The importance of soccer in West Hudson can never be underestimated and as such, the sport will be forever honored with a new statue in Harrison. A most solemn remembrance

Seven years ago, in an effort to create an environment that promotes wellness for the youth, parents and residents of Lyndhurst, as well as to offer the tools needed to be free of the misuse and abuse of alcohol, tobacco and illicit drugs, the Township of Lyndhurst created the Lyndhurst Municipal Alliance, a grassroots partnership with the town’s

The teen had revealed to the counselor her mother beat her with the metal buckle side of a leather belt during an argument two days earlier. The teen showed police several large, deep bruises on her upper arm and the

Small description what happened and caused the death of our daughter on June 30, 2021.

Then, on a June evening in 2021, we got a surprise visit of Kearny police to our home to announce her unexpected death, at one of the hotels in Jersey City. She was alone in the room and we learned that that guy was with her a few minutes ahead and she told him that she wasn’t feeling good and vomiting, and it was declared by himself on a police report. Unfortunately, our surprise why that guy never called for medical assistance to save her; instead, he left the hotel for over three hours and came back to the site. He said that he went out to buy some drinks for her, do you believe that? We believe that she was killed before he left, to cover up her death.

disappearance would cause us a huge social dysfunction and a health disturbance at the same time. We insist and persist to find out the cause of our daughter’s death to the end.

On Sept. 6 at 9 minutes past midnight, Officers Lawrence Latka, Ruben Rivera and Cort Montanino were dispatched to an apartment building for a domestic assault. When they arrived, officer found the alleged aggressor had fled in a car. The victim, a 37-year-old woman, reported her 35-year-old ex-boyfriend had shown up at her apartment and pounded on the door until she opened it.

We have remained silent in the wake of our daughter’s untimely death over a year ago, Despite our cry for justice, we have received no explanation as to how the man who left her to die has not been required to provide an explanation or face charges. Despite his admission that she was not feeling well and his understanding of her drug issues, he left her for hours to die in a motel room rather than seeking medicalSurely, help.this cannot be conduct that goes unpunished as it is unfair and unjust that this person continues walking the streets when our daughter is gone and he could have saved her life by just calling for medical help.

On Sept. 4 at 8 p.m., Det. Jordenson Jean was tipped off that a customer inside ShopRite Liquors was an un-apprehended suspect in an Aug. 2 shoplifting. Det. Jean identified the suspect as Valentino E. Rogers, 35, of Newark, and arrested him outside the store. A search incident to arrest uncovered five stolen liquor bottles in the suspect’s backpack totaling $184.95, two credit cards embossed to two different women, a driver’s license belonging to a third woman, a dozen empty glass vials commonly used to package cocaine, and three empty wax folds stamped “Route 66” and “Exit 2” which are commonly used to package heroin.

Rogers was charged with credit card theft, shoplifting and possession of drug paraphernalia. He was also wanted on warrants from East Orange (charging shoplifting, possession of drug paraphernalia and trespass) and Union (charging shoplifting). Officers held Rogers at the county jail.

Further, to Hudson County Prosecutor, we were silenced until August 2022, it’s over one year since my daughter’s death. Why we can’t have a clear explanation how and why is the person who was with her in the hotel room not taking stand at court and giving us at least a small idea how happened to her, since he declared in the report that she told him she wasn’t feeling good.

On Sept. 1 at 3:24 p.m., Officers Mat Lopez, Jordan Miranda and Sean Wilson responded to a shoplifting complaint at ShopRite. A manager accused Luz M. Lugardo, 30, of Newark, of concealing $98.34 of Gorilla Glue and $6.19 of nail polish in a duffel bag and trying to leave the store without paying.

She was following rehab after rehab and counseling and unfortunately, nothing helped to restore her state, which was destroyed already with these unknown drugs. She lost weight, faith, and refused to listen to her own parents, not coming home on time, then slowly not com ing in for two days or more. She got confused and morally lost.

In September 2019, this horrible and terrible situation started when she stopped going to the college and cashed out her tuition money to pay for her bad habit. He was pushing her to steal from stores, having sex to pay for drugs until her energy was drained and feeling always ill and some cases, he was beating her. Sometimes she came back home with bruises on arms, feet even on her neck. We were told by the manager of the hotel where she was found dead the truth — they were always arguing at the hotel, and that guy was treating her badly and that’s why she was never telling us her problems she was scared that someone would do harm to her parents, and may have killed us, burn the house down, etc.

On Sept. 1 at 6:29 p.m., Officers Angel Martinez and Ruben Rivera and Sgt. Ben Wuelfing were dispatched to a private home where a tenant called police reporting his roommate was tearing up the joint. Upon arrival, the tenant told police his 32-year-old roommate had punched a hole in the wall and shattered a television by tossing it to the floor.

We have continued waiting for over a year for the law enforcement community to provide clear information on our daughter’s death and the role of the man who left her to die. Please continue to review the circumstances regarding our daughter’s death and we appreciate your cooperation and effort to ensure that justice is served.

We are essentially surrounded by a great ocean moat (the Atlantic and Pacific oceans) which protect us from foreign invasion. In addition, the nations that border us are friendly. The problem with this assessment is that it describes the geography of the other two nations that share our continent, Canada and Mexico. In addition, these nations are extremely rich in natural resources as well, yet, neither has risen to the military and economic heights of the United States.

I’ll close with an illustration. A great milestone for an American teenager is getting their driver’s license. With getting that license, however, parents gain a great deal of leverage over them. When the teen doesn’t behave up to mom and dad’s standards, they take away the car keys. They gave the car and can take away the keys. This is OK for mom and dad. Indeed, it is expected of a good mom and dad if they want to raise responsible children.

It remained that way until we loosened up a bit when Liza Minnelli sang “New York, New York.” But that even lasted but for a few moments. That was, however, until the bottom of the 8th inning, the Mets trailing, 2-1. With one runner on, Mike Piazza came to the plate. He hit a massive homer to center and the place erupted and shook. It shook more than I remember from Game 6 on the 1986 World Series, another game I was blessed to go to. We hugged. We jumped. We screamed. We cried. Because for the first time in 10 days and 12 hours, we had a reason to. Even though the next morning, it would be back to reality that thousands were dead and the smoke still rose from Ground Zero, Piazza made it go away for a few hours. Yet at that moment, somehow, we knew despite it all, we were going to be OK — eventually. And most eventually were.

The night began with bagpipes — and I don’t know about you, but when emotions are high, and bagpipes are played, my sentimental Irish side come right out. I cried. I didn’t care what anyone thought. The forthcoming ceremonies were incredible. Marc Anthony sang the National Anthem. The game started. We didn’t know what to do, though. Do we cheer? Do we boo Chipper Jones after he just hugged every single Met player before the game?

wrote about this a few years ago, but it’s worth telling the story again, especially for those who may not have read it the first time. Sept. 21, 2001, was my 27th birthday. I really had no desire to celebrate it, just 10 days out from the worst day of my life and the life of so many Americans. But as fate would have it, I did celebrate that Friday night. And it’s memory as vivid today as it was 21 years ago.My friend and colleague, Francis Kochanski, and I would go to Shea Stadium every September with a group of seniors at St. Anthony High School. They came from one of his classes, did the students, and I tagged along to make sure there was enough supervision. (From what I remember, it was for every six students, one chaperone was needed — and 10 kids were supposed to go.)

Getting back to the original question, is our nation heading toward fascism? My answer is, it will if we forsake our founding principles. If we fail to teach the next generation the concept of natural rights and the fact that our liberties are God-given, they will see them as nothing more than privileges granted by the government.

However, it is not ok for government. Remember, if government gives you your rights, government will reserve the right to suspend your rights when you don’t march in lock-step with them.

It was a “You have to go.” And while there were a handful of parents who wouldn’t let their kids go the game, (no one really had the proper answer then) Kochanski and I went with a group of high school seniors. None of us knew how to act, to react, to feel.

Kochanski picked the game date in June 2001 — Sept. 21, 2001 — Atlanta Braves @ New York Mets. He never dreamed, when he picked it, that it would be the very first regular season sporting event in the City after the attacks. But it was and we had a great dilemma — do we go? Should we go? Are we out of our minds if we go?

But go, we did. And upon pulling up at the Willets Point/Shea Stadium No. 7 train station, we immediately knew how different this was going to be. Military and NYPD officers were stationed seemingly everywhere — and each one was equipped with visible weapons. For a while, it was if we had just entered a war zone. But it gave us a tremendous sense of safety.

But wow. Sports has a funny way of showing its importance in the darkest of days. And could we ever use that spirit these days, couldn’t we?

The Cold War term “superpower” (used to describe Russia, China and the United States) is no longer adequate to describe America’s greatness with regard to its military and economicHowever, might.Americans should not rest secure in this knowledge. The ash bucket of history is full of once-great empires. Nevertheless, America’s meteoric rise to greatness in a mere 246 years borders on the miraculous. Some have suggested there is nothing unique or special about America and we are just fortunate to have great geography.

What set the USA apart and caused its meteoric rise was its founding principles. Our founders understood clearly that our rights come from God we are born with them. Like so many others before and after, Dolaghan and folks like former Kearny soccer prodigy and, later, professional Hugh O’Neill, and others too numerous to mention got their start in “the beautiful game” at the Kearny Oval and, of course, the Harrison Courts, adjoining Library Park.

teams from England and Canada.

“Clark O.N.T. is really the epicenter where the game flourished,” said O’Neill. “It was from there that tons of clubs, on both sides of the river, sprung up during the golden age of soccer during the ‘20s and ’30s.”

That same year, Dolaghan — perhaps inspired by the fever-pitch intensity of the film — enlisted the aid of the Harrison Education Association and Friends of Harrison Soccer to launch a fund-raising campaign to underwrite the design and fashioning of a “public art statue representing the proud history, success and reputation that this community has achieved throughout the soccer playing communities of the UnitedDolaghanStates.”said the sculptor, Andre Iwancyzk, a native of Poland, was recommended by Jersey City monument maker John Burns Jr., who has been serving as the campaign’s project manager. Iwancyzk developed

“We showed Andre 25 or 30 pictures of West Hudson soccer players primarily from the ‘20s and ‘30s, and he came up with a generic look for a player from that era,” Dolaghan recalled.Inearly 2020, Iwancyzk started his work in Brooklyn, but moved it to a Jersey City workplace after COVID hit. But the pandemic also created supply-chain issues and materials like silica, bronze and granite — all needed to assemble the statue — became scarce and more costly to acquire, driving up the project’s cost by about $40,000 and stretching out its completion time to 14 months, according to Dolaghan.

Many youths also played for their local schools, with Kearny and Harrison high schools typically featuring the premier talent, as attested to by the record number of championship seasons logged by both schools over the decades, notably the 1950 Harrison High squad that recorded an undefeated, unscored upon season as Group II state champs.

a reputation as a fine artist in the U.S., where he received several commissions for public art projects.

The dedication ceremony, its sponsors say, will mark the “celebrating of more than 135 years of history, passion, joy and tears” in marking West Hudson as “the cradle of soccer in America — the sport that has given Harrison and the world so much.”

“We’re still raising funds to cover the overall cost,” he said.

In the U.S., local enthusiasts trace the game’s East Coast origins back at least to the 1880s and the Clark O.N.T. (Our New Thread) team, whose name sprang from the thread mill along the Passaic River in Newark but the team — whose members came from the mill workers — played on the other side of the river in East Newark.

The last three played in the World Cup during the 1990s when Kearny came to be popularly known as “Soccer Town,Kearny’sU.S.A.”enthusiasm for the sport has been vividly captured in a 2019 documentary of the same name.

Among the many volunteers working on the campaign, Dolaghan singled out Henry Villanueva as having been “invaluable with his computer expertise in helping get out the word via social media.” And he lauded Celia Mariano, secretary to the HEA and longtime Harrison Board of Education secretary, for a big assist in processing mailers promoting the campaign and handling tax-deductible donations.

Throughout West Hudson, soccer clubs like the Thistle in Kearny and others sponsored by parishes and local businesses recruited the best youth players for local and regional competition. Despite graduating nearly the entire lineup from last year’s stellar 15-10 team, North Arlington girls’ volleyball coach Joseph Cioffi was optimistic that this year’s group had the potential to compete with some of the best in the NJIC.

The two games that we lost, I think we played really well, but unfortunately the score (wasn’t in our favor),” he said. “After Thursday night (in Harrison), I told them this team isn’t going to lose too many games. I think that game will be the turning

“I never had any doubt in my mind that the girls could compete at a high level. These girls are talented and they always bring positive energy when they’re out on the court. My only concern was that when they see these teams on the schedule and then overthink things. (That) Tuesday night, they didn’t think, they just went out there and Leadingplayed.”theway has been outside hitter Grace

Tuesday, Sept. 13, North Arlington posted an eyebrow-raising 26-24, 2725 victory over Rutherford, one of gold standards for small-school volleyball, winning 20 or more games each of the last six full seasons.“Thegirls have the desire to compete at a high level no matter what their experience is,” Cioffi said. “To go out and win the way we did and fight as hard as we did shows that the girls have what it takes to compete against these top teams in the NJIC.

Lyndhurst returns six starters from last year’s 14-6 team including, perhaps, the area’s most versatile player in Lucas Baroni. The senior is one of the better goalkeepers in Bergen County, but is also a fine offensive talent as well. The result? Baroni will see time both in net and up top at forward.

“The biggest thing as a coach is that I need to continue to have them playing at a high level and we don’t fall back,” Cioffi said. “This victory shows that no matter what your varsity experience is, if you play together as a team, you hustle and you communicate and you’re aggressive, you’ll find a way to secure a victory against any kind of opponent.”

Sophomore Cyprian Niedbal has enjoyed a fast start to the year, scoring two goals. Carrion will also see extensive time in the midfield as well as first-year senior Robbie Valladolid.

That said, Abu-Hakemah believes he has another top-level forward in junior Tyler Wise, who missed all but one game last year due to injury.

The schedule doesn’t really get easier for Lyndhurst with division contests against Secaucus on Monday followed by a Wednesday trip to North Arlington. But even with a strong division, which also includes Harrison, Rutherford and Weehawken, Abu-Hakemah can look back 12 months, when it encountered a similar slow start before hitting its stride.

Brow ptosis is the medical term for drooping eyebrows. It usually occurs in older individu als but may also occur in people with facial nerve weakness. In some cases, the sagging eyebrows may be aesthetically displeasing, but sometimes they can begin to cover the eyes and affect eyesight through loss of part of the field of vision. Although the condition is not painful, drooping eyebrows can cause depression and fatigue or simply make a person look tired all the time. The condition can be surgically corrected by inserting stitches underneath the brow to pull up the skin; extra skin may also be removed.
