERS.


Museum of Ancient Life CHAMPAIGN, IL FALL 2012


THE CHALLENGE FOR DESIGNING THE MUSEUM OF ANCIENT LIFE WAS TO CREATE A BUILDING THAT WOULD PLAY A CRUCIAL ROLE IN THE FUTURE EXPANSION OF THE DOWNTOWN AREA. THE CORNER SITE OF THE BUILDING HAS OVER 7000 CARS PASSING DAILY, SO THE BUILDING IS HIGH PROFILE. AS A RESULT, THE MAIN EXHIBITION SPACE, HOUSING A T-REX SKELETON, IS PLACED IN THE NORTHEAST CORNER TO HELP ATTRACT THESE DRIVERS TO THE MUSEUM. THE LOUVERS ARE INTENDED TO HELP SCREEN THE DINOSAUR SO IT IS NOT ENTIRELY EXPOSED AND TO GIVE THE BUILDING A STRONG SENSE OF HORIZONTALITY. THE VIBRANT RED OF THE LOUVERS IS IN RESPONSE TO THE RED BRICK USED BY MANY OF THE SURROUNDING BUILDINGS. THE SITE HAS A LONG ANGLED EDGE, AND THAT ANGLE IS REFLECTED ON THE INTERIOR OF THE BUILDING TO HELP DIRECT VISITORS INTO THE LARGE OPEN EXHIBITION SPACE. THE EXHIBITION HAS A DOUBLE HEIGHT SPACE ALLOWING VIEWS OF THE T-REX FROM THE SECOND FLOOR. A GREEN ROOF PROVIDES OUTDOOR SPACE FOR PUBLIC EVENTS AND LECTURES, AS WELL AS SECLUDED AREAS IN THE GARDEN FOR INDEPENDENT ACTIVITIES. THE BUILDING HAS A STEEL FRAME STRUCTURE AND USES A VARIABLE AIR VOLUME HVAC SYSTEM.

Research Residence KICKAPOO STATE PARK, IL FALL 2011


THE CHALLENGE OF THIS PROJECT WAS TO CREATE A RESEARCH FACILITY FOR SCIENTISTS STUDYING AN ANIMAL OF OUR CHOICE. A MODULE WAS TO BE CREATED FOR THE ANIMAL TO INHABIT WHILE ALLOWING THE RESEARCHERS TO OBSERVE THEM. TO ACCOMPLISH THIS I CREATED A WALL MODULE THAT PROVIDED SQUIRRELS A PLACE TO NEST AND THE RESEARCHERS VIEWPORTS TO THEM. THIS WALL MODULE IS PLACED ALONG THE BUILDING AT STRATEGIC LOCATIONS TO PROVIDE THE SCIENTISTS PLENTY OF OBSERVATION OPPORTUNITY. THE MODULE ALSO TRANSFORMS ON THE INTERIOR BECOMING SHELVING AND STORAGE FOR THE INHABITANTS.

THE THICKER MASSES EXTRUDING FROM THE WALL ARE HOLLOWED OUT NEAR THE TOP PROVIDING NESTING PLACES FOR SQUIRRELS. BEHIND THESE MASSES, WINDOWS ARE PLACED TO PROVIDE RESEARCHERS VIEWS OF THE SQUIRRELS.

SCREEN SCRAPER IS A MID-RISE, MIXED USE COMMERCIAL AND RESIDENTIAL BUILDING. OUR STUDIO FOCUSED LARGELY ON HOW WE CAN MANIPULATE THE BUILDING ENVELOPE. MY DESIGN RESULTED IN HAVING A SCREEN SYSTEM MADE OF TINTED GLASS AND INSULATED STEEL PANELS WRAPPING EACH OTHER AND STEPPING IN AND OUT FROM THE BUILDING. THIS SCREEN PENETRATES THE ENVELOPE AND CONTINUES ON THE INTERIOR PROVIDING RESIDENTS UNIQUE STORAGE AND SEATING OPPORTUNITIES. ALONG THE FIRST FLOOR COMMERCIAL LEVEL THE SPACES CREATED BY THE SCREEN ALLOW FOR SHOPPING DISPLAYS INSIDE, AND PUBLIC SEATING ON THE EXTERIOR. IN ADDITION TO CREATING A UNIQUE FACADE AND USEFUL SPACE, THE SCREEN CAN ALSO RESPOND TO THE ORIENTATION TO ALLOW IN MORE OR LESS NATURAL LIGHT. BY CHANGING THE SIZE AND AMOUNT OF EITHER THE TINTED GLASS OR INSULATED STEEL PANELS, WE HAVE CONTROL ON THE PRIVACY AND LIGHTING LEVELS OF EACH SPACE. AS THE SCREEN CONTINUES TO WRAP AND MOVE TO AND FROM THE BUILDING, EACH RESIDENTIAL UNIT RECEIVES UNIQUE SPACES, STORAGE AND LIGHTING - NO TWO UNITS ARE THE SAME.

THE ALLERTON AMERICAN TRAVEL SCHOLARSHIP PROVIDED ME WITH THE OPPORTUNITY TO PLAN A TRIP AND COME UP WITH A THESIS TO STUDY WHILE I TRAVELED. I DECIDED TO TRAVELTO THE WEST COASTAND VISIT DENVER, LAS VEGAS, LOSANGELES, SAN FRANCISCO,AND SEATTLE. PRIOR TO LEAVING, I SPENTAFEW DAYS STUDYING CHICAGO. DURING MYTRAVELS I EXPLOREDAND STUDIEDTHE DOWNTOWNAREAS OF EACH CITY.THE GOALOF MYTRIP WAS TO SEE HOW EASILY I COULD CREATEA“MENTALMAP” OF EACH CITY. I BASED THIS OFF OF THE KEVIN LYNCH BOOK “THE IMAGE OF THE CITY.” USING THE FIVE ELEMENTS FROM LYNCH’S WRITING: PATH, EDGE, NODE, DISTRICT, AND LANDMARK, I CATEGORIZED CERTAIN BUILDINGS, SCULPTURES, AND PARKS THAT I USED AS REFERENCE POINTS WHILE I WALKED EACH CITY. AFTER RETURNING FROM MY TRIP, I CREATED A GALLERY WHICH DISPLAYED SKETCHES, PHOTOS, AND MY MENTAL “MAP MODELS” SHOWING THE RESULTS OF MY STUDIES.
